PROMISE KEPT!

At long last.

I am pleased to announce on behalf of former and current GWX-Knight's Cross Edition Development team members, that today we launch GWX-Knight's Cross Edition version 1.0 for Silent Hunter III.

We hope you enjoy it. It comes to you after MANY great difficulties, and hundreds of hours of collective labor.

Some rest is needed. Fleshing out this post further will happen as I feel up to it.

In the meantime, flip all the switches, turn all the dials, pull the levers, punch all the buttons, and Sink'em ALL!

One of the things I would wish for the AddOn the most is darker nights with the possibility of surface attacks.

This is huge news.

I think there are also some low-hanging fruit to give this new mod some punch.

The Hitman GUI add-on was/is in my opinion one of the most--I hate using the word 'accurate' but there it is-- periscope/Uzo/bino/ and concept how this was used. I would hope any periscope setup only has 1.5x and 6x magnification.

GWX was a massive tour de force (and the first mod I ever used). And the only thing that bothered be a bit was the 10x periscope mag.

Other than that.... I hope you enjoy massive success with this effort!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you, Leoz. You can consider your above concern "fixed" in GWX-Knight's Cross.

Believe me guys, I really want to say a lot more, but for now we are keeping things under our hat.

The time will come when more will be said. However, I think that you would all prefer it much more if we build it, rather than talk about it. :shucks:

The main thing to know right now, is that the GWX diesels are running at ahead standard right now, and in our book... that is a very good thing.

On another note, when I see some of the 'join dates' it is great to see some of the old gang still sailing. @ Hitman! It is great to see you as well!

Hello Kpt. Lehman,
Random saw the good news!:yeah:
I hope that with the release of the new mod, I will again want to complete a couple of combat campaigns of Operation Drumbeat.
I would like to ask a few questions.
1. I must admit that my favorite type of submarine is type 9C, what will be the level of historicity of the models, will there be a difference between type 9b and type 9c, as well as 9C / 40?
2. Will there be a new type 9D/2?
3. Will there be new explosions of torpedoes, depth charges and shells?
4. Will there be a difference between the US coastline and, for example, Europe or Africa, how much can this be changed?

Hi all.

I know I haven't posted an update for over a month.

The whole team has been holding the gas pedal to the floor for many weeks now, and we have been incredibly busy.

HUGE progress has been made, and we are keeping very quiet on purpose.

Remember, we are rebuilding and modernizing it more or less from the ground up after essentially more than a ten year absence.

Looking roughly at the time frame that I have already mentioned, I think that GWX - Knight's Cross edition is slightly ahead of schedule, but we will see how it goes. Some days we see MILES of progress, and others are a fist fight for every square millimeter.

At any rate, production remains in full swing. Just figured I'd let you all know.

Well, actually, I can, because you said it will be ready when it's ready and if there's one thing old sailors know, it's that you'd better not get the cook PO'd!

Anyway, I've been ashore for a couple of years, working on the railroad, and just re-embarked to see what's been happening out here, over the horizon.

Imagine the excitement for an old GWX Gold fan, seeing a "resurrected" GWX Team and hearing that there will be a GWX Knight's Cross Edition coming out.

Hi nik112.
We have decided to do something that I am sure will prove to be unpopular.
We are going to run mostly silent.
Not completely silent, but close to it.

I can assure you this though: Work on GWX-KC remains furiously and actively underway.... and I can tell you that the team is HIGHLY motivated to see it through.

The things I have posted before remain true.

Welding goggles are on all of our faces, sparks are showering in ALL directions, and the din of metal against metal is near continuous.

It will be worth the wait.
It will be ready when it is ready.

In the meantime,
Try to have a Merry Christmas and

A great deal of work has been completed, but a great deal of work remains ahead of us.

Gentlemen, (and ladies???)

I understand your curiosity.... I imagine that I might have the same feeling if I were standing in your boots.... but 'running silent' means exactly that.

I think that you might rather we build it.... than talk about it.

I do look forward to install this new update when it is ready and I am sure that playing it will help me in my long recovery fight.
Sink them all!!!

Cheers, lobomarinho.

It is always good to see an old salt from the Happy Times here.
I am sorry to hear about your tough health problems.

I wish that we could release it tomorrow.

However, you know how it is.
It is a massive animal, and because that is so, it has to spend a lot of time in in the big cooking pot.

Things are going very well for us. However, I don't want you to wait on us. It will be ready when it is ready.

Do this for yourself: For now, choose a different mod package and go on patrols. Sink stuff. Get depth-charged. Be inside the sim... and consciously choose to accept things that you might otherwise feel are not what you would hope for.

We have a little experience with our own health problems on the GWX Dev team... and I can say to you that getting immersed in the game itself... even if it is sometimes only sailing on the surface and listening to the wind and waves.... is often GOOD MEDICINE. The distraction, even when you can't always think straight because of the suffering, does a fair job of actually putting some of that pain to one side.

Heck, there's even been a fair bit of research using VR games with burn victims as a form of pain relief.

Don't wait for GWX-KC to do that, fellow Grey Wolf. GWX-KC is coming, but it is huge and ponderous. Each of us on the team has invested hundreds of hours.... if not thousands EACH.... and there remains much work ahead of us.

It can only be ready when it is ready.
Neal Stevens once described GWX as being the 'gold standard' of SH3 modding. What that also means for us though, is that we can never lower that bar. Keep the faith. Keep sailing....

.... and SINK'EM ALL! :arrgh!:

To everyone: There is no wish list. We have chosen what we will be doing and our path to accomplish it. We also know that (as in days past) though most of what we are doing will likely be loved, there will also be parts that may become controversial and may not be loved as much. The same is true of any modwork out there.

In the meantime, enjoy yourselves.... don't stress.

Been away from Sub Sims for yrs and am trying to get back into them but for one thing....my eyesight is not as it used to be and I fear I am getting too old to enjoy the game at a young 52.I know many here are getting up there in yrs so I make the suggestion of increasing the size of tools and decluttering them for ease of use as we age. :D

The below complaints are with the ARB Wide GUI but please don't take offense as I really love it but for my reasons below.

When I click the recognition manual I have a hard time seeing such small letters and on top of that the whole book is really dark.Even if the letters were slightly larger if the book is trying to simulate something by being so dark I just cant read it and the manual is worthless to me.

Next is the U-jagd in upper right corner is small and I cant read the numbers at all.Maybe one line is readable for me.

The compasses have so many lines and letters that I cant make anything out.Its so cluttered and I wonder why so many lines are needed? The small compass in lower right is cluttered with so many lines I must stare at it,squint, try to figure it out and then carefully click the tiniest line.Looking at an actual compass built into the sub and I can find North and everything else super easy.I can quickly set bearing for 30deg or set course for 190deg.The inner ring is a bearing indicator while the outer ring is the actual compass.

Just an example of a gui with a small U-jagd.Why not make it larger as the screen has the room for it.
https://i.postimg.cc/sDFD5HPk/hc-uzo.jpg

EDIT: just fired up stock SH3 and my eyes are not straining. The recognition manual is very legible and very bright and hence easy to read.Looking thru scopes and the heading at top is easily readable. The compass is the simple inner and outer ring and easy to make adjustments. Its the GUIs are trying to add in too much IMO and it clutters it all.

Hello, I'd like to report a little annoying bug I've found in the current GWX, so you guys can fix it if you'd like for the new update(edition?).
I'll just start off by saying I'm no expert on how SH3 works...
there is a bug when swapping to a new boat keeps the name of the old one, so you get a type 7C "U-11" for instance.
I believe the reason for this is that the new type of submarine becomes available a few months before the real type did, so the game is unable to find a matching name, because none existed at the time, thus the list of available names is empty and the name is not changed from the old type. This could probably be fixed by making it so players unlock new submarines later or messing with some file somewhere that determines which names become available when...
As I've said I'm no expert so this could be very wrong, its just my theory, trying to help.
Thanks for updating this amazing mod!
edit: i should probably add that I only noticed this on the Type VIIC, the type seems to be available 2ish months too soon to have a name.

Sent some traffic your way!!! A link to this thread has been posted at Wolves of the Kaiser on FB. There was a question if WOTK will have WWII units; I explained my mod is WWI only, but recommended GWX for a great World War II experience.

We do get some subsimmers in the Wolves of the Kaiser group but we also get casual naval sim players; many probably don't use subsim regularly and may not even know about the old GWX versions - let alone this edition. So this will clearly interest them. That's the great thing about subsims; there's something for everyone and every time period.

Aside from what we've already talked about :D I am eager to contribute more and return to the WWII theater once my workload decreases! All the best. :Kaleun_Salute:

By now, you all know that when I do, I will not say anything specific.

The main purpose of these posts, is to let anyone who may be interested know that the project remains in active development.

That remains true.

I would classify the current totality of what has already been completed by the GWX-KC dev team for the new build as massive.

It will be ready when it is ready.

Hello all.

Yes it has been a while since I raised my scope. I really only intend to do that every couple of months here on this thread as it is, and time just got away from me.

Work has continued without stoppage. A couple of us have had to fight some harsh illnesses, but even then, although some work slowed.... it never stopped.

I will say it again though, there is a lot to do. Even though the team possesses incredible modding power, there are fewer of us to do the job.

Back in SH3's high water days, we had as many as 25 people on the team.
That is no longer the case.

We have not bitten off more than we can chew, but it takes time. I am not going to state any sort of timeline for release here, because I know that the team is operating at capacity. I'm simply not going to push them harder. They are their own harshest taskmasters and I am not going to steal their enjoyment of the work by over-tightening the bolts.

We have made though, what I would describe as TRULY MASSIVE progress.... but there remains MUCH to do.

So as I've said before too.... Settle in. Enjoy yourselves with what is available to you already here at Subsim. GWX-Knight's Cross edition is happening. It will be ready when it is ready. :arrgh!:

I think most of us understand that Lehmann and his crew have worked out in some detail the answers to your questions, and don't need to intervene or use up design time having them detail those plans. If I know more details, what would I do about them?

Consider this: If I told you what our objective goals are (and they are considerable) and one of those goals was not met on release day, you would be disappointed in our work.

We aren't promising you individual items x,y, or z.

We are promising you a release.

You very well may get tired of waiting and get fed up.

You may think that GWX-KC is 'fake news.'

At its height in SH3's heyday GWX was downloaded hundreds of thousands of times after our releases. These days, maybe GWX-KC would just get 100. Either way, we are doing the same high-quality job. The work is often difficult and we are volunteers.

There is no delay, because it will be ready when it is ready.

I'm not upset.... just matter of fact. Besides, we are harder on ourselves than you could ever be.

When I post, I do so just to let you know that we are still working and the supply trucks are still arriving and departing.

Now quit reading this post and go sink something somewhere. :arrgh!:

I am, I am playing Fifi's NYGM mod trying to get back up to speed with SH3, while patiently waiting for GWX KC to come out. I remember how good GWX was and can wait for KC as long as it takes. :Kaleun_Salute:

I very well understand Kpt. Lehmann. The audiance is a lot smaller than when GWX was launch. I do not know how many people still play Sh3. I assume it is a dying community. The game is old but still hard to beat or so we think. And maybe we are old as well and still hanging on to it.

There is no need to create high expectations which you cannot fullfill. Take your time and have fun modding it.

I respect all effort the team is putting into it. Even if GWK KC edition will never reach publication.

maybe. I can understand why one might say that, but I'd advise holding out a lot of hope for SH3. I'm in my 20s, so are my friends who play these games, and we all agree that SH3 is the best Silent Hunter title. Certainly the best Atlantic War campaign game. Wolfpack has and will naturally poach a lot of players, but being that it has no campaign mode and no plan to implement one AFAIK, it fills a different niche.

Rest assured, there are younger types on the edge of our collective seat for GW RK edition.

What an irony that SH3 was going to initially come out without dynamic campaign until the outroar from the community made UBI listen and change that. Which in the end is nowadays regarded as the #1 feature of the game and ensured its longevity -and likely its continuity for many more years to come. :Kaleun_Applaud:

Hi Hitman, hope all is well. Fwiw, SH3 doesn't have a dynamic campaign. Not even close actually.

It's a good scripted campaign, but it's not dynamic by any means. :)

Hi John. I hope all is well with you.

I suspect that Hitman is referring to the .RND campaign layer that allows for a lot of uncertainty in encounters, their composition, and/or sometimes intentional lack thereof.

It is true that SH3 does not have a true 'dynamic campaign', in that the player cannot change the major outcomes of the war. It still ends with Germany's surrender.

However, it is arguably quite far from the definition of a 'linear' campaign in its truest sense as well.

The original IL-2 had a true linear campaign. Mission 1, followed by mission 2, followed by mission 3, with the same exact scripted contents in each mission.... wash, rinse, repeat etc.

Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 3 had a dynamic campaign that fit the truest definition in that as a German pilot, if you made the right type of decisions, Germany could win the war.

I think too that SH3 owes its longevity to the introduction of that .RND campaign layer.

GWX devs adjusted what was present there, and added over one million lines to the campaign files, as a result of what the SH3 devs allowed for by choosing to delay their release to add that .RND campaign layer.
The beginnings of that in GWX were humble.... starting with Rubini's harbor traffic mod. He, and then Bigboywooly, turned it into a Saturn V rocket and took it to the moon.
Primary historical events that you might hope to see, are always there.... but as far as the rest... it's never quite the same each time. That uncertainty... in my opinion is the gold-laden paydirt.

That make us all 'correct.' :D

The phrase "dynamic campaign" gets tossed around quite a bit for things that aren't; a pet peeve of mine. :) I wish it would be removed from the subsection title for SH3.

Apologies for another reply. I was heading out for an appointment with my first.

Anyway, there's a bit more to a truly dynamic campaign than just player results affecting it.
And the .RND file, as interesting as it can be, is still composed of scripted events. The game doesn't generate them on the fly, i.e.
It has a few parameters to throw in some randomness, but that's not dynamic. It is certainly a fun campaign. But it's most certainly not dynamic.
Anyway, fwiw. :)

Subsim: Kptn Lehmann:

As a very old (going on 90) Subsim participant from the first issue of SH3 thru the iterations of Wolves, may I make a few suggestions as you proceed with a highly anticipated new version of Wolves?

1. In the original SH3 as one proceeded on a patrol, a God's Eye view could show a variety of active shipping activities around the British Isles, not just the occasional appearance of a ship or small convoy near to the active sub's track which might (or might not) be within decent attack distance. (Yes, any actual sub commander would not have had this view...but the British admiralty did and so did Unterseeboot Commandant Doenitz). If such a view were available, the Subsim Kaleun could decide to move to a more high- traffic area. Now, I do not (repeat not) want to create a simplistic arcade game. But I do want to retain newbies who may explore the Subsim world.
do not want them discouraged by long, long empty periods (hours?) of nothing happening. I have experienced those with LSH3. A good program, but with long periods of nothing happening. The true periods of utterly boring hours of true Unterseeboot experience in WW2 may not translate well to the gaming world, if it wants to survive in the fast-paced world of today's gaming reality.

2. I doubt that Doenitz would be happy or satisfied with a Kaleun who returned with most of his torps unfired, for no particular reason. Would it not make sense to build in some penalty for sub commanders who return with too many (how to define that?) unfired torps just (perhaps) in order to begin a less boring or more profitable, new campaign? Now that we no longer benefit from 'points' in the program, I don't know what that penalty might be...maybe a delay in upgrade to a new model sub...dunno. But it seems reasonable.

3. Perhaps the Delete 'spot' could be larger, or a more vibrant color? My, yeah, aging eyes have trouble finding it. Maybe I am not alone.

Yes that's true John it's actually random more than dynamic (Aside from some small effects in the player like renown accumulated that allows you to option your uboiat, flotilla transfer and such), but the point is, it adds a lot of replayabilty value. Without that, SH3 would likely have already followed the fate of SH2 after exhausting the novelty :Kaleun_Cheers:

I was a Grey Wolves user for some time and after a long absence, recently came back to the Subsim world - logged onto the LSH3-2022 - and was pleasantly surprised that there were many folks still interested in the SH3 world. But, alas, that version is collapsing for lack of support by the original members, designers and the death of its founder.

It may be that your work and your designer's work will turn out to be the final existence of this program and its virtual world. I wish you well...and a hasty emergence of your program.

Heavy work continues on GWX - Knight's Cross edition.
There are far more miles behind us than are in front of us.
There are many moving parts in this juggernaut and we are working through all of them in a methodical way.
There was a little dip in production during the holidays, but the engines have been running at 'ahead standard' again for some time now.

May I bother you with another recommendation...well I will, tho' you may ignore it.

Why not interleave the users active Kaleun's tonnage into the displayed collective tonnage of the leading sub commanders? I don't think that would constitute a major programming hurdle. It would inject the player into the game in an overt way...that is, "Hey, the game knows I'm here!"

Anything to keep and personalize interest for the player with the competition out there.

No need to reply - just (maybe) add it to the "is this possible?" discussion list, which I understand is probably rather long.

If you are talking about the U-Boat Aces list? That is the UboatAces.cfg file.
It is not dynamic so would require a custom program to update it.
You'd have to exit the Game, run a custom program to read files and then it would update the UboatAces.cfg.
Next time in Game? You'd see the updates.
Can that be done? Yes it could be done. Will it be done? Time will tell.

Hi everyone.

I know it has been a long time since I've had anything to say about our work.

Naturally, I don't speak in any detail about our work, but I will give you some general insight about where we are, and what has been going on around that.

Firstly, I am happy to say that I believe that in relation to distance traveled, we are at what I believe to be the 85-90% mark of reaching our conversion to the Beta phase of operations. We have set internal deadlines for when that conversion to Beta is to happen. (I define our "Beta Phase" to mean and/or be, when the hatches are dogged tightly shut against any new/risky modification integration and the included material is basically finished with some 'safe' material being polished.)
We are running at ahead standard to get there, and must be careful of the engines. We are not young anymore, and we aren't as quick as we used to be for that reason. If you think of the rock bands of the 1980's and 90's.... and then look at them now.... you get the idea. Very skilled, but not as agile or flexible, so care must be taken.

A bit of honesty here. Without looking, I believe that it was following the construction of our eleventh Alpha, we ran over and past the 4gb (3.86gb actual) memory budget that ALL modders must tolerate and accept. We had to pull back from that cliff after grabbing fistfuls of cactus to arrest the fall, ... AND make even a little more breathing room for safety.
Guys, this was painful. Very VERY hard decisions had to be made, and some elements we had hoped to bring, had to be canceled.

Even using new optimization methods that the community here has not instituted in any sort of global way, and even if we could open that memory budget (which we cannot) it would be fair to say that we modders would fill it to the brim. We would, even then, be left in the same position.... fighting to not overstep the memory budget.

We are currently working with our THIRTEENTH Alpha version, and it is proving to be rock solid STABLE in line with the performance of the old GWX 3.0 title!
(Tastes like good chocolate, this! Even when we know things are quite good, we sometimes hold our breath and forget to breath.... because KC transforms SH3 in so many ways. It feels like we are sometimes handling explosives that become more powerful with each passing day.)

I also want to say something important about the Grey Wolves Knight's Cross edition development team:

It has been an honor to work with this crew to resurrect the title... The level of dedication to that mission has been astounding, and I want to recognize that right now. During the course of development, this crew has overcome deaths in the family, natural disaster resulting in months-long displacement to alternative housing, multiple life-altering ailments, multiple surgeries, heavy workload, difficult conversations, dark weeks of tedious problem-chasing, painful decisions requiring cuts, necessary course alterations, and a small horde of real life responsibilities that work against us. Though we have had some individuals give us some great help and move on.... the core team of heavy lifters.... has taken many punches to the face and have kept going.... very notably, WITHOUT PAY. Additionally, no one signed on to run for this long. They are the best of the best, and when release day arrives, you will see just how voluminous body of work they have produced.

We know that it is taking a long time, but it takes as long as it takes.

This is a work of passion, and it will be ready when it is ready.

That is enough for now. I'm going back to work. Periscope down.

< sigh. I guess this post will be buried quickly too. Them's the breaks, I suppose. >

GWX remains a great option for people until a new one is released and it is not comparable to the original game. I hope he will not suffer the fate of U-BOOT_HAHD by Hans Witteman.

We will not suffer the same fate as U-BOOT_HAHD.

< I decided to be shameless and copy the text of my update post here, as it was immediately buried in the last page. >

Lehmann, I first played your mod when I was around 17/18 and it was one of the most fantastic gaming experiences I have ever had.
Combined with SH3 Speech there are moments from that era I have been chasing the dragon to find again.

The technical achievement, the level of detail and historical accuracy gave me so much to chew on and discover in ways no museum tour, documentary or anything ever good.

Moreover the experience spilled over from just a game, the knowledge I gained and the long hours of contemplation whilst I listened to the gramophone before being suddenly interrupted to sink some tonnage had me thinking about war, the duality of man and empathy with people on the "other" side.

I feel a better more enlightened person, stupid as it sounds, thanks to playing GWX so much.

I recently found myself playing UBOAT now that has released and whilst it's pretty damn close and it some ways surpasses what is possible under the SH3 engine (particularly when modded) it never quite reached the depths of GWX.
With the release and many of those mods requiring an update being left out to dry I couldn't help but feel somewhat disappointed and yearned for GWX again.
However I have been spoiled by ultrawide and 32gb of ram, along with an already complicated install process made worse by different versions of windows resulting in GWX and the hardcode fixes never quite working right.

To see that you guys have come together again to make GWX KC fills me with a hope I haven't felt in year, an absolute joy and slight tear in the eye.

You guys are an absolute inspiration in so many ways I can not convey to you through words.

I thank you and your entire team from the absolute bottom of my heart and I wish all of you the very very best in all aspects of your lives.

@Rik007 maybe someday GWX-KC will have voice commands. :)

As you are the commander you have to use your voice to manage the boat.

The huge advantage is that you do not need to use your keyboard. You can game in darkness and fully focus on sh3 without looking for keys....

Playing Sh3 without VoiceAttack is boring. Like I said: I cannot do without voice commands.

You can pick the basic profile from the Night surfact sttack project and change them to your taste. :) It is totally free. Voice Attack cost you a few bugs but it is worth it.

Thank you for the insights, Rik007.

At my house, I have to be quiet at night. Just in my situation, it is smart for me to use the keyboard and headphones. Otherwise, Admiral Lehmann will depth charge me. :ping::haha:

The complaints can be overcome as I know from experience :)

I can vouch for that. My household thought it was funny at first but has some to appreciate the seriousness of the situation when they hear KptLt Tabris say "ready tube 1..." to his computer.

It's also a great asset for streaming. A big problem with streaming complex games is that unless you're using your mouse for everything, your viewers can't tell what hotkeys you're pressing. With Voice attack, your viewers get the whole picture, they know what commands you're giving as you issue them.

Merry Christmas!

As someone who has recently discovered the Silent Hunter series (Uboat fan here), the amount of time, work, and dedication some of y’all have is amazing. I’ve been trying really hard to get SH3 working on my steam deck (travelling dad… it’s the only way I can game anymore) and have gotten close, but there are still a few things preventing me from playing.

Looking forward to this release and seeing if it’s the mod that takes!!

Just a quick question...

With all the effort put into this upgraded mod, has anyone tested it on Windows 11 version 24H2 to see if it crashes like the OneAlex mod does?

It would be a shame to see that, when this mod is released, it is unable to run on the latest version of Windows 11.

I think people traced the crash to the wide screen GUI and the modified d3d9.dll.

Just saying...

As far as I know its ok there, Others on the team run Windows 11+latest and Ive not heard anything about it crashing, I still run windows 10 - support ends in september and Ill probably bite the bullet and go with a Dual boot with Linux as a primary OS, Had enough of MS really, Windows getting ever more bloated and ever less democraric - abit like a government :P
