View Full Version : The Ashes 2013 Thread
OK will Australia get a win this series or will the Poms prevail?
Australia with it all to play for and England looking the form side out of the two.
Boycott has some interesting things to say: http://www.smh.com.au/sport/cricket/easy-series-win-for-england-no-they-are-not-that-good-20130709-2pn79.html
I for one will be getting little sleep over the next 6 days as the 1st Test kicks off tomorrow night our time.
Best of luck to both sides.
Gentlemen, raise your glasses for the Ashes series 2013!

Steven Finn will be England's third fast bowler in the first Ashes Test with Australia at Trent Bridge, with the tourists springing a major surprise by picking little-known spinner Ashton Agar.
The Middlesex fast bowler got the nod ahead of Yorkshire's Tim Bresnan but he will have to wait for his chance to shine - England captain Alastair Cook won the toss and chose to bat.
Australia meanwhile sprung a major selection surprise by picking left-arm spinner Agar.
Agar, just 19, has played just 10 first-class matches - the first in Janaury this year - but he will make his Test debut at Trent Bridge.
He played in Australia's last warm-up match against Worcestershire, returning modest figures of 2-79 off 23 overs and 1-86 off 27 in the second innings.
Agar, 6'4" has played for the Australia U19 and U20 sides, and he plays his domestic cricket for Western Australia.
He was a surprise inclusion in the squad, but few expected him to be named in the starting XI.

Pah! early days :stare:
The Agar selection is definitely a surprise. Not seen much of his work and a big ask to debut in the 1st Test. Good luck to him hope he gets a bowl and knocks a few wickets over.
Jimbuna
07-10-13, 06:18 AM
That's probably part of the selection justification...the fact he has no form to study and will be offering something unexpected and different.
Aside from that boundary first up his first over looked pretty tidy. Getting plenty of revs on the ball, good flight and a bit of bounce.

Another couple of wickets after lunch. Yum yum! 147-4 Still reasonable even with a slight advantage our way. Another wicket soon would make things very interesting.

He played at No3 in club cricket and this is his 3rd first class 50. highest 1st class score 71. He's batted for time rather than trying to dominate and cold teach the higher ups a few things about timing and patience by the looks of it.

Listening to the after match reports on the car radio whilst driving to pick up the wife from work and it is reckoned two game changing errors were made....the run out/stumping of Agar very early into his innings and the lbw for Trott (he's adamant he hit the ball but the tv company had it frozen for an earlier ball reference to Root).
And that folks is how fairy tales come to be.
The cons need to remember those two decisions the next one they get against them.

The Ashes - a competition that started when Britain took defeat way too hard, and burnt the body of English cricket (while it was still alive :o), and now they play the great game (tell that to my Mum, she turns the radio off whenever crickets on) against their (superior) opponents. The prize is the charred remains of something that never existed.

If we can take a 250 run lead the match is winnable.

I think the record at Trent Bridge for a fourth innings win is around 284 so it would mean setting a new record and let's be honest...your major batsmen are performing even worse than ours atm :)
True that. Seriously, I've little confidence in our ability to make much more than 180 on this wicket. The openers have been dismal the last two seasons and down to the top 4 its been pretty woeful.

One of the best things about an Ashes test is the fact neither side will give in and I'd like to think we'll last an hour in the morning and close in on three hundred but that may be a little too much to ask.
There are two days left, plenty of time for either side to win it through batting or bowling...I think it is too close to call.
One thing is certain though...the Aussies were beat at 117 - 9 and owe EVERYTHING to young Agar but I can't see him being such a sensation in the rest of the series so they will have to buck their ideas up because for me they are still the underdogs by a country mile.
Next transmission from down under when a wicket falls...'fair weather' supporters :)
Just woke to the news of Broads reprieve. I wont whinge like a pom about the crap umpiring but will lament Clarke's two blunders in taking the new ball when Prior came in and choosing to use DRS on the Bairstow appeal.
You'll only hear from me when I'm awake. The pommy batting was putting me to sleep so I drifted of to bed at around 2am my time.
Still a lot of cricket to be played, but I fear those crucial blunders may have cost us the test. A few quick wickets tonight and we'll see how well we can bat. As I said earlier on this pitch we'll be lucky to make 180.
Jimbuna
07-12-13, 04:14 PM
I sincerely hope your right regarding the '180' prediction but be honest, you were given two wicket decisions yesterday in extremely dubious circumstances.
As for the Broad reprieve, it all started years back with Ian Chappell when he instructed his team mates "Don't walk, let the umpire make the decision" and in that I agree with him.
No rain is forecast for tomorrow I'm afraid :O:
And I sincerely hope I'm wrong about our ability to score runs.
I don't blame Broad for not walking, but being a local lad, he must be related to Robin Hood.
BTW its bollocks that it was Chappell that started that. You've only got to look at Jardine in 1931 to find the culprit.:O:

Arrggh, so close! Well fought and well done; bring on game two! :arrgh!:
Hats off to Haddin and Anderson. Both great competitors.
Don't mind losing having gotten so close. Shows that the poms are beatable. They certainly will be if we can get some batting starts in the upper order.
Off to Lords on Thursday. Bring it on.:arrgh!:

Sod it:stare: Poms will breath a sigh of relief with Agar gone.
Why?
Surely you weren't expecting two miracles in the same test?
Awesome first session today. Both sides deserve a round of applause for that. Some great bowling and some gritty determined batting. Will be all over next session without doubt.
It sure was but what a great contest...congratulations to both sides in cricketing terms.

I seem to recall exchanging posts with you during said session.
As for the final session I was at my mums for half of it and the remainder I was in the front lounge biting my fingers down to the stumps (orders from SWMBO "No drinking till after tea")

Clarkes stock rating went up for me after his post match interview with Atherton....he accepted DRS was equally fair on both sides and admitted his use of said system was poor at best (2 out of 9 correct).
looking forward to the second test on Thursday and hopefully a not so tense climax.

Aye that. The selection of when to take the new ball and all.
It was a thrilling finish and could have gone either way. Sets up a great battle at Lords and its always good to see the poms getting nervous even if they do win.:O:
I reckon Cowan will get the chop with probably Khawaja coming in at 3 or 4. Not that I think it will make much difference if they don't get a settled start. Hope the entertaining cricket continues as despite the loss, I really enjoyed large parts of this match.

And lets not forget about the boxer :haha:
Looks like Cowan and Starc have gotten the chop for the 2nd test with Khawaja and Ryan Harris coming into the side. Will be interesting to see if Harris's return to the side will see his test form continue. with 47 wickets at 23.63 in 12 tests he can mix it up when he's fit. Agar looks like he's going to bat at No8 again with Harris taking the 11th spot.
No boxer for this game. I understand he's in Zimbabwe playing for Australia A. Whether he returns will depend on the result of this match. Hopefully a win to the Aussies this time around.

I hear the boxer failed in Zimbabwe with two single figure innings :hmm2:
No surprise there. He's another one who can't bat. Still there are 3 more days of this test to go. Plenty of cricket to play and I can console myself with the pommy top order collapsing as badly as our mob. Now to get stuck in to the middle order and limit the damage. Doubt we'll win this one unless we find someone who can bat for more than 10 minutes.

Pretty accurate in my estimation.
If events carry on to the end of the series as they are currently then the truth will be one bad team beat another that was even worse.
AND THAT'S THE TRUTH.
Agreed. Siddle did bowl well in the last session to pick up 3, but by the same token the batsmen got crossed up with their own footwork and waving the bat around poorly.
Ours were even worse.:88) I blame T20 as it does nothing to teach batsmen how to patiently build up a score and avoid silly wickets like some last night.
