Following on from the original thread:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=183128

This thread is more about the building of the cabinets for displaying the collection and eventually culminates in showing the collection on display.

The pace at which new topics appear in GT will hopefully be counterracted by the number of updates (there are approximately 50 photos) :DL

Okay... here goes:

I started collecting 1/72 scale diecast of post WWII British aviation near the beginning of this year but never had anywhere to display them.

My son purchased a house in August and moved out meaning my daughter could upgrade from what was a pretty small room into her brothers larger vacated one.

The room is aproximately 7' x 12' and ideal for a man cave, so in I went with the computer and set about sorting out my collection.

I'm not really liking the floral pattern wallpaper.

Perhaps some nice border paper is in order :hmmm:

It's there to provide contrast and therefore highlight the incredibly manly bundle of raw lumber propped up against it.

At least that's Jim's story and he's stickin' to it. :shifty: :O:

Very nice Jim, nice desk there and love the 'Signal' on the wall. Curious, it looks a lot smaller than the dimensions you've measured but I'm reckoning that's the angle you took that pic from. :yep:

Next instalment

Six 6' lengths of 2"x2" dressed timber for cabinet stand materials

http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/4527/28887871.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/16/28887871.jpg/)

The wall the cabinets will stand against...notice the step on the second picture down. That is there because it covers the angle of the stairs leading to the ground floor.

http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/1755/83653694.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/842/83653694.jpg/)

http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/8392/81265047.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/11/81265047.jpg/)

This is an online picture of one of the cabinets (they each come in two pairs) measuring 120cm wide x 128cm tall x 40cm deep.

I seriously miscalculated the building of said cabinets thinking they could be built vertically or horizontally therefore you will notice later on the room could only accomodate three of the four pairs

Time to commence the display cabinet stand:

The conservatory is a comfortable temperature at this time of year....get out the workbench and put it in the conservatory...

Sorted out the saw and the portable workbench...I'm not a carpenter capabale of producing joints so I purchased 19mm angle brackets and screws to fit.

I recently started a thread asking for assistance in locating a a glass shelving supplier and whilst the price was slightly cheaper than what I was quoted I decided to stick with the closest supplier.

What I didn't realise until I went to collect the shelving was the fact that my quote didn't include VAT.

The VAT was £56 so I'll let you work out the total cost

A good idea at that and one I'm still unable to make my mind up on...I may swivel the three spotlights toward the cabinet and see how that looks first.

The room isn't all that big and I'm worried too much light might be 'overkill'.

Thanks Chris but tbh I've seen a few collections that would put mine to shame.

I've still three empty shelves and a few of the others still have space left so I estimate the collection has some room for growth yet....in fact a Harrier FRS.1 and a Sea King from Mount Pleasant, Falklands arrived today so I'll be posting a further update picture when I return home tomorrow :03:

:yep:

They came from B&Q Jeff, not sure if they are in the US but I'm sure you'll have a lot more variety and choice than we get in the UK :DL

They're about four year old now and iirc this is the latest replacement/design:

http://www.diy.com/nav/decor/lighting/indoor-lighting/spotlights___downlights/-specificproducttype-spotlights/Zorbo-3-Light-Round-Spot-Chrome-Effect-9706444

The other bedrooms are much larger so I fitted them with four in-line designs similar to this:

http://www.diy.com/nav/decor/lighting/indoor-lighting/spotlights___downlights/-specificproducttype-spotlights/Radian-Crescent-Bar-Spot-Light-Chrome-Effect-9261264

Ah, Thanks Jim.
After a quick search seems Zorbo are only in the UK.
Shame as they have some killer designs!
I may have to do a 'rip off' copy.
:haha:

I have a nice Chrome Baby Moon hub cap that could be drilled for the base.
Then buy a few add-on swivel lights to kind of duplicate the design.
:yep:

It would be perfect for the Hallway as it's not really a hallway per say.
(And I know when Steve gets back he'll bitch because I spelt per say wrong! :D)

I reckon you've hit the nail on the head...she is the only show in town and fills a gap in Brit aviation that Corgi should have filled long ago.

The other problem being the same company are well overdue on the Sea Vixen as well and I have seen a few shots of her and she doesn't look much better.

My die-cast collection is somewhat overshadowed by the other halfs collection of 'Zoids' which are plastic motorised model kits, originally aimed at the younger market they're quite a cult thing now and some of the more recent ones known as 'HMM' are quite expensive and damn complex to put together. Trust me, I know, I've had to try and rebuild one after knocking it off the shelf...thankfully I managed it and my execution was postponed.
Snag is, we've run out of shelf space so they're everywhere now...it's like some kind of invasion has overrun our bedroom. Still, they are fun little things, I'm kind of attached to the Command Wolves, and it was the other half who encouraged me to collect my models so I can't complain :03:

http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z115/GhostLiger_Sasaki/Zoid%20collection%20photos/ZC6.jpg

As you can see, it kinda expands, and grows XD You can just make out my Sopwith Pup on my aircraft shelf. This is an old photo though, I have since negotiated for that shelf for my growing collection.

Well here she is, without a shadow of a doubt the worst example yet in the collection

What can you do though?....they are limited in number and advertised at least six months ahead of release so you have no option but to dip your toes in the water.

The only positive I can think of is the fact this is a type that has never been done at 'collectors level' so is therefore the only show in town.

I only pray and hope the Sea Vixen on advanced pre-order looks better but the initial casting photo I've seen doesn't exactly fill me with any great hope :nope:

Thank you for sharing these link with us/me.

However I should have given a more detailed explanation

It have to be american battleship and in scale 1:350

I have found some models so far( I had used wrong search-words)
Now I just write "Diecast models of american battleship"

BB 39 USS Arizona
BB 63 USS New Jersey

They cost about $1100 each :o

Nice 54 Sqn Jag, only one place that's going in that paint job - Norway. My first proper posting was Coltishall and the Jag is just an ace jet - nothing better than a six-ship simulated airfield attack - coming from all angles at full pelt in seconds.

Oh definitely....the Sea Vixen and Javelin have been heavily criticised by the diecast community.

The Sea Vixen just has the edge in quality though and seeing as they are the only examples currently available quite a few people have purchased them just to 'fill a gap' in their collection.

I've just taken delivery of the TSR2 and will photograph her later.

I ended up in the bathroom blowing my nose..brought water to my eyes ~SALUTE~

I was on 208 Sqn when they did the very first red Flag at Nellis AF base in USA in 1977 we had if i remember 4 Buccaneers and also 2 Vulcan bombers.
The Buccaneers and vulcans would work as a team wih the vulcans flying at one altitude just above the Buccaneers at around 50'. When intercepted by the F5 aggressor sqn the Buccaneers would peel out from underneath the Vulcans as they approached their targets and fly off in opposite directions leaving the F5 with a big old Vulcan to engage which by this time had slipped his four huge RR Olympus engines into reheat and disappeared into the distance. Our compatriots in arms where in shock as this had never happened to them before. Best flying i've ever heard of.
Apart from the US Phantom who thought he was good flew alongside the ArK Royal at deck level. When asked if he could do it again he of course obliged this time he was told to look beneath him where he saw a Buccaneer skimming the wave tops again our compatriots were stunned.

Herr-Berbunch
02-24-12, 11:36 AM
I was once (around '88-ish) just outside RAF North Cotes on the coastal side, looking toward RAF Donna Nook range when all of a sudden there was a Buccaneer approaching from over the water, but only just over the water - how he cleared the fence to North Cotes I've no idea :o

Another occasion I was cycling back from same spot parallel to North Cotes Runway and there was six Hercs doing virtually the same height!

Herr-Berbunch
02-24-12, 11:41 AM
Further to the Herc thing, my mate who is now a pilot on them - formerly a loadie, showed me footage taken during a Red Flag exercise of video of a RAF Herc jinking all over at low level as the guy on the ground tried to get a fix on it. Audio was included and used some expletives of annoyance, followed by awe, conlcuding with, 'we've got to show those guys this footage!' which they obviously did. :D

Gotta love it when we pull a rabbit out of our hats like that.

Didn't we partake in an airspace attack exercise with the Canucks against the Yanks when we played the OpFor invading US airspace in a nuclear war scenario and only one of our eight Vulcans was 'splashed'.

That trainer version still doesn't sit right with what picture comes to mind as the Hawker Hunter.
Wierd isn't it, I know its a Hunter and it looks just like the earlier model you posted, but it still just doen't click as the plane in the mind.

I think it's the cockpit, something looks different about the rear section of it. Probably because it's a trainer, or it could be because we're used to the single seater versions. :hmmm:

I can only imagine it is because the canopy is slightly wider yet no longer than the single seat variant.

I much prefer the trainer seating arrangement in the Hawk, Jaguar. Tornado etc....one in the front and one behind.

My father was in the R.C.A.F.,and growing up I went to many an air show. The R.C.A.F. had a Sabres aerobatics team called The Golden Hawks. They were only around for four or five years, but I saw them three times. Pretty cool.

:yep: Yup, there was an airshow a couple of years back at the old USAF base at Bentwaters, had a nice line-up, Seafire, Spitfire, Sabre, Hunter, Dragon Rapide, Texan, two P-51s and the customary Wing Walkers and Aerial display teams. For a small organisation it was a big show, a B-17 and a Fw-109 replica were supposed to come too but couldn't make it sadly.

Was a great day out, seeing the Sabre was particularly special because they used to operate out of Bentwaters in the 1960s.

She was a versatile bird. :yep: The Bentwaters Sabres were the first deployed in the UK, and the first assigned to NATO. IIRC Bentwaters also had F-84s, F-101s, F-4s, A-10s and F-16s, as well as Herky Birds, various helos and an alien spaceship (apparently). I arrived too late for the F-4s but I remember the A-10s very fondly :yep:. Good times, shame the base closed, but that's the Soviets fault for folding up. :03:

XR751 - Nobody seems to have seen it since it was sold to a businessman (not usually a good sign) and moved by road in 1988, however I've done a bit of digging around the webz and found it in Cornwall (PL14 5HE). The good news is it looks like it's been looked after, the downside is it's in very private property. I don't suppose I blame them, if I had the money and the land I'd have a great deal of aircraft out of the paws of sticky children and thieving gypos - but I'd open up a few times a year to enthusiasts. But that's just a dream.

Edit - Found a pic (http://www.airliners.net/photo/UK---Air/English-Electric-Lightning/1086021/M/), could do with a little tidy up...

As for XR718, last seen in pieces on a farm near Darlington with the (faded?) hope of getting her patched up for display, that was six years ago though.

Looks like one of my approaches...

In regards to EE Lightnings, the Cold War Museum guys at Bentwaters have managed to get their hands on an ex-Saudi Lightning, ZF581 (serial 53-675), but alas, with no engines. It'll join their Hunter, Meteor and Jag. Would be nice if they ever got them flight-worthy as they'd land up flying over here a fair bit

Oberon, the CAA refused to grant a Lightning a certificate - something about not liking a civilian-run Mach 2 jet with ejector seats over the public. I'd say now that Thunder City is closed we'll never see one flying again. Even the yanks are struggling to get XS422 near flyable, I think UK team heading out to fit engine, in Oct!!! :o

Ah yes, I remember Nagys dad mentioning something like that. They were maintanence hogs at the end of their lives so it makes sense that they'd be tough to get fixed up.
