Nicknamed “The Devil Boat” and “Devilfish” because of her hull number, the USS Hawkbill was a Sturgeon-class attack submarine built for the U.S. Navy in the mid-1960s. She was the second Navy ship named for the hawksbill, a now-critically endangered sea turtle. The turtle’s name was inadvertently misspelled in the naming of the first ship – the World War II-era submarine USS Hawkbill (SS-366) – and the name of the second ship kept the erroneously spelled name.
Don't touch it Aktungbby ... just kidding :D

^The answer to Royal Sovereign class Predreadnoughts: HMS REVENGE later renamed: HMS REDOUBTABLE: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/3c/HMSRevenge1897.jpg/1024px-HMSRevenge1897.jpgThe only one of her class to actually fire at Germans on the WWI Belgian coast; She had been refitted with 'torpedo bulges' in 1915 following two 8' damage hits in 1914...the first ship to be fitted with them operationally!:Kaleun_Salute: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/08/RevengeBombarding1915.jpg/220px-RevengeBombarding1915.jpg (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:RevengeBombarding1915.jpg)<Redoubtable bombarding the Flemish coast (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flanders) in 1915. She has a deliberately induced list (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_(watercraft)) to increase the range of her guns. On 7 September 1915, she returned to combat, joining the gunboats Bustard and Excellent (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Excellent) in bombarding German barracks and gun positions at Westende (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westende), inflicting much damage on the Germans. One of her anti-torpedo bulges was deliberately flooded to give her a list (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_(watercraft)) that would increase the range of her guns. (now that's an "operational" bulge BBY:timeout:) The ship was hit by a pair of 6-inch (152-mm) shells during the action. Redoubtable underwent another refit from October to December 1915 but was not re-commisioned. (Old West lingo: Got the bulge ~ have the advantage. "We'll get the bulge on him, and take his gun away.")

The Minnesota, the 10th Virginia-class attack boat, was delivered 11 months ahead of schedule. But it has been in the shipyards at Electric Boat in Groton, Connecticut for two years — more than twice as long as a normal post-shakedown availability. It still has months to go. The plankowner crew has spent only a handful of days at sea since joining the fleet and experts say they're likely to forfeit their whole deployment cycle, forcing fleet bosses to make tough decisions about whether to extend deployments or withhold forces from missions overseas.
News of the lousy parts first emerged in August, a month after the Minnesota was to have finished its overhaul. Since then, a Justice Department-led investigation is examining the quality control issues that led the shoddy part to be installed in the $2.7-billion sub.
The same shoddy elbow joints were installed aboard attack subs North Dakota and John Warner, forcing the Navy to spend millions of dollars and many more months to repair them. If these pipes ruptured, they would leak steam and force the submarine to take emergency measures that would impair its combat effectiveness. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/44/USS_Minnesota_SSN_783.png

HMS CANOPUS https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b3/HMS_Canopus_news_mimic.jpgQuite the performer in the great war incl. firing the two opening rounds of the Battle of the Falklands...one a decisive dud!
Stanley, Canopus's crew set up defences against an attack by Graf Spee. Canopus herself was beached in the mudflats in a position that allowed her to cover the entrance to the harbour and have a field of fire landward to the southeast; to reduce her visibility, her topmasts (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topmast) were struck and she was camouflaged. An observation post was established ashore on high ground and connected to the ship by telephone, allowing Canopus to use indirect fire (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indirect_fire) against approaching ships. Some of her 12-pounder guns and a detachment of 70 Royal Marines (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Marines) were put ashore to defend Stanley and its environs. All was quiet until welcome reinforcements arrived at Stanley on 7 December 1914 in the form of the battlecruiser (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlecruiser) squadron of Vice-Admiral Sir Frederick Doveton Sturdee (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doveton_Sturdee). Early the next morning, 8 December 1914 Canopus's observation post ashore spotted smoke on the horizon and soon identified the approaching ships as von Spee's squadron. Canopus opened indirect fire, firing the first shots of the Battle of the Falklands (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_the_Falklands) at the extreme range of 12,000 yards (11,000 m). Although von Spee was beyond the range of her guns she did succeed in hitting the after funnel of the armoured cruiser (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armoured_cruiser)SMS Gneisenau (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMS_Gneisenau) with a 12-inch shell that ricocheted off the water -a result which the Greenwich museum attributes to an inert practice shell left in the rear turret. :yeah: The Germans were surprised by gunfire from an unexpected source:HMS Canopus (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Canopus_(1897)), which had been grounded as a guardship and was behind a hill. This was enough to check the Germans' advance. Under fire from Canopus and spotting the tophampers of Sturdee's battlecruisers, von Spee called off his force's planned attack on the Falklands' radio and coaling stations and ran, allowing Sturdee's force to raise steam and pursue the German force. Sturdee gave chase and destroyed von Spee's squadron by the end of the day, but Canopus remained behind at Stanley because of her low speed and missed the rest of the battle...her work well done!

SILC they are about twice as large, and much more stealthy. Unlike the later North Korean I-SILC they are not fully submersible.

TRAFLÜGELBOOT VS-8 http://www.foils.org/vs6.jpg http://www.german-navy.de/pics/kriegsmarine/vs8.gif
Germany experimented with various hydrofoil designs since the late 1938, most of them being design studies for fast attack craft. One remarkable exception was the Fast Hydrofoil Transport VS8... 80 tons able to transport one small or medium tank, (Type 38T or IV) which was stored on a special designed pontoon in the back of the ship, the VS8 was build as a prototype for experimenting with this kind of transport method. To load or unload the tank, the bay in the back of the ship was flooded and the pontoon, equipped with two 40 hp engines, could be removed or loaded on the ship. Experiments showed that loading the pontoon took less then two minutes, unloading less than one.
Besides its task as a fast transport, it was also discussed to use the ship as a fast mine layer, capable of laying 15-20 mines.
Designed to resupply Rommel with tanks in North Africa, it was under-powered and couldn't 'fly' in moderate seas. http://strangevehicles.greyfalcon.us/picturesm/tb11.jpg

Despite radar (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radar) detection and cuing, airborne interception, attrition, and massive anti-aircraft barrages, 14 percent of Kamikazes survived to score a hit on a ship; nearly 8.5 percent of all ships hit by Kamikazes sank.Australian journalists Denis and Peggy Warner, in a 1982 book with Japanese naval historian Sadao Seno (The Sacred Warriors: Japan’s Suicide Legions), arrived at a total of 57 ships sunk by kamikazes. Bill Gordon, an American Japanologist (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_Studies) who specialises in kamikazes, lists in a 2007 article 47 ships known to have been sunk by kamikaze aircraft. Gordon says that the Warners and Seno included ten ships that did not sink. He lists:
three escort carriers: USS St. Lo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_St._Lo_(CVE-63)), USS Ommaney Bay (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Ommaney_Bay_(CVE-79)), and USS Bismarck Sea (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Bismarck_Sea_(CVE-95))

two Landing Craft Support (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landing_Craft_Support)....In the immediate aftermath of kamikaze strikes, British carriers with their armoured flight decks recovered more quickly compared to their US counterparts (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_armoured_to_unarmoured_flight_deck_d esigns#Post_war_analysis). Post-war analysis showed that some British carriers such as HMS Formidable suffered structural damage that led to them being scrapped, as being beyond economic repair. Britain's post-war economic situation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_history_of_the_United_Kingdom#1945.E2.80. 931959:_the_post-War_era) played a role in the decision to not repair damaged carriers, while even seriously damaged American carriers such as USS Bunker Hill were repaired, although they were then mothballed or sold off as surplus after World War II without re-entering service.

TBF Avenger Gunner Loyce Edward Deen is buried at sea in his plane - 5 Nov. 1944
The final and one of the most dramatic WWII scene captured on film, showed a sailor buried at sea in the plane in which he gave his life. The plane was so badly hit by 40mm anti-aircraft (AA) shells, the Navy decided to leave his body in the plane. In addition, orders also came down not to strip the plane for parts - which was quite an extraordinary tribute at the time since aircraft parts were scarce and in demand. He is the only known USN sailor to be purposely buried with his plane. The documentary did not mention the sailor's name nor the carrier. Except for his name on a few website photos, very little was written about him - until now. http://www.loyceedeen.org/ (http://www.loyceedeen.org/)

This painting by Robert Taylor gives an impression of the sizeable fleet assembled by the British. The Argentine timing was terrible as the British had already sold its remaining Aircraft Carriers but had not yet delivered them to their purchasers. It is difficult to see how the British could have achieved the retaking of the islands without the support provided from the Aircraft Carriers.

This painting by Joe Beetham illustrates the fact that the Argentines had surrendered before the British had reached Stanley itself. Therefore, there was to be no street fighting and it was a fairly straightforward advance into the port itself.

Which, in turn, inspired ADM Yamamoto's 'infamous' emulation of a surprise attack 'awakening a sleeping giant'...: http://www.brainerddispatch.com/sites/default/files/styles/16x9_860/public/fieldimages/42/1206/0b5w8dpkrotkx2xrn0tfvha3wnm.jpg?itok=1OLovbzt
@ Eichhörnchen :D: Fresh out of school at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design,:yeah: artist Ron Finger lived in the Twin Cities when he was tasked with depicting Fuchida's bombing run on Pearl Harbor's Battleship Row.... http://www.brainerddispatch.com/news/4174444-painting-day-infamy-baxter-illustrator-recalls-creating-pearl-harbor-artwork (http://www.brainerddispatch.com/news/4174444-painting-day-infamy-baxter-illustrator-recalls-creating-pearl-harbor-artwork)
And; an interesting perspective from the other side: http://www.nytimes.com/1981/12/07/world/40-years-later-japanese-pilot-recalls-pearl-harbora.html (http://www.nytimes.com/1981/12/07/world/40-years-later-japanese-pilot-recalls-pearl-harbora.html) From his vantage point, Lieutenant Shiga watched the torpedo bombers ''flying very slowly'' far below. They made only 130 knots, moved lower and headed into attack on the moored battleships, ''very slowly.'' He was sure of a perfect surprise attack. Dive bombers launched a concurrent assault on Hickam Field and the torpedo bombers released their weapons. ''The torpedoes also ran very slowly,'' he recalled. ''We could see them running in the water at 30 to 40 knots.''
A total of 2,403 Americans died in the assault. Eighteen ships were lost, including four out of eight battleships. Fifty-four Japanese died. American Firepower... 'Frightening'
''I had already experienced fire from the ground in southern China,'' said Mr. Shiga, who was a fighter ace. ''Compared with the Chinese fire, the American firepower was enormous. The clouds and fire-puffs in the sky looked like a basket of flowers. It was really frightening.'' https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/33/45/34/334534e17b40ca8ec09408b678913b79.jpg

HMS Campbeltown in dry dock, at St Nazaire March 28 1942...just prior to 'high noon' when she blew up.https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/ca/Bundesarchiv_Bild_101II-MW-3722-22%2C_St._Nazaire%2C_Zerst%C3%B6rer_%27HMS_Campbel town%27.jpgThe charges in Campbeltown exploded at noon, an hour and a half later than the British had expected (Operation Chariot). Although the ship had been searched by the Germans, the explosives had not been detected. The explosion killed around 250 German soldiers and French civilians, and demolished both the front half of the destroyer and the 160 short tons (150 t) caisson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caisson_(engineering)) of the drydock, with the rush of water into the drydock washing the remains of the ship into it. The St. Nazaire drydock (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drydock) was rendered unusable for the rest of the war, it was the only German-held drydock on the European coast of the Atlantic that was large enough to service the battleship. If this drydock could be put out of action, any offensive sortie by Tirpitz into the Atlantic would be much more dangerous for the Kriegsmarine (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kriegsmarine) to carry out, making it less likely that they would risk deploying her. The lock was not repaired until 1947. Note: those in the fotos did not survive

About $10 million need to restore America's greatest flagship....“You may fire when ready, Gridley.”... and the rest is 'miserable' 20th century history!:shucks: In December, theTreaty of Paris (http://www.history.com/topics/american-revolution/treaty-of-paris) officially ended the brief Spanish-American War. The once-proud Spanish empire was virtually dissolved, and the United States gained its first overseas empire. Puerto Rico and Guam were ceded to America, the Philippines were bought for $20 million, and Cuba became a U.S. protectorate. Philippine insurgents who fought against Spanish rule during the war immediately turned their guns against the new occupiers, and a significantly greater number of American troops died suppressing the Philippines than in defeating Spain. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/de/USS_Olympia_NH_NH_85768-KN.jpghttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Manila_Bay (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Manila_Bay)
