But I doubt if I would ever play games on the TV. One thing I like about playing them on the PC (as opposed to a TV/console type setup) is that I can get much closer to the monitor and still be comfortable than I can the TV. Then there's the whole issue of where do I put the keyboard and mouse when that's what I'm using to play the game? I'd have to set up a secondary tabletop just for those and then move them over to that, assuming that I still got a good enough wireless signal on both in the new position.

Wireless Keyboard, Wireless Mouse, Turtle Beach Headphones, and a good comfy chair.

Problem solved.

As indicated I already have all of those, altho the headphones are not that brand. Reread what you quoted - the issue would be where to put the keyboard and mouse so that I could use them properly and comfortably while facing the TV screen. :)

Right, but I'd be playing on the TV in my office, there's no tables like that in there. I'd have to get a small secondary computer desk or other table that is high enough, one I could fold up or roll back out of the way and only bring out when I want to turn around and play something on the TV.

It's not un-doable but I'm just not sure it's worth it unless I put a bigger TV in there. I'll have to see how it all pans out after I get the room painted and start putting up bookcases and other storage units.

Nah, I've got a 27" and that's plenty big. The TV's only a 32" IIRC so it's not like gaming on that would be much different because I'd be sitting several feet further away from it. And TBH reading the text in some of the stuff that comes up on the TV (channel guides and info boxes, stuff crawling across the bottom on various channels) is already problematic at that distance.

If I wanted to game on a TV in here and not have eyestrain issues it would have to be bigger than what I've already got. That's one reason I've never used a TV for gaming or been interested in console systems. There's no way, for instance, that I could be comfortable sitting on a couch 10' or more back from the screen and trying to play a game. Unless the screen was HUGE. :O:

Now if I *did* put a bigger TV in here, a set-up where I could play games on it might be something to consider.

Mine says 28" on the box, but it's actually 27-1/2". I originally thought about getting a 32" TV but rethought it when someone said the resolution was not as good as a dedicated monitor. I've since wondered what a 42" TV would be like on my desk.

I use a standard "USB wired" X Box controller in lieu of keyboard and mouse to play me games on a small Vizio HD TV hooked to a nice ATI grfx card that has an HDMI port.
Running this set up in the 1080P mode does tend to make type look rather small though. But, I can headshot pirates in Farcry with relative ease.

When I was a very small child, and TV was just out of its infancy, we were always told we had to sit a goodly distance from the screen. The two main reasons were either we would go blind or the radiation from the CRT would poison us. Times have changes...

As for big screens, why not do an entire wall?:

Sorry, but... ugh NO. Every time I moved or wanted to get up the thing would shift or have to be shifted. I hate lap desks for that reason. Also I don't want the keyboard right in my lap, that wouldn't be very comfortable IMO. And it doesn't look wide enough to accommodate both my keyboard and allow room for mousing anyway.

Just being curious ... do you keep receipts?

Unless it might be something I need when I do my taxes, or something I bought that I might need to return or that's under warranty, I usually only keep receipts until I balance my records with my bank statements.

How much have you spent on this move?

:hmmm:

A lot. :O:

Actually I had a specific amount set aside before I started looking for a place. After closing I had about $7000 left over, the last of which just paid for a new refrigerator. The bulk of the rest went into the kitchen, office, and bedroom.

With that gone, I'm back to buying what I can afford after monthly expenses are met which is kind of a relief since it means I can't buy myself $1000 worth of new projects to tackle every other week. :haha:

I did tackle the cable management monster this weekend, though. Got some... things to put up under the desk to get cables up off the floor.

http://imageshack.us/a/img51/9871/21j5.jpg

That led to me mounting the UPS/surge protection units up on the wall to keep them of the desk and/or floor, because why not?

http://imageshack.us/a/img580/5039/ssd5.jpg

Not pictured: hours and hours of frustation, sweating, and cursing while hooking everything back up after deciding where it was all gonna go permanently. :O:

Turned out pretty well for now, though.

http://imageshack.us/a/img69/8800/5cus.jpg

I still have cords and cables on the floor directly behind the desk, but I didn't pull it out far enough to do anything about that this time. If/when I paint that wall I'll have to unplug everything again and pull it out in the center of the room so I'll have to think about whether I want to put something on the back of the desk to deal with that issue. I may not push the desk up as close to the wall in the final configuration so something to keep that area tidy might be worthwhile. :hmmm:

So here's the end result so far of what I've been up to the past few days:

http://imageshack.us/a/img534/4457/7s18.jpg

That's the wall on the garage side of the little storage room between the garage and kitchen. The floor in there is really dodgy, by which I mean it's not level on that side at all. Don't know whether that's something I'll be able to remedy when I put new flooring down in there, but I wanted one wall for hanging stuff anyway so I picked the side where it was already tricky to sit any freestanding shelves on the floor. The little metal cart is on wheels that lock and on the most level part of the floor on that side so it's doing fine there for now.

Ordered the broom/mop rack from Amazon yesterday and was surprised that it showed up today since it wasn't due 'til tomorrow, but since I had it I went ahead and finished the job tonight. Already had one of those high shelves up yesterday, the one on the left... tried for the second one but botched it - I poked holes in the wall that turned out to be a little too large for the anchors I had and one of them wasn't holding well at all and I didn't want to risk leaving it that way. Ended up taking it down and patching the holes and when I got home today it had dried white and after a little sanding you really couldn't tell where I'd patched it. I just positioned the shelf a little further to the left and got it right this time.

Of course a couple of the things hanging there need to be plugged in for recharging, which I can't do in that location because I don't have an outlet in there yet... that's gonna be next on the list, I think. Still debating whether I want to try and do it myself. :hmmm:

The currently unused corner on that side will have more wall-mounted shelving, already picked some out from Ikea and made sure to leave enough space for it. Probably will go from where the current shelves are about halfway down to the floor. I need to keep a good portion of the back of the room free down near the floor to leave room for all the stuff that will be needed for the kitties I plan to get in the future, most notably the litter box and probably their food/water bowls as well.

The other side of the wall now looks like this:

http://imageshack.us/a/img841/9263/n4rg.jpg

Not sure about leaving that cabinet back in the corner, I'll have to see how the space plays out once I start preparing for my Someday Kitties. :D But I would like to keep as much closed storage space as possible because of the kitties spending time in there. The white/wood cart in the middle will probably stay where it is - it's actually a kitchen appliance cart that I have no need for in the kitchen, and it got pretty beat up in the move, but it's still a decent addition to the storage room. Up high, maybe more wall-mounted shelving if I think I need it.

The plastic cart of drawers next to it will end up somewhere else, as will the stepladder, because the space beside the door is set aside for a little bench/shoe-rack that I've already picked out. A nice spot to sit down and peel off wet/muddy/snowy footwear when the weather turns in that direction. :yeah:

Last of all, I had a wall-mounted pot rack/rail in the apartment that I have absolutely no use for in the kitchen here - so I cleaned it up and recycled it as a coat rack on the wall between the kitchen and garage doors.

http://imageshack.us/a/img580/7606/2vmn.jpg

Actually I have two of these, and the hooks are movable and removable, so I just put one up and stuck as many hooks on there as I thought would work. Don't know what I'll do with the other rail, it's not in as good a shape, but I might find a use for it in the garage or a closet somewhere.

Before I did all this, of course, I had to clean out the room, which started with climbing up on the ladder in the garage and cleaning off the storage loft in there. Ugh. Lots of dust and debris and cobwebs and not much of interest. Some really old and dirty vertical blinds which must have been in a window here at some point, which all went straight in the trash. A couple lengths of coaxial cable that I might make use of, some extra tiles from one of the upstairs bathrooms which I saved just on principle and also a decent bit of leftover flooring from when the kitchen and hallway were last done, that definitely might come in handy someday. So not much stuff to deal with but an unpleasant job just the same.

Anyhoo once I got the loft cleaned off I was able to start stacking all my empty moving boxes out there, which got them out of the storage room, and boy did it seem a lot larger after that. :haha: Also moved out the three narrow freestanding shelf towers that I had in there - two are in the dining room for now but will likely find a home in one of the spare closets, and the tall one is out in one corner of the garage holding paint and spackle and some tools and other associated bits and pieces that probably belong in the garage anyway.

So... next major project may be continued work on the storage room, getting electricity in there and possibly starting to tear up the floor in the back corners to see what I'm dealing with there. Also I need to order some carpet tiles from somewhere to get them down in the back of the hall closet. I'd also like to make a decision on paint colors for the office and get that taken care of so I can be free to start putting more bookcases in here as the money becomes available, without having to face the prospect of moving them around to paint later on.

Anyway... I have the first week of September off work for vacation so we'll see how many things I can get lined up and ready to go, I'm hoping I can knock out at least a couple of the bigger projects then.

Lol, proof that you don't have to be tidy to be organized. Sometimes everything has its place and is right where it should be, only all the various places are just piles of stuff here and there. Kind of like some areas of my condo at the moment. :haha:

That is actually one of my biggest weaknesses... always the temptation to put something down "right here for now" instead of carrying it back to where it goes. Even if I've made a place for it somewhere else. Do that long enough and eventually nothing is "where it goes" anymore, it's all piled up somewhere else. That's how my kitchen table always ends up with random stuff heaped on it, it was always the most convenient place to drop something I'd couldn't be arsed to deal with or put away at the moment.

GASP! Frau K, say it ain't so. You're not a Felix Unger... are you?

Far from it, I loathe most housework. Which is one reason I like to have a place for everything, it's a lot easier to put things in order when there was some definable order to begin with. Also in a larger space it's easier because you're not constantly fighting with your surroundings just to have room to clean something. That's how it was in my apartment... doing a thorough cleaning of any room generally meant transporting half of what was in it into another location, where it had to be stepped over and worked around until it could be moved back.

And you see that shortish broom/dustpan combo hanging on that broom rack, that looks like the sort of thing a theater usher might have? I actually bought that because using a full size (long handled) broom in my former kitchen and bathroom was virtually impossible due to the fact that no matter which way you turned trying to sweep, the other end of the broom was always banging into a wall or cabinet or door or something. Very frustrating. I might actually get rid of that thing now, or maybe keep it upstairs where the only hard floors are the two bathrooms and it might be handier than carrying one of the other things up from downstairs. :hmmm:

I'm a firm believer in order and logic and the right tools for the task at hand.

A full size broom to gather the dirt and prevent back fatigue. Followed by a whisk broom or a hand brush to sweep it into the dust pan.

Tentative delivery date when I bought it on the 5th was today, since three weeks is the typical turnaround time on a special order of that item. But I hadn't heard anything by the time I got home after work yesterday so I called to check. The fridge hadn't come in yet and even the guys in Appliances were kinda scratching their heads wondering where it was and why it hadn't been on any of the trucks this past week. End result was they told me they'd have to call Samsung to see if it had shipped and couldn't do that until Monday. :/\\!!

I should probably call my brother in law and ask him to look up the order when he goes to work on Monday. He works in Receiving (and would probably be the guy who actually unloads it off the truck when it comes in) and maybe they can access more information from their station. He's already looked up the order once, so I almost expected him to call me when it came in but haven't heard anything from him either.

The hall coat/storage closet... ugh. Just started work on that tonight, after going to Lowe's for something completely different and finding a 48 square foot, dark grey indoor/outdoor area rug for $20 that looked like it would do nicely in there. Which meant I would not have to order and then wait on carpet tile, or hit up the local carpet places looking for usable remnants in the right size.

First job was to get some more light in there, fortunately I had a couple of battery powered tap lights from the apartment and I hung one of those around the corner in the back part of the storage area.

http://imageshack.us/a/img821/6483/snug.jpg

I'll still need my task light to finish the job, but this one (along with the much better light in the front half of the closet) should be good enough when all I'm doing is reaching around to pull something out of the back of there.

The part that is circled in red may be a stroke of good fortune when I get around to running coaxial cable up to the master bedroom for the TV in there... that's the back of the phone jack in the living room. That room would be the split-off point for the upstairs connection. The line from this jack runs up behind the living room wall (and apparently the ductwork as well) towards the second floor, and may run right up to the phone jack in the master bedroom that's located on that wall one floor up. And which is also right in the corner where the TV is in that room.

So I'm hoping this means I can just run a cable line from the bedroom wall right down beside the phone line, and out the other side of the living room wall, and then around that room under the baseboard to where the cable comes in from the outside. :yeah: Once I get the carpet down I can get up under there and try to see up behind the wall, if I can follow the line up with a flashlight I may have a better idea of whether that idea's gonna work.

Anyway... after I got the light up I spent a good amount of time cleaning the whole area out, took a brush and dustpan and then the Dustbuster and then my smaller vacuum cleaner to get it where it wasn't completely disgusting. I'll still have to thoroughly scrub the concrete floor before putting any adhesive down, but at least it's better than it was.

Then it was a matter of measuring and drawing a makeshift template for cutting the carpet.

http://imageshack.us/a/img208/6198/mv0l.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img24/7373/qooy.jpg

The hardest part was remembering to do everything backwards from my template, lol, since I was marking the underside of the rug and it would have to be flipped over when put down in the closet. I made that mistake with some shelf liner for the oddly shaped shelves in the linen closet and had a real "D'oh" moment when I realized what I'd done.

But, no such problems here, as it turned out okay. The front part of the closet:

http://imageshack.us/a/img94/2392/no6u.jpg

And around the corner, where the piece I cut wasn't quite long enough due to the limitations of what I had to work with - but I have enough left over to patch it in all the way to the back of the closet. :woot:

http://imageshack.us/a/img194/6219/5ois.jpg

And that was where I stopped, so I could get a shower because UGH it was dusty and dirty back there, and then have a little dinner. May finish it up this week if I can get it scrubbed and then dry in time and I'm not too tired after work the next couple of nights... if not, probably this weekend.

Oh and I heard from Lowe's on the fridge, they talked to Samsung and it will probably be another three weeks before they get it to the store. Talked to my brother in law over the weekend and according to him the delivery truck that it will come in is now bringing them twice as many appliances in every load than it used to do, so I'm wondering if they are waiting to have a full truck before they send one out in order to save on transportation costs. Whatever. At least they didn't say "oh sorry that model is no longer available, oops our bad" which is what I was afraid I was gonna hear.

Not to one-up you Frau, but we just bought our first home:

~1500 square ft, $195k, big yard for the McBees to roam, place for a boat:cool:, my own bunker.

Met the real estate broker on Sunday, Started receiving e-mails from him of houses that met our specs, looked at a house on wednesday, had a tour of the house on Thursday, made an off on Thursday, offer accepted on Sunday evening.

Should be in there by Sept 15th, barring any surprises.

@McBee: Congrats! Soon we can start sharing and comparing horror stories. :O:

Just finished wiping down the concrete floor in the hall closet, and that's one washrag that will never be used again. :dead: Fortunately I bought some cheap and ultimately disposable terry towels when I was moving in, and still have one left that I know of - that one will most likely get used to go over the floor again once it dries. Got a small fan parked inside the open closet door blowing some air back there to speed the process.

But I don't know if I'll do any more in there tonight, altho it would be nice to get it thoroughly washed so it can be dried and swept up again tomorrow and I can finally get the carpet down and start moving some stuff in there. I'm really tired though.

The BiL called this morning and says the status of my order has been updated, he thinks they will receive it today or tomorrow. If they do I don't know if I'll be able to get it delivered this weekend or not, I don't know how their scheduling works... altho' originally it was scheduled to come in on a Friday and be delivered the following day, so we'll see what happens. I think they may do deliveries on Sunday so perhaps that's a possibility. At this point I'll be happy if they just GET IT IN THE STORE so a delivery can be arranged at some point.

Other things on the To Do list, I need to get some things to stick on the walls in the master BR and living room for the holes to run the new cable line through, and I need to measure the distance involved so I can actually get the cable. :O:

Got a piece of plywood I need to cut to size to make an extra shelf for one of my kitchen cupboards... and also need to put something in the cupboard to hold it up, fortunately I've saved every "shelf peg" from every bookshelf I've ever had and since it's a small shelf that will only need to hold some cups I think I can get buy with four of those. Just need to figure out where the holes for them should go.

Also need to get some paint for the back wall of the office, I've pretty much decided that I'm not going to paint the rest of the walls in there as eventually there will be bookshelves and other storage things pretty much all the way around, so why bother? OTOH there may be some spots that need to be patched and painted over, so I dunno.

Still trying to figure out what to do about getting some power outlets on that kitchen peninsula. :hmmm:

The fridge is in. Sorry for the delay. :03:

I'm old enough to have seen a few of those still in service when I was a small child. In fact, my Irish grandparents, who clung to their ways tenaciously, used to have ice delivered to their home via an outdoor port such as shown below:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v108/rosethornil/Ice%20Box/Icebox_Door.jpg

The iceman would come around to the back with a large block of ice, open the little door as shown below the window in the picture, put the block in a galvanized steel compartment and close the door. Inside the house, there was an "icebox" directly adjacent or, better still, below, the compartment holding the ice. Perishibles were placed in the icebox and kept cold by the proximity of the iceblock. I used to to be awed by the sight of the iceman hauling out thiose big blocks of ice with huge icetongs and then carring them over his shoulder to the icebox...

Because of my grandparents, I was also able to see first hand how cooking and baking used to be done before gas and electricity; they still had a woodburning stove and oven and were easily able to cook almost anything to perfection. When I was a bit older, about 4 or 5, they would put a stool up next to the stove, I would stand on it and assist in starting the fire in the morning and in the cooking of breakfast. I do miss those days. Poptarts may be convenient, but thay lack charm and warmth and really aren't memorable...

Ooh! Ooh! I just noticed! Looks like it's a perfect fit. :sunny:

Lol, the first delivery guy in the door started measuring right away and because it's a 26 cubic ft model he was sure it wasn't a wide enough space, and the whole time I'm saying "it'll fit, it's only 33" wide, trust me, there won't be a problem" and he had to go out on the truck and measure the thing before he was convinced there was enough room. Most fridges with that capacity are a couple inches wider and even Lowe's web site says the most common reason for returns is that there isn't enough room for whatever model the customer ordered.

I mentioned that and said I had measured over and over again just to be sure before I picked something out, and couldn't believe people would buy a major appliance without doing that first - I mean, how hard is it to break out a tape measure before you buy? Both the delivery guys said you would not believe how many times they don't even get something off the truck because they get to a house and measure and there's not enough room for what they're supposed to install. It boggles the mind, I can't imagine spending that kind of money on something without checking and double-checking the available space.

Ice maker doing its thang? How long before the condo looks like Winterhold?

If you mean how long before it looks like there was a major catastrophe of some sort in the not too distant past, it's pretty much there already. :O: I really need to get my butt in gear on finishing projects and putting stuff away.

Don't know about the icemaker, I didn't check for ice last night but everything looked to be down to the desired temperatures before I went to bed. I don't know at what point it actually starts making ice or how long it takes for it to get a full supply done once it starts up. Maybe I'll have some when I get home. I didn't look this morning either.

Guess I could have read the manual last night to see but I didn't, lol. I was saving that for tonight since I need to see how all the touch controls work and I couldn't fiddle with them while it was gearing up for business.

The freezer was set to zero degrees Fahrenheit and the fridge to 34 degrees F, they were both down to that temp when I left this morning... I'm sure the digital readout would've told me but as I haven't read the manual on how it works I put my fridge/freezer thermometers in there overnight so I could just check those. So it should be plenty cold enough to start making ice and probably was by late last night.

I know the water supply is fine cuz I already ran the first gallon through the water dispenser to pour out for line cleaning purposes.

Rgr that...we don't have a dedicated ice maker and use those compartmentalised trays which can be a pain when initially filled with water then spilled enroute to freezer :)

I'm not surprised people don't measure. When I lived in San Francisco, a common complaint of delivery and moving men was not just a failure to measure the place the object was going to occupy, but, also, the doorways or other openings through which an object was to pass. There are an awful lot of old Victorian houses in San Francisco and many of them were built before the standarization of codes, etc. Add to the mix most of these homes are on hills, some of which would cause billy goat to balk, and that the homes entrances are at the top of some very steep stairs and the woes of the delivery man are many. Measuring and remeasuring is wise if only to ensure one will not have to lug some unwieldly object into a space and then have to lug it back because the object will not fit the space intended or the opening through which it must pass...

I only ask because my ice maker has an on/off switch and if it's off, the icemaker will fill with water and freeze it but, won't dump the cubes to make more. Mine took a couple of days to fill the bin enough to get ice from the door.

Yep, they were awesome. Everything works. I've already gotten about three big full tumblers of ice out, which you're supposed to do in the first 24 hours after it finishes cooling down to the proper temp according to the manual. So, done and done. I got ice and cold water, no problems.

Altho I didn't try the crushed ice yet, so I guess I should do that tonight and make sure it works okay too. First though I need to go to the grocery store straight after work so I've actually got some food to put in the thing. :haha:

Do you eat in or do you dine out? Just wondering, not flirting, Kentucky is too far away take you out for dinner.

Do you eat alone in a restaurant? Do you get take out?

What's your favorite take out or your favorite meal to prepare at home?

So nice of y'all to keep the thread going while I was otherwise occupied. :haha:

In answer to Mr. Quatro (if that IS your real name :O:):

I don't go out to eat much unless it's with friends and/or family and due to distance and work schedules and whatnot that's not very often.

I do get takeout, sometimes I go somewhere and pick it up but I prefer to order and pay online and then have it delivered to my door. Local Italian place La Rosa's generally gets the nod in that department, although I'm not a fan of their pizza they do have excellent salads, hoagies and other menu items.

I'm also a fan of dropping by Penn Station - there's one right down the street and I also have a couple very good Chinese places nearby. There are two Thai places very close as well and another Italian place and who knows what else, I haven't tried those yet or completely explored the area for smaller "hole in the wall" local joints that might be good.

Probably (at least I hope this the case) I will be doing more cooking now that I have a reasonably decent kitchen to do it in, with actual counter space (which I had about two square feet of, max, in my apartment). Plus I've got that nice fridge and a pantry cupboard so lots more space to store stuff that I would need and the leftovers when I'm done.

Regarding Skyrim: MY SKYRIM BROKE a week ago, I'd noticed some odd glitches when I bought my first two houses (like not getting the keys, and the game not updating to advance the Thane quests for those holds) but was able to fix them with console commands. Then I bought Hjerim and found that not only did I not get the key or an update for the Thane quest, but also that Jorleif's dialogue options did not advance to include decorating options - it was stuck on the "I'd like to purchase a house" part of the topic and fixing the rest with console commands didn't help.

I mod all the houses and I'd messed around looking at the new scripts installed with Hearthfire to see how that all worked and after going through all the game files I think what happened was that I left a script I was tinkering with in the loose files by accident and then it overwrote the original, and once it ran the home buying stuff was all permanently borked. It's the only explanation I can think of for why EVERY home purchase and associated quests would all break in the same way.

At any rate - to be safe I completely uninstalled and reinstalled everything and started from scratch with regard to house modding, which I really needed to do anyway since I want to use the Realistic Lighting Overhaul Major City Interiors mod as a starting point for any changes to the player homes.

So I was distracted my Skyrim, but sadly not in a happy way. :stare:

I did get a few things done in the condo, altho since I knew I was getting a Lowe's gift card for my b-day I put off buying stuff for projects I might have tackled otherwise.

Solved the issue of how to get some power outlets on the kitchen peninsula. Possibly not the most elegant solution, but it works. It was rather nerve-wracking getting it in place, though.

X marks the spot:

http://imageshack.us/a/img855/1442/o8j5.jpg

Oh, hole saw... is there nothing you can't do?

http://imageshack.us/a/img62/2508/almn.jpg

Well, yes, a lot of things, but it cuts holes in stuff like a word I'm not allowed to say here :O: :

http://imageshack.us/a/img845/8615/fzr4.jpg

And into the hole went this:

http://imageshack.us/a/img689/6623/61bm.jpg

The whole time I was drilling the hole I was terrified that the entire corner of the countertop was just gonna crack off, but it all turned out okay. :yeah: The cord for the thing isn't long enough to reach any available outlet, so I've got it on an extension cord just tucked up under the countertop and and over to the nearest outlet until I figure out what I'm going to do as a permanent solution. But at the very least I can now plop my iced tea maker or food processor or whatever right there on the countertop where it's most convenient to use them. And I can plug my phone in there and recharge it as well, which is nice because if I leave it charging anywhere but the kitchen I inevitably forget about it and walk out the door without it.

I also have all the stuff I need to get some power into the utility room, but once I went looking for the power strip I wanted to use in there I couldn't find what I wanted right away and ended up trekking over to my old neighborhood and getting something at - GASP! - Home Depot. Will try to get that done this week some time.

I know, I know, I felt bad about it. But there are some departments in which our Lowe's is strikingly deficient whereas it turns out Home Depot has a much better in-store selection. Which is odd because, overall, Lowe's is a much bigger store and usually has a far better inventory of stuff in stock. But for things like power strips, extension cords, etc., the nearest Home Depot beats the heck out of them.

I prefer Lowe's and have always had good experiences there (altho I can't say I've had any bad ones at HD) and generally speaking, they are more likely to have whatever I'm looking for with only a few exceptions that I've discovered so far. HD has a much smaller store and keeps far fewer items in stock, except for those few exceptions, where they will sometimes have an entire aisle of options whereas Lowe's will have one or two bins with almost no selection at all. It's just weird.

There is a massive HD near where I live (about 1 mile away) and there are no Lowes less than 4 miles away. There used to be an Orchard Supply Hardware store rught across the street from the HD, but it just recently closed, which is a pity because I very often found in the OSH store many, many items I could not find at HD. Also, on quite a few items, the HD prices were a tad higher than OSH...

<O>

frau kaleun
09-19-13, 09:05 AM
There may be bigger HD stores around here somewhere but the closest one is much, much smaller than the nearest Lowe's store.

We have one Menard's in the area which is HUGE - probably bigger than Lowe's, but nowhere near as close. I went there once back after I first moved in, but only because I had a gift card. If it wasn't in such an out-of-the-way location for me I could totally see shopping there on a regular basis, or at least as a primary Lowe's alternative.

Right now I've got a big Lowe's gift card from my birthday that I haven't used yet at all. I really need to make a list of stuff I need and get over there. I still need to get the stuff to run cable up to the bedroom but I'll have to measure before buying any cable and that means moving a lot of stuff in the living room and I've just been too lazy.

Meanwhile, four out of five vanilla Skyrim player houses now look AWESOME in the CK. :O:

Wow, long time no update. Lest you think I've been a total slacker, I have gotten a few things done that needed doing. For instance - finally got some electrical connections in the utility room for stuff that needs to be plugged in to stay charged up, which is good cuz I'll also need it for the high tech litterbox I'll be getting for my new kitties some time this week (I hope).

http://imageshack.us/a/img203/3492/tc53.jpg

As you can see I also hung my tasklight up in there so it could stay out of the way and be charging up so it's ready whenever I need it. My solution for this job was to find a suitable power strip and the stuff to go on the wall for the cords and then run the cord for the strip through the wall and plug it into the outlet on the other side in the garage.

http://imageshack.us/a/img823/7792/xen9.jpg

I haven't checked but I have my doubts as to whether this arrangement is strictly up to code but I figured it was a better idea than me trying to split lines off that outlet and run them to a self-installed outlet on the other side of the wall. Whatever, it works. :O:

Another job I got completely finished was putting a barrier up between the storage space under my sink and the grubby unfinished abyss next to it where all the lines run over to the dishwasher around the corner. First I found a thin piece of plywood about 24" square at Lowe's, and cut it down to fit in the space - including a notch in the bottom left to accommodate the water line to the dishwasher. Then I painted it white because, well, I had the paint and I knew that if I didn't I'd regret it every time I opened that cupboard and looked at it.

http://imageshack.us/a/img844/3264/xc9s.jpg

(I also painted another piece of wood I wanted to use somewhere else, which you can see down in the bottom right, because I had the paint out so why not. But more on that later.)

Then I had to figure out a way to secure it in place so it was actually useful, without making it too much of a hassle to get back out if necessary. So I found a piece of wood left over from the cheap little coatrack I bought and used part of to make a support for the saggy shelf that I repaired in that base cabinet that one time, hey remember when I did that? That was fun. But anyway... I attached that to the bottom of the base cabinet under the sink as a way to keep the lower part of the divider from getting pushed over too far when I'm rummaging around down there, which could result in stuff falling down into The Abyss which would be bad.

http://imageshack.us/a/img407/7908/q71y.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img203/493/ivp7.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img29/5220/ukyb.jpg

Then I had to figure out how to attach the divider at the top, which is where my bottomless supply of old scavenged bits and bobs of hardware came in handy yet again.

http://imageshack.us/a/img9/5641/x51j.jpg

Attached the adjustable end of whatever those things are to the divider, then screwed the short end up into the framework of the cabinet, then tightened down the screws in the adjustable bit so now the divider is held securely in place.

http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/1012/8wrw.jpg

Yet another on-the-fly "upgrade" cobbled together with some cheap supplies and what I already had laying around, but it'll do. And if it needs to come out for any reason, it's just a matter of taking out the two top screws holding it to the frame and sliding it around to get it out the cupboard door. So, yeah, definitely a workable improvement. :yeah:

At least you can't be accused of being a hoarder when you find uses for the junk you hoard.:03::D:up:

And this is why I almost never throw any hardware away, no matter how odd it looks or what weird shape it happens to be or how unlikely I think it is that I'll EVER find a use for it. Because, eventually, I go looking for something that looks odd and is shaped weird and I don't even know what it's called so I couldn't go into a store and ask for it. But it often turns out that I have something on hand that will do the trick.

So, I mentioned that other board that I painted white.

http://imageshack.us/a/img96/5764/4xfj.jpg

I cut that piece to make an extra shelf in one of my upper kitchen cabinets, so I could "double up" on the smaller glassware and make better use of the available space.

Found a pack of four of these little doohickeys at Lowe's (for once, I didn't have anything like them around, I think I used them all on a previous project) and put them up to hold the new shelf.

http://imageshack.us/a/img844/9818/3h0s.jpg

After a little leveling (those little thingies were nice since on one side you could adjust them and I put that side against the cabinet frame so I could tinker with them to get the shelf level if necessary) I got the shelf into place. Turned out pretty good!

http://imageshack.us/a/img22/105/7qx5.jpg

Now I got all my drinkware in that one cabinet - at least, all that would fit in there anyway. I have a few things that are two tall for any of the shelves but they'll fit in the cupboard over the sink right next door to this one. Got plenty of room up there for mugs as well, or I might move them into the narrow corner cabinet on the other side of the sink. Not sure yet, but at any rate, this particular cabinet is sorted.

Got the litter box all set up back there in the corner as you can see - I figure I'll keep the carrier down on the floor for now so they can use it as a "house" while I'm gone and they're staying in the mudroom. I want to keep them in there when I'm not home until I'm sure they take to the litter box and will use it exclusively even if they have the run of the place.

Lucked out with the litter box as I really wanted it in that corner but wasn't sure if the power cord would reach around to where I could plug it in, but it did with a little to spare. I put a cord channel along the wall to keep it safe and secure. I decided to put it up high like that because I still want a new floor in there eventually and that will mean pulling off that baseboard, and who knows what I'll replace it with. I didn't want to end up having to pull the cord channel off the wall and do it over if it turned out to be down too low when the time comes.

Also got a food/water station and a couple of kitty PlayStations set up, lol. They're still little so it should be enough room to accommodate and amuse them for a bit until I'm ready to let them come and go from there as they please. Got a cat door to put in the door between that room and the kitchen but I don't know how long it will be before I can get it installed. In the meantime I'll just have to keep the door propped open enough for them to get in and out when they're not on Mudroom Lockdown.

And I even put a motion activated path light down on the wall between the doors to the kitchen and garage... so they won't have to eat or poop in the dark should the mood strike them in the middle of the night. BUT I'M NOT GOING TO SPOIL THEM OR ANYTHING. :har:

http://imageshack.us/a/img834/1511/goe5.jpg

Actually it'll probably be handier for me since I won't have to go fumbling for the light switch on the opposite wall every time I go out there from the kitchen to grab something. :yeah:

Only I'm not using the cardboard disposable litter trays, I bought a hard plastic one designed for this particular brand of litter box. Then you just buy the litter (which costs about half as much as buying a pre-filled disposable tray) and change it out when needed. After a couple months, the permanent tray pretty much pays for itself. The drawback is that you *can't* just throw it out, it will have to be cleaned periodically, but so would a standard litter box. And a disposable tray couldn't just be cleaned and put back in, it would just have to be thrown out every time even if most of the litter in it was still okay.

I'm supposed to go pick them up tomorrow after lunchtime. Yay!

Uh...which one's which? :88)

I'll give you a hint: what color is a carrot, usually? :O:

Ooh, checkin' out the litter box together! And the window!

Sam is the more curious one... well, the more daring one anyway. He explores more and then, eventually, Carrot follows to see where he went. Usually.

When I first opened the carrier Sam came right out and started looking around. It took Carrot a while. Sammie went right out into the kitchen by himself, and after I took that picture of him by himself in there I turned around and Carrot had basically said "screw this" and was back in the carrier.

Beyond venturing into the kitchen neither one seems interested in exploring on his own at this point, unless I lure them with a toy of some kind. I had to carry them into the office to get them to stay in there where I could keep an eye on them. There was much hiding under the desk and behind boxes before they discovered the open window... and then I couldn't get Carrot out of it. The funniest part was when he did climb down for a bit I closed the window because it was starting to get a little chilly... then I was sitting here and heard a thump and looked over and he was trying to jump back up in the window and couldn't quite grasp the fact that it was now closed. He just keep jumping up and bouncing back off the glass. Took him about four tries before he figured it out. :rotfl2:

After a couple hours they were both sacked out under my desk again so I took them back to the mudroom and now they're both sound asleep in the carrier again.

As far as I can tell neither has officially "used" the litter box yet, although they've both been in it several times scratching around so here's hoping they've figured out what it's for when the time comes. The first time the automatic rake cycle started they both took off running but it just ran again when I was in there and they didn't even blink so that's good.

They've hardly touched their food and water, but it's been a big day and they were both eating right before I brought them home. I'll have to see what they do overnight.

Oh, I've already got a laser pointer. They love it.

And Carrot's a "he," they're both male. We had some good bonding moments last night and this morning so I think in time he'll be less skittish in general.

Gave them the run of the place when I got home yesterday which resulted in several hours of nonstop entertainment. They are going back to the mudroom when they need to go potty, altho I think sometimes they lose track of where they are in the new space and need a little nudge to find their way back. But they seem to know to go find the litter box instead of just letting loose anywhere.

Lol found out last night that Carrot likes Top Gear, at least when they're showing someone doing a lap around the track. It was on the TV in the office where we were all playing and when they showed a car doing a lap he would catch sight of it and sit right in front of the TV and get real still and watch with that intensity cats have when they're fascinated by something and trying to figure out how and when to pounce on it.

Aaaaand they both discovered the stairs last night, of course this happened right when I was getting ready to put them back in the mudroom and go to bed. I'm walking around trying to find them and can't figure out where they are and I look up the stairs and there's Sam sitting at the top and it turned out Carrot was already in the bedroom snooping around. Good thing I closed up all the other rooms just in case.

This morning I let them in again and the first thing they did was run right up the stairs into the bedroom. Probably only a matter of time before I lose dibs on the bed. :O:

Congrats on the new additions. :yeah:

We aquired a 6 year old cat called Holly a couple of weeks ago from a friend, she moved house a year ago and since then Holly had been a bit nasty to the other cats in the house so after a long thinking process she asked for a good home. The first couple of days she wouldn't come out from behind the sofa but after that she's got braver as the days go on. She's asleep under out bed most of the day and comes alive at night - blooming tinkly bell and conkers on the wooden floor outside our bedroom (new carpet coming after the kitchen's been done). My little girl loves her to bits, Holly tolerates my little girl.

Tell me about it, I almost got little collars with bells on for the kittens but didn't. Now I wish I had because they can get themselves into the smallest, darkest spaces imaginable and if they don't want to be found it's very hard to locate them. I may go pick up a couple tonight and maybe a scratching post of some kind as well since they need one. So far they are just using the little throw rugs I've got scattered around which is fine, since those were left by the previous owner and I'd replace them eventually anyway. But it's only a matter of time before they start going to town on other things.

I've also realized that buying extra long sheer curtains so they would "pool" on the floor under the bedroom window was probably NOT the best idea, lol. The kittens, on the other hand, probably think it was the BEST IDEA EVER. :haha:

:har: Yeah, kittens will probably go for it, Holly's prolly past that stage. I hope.

She did cause me a bit of bother though, when she first arrived and finally came out from behind the sofa she disappeared - the only place I could imagine was down a small hole under the bath (panel was off after the flood). I could've swore I heard her bell in the walls and imagined needing a big hammer to get her out. Turns out she did go down that hole but used the inbetween space to go into our 'cupboard of death' - a long dark cupboard that runs along the lenght of our bedroom with a tiny door at one end, and surprisingly enough, a hole at the other in the floor. After numerous disappearing acts we also had a small hole appear in the ceiling of the porch - right underneath the hold in the bathroom floor! :/\\!!

:haha:

Audible collars and scratching posts are an early life must for the little buggas (one of our neighbours down the way has had cats for years and her living room looks like a cats obstacle course) :)

Now our little Louie on the other hand, thinks he's a goat....always eating the lawn and bringing in leaves

LOL she'll *never* find us in here.

So this is their new favorite thing in the office - there's one hole on each side of these crates juuuuuust big enough for them to squeeze through. So they do, over and over again. Sometimes they go in one side and right out the other instead of just walking around the thing.

STAIRS OMG STAIRS!!!!!

I can barely get any pictures of them any more that aren't all blurry, they're almost never still long enough unless they're at least half asleep.

No, man, I'm serious. Top of the stairs, take a left... it's the BIGGEST CAT BED I'VE EVER SEEN. All I need is a leg up, and then I'll pull you up once I make sure Teh Hyooman's not already in it.

Frau, try a faster shutter speed. Unless you are using a cell phone camera.

I think HB's new kitty has already made her own. :haha:

Yeah, it's a cell phone camera and that's the only camera I've got so I just have to make do.

Awwwwwww!

I KNOW! I say that about every five minutes. Followed shortly thereafter by "okay, now where did you go? wait - what - NO DON'T GO UNDER THERE!" :O:

At least your place is interesting. If I had cats here they'd go stir-crazy. Four semi-small rooms and no interesting vents at all! :dead:

I suspect you of being a prime candidate for a kitteh mauling.

Those are extra.:/\\k:
