New version of SH3 Commander now available!

Get it at the Beerymod site (www.beerymod.com) or directly from www.beerymod.com/SH3Cmdr1.43.7z.

Jaesen Jones' new 'SH3 Commander' is once more greatly enhanced, and gives lots more flexibility and depth to the game. Here is a screenshot of the main SH3 Commander interface:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v207/Beery/Career.jpg

SH3 Commander will generate an in-depth history for your commander, including birthdate, promotions, the date he joined the navy, and the date he transferred to the Ubootwaffe. After your career is over (if your commander survives), it will even generate a biography of your commander's later activities - what he did for the rest of the war, and what happened to him after the war. SH3 Commander creates an entire background story. Your commander becomes a real person with a story that goes beyond the limits of Silent Hunter III.

CREW MANAGER

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v207/Beery/CM.jpg

With a simple click on the Crew Manager button, players can:
-promote and demote within type (ie Officers, Petty Officers and Sailors);
-change crewmen names;
-give and remove medals based on historic criteria;
-give and remove badges based on historic criteria;
-give, adjust and remove qualifications;
-create a crew list for viewing (txt file) and printing.

The Crew Manager also warns if certain conditions are met, such as a crewman receiving medals before they are historically available, or if a crewman might be entitled to specific medals etc and allows a "one click" auto fix.

To use the Crew Manager, just select a crewman and click-and-drag medals, promote or demote the crewman by choosing from the ranks in the drop-down list, or click on the RN button to randomize his name. Clicking 'Apply' saves the changes. You can also build a crew list, saving the details of your crew and their accomplishments to a text file.

New features include:

- Added ability to generate Commander name for new careers
- Now sets career (new and existing) in SH3 prior to loading, thus providing more integration with SH3
- "Realistic Length" preference now saved between uses
- Now correctly inserts tonnage information in Career Summary regardless of user's country
- Added ability to print Career Summaries and Crew Lists for dead and retired commanders
- Removed IC2 and Front Clasp from the Auto Fix routine (suggestions are still provided)
- Added realistic U-boat number selection by type and flotilla
- Translations of various features into German for those who play the game in German. Translations by Nico71.

For details of more features, see the help file that comes with the download.

MODS INCLUDED WITH SH3 COMMANDER

- Monthly news reports that appear when loading a patrol, and during the patrol. Text by Beery, translation by Nico71.
- A map of Europe and the Mediterranean which updates based on the progress of the war. Map by Beery.
- Historical radio broadcasts that appear at their correct dates.
- Crush depth mod that gives players an increased crush depth for the Type VIIC/41.

New in version 1.42:
- 1939 flotilla names are included (1st Flotilla is named 'Weddigen', 2nd is 'Saltzwedel' and 7th is 'Wegener').

New in version 1.43:
- Added Random Tonnage Mod by Observer.
- Fuel resupply strategy simulated from April 1942 until December 1943 by extending range of Type VIIC during this time period.
- Bismarck features 3 paint schemes - the sea trials scheme which Bismarck used until March 1941 (scheme by Macstu23), the Operation Rheinubung scheme which was used from March until May 1941 (scheme by Beery), and the final scheme which was used when it sailed into the Atlantic (scheme by Type941).
- Merchant Variety Pack by Iambecomelife.

Looking at the new archive, I see that there's no DAT file. So that means that when uninstalling the old version and installing the new, the old DAT file stays in place.

However, the new version comes with a new INI file named SH3CMDR.ini.new. Does the new version detect this file the first time it is run, delete the old version and then rename this file to SH3CMDR.ini? Or do we manually have to do this our selves?

Simply unpack over the top of your current installation. The installation will not overwrite your SH3Cmdr.ini file, which is where all your career data and name information is stored. SH3 Commander sorts all this out automatically when it is first ran to ensure that you suffer no data loss. Also note that SH3Cmdr.dat is no longer needed - it has been replaced with SH3Cmdr_en.txt and SH3Cmdr_de.txt, the new language files.

Running with JSGME? SH3 Commander is not a mod per se, but a full add-on. There's no need to use in conjunction with JSGME. SH3 Commander has its own copy engine that manages the files it copies into SH3. Using with JSGME is really just wasting hard disk space and effectively putting a "wrapper around a wrapper". But, if that's how you want to run it, the same deal applies, but just disable your current installation of SH3 Commander first. Personally, I just install SH3 Commander to my C:\ drive and create an icon on my desktop. I run it whenever I want to run SH3. I know Beery, however, likes to install straight into his SH3 folder, which is equally as fine.

All of this should have been in a ReadMe. At least please add it to the thread's 1st post for all to see right away.

So can we simply drag and drop the archived SH3 Commander folder into our SH3 install folder or anywhere else on our hard drive and SH3 Commander will pick up the SH3 execution path from the Windows registry?

Well, the readme/help file does state "To install, simply unzip SH3 Commander to a folder of your choice, including the Silent Hunter III install folder if you desire.", which, in simplistic terms, is all that is required (in fact, it was consciously decided not to be too descriptive in order to avoid confusion). However, I take your point and will speak to Beery about making it more specific and informative.

So can we simply drag and drop the archived SH3 Commander folder into our SH3 install folder or anywhere else on our hard drive and SH3 Commander will pick up the SH3 execution path from the Windows registry?
Yup. For example, I have two installs. One under C:\Games\SH3 Commander (my Silent Hunter III installation is C:\Games\SilentHunterIII) and one buried deep in my application development folders. Both access the default installation of SH3 (I believe there may be a problem with multiple installs of SH3, but no-one has been able to yet provide me with the specific details). To make it even easier for myself, I have created a shortcut on my desktop. I just insert the SH3 DVD, doubleclick the shortcut and I'm away!

Apologies for any confusion.

Where does SH3 Commander retain my current player career(s) information? In a file? Where? Or in the registry. Makes a difference how I'll update now that I see that using JSGME is not necessary.

The SH3Cmdr.ini file in the SH3 Commander folder stores all your career details and SH3 Commander settings (you'll see one of your recent requests has now been included! ;)). Essentially most, if not all, users will only want one installation of SH3 Commander (I have two because one is for testing and one is for playing :)).

The SH3Cmdr.ini file is the main file which users can manually adjust. For example, you may like to add more first, last or birth place names.

For info, SH3 Commander makes no changes to the registry, meaning no left over residual should you ever decide to remove it.

Any special update instructions, if installing with JSGME? Can we simply uninstall the old version and install the new? Or will data be lost?

Data will be lost if you uninstall the old version first, because SH3 Commander keeps campaign info in the SH3Cmdr.ini file. You don't need to use JSGME to install SH3 Commander (you can, but you don't need to) because it can reside outside SH3, and it is really a mod enabler in itself. You should be able to install it straight over the old version of SH3 Commander. When you install it over the old version it will look for your old SH3Cmdr.ini file and if it finds it it will leave that alone in order to preserve the campaign data that exists. If it doesn't find it, it will write a new SH3Cmdr.ini file.

Oops, hehe, just saw that Jaesen already answered the question.

Is it compatible with improved convoys?

Yes it is. Basically it should work with virtually anything as long as it's based on the standard SH3 1.4b install. It works with an unmodded SH3 1.4b, and it also should work with any mods, including Improved Convoys, and/or any RUb 1.4* version, the UnReal U-boat mod and the upcoming RUb 1.43.

Wow! I haven't used SH3 Commander since SH3 v1.3, and I didn't know that there was a version compatible with 1.4b out already previous to this. Or did I misunderstand?

Anyway - so we can assign medals, promotions and qualifications directly from SH3 Commander now? Even if we have not received any from in game to hand out?

And from the screenshot it appears that we can actually assign more than one qualification to petty officers now?

Finally, regarding the new radio messages mentioned. Is this compatible with Irishred's Radiolog mod?

This looks truly awesome. Must hurry back to base. Thanks a lot for this!

There was a version 1.42 out. There's a lot more functionality in the latest version than we had in the 1.3 versions. I think you'll like this one.

Anyway - so we can assign medals, promotions and qualifications directly from SH3 Commander now? Even if we have not received any from in game to hand out?

Yes, although you get more advantages (in terms of crew efficiency) if you award medals and promotions via the game. The medals and promotions permitted by SH3 Commander allow you to reward crewmen for bravery in cases where the game won't let you.

And from the screenshot it appears that we can actually assign more than one qualification to petty officers now?

Yes. So far though, it's cosmetic only. We're working on making the extra qualifications work in the game, but we aren't quite there yet.

Finally, regarding the new radio messages mentioned. Is this compatible with Irishred's Radiolog mod?

Yes. Irishred's radiolog mod is text-based. These radio messages are audio, and play via the gramophone.

You're welcome. I hope you enjoy it.

Just been trying out the SH3 Comm.

New career with a name entered via SH3 Comm; first patrol.

Leaving Wilhelmshaven I followed the escort part of the way and then passed it. Just as well that I did as it sunk! :o
Must have hit a mine, but not sure as I was using time compression and not on the bridge.

Sailed across the North Sea without incident or contact, but that is not unusual. On rounding the Orkneys was picked up by a Hurricane; dived, surfaced, etc. Repeated this for a few hours then came under attacks from flights of Hurricanes. Think I will add the reduced aircraft mod.

But regardless, the game plays well and Beery & Co have done another great job.

Weird thing though, was that when I came out of the game and then started SH3Comm up again (via short cut) my career was not listed.

Anyone have any idea what I did wrong?

Cheers.

I don't think you did anything wrong. The game doesn't make a full record of your career until you finish your first patrol. I'm guessing you saved the career in mid-patrol. As soon as you finish the patrol the career will show up in SH3 Commander.

As for the escort sinking, it probably ran into difficulty because its avoidance programming kicked in as you passed it, sending it off its course.

The escort AI is indeed a problem! Normally there are no mines anywhere near its path. But I saw it happen as well when I came close to an escort. It doesn't matter if you are close behind it, but at the side or the front it will try to evade. This can result in the escort running aground, or going BOOM. That's just poor SH3 AI programming. Either stay behind the escort, or overtake it right at the beginning of the trip out of port. On return it's easier, because if you don't wait for the escort at the meeting point you are on your own anyway! Either way, you have to know EXACTLY where the mines are!

You're not doing anything wrong, but what you're running into is a fairly common misconception that players new to SH3 Commander have about it. SH3 Commander's 'user entered details' feature is used both to set up a new career and to set up single missions, but what SH3 Commander does relates only to the patrol - it doesn't set up the menu part of the game for you because the game won't allow that at the moment. So SH3 Commander is limited by what the game will allow as far as setting up the career in the menu screen is concerned:

When you start a new career using SH3 Commander, all it does is copy data files to the game based on the choices you make. You still have to choose the flotilla from in the game so that it matches what you chose in SH3 Commander, and you'll still get assigned the standard U-boat for the flotilla and you'll be limited to the dates that the game allows. So if you set up for a career in 7th Flotilla with a Type XXI in December 1944, the game's career system won't allow that. It will allow you to choose 7th Flotilla, but you'll only get a choice of 5 default dates, one for each year between 1939 and 1943. When you've selected the year (in the game) you will be assigned the default U-boat for that date, which is not changeable. What SH3 Commander does comes after this, during the patrol. If you choose a date and U-boat in SH3 Commander that matches the date and U-boat that the game allows for a career, you'll see a news report for that date, a map showing you the extent of German-controlled territory, and your U-boat will be set up for the correct crush depth for that sub. You will also get a special radio message based on that date, playable on your gramophone, and you'll have various graphics files - skins, etc., loaded into the game based on the choices you made in SH3 Commander.

When you set up in SH3 Commander for a single mission, it still will not choose the U-boat for you in the game, but unlike the career mode, you will have the full freedom to choose a U-boat that matches what you selected in SH3 Commander. The date you select in SH3 Commander will determine what date-based files (skins, radio sound files) are loaded into the game. The flotilla you select will determine what flotilla-based files are loaded into the game. Thus, if you play the Bismarck scenario, and if you've selected the correct date for the Bismarck's last battle, you will see the Bismarck in her proper paint scheme for that date (which is different than the standard game's Bismarck scheme), and you will hear a radio message that is appropriate for the period. If you want, you could decide that history can go hang, and you want to see the Bismarck fight in October 1939, so you choose that date in SH3 Commander and when you go into the game and choose the Bismarck scenario, you'll get a different radio message (the one for October 1939), and the Bismarck will be in her early war paint scheme.

So these are the kinds of changes that SH3 Commander is used for. What it mainly does is add historical flavour to the game. It doesn't alter the choices you need to make in the menu screens.

Remember to restore the games original files that MVP overwrote. Then delete MVP's backup. Only then remove using JSGME.

Once you've done that, whenever using SH3 Commander to start up SH3 will give you MVP skins automatically.

If you were to select the 23rd of October 1939 and the game then commenced the patrol on the 2nd November, does SH3Comm load files for the October or November?

The game is very imprecise when it comes to dates. Basically, the game can be off by a month, depending on what your NbDaysInBase setting is in Basic.cfg. RUb comes with 31 days as standard, so (because every mod I make is based on RUb) SH3 Commander's Newsmod is tuned to that setting. This means that when you use Newsmod, the date you set in SH3 Commander will set you up for a month ahead of that date. This works perfectly for careers (as it takes into account the 31 days between the date in the base and the date of the next mission) but it will be off by a month for single missions (i.e. if you set up for 23rd of October 1939, the game will actually load files that are correct for 23rd of October 1939). In practice it doesn't make that much difference, since the changeover dates are usually not that precise anyway.

Since MVP is basically a skins pack, you can leave it enabled while SH3 Commander is used. SH3 Commander will simply overwrite the skins when it needs to do so. If you uninstall the MVP, you should replace the skins with the standard skins (if you use the Mod Enabler it will automatically do this for you). If you remove MVP without replacing the old skins, and then if you ever load SH3 WITHOUT using SH3 Commander, you may get a crash to the desktop because the game may fail to find the necessary ship skins.

7zip is a pretty popular compression format, and you can find a link to the 7zip utility on my Links page.

One thing is for sure, if I used Zip to compress this file it would be over 100MB. I'd get a lot more complaints about that. :)

Thanks Beery -- but that just takes me to a bunch of sourceforge and surfnet mirrors that dont work

If it was 100Mb -- I'd download your file in about 5 mins -- I spent an hour trying to get 7z and I still dont have it.

Would you mind giving us the option by doing a Rar or a Zip ?

DANG! My own PC can't get online right now, and there's no way to download it.

Oh well, I guess I'm stuck with the last one for the foreseeable future. It works great anyway.

It looks reallly great Beery but...

I cant open it -- its in some strange esoteric compression -- My system doesnt have 7z capability and when I try any of the download mirrors they dont work or come up with "404 page not found" or just a blank page with nothing there

or if I google it i either get more non working mirrors or i get a set of sub sites with

"Download here"

Then another page full of crap and "Download here"
Then another page full of crap and "Download here"
Then another page full of crap and "Download here"
Then another page full of crap and "Download here"
Then another page full of crap and "Download here"

then to when I get to the actual source site - I get "Error 404 Page cannnot be found" :shifty:

Anyone thought of just compressing it with what everyone has got

Like winZip

thanks :)

I got 7-zip no problem last night straight from its site:

http://www.7-zip.org/

Was easy, honestly, easier than I expected.

The problem is that it's more a question of how many 100MB files my web hosting service will allow to be downloaded. These mods are very popular indeed, so it can be a big problem if I don't compress the files adequately, and Zip and Rar just don't achieve enough compression. A couple of months ago I uploaded a 45MB file and my data transfer limit (200GB) was exceeded in about 10 days. That's why I have to offer it in the best compression format possible, otherwise the files won't be available at all for most of each month, which would undoubtedly be annoying for most people. I already pay $40 per month to offer these mods, and for that I get the most data transfer that Yahoo offers. most web hosting services just aren't set up to allow the huge downloads that are necessary for today's mods.

Anyway, I just checked the link at my site. Went to a few of the mirrors for the 4.23 version, and the file was right there every time, so I'm not sure which mirror you're using.

Hi Beery...I appreciate the hosting & bandwidth issues and fully understand that .

However, I cant get any of those mirrors to work, I'm afraid

Perhaps i'm on an ip range those sites have restricted...I dont know... :-?

I'll try cracking it with WinRaR as Avon Lady said :lost:

OK, I still have the same issue with Commander 1.43 than in 1.42. When I click on Sumary, I get the following message : '.3' is not a valid integer value.
I'm running Windows XP in French. I've tried by setting the regional settings to English (US) but I get the same result...
Any idea ?

Pls PM me with details of the error - does it occur imediately when pressing "Summary"? Do you get a Career Summary text file with any content? Does the error occur with every selected career? Pls provide as much info about the problem as you can so that I can investigate. I may also seek copies of you career files.

Does SH3 Com change anything in the basic.cfg-file? Can't find a reference to it here or in the instructions, but...

I've edited it manually with the XXI fixes posted around here, but now somehow the battery drain/recharge time is reset to what it was before. My other changes are still present though. Strange...

Thanks, Nopileo

Yes. It's very flexible and very forgiving. You should have no problems with old careers.

It does change Basic.cfg files. If you don't want these particular changes, just open SH3 Commander and do a rollback. Then open the SH3 Commander folder and delete all the contents of the Flotilla folder. This will delete all SH3 Commander's Basic.cfg files, which will bring back all your original changes. Then you can use SH3 Commander as usual and it will retain all your settings for Basic.cfg.

I have a strange problem with SH3 Commander when I unarchive it.
I am using Power Archiver (7z compatible) and when I unarchive the file into my SH3 directory, everything goes where it's supposed to except for some reason the EXE file will not follow suit with the other files.

I end up having to select the EXE individually and place it in it's respected folder.

I haven't tried WinRAR, since I'm not a big fan of WinRAR.

Just thought it was strange, and nothing stopping me from successfully installing this.

Anyway, I tried it out and I like it! I like the crew management especially. Keep up the awesome work!

I use 7-Zip:

Supported formats: 7z, ZIP, CAB, RAR, ARJ, GZIP, BZIP2, Z, TAR, CPIO, RPM and DEB.

Works great, and it's free!

I've tried 7-zip and IZArc (http://www.izarc.org/). I prefer the latter. It can be a smidge slow, but it supports practically every compression format out there. Also a nice, simple interface helps (although it seems eerily like WinZip...).

Just a question, I was continuing an old career with SH3 Commander, in a VIIB in 1st Flottilla in Brest....February 1941. As I had already built up some renown I was hoping for an upgrade to a VIIC but saw I only had the choice of a IIa and D. So, where is the u-boat upgrade info listed in the cfg files? I am sure you guys did some research so when can I expect a VIIC as an upgrade?

Nopileo
08-04-05, 04:16 PM
Normally (game default) you should be offered a VIIC in flotilla 1 by now, but Sub Commander changes the dates for flotillas and which subs becomes available when and where.

So the only ways you can get a VIIC at this time are:

1. To load SH3 while you're in port after selecting 'Roll back SH3' in Sub Commander' and select the VIIC (and then exit and start using SubCom again if you wish).

2. Read up on www.uboat.net to check where and when the different types became available and change flotilla accordingly while using SubCom

3. Wait until one of the SubCom devs answers your question :P

Beery
08-04-05, 05:58 PM
The first VIIC of 1st Flotilla became operational in late April 1941. When using SH3 Commander you will see the Type VIIC available at the beginning of March.

SORRY :damn: FOR THAT 1111

Hello all

Am i missing something here, but when trying to download sh3 commander latest version from subsim (v1.43) or from u-boat.realsimulator.com I am getting two differents sizes .

In both case, a sh3commander.exe is missing.

I am doing something wrong ??

Had previous version installed, and when i hit my shortcut, still get the old 1.5 something without picture or history of the commander...

For those people experiencing the "'.3' is not a valid integer" bug, there is now a fix at www.beerymod.com/SH3CmdrEngine113.7z. To install, just use SH3 Commander to do a rollback, then unzip the files into the SH3 Commander folder, replacing the old SH3Cmdr.exe file and the old JoneSoft.txt file.

This bug only affects users in certain countries who have certain language configurations (France is one), so most people shouldn't need this fix. I've also updated the main download file to reflect this change.

Those who have experienced this bug may also want to change the months listed under "[CAREER DETAILS]" for current or completed careers in SH3Cmdr.ini to either German or English (ie based on what text setting they have in the game) with three characters, so (for example) instead of:

Erich Topp=06FéVR.12,Hamburg,73,01AVR.34,08JUIL.38,22Dà ©C.34,01OCT.35,01JUIL.37,01NOV.37,30,94,,,

They have:

Erich Topp=06FEB12,Hamburg,73,01APR34,08JUL38,22DEC34,01 OCT35,01JUL37,01NOV37,30,94,,,

This should get existing and completed career summaries to generate dates properly.

See your PM. Essentially, there appears to be a problem finding your core SH3 files, as the "Error!" text means that specific labels (such as flotilla and base names) can not be found in your Flotilla.cfg, Basic.cfg or _menu.txt files. Indeed, it appears that none of the core game files can be found (your rank is also missing). Where have you installed SH3? Have you moved it from its installed location? Do you get this result with other careers in SH3 Commander? When you respond to my PM, please include as much info as possible.
