Wake up! It's that time of year again!:o:woot::rock:

I was afraid the thead was going to jump the shark like shark week, but this years' pre-season drama sure looks tantalizing.

I guess this years theme is the "Rise of the Sophomore QBs."

RGIII?
Russell Wilson?
Andrew Luck?
Colin Kaepernick?
Ryan Tannehill?

So I just have to read about my team on the Internet.

I retired when the score was Dallas 17 to Miami 3 in the 4th quarter (yawn)

but it's nice that football is back :yeah:

Tebow will be throwing and not receiving. Of course he will be throwing from the sidelines. Brady will not sit down. Although, Tebow might be the answer to the choke experienced by Brady in the past years playoffs. Sorry August. Had to be said. Hernandez will be watching from his new address.

Of course me being a dirty bird Ravens fan, our line up defected after Flacco was given the golden key to the payroll vault. That is OK as we need some young talent on the field. Our boys who have played the past five plus seasons are starting to feel the pain.

I'm pretty sure that Tom has a few more good years left but I predict he will take a lot of knocks this year because he's lost so many of his receivers, especially the go to ones like Welker.

As for Tebow though he is never going to be taking the field unless both Brady and his backup Ryan Mallet are injured or he plays Tight End or some other position beside QB.

A week or so ago coach said he is throwing. I wonder if tactics are changing for the Pats. I noticed with Brady that he is killing the other team or he gets rattled and caves. Game lost. Perhaps Tebow will be the go to guy on the days Brady is not playing for keeps.

Tom Brady injured at Patriots practice

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -- Patriots quarterback Tom Brady limped off the practice field after appearing to hurt his left leg while throwing a pass.

Brady had left tackle Nate Solder pushed into him by a defender after throwing a fade to rookie Aaron Dobson that fell incomplete, and the former league MVP ended up on the ground holding his leg.
He took a few more snaps before talking with coach Bill Belichick and walking off gingerly but without assistance.
He was met by a member of the team's athletic training staff and walked to the adjacent indoor practice facility. He had not returned to the field after about 30 minutes.
Brady tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during a game in 2008 and missed most of that season.
The Patriots were holding a joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Ryan Mallett replaced Brady at quarterback.

Fear? Fear of what? I saw a bad season coming when they released Welker and Woodhead. Hernandez's self destruction was just the icing on the cake.

The good news is that Brady only sprained the knee. No torn ligaments or other major damage. I guess he'll probably sit out the pre-season games to be ready for the season opener in Buffalo.

They picked up Matt as soon as the Chiefs signed Alex Smith. And from what I saw on the local sports show, Ponder is getting a bit better, but still making the same mistakes he made last year. He hasn't figured out how to throw off his back foot yet. One nice thing about Matt in the preseason game against Houston, I think that was the first time a Vikes quarterback has thrown for over 200 yards in a game in at least a few years anyway!:woot:

My Niners have patched up the reciever holes it had last year.

Anquan Boldin is in the house.

We got Kaepernick, who played so cool in the biggest stage in sports a few months ago, he really impressed me.

Go Niners, after all the misery we had, 5 win, 8 win seasons, for once we can be optimistic.

On paper, they are the number one team.

How it pans out in reality is anyones guess, but it looks great for them.

Hopefully Colin Kaep does what he did last year, and look to pass first and not fall into an "RG3" pattern, and hurt himself constantly running.

On a side note, Alex Smith is a great pickup for the Chiefs, Harbaugh fixed him, KC will compete with him, Alex is a good qb, he was always used wrong.

On paper, like Madden stats, they are number one.

On paper is simply based on stats and performance, it is simply a prediction.

No one expected on paper 2 years ago, the 49ers would go the NFC championship game, they were an 8 win team the year before.

On paper means nothing, as every game must be played.

(Tom Brady took a pay cut to save salary cap room, that is a true elite.)

I feel that they jumped too hard on Joe Flacco, it hampered the Ravens ability to keep and pay Boldin, allowing the Niners to scoop him up with draft picks.

Flacco is not an elite qb, and should not have been paid like one.

IMHO of course.

As for Boldin being double teamed, it leaves one of our other guys open, and with a competent qb with a run game, and a sonic cannon shoulder, I feel Boldin will fit in nicely.

Ray Lewis will be missed, him and Strahan are 2 modern day defensive legends. My 2 favorites since Charles Haley, and Lawrence Taylor.
Edit: Watch out for the Chiefs, Smith will improve them.

In your opinion of course. :03:

Agreed. Once the cash vanished so did the players looking for better pay and deserved better pay.

Flacco is not an elite qb, and should not have been paid like one.

His stats say otherwise. :03:

Ray Lewis will be missed

His presence on the field? Certainly. Needing him the game to win? Not really. He spent a better part of last season on the bench.

Not being mean AVG, Just do not get Flacco.

He is not in the same class as Eli Manning or Tom Brady, or even Aaron rodgers.

Sure stats...But that brings us back to the "on paper" discussion, know what I mean?

Too much money for him, with no one around him, what can he do, at least RG3 and Vick can run.

I cannot predict the final outcome, I just want it to be be Ravens Niners again:D

It was so much fun last time, wasn't it?:salute:

AVGWarhawk
08-16-13, 09:10 AM
RG3 and Vick are not elite QB by any stretch of the imagination. Eli, Brady and Rodgers make it look pretty and easy. Flacco does not have that finesse as seen by great QB. However, a QB does not need need to make it look pretty to be successful. Let see how Brady fairs with Welker gone and Hernandez locked up. Fact remains, Flacco has not missed post season play since becoming QB in Baltimore. That is not stats. It's in the history books.

I do not see the Ravens up against the Niners again this year. We lost a lot of good talent. All the same, it was a great game and one to remember for years to come!

I am fearful of talking too much crap.

Bad karma and such.

Just make sure you guys beat any New York, or NFC west team you come across.

I hated the Ravens in the bowl. Hated to see a brother on brother, (even if John helped jim with info on the Pittsburg game last year ) No real reason for me to hate them, and I love Ray Lewis. He is the Derek Jeter of football, the guy who makes a difference with only his presence.

I can see the Ravens up there in the AFC.
I do not see Denver as being able to compete, despite the losses to the Ravens..

The difference will be John Harbaugh, A fine coach, from a fine stock. He will adapt and overcome.

Seeya in the big game next year, the world will be sick of Harbaugh brother Super Bowls. :D

I am feeling all sentimental, this is the third one I am participating in.

Manning up now...

A name you will hear alot of this season....

Colin Kaepernick.

Hard name to read. (cap-er-nick)

You will hear it alot, the kid is really the next best thing.
Got a great brain for a qb, a cannon for an arm, and runs the 40yd dash faster than all the recievers.

I mean we all saw the Super Bowl, last year, he had great poise, but I hear so little from the ESPN and sports "pundits" on him.

Just like 2 years ago, when they were crap, and made it to the NFC championship game, and no one thought they could get that far. the red and gold will have to force respect out of people, again...

Most preseason games got second and third string defenses, and the guys are not hitting as hard.

Kaep looks to pass first,he more than proved that, and kinda learned from the RG3 fiasco, with him getting injured constantly running. Kaep got a cannon of an arm.

I mean a noob in the superbowl (and the league in general), and he was mister cool. He almost won it...Almost is crap, but he had the right stuff.

I saw a pic on the 49er twitter of Kaep hugging Alex Smith and felt kinda sad, Alex did so much for the niners, and he took this with grace. KC is going to be a good team this year thanks to him. Good man, and a solid qb.

I say Jim Harbaugh is to credit for both men, an ex qb himself.

 I wasn't saying that to be mean, I am just happy to patch up the holes in my own team. We had one real reciever, the rest was Vernon Davis, the tight end.

If it wasn't for our run, we would be dead, something the Ravens stuffed well in the bowl, not an easy feat.

Much respect here, I was in jaw dropping awe when I saw that trade. It just seemed so foolish for the Ravens.

The other team members watched any type of increase in pay vanish with a swish of a pen. I can't blame them for leaving. So now we have a team of young players making less pay so the owner can afford Flacco. We will see where it goes. It will not go to the Super Bowl for a long time I can assure you that!

Any team would be a fool to discount Aaron Rodgers.

With all the attention on other teams the Pack is no longer "the hunted", they just may slide in there, it just depends on how well they upgraded defense and the run game, which were glaring holes last year for the Pack.

Good luck to you, I am a huge Rodgers fan. Great qb, and a down to earth kinda guy.

The Bills still have 3 on the roster:
Maneul, Tuel and Lewis

They still have to cut 2 more players to get to 53. I don't know that I see them cutting 3 just to make room for Tebow. Though they have an injured O lineman that may end up on PUP or IR.

Well the best of their QB lot is an undrafted rookie. Tebow might be a better choice.

They also have 8 defensive linemen currently on the roster which is two-three more than they were expected to run. That could be where the cuts come from along with one of the weaker qb backups.

Just a thought...

Not officially ... that happens next Saturday when the team has to be down to what 53 players I think.

I would keep him ... 16 games is a long season ... the fans are a bit picky in New England though. Maybe they will stay silent ...

Someone will pick him up if not right away then during the regular season after someone gets hurt. Heaven forbid it should be the Denver Broncos or the NY Jets :haha:

I wish LA had a team ... they could go all the way with a guy like Tebow.

I know this is about the NFL, but that quarterback for Texas A&M number 2 sure looked good today. Number one draft pick if he stays healthy. I even think he's a junior no less.

Clay is so classy.

Too bad Kaepernick is not a run first qb, like RG3 or Micheal Vick.

He has a great arm, and he has great recievers, a great running game (though not obvious in week one)

He is not a typical mobile quarterback, he is looking to throw first, his speed is a defense mechanism for the times his line crumbles or no one is open.

Clay Matthews is a punk. He hit him so far out of bounds, he should have been fined and ejected.

That so called running quarterback racked up 400 plus yards passing. (edit : just the threat of him running is enough to back off all out pass rushes)

Very much right, sir. But he has the right stuff IMHO.

Seattle is a nasty team, a team I fear as a fan, we have to play them twice.

Russel Wilson is a great QB, very fast on his feet, great arm and good instinct, Marshawn Lynch is a great RB. The team is coached well, and Seattle/SF is a nasty rivalry, kinda like Yankees/ Red Sox except with violence.

I am not getting ahead of myself, and seattle is the only team that truly worries me. They got the right stuff.

I used to live out there, and they have a beautiful stadium, across from Kings field I think they called it, what an experience, I watched my Niners lose, yet still had a ball. damn that was awhile ago, 2002 maybe... Geez

Kaep is still young, and Harbaugh lets his qbs call audibles if they read something, very hard to call audibles in that noise. Which leads to delay of game penalties. You saw it in the first half of the Super Bowl last year.

Second week in a row the 49er defense failed to show up. We didn't get lucky this time.

I am not so much disgusted, just disappointed.

Good job to Seattle, I knew it was going to be tough, last time we played there we lost by 40 points.

I almost feel a sense of pride, considering the NFC west was the worst division in the league for awhile, now it is quite strong.

First thing,

How about Alex Smith and the KC chiefs?!

Good for him.:yeah:

Alex is a good egg.

I was watching NFL network this morning, and Michael Irvin and Warren Sapp were doing a segment, the question came up about the worst division.

Afc North, or NFC East.

Sapp laid in a potshot "I know you are biased because you were a lifelong cowboy", Irvin got visibly irritated.

He even interrupted in one of those no interrupt, timed segments. (you get 30 seconds to debate your point.)

It was tense, and very much real. I cannot describe how Irvins face changed.

Watching 2 legends tussle in retirement is pleasing to me.:D

(edit: Irvin was more on the side of right in the debate, the AFC north is way worse.)

NFC west is king now! Accept it!

I'm not bashing the guy by any means...but, perhaps Kaepernick is not quite what he seems? A little less bicep kissing and concentrating on the play might serve him well. I would also think he relies on the run(him doing the running) to much and has forgotten the rest of the plays. Opposing teams are defending against his running. I suspect the coach ask that he does not run. He will get nailed one of these plays. The 49er will have a multi-million dollar bench warmer. I watched the entire game and honestly do not know what the answer is for Kaepernick. If it continues I would suspect he will be seated.

And again, I'm not undermining what he has done and can do. But I know the feeling of having your QB beat to death by others that say he sucks and if it were not for defense the team would not go anywhere. Flacco gets zero respect.

He needs to get comfortable throwing into tight coverages, threading the needle so to speak. Also, he has gone way from Boldin, the most physical receiver on his team. Throw him the ball even in coverage and he wins most of the battles.

Rough week for the Pack, still early though. I would rather fight and claw our way through the season vs. what we did a few years ago and get bounced from the playoffs early. It's all about finding our stride, getting the team healthy and preparing for the long haul of an NFL Season.....

I agree 100%. Having your team intact for the playoffs is almost as important as making the playoffs itself.

I like the way my Denver team is playing even though they are missing so many key guys. They have given up way too many points, but they have stuffed the run very well. (nice surprise) Getting Champ and Von Miller back should help them better defend the pass. (I can hope)

The Packers I see the last game as a hiccup but the Bears in that division also look good. The 49ers might have some issues and I don't think they are as strong as last year. Baltimore has rebounded strong after their opening day loss.
The Giants.....geeze, what happened to those guys?????
Biggest surprise so far.....Kansas City.

I enjoyed the game last night. It's a chess match between Manning and the defence every game, and he is winning.
It's scary what they could do if they stay healthy and get all their players back.

Yeah the Giants situation is pretty shocking, they seem to be totally out of sync.

Be interesting to see how the Pats hold up when they face tougher competition. Their game this weekend should be interesting as it is in Atlanta, and the Falcons are looking to rebound from their loss on the weekend.

Seattle vs. Houston should be one to watch as well as will Miami vs. New Orleans.

Hopefully the pack will be re-energized coming off the bye, plus the defence really needs Burnett back, he calls all of their plays and has been missed.

Glad to see the 49ers woke up for this one.

As much pomp and circumstance I put on our rejuvenated offense, the benchmark of this team is defense.

Something not seen until last night.

Green bay. Was a Shootout, we got lucky that the Packers defense is not so good.

Seattle, a hell of a well rounded team. Will be a problem for not only us, but anyone who has to play them.
I can even see them winning the Super Bowl this year, they really are a great team.

Colts...I had to swallow down a little vomit at this loss, a complete offensive, and defensive meltdown.

Last night.

Great game for the Red and Gold! Defense and Rushing, the benchmark of the 49ers recent success, showed up.

Kaep did his job, didn't make any mistakes, made the plays when he had to.

Very encouraging, as I had flashbacks of 4 years ago....:wah:

Not bad without 2 pro bowl players on our defense. (Aldon Smith and Patrick Willis)

Great pick Whitner, pure hustle!

49er's needed to get a W on the board. Each game is huge if you want to be in post season play. For that reason alone I can't stand a short season. Baseball is 100 plus games. A lot can happen. However, football being so physical we can't expect 100 plus games. As a result, ever game counts big.

I think the short season is what makes it so exciting.

I seen stats that Football has long taken over baseball as Americas Pastime.

I mean the physicality of the game combined with a short off season.

How bad is a team when you lose 34 to 3, (trust me, the niners could have ran the score up easily) when the opposing qb (Kaepernick) is 6-15 with 113 yards?

(edit: Niners had great D....With alot of starters missing from our d-line, injuries, one of them is in rehab, for being a drunk...Bad stuff on our defense)

The niners started throwing in third stringers, it was silly.

I like Kaep alot, I even, in my post acknowledged he did next to nothing, in this game. I acknowledge he has alot to prove, but he got the right stuff IMHO, great poise in the super bowl as an inexperienced player. I also acknowledged a few times in this thread and last years thread, that he has his problems, he has trouble in crowd noise, and runs too much. He fixed the running thing this year, as he is much more of a passer.

You gonna beat on me this whole thread?

I'll keep answering, I am a hardheaded sort.:O:

And since we are talking about Legacy wins, last year was the first 49er loss in the Bowl.

Joe is the patsy for the Ravens losing Ray Lewis etc.

I critisized the contract he was given, but understand why. A battle hardened, tough qb is hard to come by in this modern league. As much as it pains me, he outplayed my beloved Niners stifling defense, even despite the comeback pressure, he endured, that stands for something.

On a side note , look at Alex Smith in KC...:D

Joe has always been a patsy. For years we hear if it was not for our defense we would never win. Sadly, the offense needs to score a few to win. So I don't understand the logic of only the defense as being the part of the puzzle that is only needed to win. :hmmm: I agree that Flacco's contract was crazy. But, he asked and they said ok. Can't blame him. We miss Ray on the field but the D is doing just fine. Time for some young players to find their way to play every game and become great players.

Manning calling his own number for a naked bootleg. He made the decision based on the defense and his own teammates didn't know.

Didn't Joe Namath do this once late in his career and it worked because on his rickety old knees, it was ridiculous to do, which is why it worked?

Also:
Late in this game with a tied game.... on a 3rd and a half yard on the two yard line, Peyton turned around and told Knowshon Moreno to get the first down but don't score. Moreno argued, but Peyton insisted that they cannot give Dallas the ball back with time left. Knowshon got the first down, did not score, and they ran out the clock before kicking the winning field goal with no time left.

Gotta think getting burned by Flacco in the playoffs last year had something to do with him asking Moreno to do this.

When you watch the replay you can tell his teammates, especially the back who did not get the ball do a collective wtf, until they realized what Manning was doing.

Just another example of Garrett being asleep at the wheel. The Cowboys line should have parted like the Red Sea and tried to get Moreno's momentum to carry him across the line. Try something at least, they seemed clueless.

My 49ers played well.

Great defense. (4 takeaways, and a safety after a tipped interception) Rushing attack, what you expect from the modern 49ers.

Vernon Davis with 180 yds recieving seems to be over his injuries, Kaep, played much better.

But I have to admit, our defense won this game, hopefully when we get Mario Manningham and Micheal Crabtree back, we can be more multi dimensional than we have been.

Boldin can only do so much (he is strong, and talented, but undersized), and Vernon Davis, (who is a tight end, and blocks some plays) can only do so much.

I hear trade rumors about getting Hakeem Nicks from the Giants in a trade, but with what he makes, and the fact he will be gone next year it is a bad bad move.

Why did the Jets even go to overtime against the Pats? Pats are losing that allure.

Unsportsmanlike conduct on a missed field goal? Good job NE, what the heck happened to them?

Automatic first down...

Colin Kaepernick is letting his legs out against the Titans D.

Kaep is letting his legs do some talking this week, exploiting a weak run defense, 10-0 niners. As I type, my red and gold picked off Jake Locker.

Defense, run game, check....That is the niners I am used to.

I got a nasty habit of still calling them the Oilers, I bet they miss Warren Moon. Meh Titans.

We are still a force to be reckoned with.

I likes Favre's response on the NFL channel.

"It took me twenty years to figure out I didn't like getting hit."

He won't be back - he is looking at a first ballot HOF entry. No reason to delay that.

4-3 for my Panthers - now our schedule gets tougher. Falcons are no pushover, plus the defending SB champs, the Patriots and the Saints 2x...

We will find out if we are for real or not soon!

A few points for me today on this NFL subject.

After a sloppy start my niners are looking great, not as good as I would like, but, hey, I cannot complain as a fan.

Holy crap, the Jets!

Much more holier of a defacation, the KC Chiefs.

I say this mid season, so no one can call me a front runner or some stuff...

If the niners do not make it, I am all in on KC. Go Alex Smith.

He is showing the Niners up big time. I love the guy. Let me go? I go 9 and 0. (poet and didn't know it, if read in the right cadence)

He caught hellfire for 8 years, Not worthy of the number one pick, overrated etc.

Though Alex does owe coach Harbaugh a year of his salary for turning him into a quarterback.:D

Manning getting dinged has been the way of things the last three games.
