If they could build and lift a submarine of this size in a shipyard in WWII then why can't we build diesel electric boats today in 2014 and carry them around on modern submarine tenders with the crews ready to board them at a moments notice like they do aircraft on carriers?
Retrieving them might be a little tricky, but we could at least refuel them and resupply them for their long journey home.
I would call them twin nasties :o

Great pic Fenix! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Birmingham_(CL-2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Birmingham_(CL-2)) The cruiser USS Birmingham left the yard on 2 February 1914, and resumed operations with the Atlantic Fleet as flagship of the Torpedo Flotilla. From 22 April – 25 May, she operated with the fleet in Mexican waters. During this time, one of her two Curtiss Model F (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curtiss_Model_F)flying boats (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_boat) performed the first military mission by a US heavier-than-air aircraft, while scouting for mines off Veracruz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veracruz) on 25 April. In 1916, she became flagship of Destroyer Force Atlantic Fleet, and Torpedo Flotilla 3.http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a9/USSBirminghamCL2.jpg/300px-USSBirminghamCL2.jpg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:USSBirminghamCL2.jpg) Apparently the wooden deck for the 1910 launch only covered the foredeck...a very short roll for a very brave pilot, Ely, on the cutting edge! Move over Doolittle! In October, Ely and Curtiss met Captain Washington Chambers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Chambers), USN, who had been appointed by George von Lengerke Meyer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_von_Lengerke_Meyer), the Secretary of the Navy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Secretary_of_the_Navy), to investigate military uses for aviation within the Navy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naval_aviation). This led to two experiments. On November 14, 1910, Ely took off in a Curtiss pusher (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pusher_configuration) from a temporary platform erected over the bow of the light cruiser (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_cruiser)USS Birmingham (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Birmingham_(CL-2)).The aeroplane plunged downward as soon as it cleared the 83-foot platform runway; and the aircraft wheels dipped into the water before rising. Ely's goggles were covered with spray, and the aviator promptly landed on a beach rather than circling the harbor and landing at the Norfolk Navy Yard as planned. John Barry Ryan (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=John_Barry_Ryan&action=edit&redlink=1) offered $500 to build the platform, and a $500 prize, for a ship to shore flight.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9e/USS_Pennsylvania_-_First_airplane_landing.jpg/250px-USS_Pennsylvania_-_First_airplane_landing.jpg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:USS_Pennsylvania_-_First_airplane_landing.jpg) http://images-partners.google.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS18IIJNu4ECnSw60gO5iLw_VY3gVnII OF6a6ZSHotOG0C9R8LqJhdUF81l:http://www.nasm.si.edu/webimages/640/NH77579_640.jpg (http://blog.nasm.si.edu/aviation/eugene-ely-and-the-birth-of-naval-aviation%E2%80%94january-18-1911/)
First fixed-wing aircraft landing on a warship: Ely landing his plane on board the USS Pennsylvania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Pennsylvania_(ACR-4)) in San Francisco Bay, 18 January 1911.
Two months later, on January 18, 1911, Ely landed his Curtiss pusher airplane on a platform on the armored cruiser (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armored_cruiser)USS Pennsylvania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Pennsylvania_(ACR-4)) anchored in San Francisco Bay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco_Bay). Ely flew from the Tanforan airfield in San Bruno, California (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Bruno,_California) and landed on the Pennsylvania, which was the first successful shipboard landing of an aircraft. This flight was also the first ever using a tailhook (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tailhook) system, designed and built by circus performer and aviator Hugh Robinson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugh_Armstrong_Robinson). Ely told a reporter: "It was easy enough. I think the trick could be successfully turned nine times out of ten."
Ely communicated with the United States Navy requesting employment, but United States naval aviation was not yet organized. Ely continued flying in exhibitions while Captain Chambers promised to "keep him in mind" if Navy flying stations were created. Captain Chambers advised Ely to cut out the sensational features for his safety and the sake of aviation. When asked about retiring, The Des Moines Register quoted Ely as replying: "I guess I will be like the rest of them, keep at it until I am killed."
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/24/1911_Curtiss-Ely_Pusher_Replica_2.jpg/220px-1911_Curtiss-Ely_Pusher_Replica_2.jpg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1911_Curtiss-Ely_Pusher_Replica_2.jpg)http://bits.wikimedia.org/static-1.23wmf18/skins/common/images/magnify-clip.png (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1911_Curtiss-Ely_Pusher_Replica_2.jpg)
Curtiss-Ely Pusher replica in flight in 2011
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the flight, Naval Commander Bob Coolbaugh flew a personally built replica of the Ely Curtiss from the runway at NAS Norfolk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NAS_Norfolk) on November 12, 2010. The U.S. Navy plans to feature the flying demonstration at Naval anniversary events across America.http://www.earlyaviators.com/ely05.jpg<And so he was 9 months later...Oct 19 1911 at Macon Georgia. I'm amazed carrier landings and take offs aren't called 'doing an Ely'; he and USS Birmingham were # 1...

I was always fascinated by this idea. I still think that with some development, this could have been a workable design for commerce raiding.
This gun was only used in an all back full emergency :woot:

That´s it. Personal transfer finished. The sub ends below the small white tube behind the tower. It´s mounted there to show the end when leaving and arriving port.

The fore end of the living room with view to the fore end of the pressure hull. I stood between the torpedo tubes. One of them is shown in the upper right corner. Near the tubes we stored juice, milk and cheese. Outside the fridge it was the coolest place inside the sub.
https://www.mediafire.com/convkey/fcb8/g0k2fcfamv2pme94g.jpg (http://www.mediafire.com/view/g0k2fcfamv2pme9/Living04.jpg)
Sitting in the fore right edge of the living room. Behind me you can see 3 of the torpedo tubes. The 4. is behind the orange suits. They are used in heavy seas by the bridgecrew.
https://www.mediafire.com/convkey/f72d/1cr699uuqoso4ke4g.jpg (http://www.mediafire.com/view/1cr699uuqoso4ke/Living05.jpg)
View between pressure hull and tube VI. The grey small tubes are bolds. We used them to show our position when submerged. They are like a signal pistol that can be used submerged.
https://www.mediafire.com/convkey/7d99/ja65z410t3hxgew4g.jpg (http://www.mediafire.com/view/ja65z410t3hxgew/Living06.jpg)

The bigger one of my storage compartments. The second one has half the size. The two red bags are for the ANA (Atemnotluftanlage/emergency breath system). Inside are diving glasses and diving regulator. The regulator can be pluged in the pressureline in the middle.
https://www.mediafire.com/convkey/75cf/79tau04asa80dki4g.jpg (http://www.mediafire.com/view/79tau04asa80dki/Steering.jpg)

Update: Livingrooms are done. Parts of operation center are inside.
Update 2: Engines, prop, shaft and technical center are inside.
The first impressions of an 3D-model of an 206a submarine. If someone is interested, i will post a link to the cad-files (http://www.mediafire.com/download/q8rhgi21nydxjz1/Drawings_206a.7z). But the files are not exactly like blueprints. All details are made from pictures and memories.

Yes that was a tragedy. They lost the energy system while diving with heavy flooding. Very bad situation. But as a result the following subs got better systems and were safer.
