View Full Version : [TEC] Playable Surface Ships

All -
I would like to spawn a thread about playable surface ships for SH5. I know that it took some time with SH3,4 before anyone started generating these mods because of their stray away from the fact that this is a "Sub" sim :)
However, myself included there are a vast number of us who adore controllable surface ships, and I personaly enjoy making missions around them for multiplayer.
Trust me 8 guys in multiplayer each with a cruiser or DD makes for some very fun times.
What is different between SH3 / 4 and our beautiful new platform when it comes to this aspect of modding?
I assume we will still need to use one of the playable sub's and just change all the controllers, etc.

Excellent idea and with powerful scripting that is available for modding, we could turn any existing ships into drivable ships as a first step!

I too would love to see some playable surface ships. I dream of using the Hipper in the campaign.

Since I'm the only one who is on the Surface Warfare Mod team, who, as far as I know, has a copy, I will make an unofficial statement as the second-in-command.
We have stated before that we want to build playable surface ships for SHV. once we get a couple more members on the bandwagon and figure out how to build playable ships, you should see some start popping up. I like the idea of a playable surface ship in campaign mode, with the truly dynamic campaign that is provided, one battleship can change the war faster than one U-boat. I have hopes we will get to talking about this on our private forums soon. I'll see if I can keep everyone updated. :yeah:

count me in ! im an accomplished texture artist and general fiddler of files.
Please start by doing a workhorse escort like a corvete, a frigate or a Destroyer so we can so convoy screening and fight against our bubleheads friends.
I would like to help on this project but I have no specific skills for creating such art.
However you have all my support :up:

I think what killed "us" (surface ship lovers) most in the previous games was the lack of a truly proper damage model.
Also I found that when playing SH4 with playable BB's and such that the best skill level for the enemy BB's and my own was "COMPETENT".
Anything above that and the number of shell hits versus shells fired was just unrealistic. 5/6 shells making contact at nearly maximum range from both mains and secondarys?
While doing this helped a bit with the lack of a proper damage model, once you did start taking inevitable hits it wasn't long before you were done.
Also and i'm sure if you can create diesel exhaust for a Uboat, you could add the ability to create a "smoke screen" which would further make battles more interesting.

As 1st in command, I agree. Once we get the Royal Navy/Royal Australian Navy part of the Surface Warfare Mod done, I would love to do the Kriegsmarine in SHV. I will get a copy in June when I come back from vacation.

I tried changing some nodes and things last week but it was just a CTD party...
Anyone have links to the guides rlsd for SH3/4 playable ships? I can't remember where they were or the thread names...

Yes a big battleship can wipe out one or more convoys disrupting the material flow to england.

I am reviving this thread after letting it rest for some time and for the modding community to "catch up" to the game release.
Now that time has gone on, are there any thoughts on this?

As regards the proper damage model, we at the TSWSM project created a very refined damage model that worked out alot of the kinks that we came across. We just never relaeased it.

Hey we do have a pre alpha build, most of the ships are working properly , but no campaign yet. All the team member are about but I havnt seen any signs of work recently

Any hope of porting over the basic ability of controlling the units, and the camera position being on the bridge?
I'm sure that we can work out the damage zones using Goblin after the fact.
I just don't know how to change a playable unit to a surface ship and move the camera position and such.
Would be really nice to walk the entire deck of the ship too like we do our subs...
