I remenber talk about a "Rig for red mod" some time ago...Did any person ever come up with a way to do this? or is it still a hard code issue? Some times I would like to rig for red in the day time...it adds to the times I get depth charges...... :|\
Pfft, you have watched too many films - when under water for a long period of time white was used even at night!
you dont need red light if your not looking outside

In 'Das Boot' we see blue lights used as often as red. Anyone know why ?

I don't know but I can make a qualified guess:
Red light is only good for two things, adapting your eye to darkness and reduce your beaming of light so you can stay undectected.
Red light is not good for maps or gaughes with red colours on. Everything that have a red colour will be "invisible". A much better light to "work" in is a blue-green light. Then you keep your adapted darkvision and still is able to work (you can see everything).
This is true and I have self experience in it!
So one way to use this can be that redlight was used during darkness and before entering the watchtower. Blue light used other times during night conditions.
I dont know if this was the reason though, but maybe!

I heard on the military channel that newer subs run red in the control room at night to help the men keep adjusted to day/night cycles as they are under water for weeks on end. In WWII I believe it was only used to adjust your eyes to the dark so you could pop out on the bridge and see right away.
*Educated guess, not necessarily accurate*

I know, and understand that it is for adjusting your eyes.....I want it for the immersion effect.....red or blue...so, does any one know how??
It's also to give you more stealth from the other guy....

True - it's easier for your eyes to adjust from red light to dark than from white light to dark. In former USSR subs red light was constantly on at night and this was also an indicator for the crew that it was night.
Blue light is the most efficient colour for illumination in reduced light conditions. If you want to see with a dim light, make it blue, and you will see more. The eyes are most sensitive to blue and green light. Dim blue lights have been used on submarine for this reason. It's my guess that dim blue lights were used on U-boats when they wanted to save power, for example when running on batteries underwater.
I'm not sure if the blue lights were used on German U-boats, but if they were I'd guess it has more to do with day and night cycles than anything else.
In fact my guess would be that dim blue lights would be used when submerged in the daytime to save battery power.
You'd want as much light as possible in the U-boat before you go out on a daytime, watch so you aren't dazzled, so I guess that's where white lights would come in.
Be nice to have all this confirmed, but for now I'd be happy with rig for red and rig for white and rig for blue mods.

If they could point me in the right place I would love to make it....... and jason210, I like the idea of having the option of all 3 even better..good point... :yep:

Hello, Kilo. Hey I sew you in one of the other threds. I think you were talking to Avon lady and others about modding...What is your take on how to do this? My first thought was that it "rig" would be linked to the Sim's "Time clock" you know day....night . So I have looked with a Hex shop4.0.....But I can't find the "Time trig" what do you think?
and yes blue is cool, but having all 3 will fit for every one..... :|\

Take a look in the \data\Menu\GUI\ folder for the following files:
Redmask.tga
Redmask2.tga
Redmask3.tga
You'll need to be able to see the alpha channel, then try to edit the color. Don't know if it will work though. Good luck!

Theres also another portion in there starting at [G2B I3] and ending at [G2B I19] referencing redmask.tga and includes another redlight group at [G2B I11].
Maybe this has something to do with it, maybe not. Modding is not my specialty but thought the more eyes looking for a solution will eventually shed light to the 'better qualified among us' to find a solution we can all share.
Congrats to all the modders who've transformed this game into something it should have been from the start.
Back to the hunt!

I have a feeling it's hard-coded. The red light in the 3D stations is not just a mask or texture, but some form of real-time vertex lighting.

That's right, Redmask2.tga and Redmask3.tga are not original files, are from the Precision Periscope Mod V1.0 and are used to put a rig for red or night mask into the UZO.
There are two choices, a set of smoke glass colour and a set in red colour.

Hi redstorm101,
I was just looking at the dat files with hex editor in the Interior folder for each of the subs and found references to red or the value for red color, but there are so many and I'm no hex modder so I don't know what each specifically references in the sub interior.
I don't know if these files contain the 'missing link' you're looking for to mod to change the light color but maybe someone like Manuel Ortega who worked on the workaround for the 8km visibility issue could look into it and make short work of it as well.
Just more to think about and investigate.
I don`t know how accurate Das Boot is, but they used normal lights, red lights and blueish lights. And when it was night and they surfaced, the ones going to the tower had somekind of goggles on. Like sunglasses, to help eyes to get used to the dark.
Hey redstorm101
I agree, this would add a sub load of atmosphere to an already great sim.
I had tried this about 2 months ago. It wasn't rig for red but everything red at night. I found it extremely hard on the eyes to be bathed in red and look at the crew management screen or war room and have that white light blind you. I really wish you could work this out. I couldn't make any progress on this but to darken the background screen in the crew management to a redish purple (<---that sounds repetative). But that made it that color at all times.

This is what I posted to Gairith, He just came out with a great "blue nav map mod".He is close to what we have been talking about...
All we need now, is the option to rig at "The captains" own discretion...and thru out the whole boat....After all, even for realism sake, I'm sure captains would rig for blue or red just to conserve battery power running under water during day light, or to let some of the off duty men including him self, get some shut eye..Night time is when the hunt really happened.
To Gairith :
Gairith! I am so pleased to see this mod! I have a post awhile back asking how to do this for the whole boat .If I recall the post is" rig for red mod". In this post we where playing with the thought of having the option to rig for red, blue, and white. Also there was talk of how to have the option of rigging at the captain's command, not by the sim's time clock..And this possible mod was thought of to give comfort to the "captains" eyes. I often boot up and return to my missions in the evening, after I let winston my 15 year old dog "best friend" out and my wife is well off to sleep. I start and resume my mission.
This is the scenario:
It's 10pm at night,my time..real time..In my mission it's 2pm daylight...mission time...I have the realism setting and mods set so I have no external views outside my uboat..It would be great for me and other captains to have the option to "rig" at their own discretion...simply put, It's easer on the eye's.
And yes, before there is a joke from the "other guys"...turning down the contrast on the monitor is not a effective option.
Gairth! your getting me and other captains closer to this option in a round about way! I love your Idea of the"blue map mod"! With a great deal of respect, can you take this mod to the next level? With that said, I greatly do appreciate the work you have done.
Bravo!!.....

:-? this is not the answer i know ,but i think it would be nice too simulate the captain of das boot saying "kill all unneccesary lights"as the lights do go off when being depth charged, and also in time compession :know: so perhaps this could be modded into the game  its just an immersion thingy you know no big deal

capt-jones...That's a good idea!! It would consist of making a simple sound file "Kill all unnecessary lights"...And I do believe that is a sound bit in the Das Boot movie! The only thing that is needed that I can see ,is to find the "command" or"trigger" to turn the lights on and off. We have seen that the Rig for white, red, and now Blue colors can be changed .Gairith's
Blue nav map mod proves this.capt-jones, with your Idea of "kill all unnecessary lights"....lets say that means "Blue" color, I see how I could use my Hex editor,
To play with the variables, and add a small "boost" to battery life!! after all, that was an advantage and tactic used. capt-jones....Dawm good input!
I have to find the "trigger switch" or command to turn the lights on and off....After that, it's biscuits and gravy! we can Rig for white..(standard running)...Red..(Night time or under attack)....Blue...(Kill all unnecessary Lights\conserve power for batteries) and best of all, the captains have the freedom of choice, and It's easier on the eyes!
It will not just look cool, but it will be "functional".
Well, Its time to pull up my sleeve's and go a Digg'in!
wish me luck boys!!

Any progress in the matter yet?
I'm really very interested in this light-colour-thing.
Much easier way to have a selectable rig-for-red:
Buy a pig lamp. Yep. Emits a deep red light same as the ones in the u-boats. Connect it up to some sort of holder/bracket.
Close the curtains. Turn off other lights. Turn on piglamp.
Works for me.

No need to apologise :D
Unlike recently upcoming habits in forums, when I ask a question it is really a question (a means to gather information) and not a hidden demand.

Hey, thanks VoodooPriest. Its looks as though I may have found the command string for day and night time rigging! I have to play with the Hex editor! I have to see how I can "unlock" it or "unsink" it from the Sim's playing time code! I seems It is not as "hard coded" as many ,including my self, have thought! this is a good break!
I will post more soon...
