The Empire of Japan has just attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. Can you rebuild the mighty United States Pacific Fleet and win back the Pacific from the expansionist Japanese Empire?

Pacific Fleet is a fast-paced game set upon a detailed simulation depicting naval warfare between the United States and Imperial Japan during World War II.

Features:
- Retina graphics depict the greatest war at sea in stunning full 3D
- Historically based ships, aircraft, weapons and dozens of ship upgrades
- A unique blend of deep strategic planning combined with quick tactical decisions
- 45 combat zones to shell, bomb and torpedo on your way to Japan and victory
- Complete 30 achievements including 12 historical battles
- Sink ships with realistic buoyancy physics, not with hit-point bars!
- Submarine warfare and carrier operations with bombers and torpedo bombers
- Dynamic weather, shore bombardments and night engagements
- Target specific ship subsystems to sink or cripple the enemy
- 7 playable ships (submarine, destroyer, light cruiser, escort carrier, heavy cruiser, battleship, aircraft carrier)
- Random ship placement, wind, weather and night engagements make each play-through unique

:ping:Coming August/September 2012 to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Looks nice, considering the hardware. I wonder if we can navigate the ships in the 3d world as all the screenshots and pics show only seem to show gunnery options. Also the "next" button which keeps appearing perhaps indicates the 3d sequences are turn based?

Just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself as the author of Pacific Fleet.

I wonder if we can navigate the ships in the 3d world as all the screenshots and pics show only seem to show gunnery options. Also the "next" button which keeps appearing perhaps indicates the 3d sequences are turn based?

Ship navigation has been simplified to allow them to move "closer to", or "further away" from the enemy. This allows the player/enemy to move out of bracketing fire, close in to gun/torpedo range or retreat if severely damaged.

As you have correctly observed the game is turn based. The player takes a turn and then each enemy ship takes a turn. Each combat zone is restricted to 6 turns (8 with bonus airstrikes if you purchase both carriers) so players will need to plan on how to inflict the most damage with the ship/resources at hand.

Pacific Fleet is built upon a full simulation and this "action" version is the first iteration. Given enough interest in the game the plan is to extend it to include full 3D navigation of vessels, individual guns on target, more ships and flesh it out into a full simulation with navigation on the Pacific Ocean map.

Thanks Sonarman. Although I have to admit I have been a lurker on these forums for many years, since the release of Silent Hunter III back in 2005 in fact :yep:

Silent Hunter III and the "Natural Sinking Mechanics" mod were a huge inspiration for Pacific Fleet and I've been an avid fan of many of the full realism mods as well. That extra level of detail seems to be lacking in many games these days...

For anyone interested there is a detailed description of the ballistics and buoyancy physics on the Pacific Fleet developer's page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Pacific-Fleet/313315455431274). Note that there are indicators to provide a visual queue on the amount of damage and/or flooding a ship has sustained, but the actual sinking or capsizing of a vessel is all based on buoyancy physics.

I have a large collection of PC naval games dating back to DOS, Windows 95 and XP and the recent Windows 7. There isn't much lately in PC naval games other than online games. Is this PACIFIC FLEET game going to be available as a PC game?? The trailer looks good. I'd like to add it my naval collection. Reminds me of the old TASK FORCE 1942 and DESTROYER COMMAND. THANKS!!

Is this PACIFIC FLEET game going to be available as a PC game??

Good question. Pacific Fleet has been developed using the Unity Engine so it can be ported to PC, Mac, iOS, Android etc. Right now I've focused on iOS and if it generates enough interest a release via Steam for PC would certainly be possible at some point in future.

Just finished the last round of testing. Everything looks solid, found a few cosmetic bugs and tweaked the damage model a little more.

The goal is to get it right and make a great impression with the first players to set out to sea with it.

Hope to have it submitted by end of day tomorrow. Once released I'll be very grateful for any feedback from the SUBSIM community as you folks are the most experienced naval warfare gamers out there. :salute:

We received feedback from Apple last night with 2 trivial changes needed.
1) Fixed a bug with iPad support
2) Removed flags from Pacific map and ship info panels

Changes are made and the revised version is already back to them and waiting review.

What is the reason for that request? I think I remember some weird rules not to use real life persons or countries in games… but it is two years ago that I've actually really checked the App Store rules.

Killerfish Games
09-12-12, 11:39 AM
Regarding the flags; they were deemed to be in violation of section 15.3 of the current App Store Review guidelines. I'm not sure if the guidelines are public information; thus will leave it to you to look it up.

Some interesting press on Pacific Fleet. The crux of the issue does not appear to be that flags of a nation are featured within the game; but the inconsistency with which some games featuring flags are approved while others are not.

I wish you luck with your game and hope you see some success. You have more guts taking a chance with Apple than I do.

That being said...

That is why I will never ever support Apple in any manner. For them to tell a developer what he can and cannot code, how they can and cannot write their software and what they can and cannot include or put into their software.... no way will I ever cater to any company that forces me to do such things..

It is nothing more than censorship and direct control of the entire market.

Paul,

I just purchased and downloaded this Pacific Fleet game to my Ipod Touch. When I try to start the game, an opening screen comes on that states "Powered by Unity Loading...". After about fifteen seconds of this screen being on, I hear about a second of intro music come on and then the game closes the intro screen and boots me back to my Ipod menu screen. Please check this out since something is wrong with your game and it will not even start! This is the first game that I purchased for my Ipod Touch which did not work!

I hope you can identify and fix this problem before more people purchase this game. I am really excited about this game and hope this problem can be solved soon.

Best regards.

Try to close all open apps and restart the device. If an app consumes more than 50% of the available RAM it might be killed by the system.

EDIT: Tested on 3GS & iPad 1 (both have only 256mb RAM) during the splashscreen it reaches 145mb and gets killed:

http://www.hessburg.com/pictures/ZZ0A4A894A.jpg

You could possibly quickly fix this by adding an almost empty loading scene (2nd splashscreen for example) as first level which loads the main game. Springboard sometimes kills apps that needs to much time to load. But the problem could be possibly that it is just using to much RAM at all for 256mb devices.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Everything on my Ipod Touch is closed and I'm still not able to get this game to start. I noticed on another forum that someone with an Ipad is also having the exact same problem that I am.

Hopefully the game designer will be able to see this post soon and look into the problem.

Thanks for the bug reports folks. Looking into it :hmmm:

During testing the game was able to run on the following hardware:
iphone 3GS - 4.0.2
iphone 4 - 4.3.1
iphone 4 - 5.1.1
ipad (3rd gen) - 5.1.1
ipod touch 8GB - 4.2.1 (some textures not displayed due to armv7 requirement, but ran fine on armv6 builds)

Memory management looks like the primary target as has been suggested.
Could folks with issues please post the iOS version for their hardware.

ipod touch 32gb 4g v5.1.1 9b206 -- crashes after "powered by unity" loading sequence

also tried on my daughter's 3g ipod touch running same version 5.1.1 software --also crashing.

I think you are right, that it is memory management as the crashing point is variable... sometimes after the black loading screen, sometimes at the title screen and sometimes in the first few minutes in the 3d world.

I think I've found the issue!
Looks like there were a few bugs with audio compression resulting in native (i.e. big) files going into the final build. The music score was added after testing on the 3GS was done which would explain why its now crashing on 256MB hardware.

Testing the build now and will have it back to Apple within a few hours if all goes well. Unfortunately I don't have 256MB hardware to verify the fix actually works... but I'm feeling lucky.

Pacific Fleet is in rough seas and taking a pounding from 1 star reviews due to the crash on load bug for iPad 1st gen, 3GS and iPod Touch users. Despite fixing the bug, we've still got 10-12 days to weather the storm while Apple reviews the update.

Negative reviews are significantly damaging the adoption of the game by players and these next few days may ultimately determine whether the project is able to continue.

For those whom the game works and would like to see the game/series continue I'd encourage you to write reviews on iTunes and post on forums. We need to set the record straight about game and that development is active and working hard at making a great game. (for more info/forum links see the Developer's Page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Pacific-Fleet/313315455431274))

For those whom the game currently does not work, I share your frustration as is infuriating to be unable to roll out the fix immediately for you. It is certainly your prerogative to review the game as you see fit but I ask you to take pause and consider whether a temporary bug warrants the potential cessation of the entire project.

The Loose Lips Sinks Devs campaign was inspired by the following review on iTunes (US).

Lets get real *****

by Jmac006 - Version 1.0 - Sep 22, 2012

I normally do not review games, I'm a store mgr at GameStop so I see way to many to bother reviewing, however the dev is getting so screwed by people who can't read and who use old garbage I had to correct this wrong. I almost didn't buy this game because of the reviews, it seemed to work for some other people though and all the bad reviews were only for people who couldn't get it to work so I said, I have an iPhone 4 and its updated so ill try it. I bought it, had no issues. I waited in line all night, got the iPhone 5 and haven't had any issues with the game. The actual game is simple, fun and addictive. It Reminds me of silent service for the old original Nintendo only it actually has more ship options then that did. This is a definite buy Lets get real people, it's not a 100 million dollar aaa title, it's a dollar app, you get way more in entertainment then what you pay, give the game a shot and give the dev Credit for putting this thing together, it's very entertaining. Buy it and enjoy the game

Disregard my last post. I wasn't paying attention to the shade of grey used to depict day engagements versus dusk or overcast. If I could offer a suggestion that perhaps in next patch make the engagement icons shade for various conditions reflected with a symbol or darker shade. Aside from my knucklehead moment, very much like the app.

Good point. Right now it only differentiates between day (light gray) and night (dark gray) which I "think" are easy enough to distinguish between.

The day includes clear, cloudy, overcast, thunder and twilight conditions; the last 3 of which prevent the use of the heavy bomber/A-bomb. More color shades could be too subtle to distinguish weather and while adding a weather icon would solve it... there's not much room left in the engagement icon.

Open to ideas here...

v1.02 In Testing

Things have finally quietened down after the unimaginably busy launch of Pacific Fleet. I've finally found time to wrest myself away from marketing activities to work on the next release.

Here's whats in v1.02 which is currently in testing. Essentially all of these are based on feedback from players; some direct and some from reviews on iTunes. If all goes well I expect to submit it to Apple in the next few days.

Update should be compatible with existing saved games.

v1.02
- sliders no longer pan camera
- player aircraft can fly to horizon to attack distant ships
- Shot history now shows actual 2D location of hits relative to player ship (no longer snapped to the aiming line which didn't account for changes in distance when shooting into the wind)
- Difficulty options - turns/battle: 6, 8, 10, 100
- Difficulty options - starting renown: 0, 1000, 25000
- Difficulty options - RADAR accuracy: estimate, enhanced, exact
- Torpedo ammo: 6 for subs, 5 for destroyers
- Depth charge attacks removed (since the outcome was always defeat)
- Escorts now close in and use gunfire to force submarine to surface, once surfaced all ships can engage.
- Regular surface ships now fire/launch aircraft at a very close submerged submarine (they can now spot the periscope)

Unchanged:
- Wind Meter: several players mentioned there is no way to determine wind speed/direction. Examining the ocean wave's direction and speed is the wind meter (contact developer if this is insufficient).

Difficulty options are entirely... optional and the default settings are as per the original release (read as HARD). Many players expressed a desire for longer battles while others found the game a little too difficult so you'll now be free to tweak the game to your play style.

Stay tuned for more updates as we're in the middle of a complete graphics overhaul of the ship models and environments to bring the presentation up to higher standard. Also working on the v1.02 release which will most likely remove the turn restriction and replace it with the ability for enemy ships to disengage.

That's actually already modeled on the IJN aircraft :D
They go down in flames much more readily and more often than their sturdier US counterparts with self-sealing fuel tanks and armour.

Downloaded and played, and yeah not bad for the price. Love the damage modelling. But ah... btw, the Iowas had only nine 16" guns.

Any way though, you've obviously put a lot of effort into this and with some more tweeking could be quite good.

Working fine on 4th gen Ipod touch with ios 5.1.1.

Some suggestions:

Would be good to have incremental upgrades rather than just on/off.

Are you looking to later reintroduce depth charging with random damage/survival? I rather like the 'search' aspect as is.

Multiple player units?

Enemy units to the far left or right of the field 'dissappear' if they move too close, preventing the player from targeting them.

Killerfish Games
10-23-12, 11:14 PM
Thanks for the feedback Troopie.
The Iowa gun typo is fixed in v1.02 which Apple should make available any day now.

Incremental upgrades are certainly possible.
The top one on my list is Fire Control, Improved Fire Control to give 3 then 6 shots in the shot history. Have suggestions for others you'd like to see?

Depth charging: I'd like to bring this back once we get full 2D movement of the the ships implemented. Right now, once the escort passes over the player sub there's no way for the player to shoot back/evade in any meaningful manner as you've mentioned, so auto-kill was initially the only real option with depth charges.

Multiple player units gets requested a lot. It is a big job to engineer the AI to choose targets, but its something I'm working on. Don't expect it in the very near future though as the levels need to be re-worked to keep the game challenging and to support 1-3 player ships vs 1-6 enemy ships (even more if I can optimize the game even further).

The far left/right issue will be solved (eventually) with the full 2D navigation (although its mostly an issue with the submarine only at the moment). The goal there is to introduce full 2D ship movement with "guns on target" to bring in the full tactical aspect of maneuvering for full broadsides etc. Another big project though that will be some time in the making.

v1.03 has just been submitted to iTunes. It is a quick update focused on addressing a few "disengage" issues with islands as well as improving performance on lower-end hardware. We can expect it to be available in about a week and a half.

Here's what's in it:
- Islands with all structures/aircraft destroyed no longer launch aircraft
- Player ship may immediately disengage an island that has had all structures/aircraft destroyed
- Improved memory management on lower-end devices

v1.04 Update: Full Navigation and Guns on Target
Screenshot below shows Iowa closing in on enemy convoy. Ships no longer have simple parallel courses and can navigate at various speed (Back, Stop, 1/3, 2/3, Standard, Full and Flank) in any direction.

Note the Iowa's 2 forward turrets are on target while the rear is not, which means this attack will do only 2/3 damage if it hits. Also note the new bow waves, new ocean graphics and horizon fog which will all be coming in v1.04.

v1.0x Update: New Ship Graphics
Shown is the new graphics for the auxiliary transport Heito Maru. For v1.04 we plan to have at least all Japanese ship graphics upgraded. US ships might be ready too, or may be pushed into v1.05.

We think you'll agree that this is a major step up from the current graphics and you can expect a similar level of detail on warships.

Love this game - its addictive! Yes it will be great when te ships wil be able to turn - I got into a situation yesterday where a DD got onto my starboard side but my guns were facing port - no matter what I did the game wouldn't let me turn the guns to face the DD

Glad you're enjoying it!

What ship were you playing when you got flanked by the DD? It is mostly an issue when playing the sub, but I'm interested to know if it happened to a surface vessel.

It was the light cruiser, but I had another close one where I was just able to target a DD's rudder with my Iowa - if I left it for another turn he would have flanked me with that as well

v1.04 Update: Improved Carrier Ops
With v1.04 we plan to also include a major overhaul of carrier air operations. When playing with full navigation, aircraft will be able to attack from any point on the map and in any direction, giving you full control of attack runs.

In this screenshot a torpedo bomber is about to finish an attack run against a Kongo Class Battleship. Note that the torpedo bomber has approached from the side unprotected by the destroyer escorts and is actually attacking back in the direction towards the Essex Class Carrier that launched it.

In addition, heavily damaged carriers will no longer be able to launch aircraft. Likewise, burning carriers cannot launch until fires are extinguished. We're also considering adding a "Flight Preparation" action whereby a flight must be armed on the flight deck prior to launching in a subsequent action. Damage to a carrier while aircraft are on the flight deck will be greatly increased.

It is not "tap twice", it is "touch with two fingers simultaneously".
So if you "pinch" the screen, as if zooming like you do when viewing ships and your bomb or torpedo will drop :woot:

With v1.04 we'll likely remove the two finger touch and add a button to drop payloads. This will enable us to add full camera panning and zooming on aircraft in flight and shells.

We've been asked, "Is it possible to play as the Japanese? Will that be in a future update if not?"

No, currently you cannot play as the Imperial Japanese Navy.

But YES, we plan to add playable IJN ships very soon. Adding back the IJN ships will allow us to return flags and clearly identify the nationalities of vessels; which we feel is kind of important for a historically based simulation.

Playable IJN ships *might* be included as part of v1.04, but it is not definite yet.

v1.04 Gameplay Movie
Today we have a movie to demonstrate the new gameplay coming in version 1.04.

Gameplay Movie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsuGl-IAm5w)

The battle begins with an enemy escort carrier and two heavy cruisers closing in on an allied escort carrier. Our aim is to bomb the enemy carrier while avoiding the heavy cruiser escorts.

First phase of our turn is movement where we switch to flank speed and pull hard to port (left).

After movement is done, the next phase is to take an action. We select "Bomber Airstrike" and a green aircraft attack marker appears. Next we select the heavy cruiser and use the red slider to move the aircraft attack direction along the center line of the targeted ship. The green slider rotates the direction around the ship enabling any vessel to be attacked at any point from any direction.

To avoid anti-aircraft from the cruisers, final adjustments are made to strike the center of the far side of the target. Tapping "Launch" sends our bomber on its way.

Note that in v1.04 we've freed up the camera and you will now be able to pan and zoom when following aircraft, bombs, shells, torpedoes as well as during all enemy attacks against your ships.

We'll expand on the newly mentioned features over the next few weeks, so stay tuned.
One clarification: the "multiplayer co-op" that Owen mentions should actually refer to multiple ships controlled by one player, namely the much anticipated fleet actions that many have requested.

v1.04 Update: Unit Experience
Originally intended for v1.05, we've been making some headway with what is shaping up to be a great new feature: Unit Experience. Player ships will earn experience based on the amount of enemy ships sunk, giving them a 1 to 5 star rating.

With each rating the vessel gains a series of additional bonuses as outlined in the diagram below to reflect the increased combat experience of the crew, and for carriers their air wings.

However if a ship is sunk, it loses 100% experience. If scuttled, it only loses 50%. Thus it may be better to abandon a ship rather than go down fighting in some situations.

An experienced vessel gains bonuses to speed and turning. In addition damage control is improved and the chances of losing the ship to a magazine/hanger explosion are reduced. Weapon accuracy is also increased, especially with improved RADAR accuracy and another new feature, the Wind Meter. Finally, experienced pilots of carrier air wings are more likely to come home and gain another new feature, bombsights, to get their bombs onto their target.

Screenshot below shows a 5 star carrier-launched bomber attacking a battleship. Note the Wind Meter (upper left) showing direction and strength (shade of blue) of wind as well as the green bombsight indicating bomb hit location.

We think it will be a great system to introduce many player suggestions such as the Wind Meter, Bombsights, better RADAR accuracy and increased anti-aircraft effectiveness.

v1.04 Update: 45 New Combat Zones & Playable Japanese Navy
Here it is, the last of the big features that we're going to squeeze into the next update... and it is BIG!

45 additional combat zones for you to tackle as you take the ships of the Imperial Japanese Navy into combat.

Screenshot shows a preliminary view of a playable Takao Class Heavy Cruiser about to enter the South Pacific. Note that these combat zones are subject to changes as we balance out the campaign. Also the ship panel in the bottom left is currently a work in progress; it will look much nicer than that on release.

This will bring the total number of playable ships in the game up to 12.

FLAGS, FLAGS, FLAGS!!!
The addition playable Imperial Japan means that nation's flags are back at last. They will be back on the Pacific Map to mark combat zones, back on the ship information panels and action reports and even better, on the actual ships themselves. Sound too good to be true? Then take a close look at the new Agano Light Cruiser screenshots from earlier in the week, she's already flying her flag.

v1.04 Testing Complete (YAY!)
It has been a Herculean task, but we're finally there. Overall the game is in great shape and plays fantastically. We have worked to preserve the original game play while adding a much fuller feature set to the game.

Full navigation mode can be incredibly challenging, not in a puzzle way, but in a naval simulation way, as you try to land shots on a maneuvering enemy, while they do the same to you. There will be lots of misses! The game finally feels like the naval simulation we always wanted it to be.

Imperial Japan plays significantly different (and harder) to the US Pacific Fleet, especially since it lacks the submarine and the atomic bomb. You'll be forced to play surface engagements and there are no soft juicy merchants to build up renown with. It is hard going, but unlocking the Yamato eventually evens up the battlefield.

However we have been unable to incorporate most of the new graphics (ships, latest ocean, effects etc), as the old US ships with the new IJN ships just didn't look right. Therefore we have decided to roll out all the new graphics in the next release. It is undecided whether to release v1.04 in its current state, or put it all together with the new graphics in a massive 2.0 release. We'll discuss this more in a bit and maybe put up a poll to solicit your thoughts.

As to v1.04, take a peek at the great wall of text below to see the current state of the game. Almost all of the major issues raised by players have been addressed, especially carrier operations and aircraft balance issues, and we're grateful for your continual feedback and support for the project.

Please note that many bugs were harmed in the making of this update.

v2.0 Last Feature Done
We snagged this screenshot of an Iowa Battleship going up against a Kongo to show off the last feature added to v2.0: Multiple Shells!

There's an easier option to auto converge shells from a salvo into a single point (or close to it) which keeps the game play very similar to the current game (identical if playing with simple navigation). Switching auto converge off is much more realistic with one shell landing where you aimed, while any others have some random drift. More experienced ships have less drift in their salvos.

Wow it's amazing. On par with any ww2 battleship game I've played on the PC!! The Japanese campaign is hard for the first mission or so then it rocks!

Just a nitpick - Are you able to put a setting for US gunnery? Towards the end when I faced off 2 iowas their inaccurate gunnery was a bit laughable!

Also esp in the first mission of the Japanese game some kind of turn predictor for the DD would be great to enable the DD to better steer towards and shadow the sub.

No big gripes though - super effort!!

Thanks for the comments! Glad you're enjoying the game.

Enemy gunnery can be a fickle thing and we designed it this way on purpose. For example an enemy ship may get a lucky bead on you early forcing you to retreat. Also wind speed and direction can greatly throw off the enemy's aim, so if you're good at estimating wind drift you can develop a further advantage over the enemy in windy conditions. Those two Iowas might have been in windy conditions??

For the movement (tunring) indicators, we chose not to display these. Similarly, we don't show gun or torpedo ranges in the user interface. Essentially we wanted the game to have a "feel" aspect to it, whereby the player would learn these things over time. So rather than just show the player gun/torpedo ranges, bomb sights and movement arcs, we wanted a game that was easy to learn but could be mastered with extended playing time.

Blue Stacks doesn't show either Atlantic Fleet nor Pacific Fleet. They do show up in the Google Play store, but not in Blue Stacks. Does it need to be added by the producer?
