This thread brings back memories. I had something like 3 drawers full of those when I moved out of my folks' house then life swept me away from it. Some really nice work there.
Actually, it reminded me of a plan I kind of have, to dress up one of my small rc helicopters in one of them fuselages. Would really want an Alouette II for it. Well, one day, perhaps.

Here we have the beast, a second example the Operation Black Buck version is on pre-order and due Novemberish.
She is too big (L 446mm W 469mm) for the current collection cabinet so I may well need to purchase something larger to house her in.

You know something Jim, I like to collect a few cars and such, only have a few planes, but they are still in their boxes. Have a few cars out, but don't have an enclosed cabinet like you have, so have to dust them off at times. So I decided to try and come up with a different way to keep them clean and thought this worked quite well actually, and is fun to look at!:haha:

Very nice Jim!
Cheers Eddie but the rotor blades if I'm to be honest are fitted upside down (the markings on the blades should be facing down and not up) so I've corrected that now
Why does every plane have that funny 'Bulls eye' on them? :D

By planes I presume you mean choppers or the Lightnings in the earlier post. The 'Bulls eye' I presume are the RAF roundels, either that or the viewing ports in the Chinooks that allow maximum vision as opposed to that limitation a flat window allows?
Cleaning?.....about once a year or when I notice the dust becoming unsightly :)

Jim, I wanted to ask: Are these models steel or plastic ? Are they already assembled and / or painted ? I ask because of how well detailed and neatly painted they are. The Avro Vulcan bomber remains one of my favorites. I don't see kits for the cancelled Valkyrie bomber. Either way, great collection, including the patches.
Eddie's collection is nice too for the obvious reasons. :03:

The material is diecast but over the years an increasing proportion of the build is plastic (the 1/72 Vulcan being a perfect example of a 60/40 diecast/plastic mix).
The models are ready assembled and painted but you usually get the ordnance and undercarriage (up/down option) individually packaged inside the box (the Vulcan above again being a perfect example of inflight/on the ground configuration).

That's some fine aircraft Jim! I and another guy have this great solitary board game dealing with the Dambuster raid in 1943 by the RAF. He decided to do the part of the game where you actually make the bomb run in 3D! He had a friend of his laser the bases for the models of the Lancs, which would also hold the game pieces for the aircraft. Still has to do the water and the dam itself, along with the bouncing bomb piece. This is what he has done so far, a bit more then I would do, but looks great!
https://s19.postimg.org/iapzez283/15727096_10154146892160686_7198954476501212001_n.j pg (https://postimg.org/image/auqpt6ein/)[url=h
So I would like to see you do a diorama for a RAF base with your models on it too!:D

12-31-16, 01:32 PM
That's pretty astonishing.
There was an expansion pack for Flight Simulator 2008/Combat Flight Simulator 2 which allowed you to plan and execute the raids in real time in your sim Lancasters; the sound effects of the merlin engines in this sim are quite unbelievable. I'm waiting until I have the time to do full justice to this sim before starting it, as it deserves not being just 'dipped into'. If you can find it, get it!
Already have it for CFS2! The y have designed the ETO for CFS2 after this Dam Buster addon was made. Used to be able to buy it from Justflight years ago. But the setup for the dams worked into the ETO scenery just fine, so it was great, until i dropped the bomb and missed, lol

That looks really promising Eddie and reminds me of a couple of fellow aviation collectors who also build bespoke dioramas. Personally speaking, space constraints prevent me from doing likewise but I do have some coloured sheets depicting various runways and flight decks which I do intend putting to use some day.
Same here Jim, not enough room for me to make something like that, but it is fun to see what some guys come up with!

Which scale are the Vulcans? They look pretty big on that table :o
Reread the Falkland operation B. Buck, now this was really a long range deployment. The crews handeled that very well and with determination, despite a lot of problems.
OT Hope your renovation project is soon over :)

Vulcans are 1/72 scale (446mm length, 469mm wingspan) and the largest dimensionally in my collection.
There were seven Black Buck missions during the Falklands conflict, five of which were performed and two of which were cancelled:

As for the renovation, the wife is running around like a headless chicken trying to keep on top of all the mess.

Those squadrons bringing back childhood memories :D
Regarding Vulcans and Black Buck, I had the honour of seeing a talk by Martin Withers a couple of months ago. There was very little new material for me, but some good points about the last flights of XH558 - there is footage on the interwebz of the Vulcan rolling. The footage wasn't of the highest quality and looked potentially fake, there was a CAA investigation into it and in the Q&A session it was brought up. Martin denied it happened with such a huge grin it obviously was real.

Ah, I should have figured out that it indeed IS a seaplane capable of using underwater airfields.:)
How about takeoff's? I assume they fill those thick, low wingloading wings with helium for extra lift and that'll do it.

Best reply would be to quote partially and send the link below.
Although the origin of Tiger Meet is a bit fuzzy, it appears to have started with the 79th and No 74 squadron RAF getting together for some whiskey and cheer in 1960. In 1961 the meeting was continued, with the addition of the French EC 1/12, and so the NATO Tiger Association was born. In 1962 then Lt Mike Dugan volunteered as project officer. Lt Dugan, never one to let authority corrupt fighter pilot activities, decided it should be a true “NATO Tiger Day“. He therefore sent letters directly to all the tigers for which he found an address. A number of units immediately accepted but returned their reply “through channels “. This of course resulted in all the HQs (USAFE, 3rd AF, and the 20th Wing) descending on the 79th with “requests” as to what the hell we thought we were doing. Mike’s program won the Wing Commander’s support and they, in turn convinced Head Quarters that NATO Tigers was possible. About this same time a London paper headlined an article, “IRON CROSSES OVER SUFFOLK” or something close. I then got a call from an RAF friend at Fighter Command.

Uncannily close to the mark Eddie :)
About three month ago I entertained small shoots of ideas to either build an extension on the property (soon dismissed on the grounds we had recently spent major expenditure on landscaping and re-designing the area around the property) or actually moving into something a little bit larger (also dismissed on the grounds that both kids had left home so technically we only needed one bedroom plus a spare for any potential future grandchildren).
No prizes for guessing which side of the marriage had the final, defining answer.
Outcome: I guess I'll have to make do and utilise as much as possible the display space currently at my disposal :03:

I believe the Irish Airforce also used them, but stopped using them when they realised they made holes in the wing when the bombs were released!! :) :D Hey everything got mounted 'over the wing(s)' including the Le Prieur rockts on a Nieuport 16
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/04/Nieuport_w_Le_Prieur_rockets.jpg
https://i2.wp.com/ww2-weapons.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Nieuport-Raketen-1.jpgForget holes in the wings: The steel tipped 100 gram black powder rockets were fired electrically from the interplane struts (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interplane_strut) supporting the wings of biplanes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biplane) via a cockpit switch. The switch launched all the rockets consecutively. The rockets were generally fired at a range of 100–150 metres with the aircraft at an inclined dive angle of 45 degrees. The steeper the dive the straighter the trajectory and the more accurate the attack. (as a black powder shooter: the angle would dissipate the 'rainbow effect' of blackpowder projectile; much like an arc golf shot.) Attacks were made in the direction of the length of the balloon and against the wind, (steadier with a rotary engine wobble but slowing the attack speed: (80 mph) the pilot taking aim via the plane's existing gun-sight. However, the ignition and discharge of each rocket did not occur immediately and a delay varied slightly from one rocket to another. Thus the pilot had to continue to hold the target in his gun-sight and the dive continued until the last rocket discharged.:k_confused:Bear in mind the anti-aircraft artillery on a preset balloon altitude was severe around observation balloon of the time...nerves of steel time here. https://robertwalshwriter.wordpress.com/2015/10/01/the-balloon-busters/ (https://robertwalshwriter.wordpress.com/2015/10/01/the-balloon-busters/) One thing separating most balloon busters from regular fighter aces was that many of the war’s most famous aces actively refused to attack balloons at all. Manfred von Richthofen never attacked a balloon. Top-scoring British ace Edward ‘Mick’ Mannock scored his first ‘kill’ by destroying a balloon, but found the job so dangerous that he never attacked another. (oddly both were killed by ground-fire anyway:hmmm:) Destroying observation balloons had genuine influence on the local progress of the war. Shooting down novice enemy fighter pilots and very occasionally killing a leading enemy ace simply didn’t have the same value.

Jim, do you have any ground maintenance vehicles or anything like that to go with the ones that have the landing gear down?
Do the decals ever turn yellow or peel on the edges?
Jimbuna
06-28-17, 10:11 AM
Not got any vehicles but a few collectors I know personally are well into them.
I have recently purchased eight display mats with differing themes (flight deck of HMS Illustrious, Ark Royal, Kandahar airbase, Harrier GR,3 field deployment etc.) so future aircraft shots will have some of them displayed.
The decals on most of the models are tampa printed but there has recently been a few releases with the stick on type which may not bode well for the future.

That got me to thinking and here is what I've just come across:
Nicknames: Cranberry; Caterpillar (Derogatory name given to USAF B-57s by Vietcong); Marrow.

Wanted to ask you Jim, without going back through all 50 pages of this thread, lol Do you have a Lightning T-5? Was just wondering because I never heard of one before, but just got one added in my flight simulator. I guess there is also a T-55 and T-55S?
Jimbuna
07-25-17, 05:24 AM
The Lightning (or Frightning as she is affectionately known by some of us in the UK) T5 (there are no other variants such as T-55 or T-55S) has never been produced as a commercial model but one modelling company produced one in limited numbers (72) and I have no 7.
The T5 (or twin-stick) is a two seat trainer and IMHO a stunning example.
I'll get her photographed later today and post a shot on here.
Can't wait to see it Jim! I got the Aerosoft Lightning F3 and now the T5 also, I miss spoke on the T55S, its listed as a T 55K, still not sure what the designation is for, but its a beautiful looking aircraft! Looking forward to seeing the version you have! :) Just did some checking up on it, the T55 was the export version of the T5 that was sold to Saudi Arabia, the T55K was the export version of the T5 that was sold to Kuwait. Now we both know, lol
