View Full Version : SHIII Internal Life Mod Version 1.2 Released
I recorded the crash dive sequence from Das Boot and converted to ogg. and placed in all 9 folders. It played fine the first time in a single mission, but crashed and burned every time in campaign. I had to delete it. :hmm:

This one had slipped my attention earlier. Just downloaded it. I love modifications like these. Can't wait to try it. Thanks!

Just wanted to express my thanks for this. The internal sound was great, and I loved the new electric engine sound!

Glad you like it - Gizzmoe has kindly volunteered to record some suitable speech in German as soon as he gets a chance so I hope to start a new version soon

Sounds good, but would that be for the voices from crew or as part of the 'atmosphere' sound? I'm afraid that if there are spoken words in the loop sound, it would become repetetive almost no matter how long the sound lasts. The way it is now works great though. Two patrols using it, and still no 'repeting' feeling.
But if it is for the crew, that would be great. I play with english text and german voices, but I can't help myself for thinking that some of the voices could use some acting lessons... :88) Some of them sound really 'studio-like'.
Anyway, thanks for your work with this. It's things like these that really boost the atmospheric levels.

Thank you for your efforts KptnLt Eric Karle!
Looking forward to trying this as soon as download completes. I used your last mod and it was a great improvement to the 'dead' atmosphere especially since I'm on longer patrols in my new Type IX. Also will be looking out for your updated German version as well.

For the atmosphere sound.

There already are spoken words in the loop sound, two of them are rudder commands. Only these two need to be replaced. Maybe even a third one, but I can´t remember...

mate, what happens when the order 'rig for silent running' is issued? ie. does it still loop or is everything quiet?
Hi Payoff, yes I don't know the secret to recording sounds, I always make sure that the new version is the same format as the original (type (wav/ogg), mono/stereo, speed etc), but often they CTD, externally they play fine but certainly not in campaign, wish I knew the answer! :yep:

It also plays when you are running silent.

But it's still very quiet, especially compared to the first version of this mod, for those that recall it.

Yes the file, which is in wav format and replaces an existing wav file, does play all the time however the sounds are very faint and are simply there to add some atmosphere in the background. Obviously it would have been much better if there had been seperate sounds for silent/normal running but I think this is a good compromise. None of the sounds are loud enough to obviously interfer with the realism of silent running. With the next version I'm planning to increase the playing time to approx 20 minutes which will remove (hopefully) any chance that the loop will be noticeable.

I am too engrossed in the game to have ever noticed the looping point.
Seems some people have nothing better to do in a UBoat! :hmm:

Wow! Maybe you should distribute the new version as an Ogg file to keep the download small. amb_SubmarineInterior.wav is 11MB as a Rar file and 3.4MB as Ogg. Include the free/open source oggdec.exe (converts it back to Wav) and a small batchfile (oggdec amb_SubmarineInterior.ogg). That would make our 56k friends very happy! :)

Wow, I haven't noticed those. I've heard some voices, but I haven't been able to hear if they said anything particular. It just sounds like background mumbling. And I play with a headset. Very well done!
And I also think that the sound works good both in normal cruise and when going submerged/in silent running. The most atmospheric part is the sound of dripping water, IMO. Very nice.
Thanks again for this.

There's also dBpowerAMP (http://www.dbpoweramp.com/), for converting between various audio file types.

Thanks for that TAL, sadly its only a trial and an additional 2MB download. The Vorbis Tools (if I can figure out how to use them) are tiny and free so I'd have no problem including them with the Mod.

Why do you have to include them with the mod?
Just convert your mod from wav to ogg format and distribute the ogg! :dead: :-?

These are command-line tools, the documentation is more or less built-in (-h command option). Avon has given a link to a good program, you can use that to convert the Wav files to Ogg. As you don´t want to use the MP3 encoder it is also totally free. Set Frequency to "As Source", "Bit Rate" to 112 or 128 and Encoding to "Variable Bitrate".
Later they can be recoded to Wav with the tiny oggdec.exe.

Thanks again Gizzmoe, I have got software which will convert the files to ogg format (I use Soundforge) however I have no experience of using Command-line utilities so don't know how to run them  and if I am to include these utilities with the mod I'd need to provide an explaination to those who would need to convert the files back to wav's

Open Notepad, add these six lines and save it as recode.bat
oggdec data\sound\amb_submarineinterior.ogg
oggdec data\sound\submarine_electric_exterior.ogg
oggdec "data\Sound\Dive sequence.ogg"
del data\sound\amb_submarineinterior.ogg
del data\sound\submarine_electric_exterior.ogg
del "data\Sound\dive sequence.ogg"
Place it into the "SHIII Internal Life Mod v1.2" dir together with oggdec.exe. Also make sure that you have the three Ogg files in data\sound.
So you now have two dirs and two files under "SHIII Internal Life Mod v1.2".
[data] dir
[documentation] dir
oggdec.exe
recode.bat
Execute recode.bat, it converts the Ogg´s and deletes them after that. Try it out, it should work on your system.

That's great Gizzmoe thanks a lot
Why do you have to include them with the mod?
Just convert your mod from wav to ogg format and distribute the ogg! :dead: :-?
The mod is a wav file which replaces the amb_submarineinterior.wav in the sound folder so I would only be converting to ogg to reduce the download size for 56k modem users they would have to convert the ogg back to wav in order for the mod to work.

Oh, then don't bother with the OGG. If there's no way that SH3 can be easily reconfiged to play a different file, then just stick to the WAV.

You´ve missed the point, Avon! ;) It will include a program which converts the Ogg´s back to Wav. This solution makes the archive at least three times smaller.

I just ran a test and it works a treat converting a 35Mb Wav into a 4Mb ogg and back again. Thats the answer Gizzmoe, thanks mate :D

Salute! KptnLt. Karle!
Great stuff man! Keep goin'
I have to echo The Avon Lady though. Regarding ease of use IMHO keeping with original file type (MP3) would be best.
Super stuff though.

The original ones are Wav, not MP3. All you need to do is to double-click a batch file and wait a few seconds, so it´s very easy to use.

I agree it is very simple and automatic and the filesize savings are enormous - having said that I have yet to check if the compression ogg uses is completely reversed when you convert back to wav

The problem is that there doesn´t seem to be a free MP3->WAV converter which can also be used be used via command-line. Ogg is open source and patent-free, so it´s the best way to go.

It´s not a lossless compression. It´s like MP3, only better.

I just thought of something. Sorry if this has been discussed earlier.
The in-game music changes according to the 'mood' in the game, right? More dramatic when in battle etc.
Since probably not very many have the music enabled, would it be possible to replace these music files with atmosphere sounds?
So that when in battle, the sounds aboard the sub is more quiet and 'alert' like the one you've already provided, while when in normal cruise there are more sounds like normal background chatter, kitchen noises, walking around etc.?
Come to think of it, maybe these music files don't change in volume according to what station you are in like the atmosphere sound, so this would not work too well? Maybe a combination of the music files and and the atmosphere sound then?
Just a thought.
Anyway the current sound mod is awesome.
Regards,
Nopileo
Thanks! I really enjoy it! I`m on my first TCx1 patrol and it`s getting boring when it`s all quiet on the boat, but I really enjoy just laying on my bed and listen as my crew do their things!!!
