View Full Version : Journey's End for The Grey Wolves Mod Team

My friends,
(This is going to hurt.)
Apologies for making a new thread for this post... but I think you'll understand after you've read it.
After days of agonizing over the GWX-related discussion/tasks at hand for this weekend... it is clear to me that there is really only one choice left to us.
In the light of Ubisoft's SH5 preview announcement and impending release... and given the now-reduced manpower available to the GWX dev team...
...we are clearly no longer capable of executing our mission to develop GWX4. Even if we were able to do so, many of the objectives we intended to execute, (as stated on our website and elsewhere) would likely be mirrored only a short time later with the release of SH5... rendering our work obsolete. Just as we've done our dead-level-best to impliment things most sought after by the community... it is clear that the Silent Hunter Devs have been listening to you. This is a good thing guys. It is rather logical that parallel courses were eventually steered into in many ways...
Try not to be angry at us when considering all the things we 'could have done'... or 'should have done' during the development of GWX. Please understand that many of the good people of the GWX dev team have given the final measure of all they could given the circumstances presented by familial obligations, faltering relationships at home, the failed economy, loss of jobs, the demands of school, increased workloads placed on our numbers by employers that sign our real life paychecks, ... and the limitations of simply being human. The stresses of developing GWX have always been very real, and often very painful... in addition to all the things spoken of above.
The only thing that could ever really harm us... REAL LIFE... has made the decision for us. Admitting it... is simply miserable. However, sometime in the night while we were sleeping, we passed the point of no return. Though just a few weeks ago, it seemed we could still get the job done, the engine has stopped because Real Life is demanding its payment.
I hope you'll allow us to end our voyage with our honor intact. I think that we all knew that the hardest part of our journey... would be that someday we would have to end that journey.
Without a doubt, we can sit as I've done the last few days... and rethink our choices a million times over... but the writing really is on the wall.
This project has become a part of who we are... and for that reason, letting go is heart-breaking. In so many ways, this has become SO MUCH MORE than "just a game." This project has been about PEOPLE... and TEAMWORK... and the WILLPOWER to build SOMETHING out of NOTHING... and about being SUCCESSFUL in the face of adversity.
In the end, we must thank our enemies too... as they helped drive our team to succeed.
Most importantly though, our project has come to represent a global friendship... and PROOF that a few good and determined people can change their surroundings for the better.
We have stood on top of the world... and the view was breathtaking... but no one can stay there for long, and no-one can march forever. The air is very thin there... and if you stay... a storm will take you.
Going forward...
Effective immediately, we are retiring the GWX4 project and I am releasing the GWX team from all actual or implied developmental responsibilities.
We do reserve the right to hold the titles "The Grey Wolves Project" and/or "GWX" for future consideration... (I think that after all this time we've earned the rights to our own name.) Myself and Jimbuna will continue to oversee GWX interests that remain (detail management following the closure of the project) but without any expectation or obligation to start again with Silent Hunter V at some date in the future.
I also humbly ask that you in the community will lend your morale support to the above requests.
Here and now, the idea of re-assembling the team for SH5 when the time comes, just doesn't seem to be a viable concept... The people on our team are very tired and from what I understand of SH5, it is to be built on a totally new engine... and its files may subsequently be completely alien to us.
All we can really do is speculate concerning how the release and possible patching of SH5 will go anyway.
The coming days will be very difficult for us... and I personally feel a great deal of hurt for those on the GWX dev team who have poured so much work into all things GWX4 over the last few months... and am absolutely gutted for those of you who have followed our work and encouraged us again and again over the years.
This weekend we take the train 'home to Berlin'... knowing we gave it all we had... For all our faults and shortcomings we hold the simple hope that the paw-prints we leave behind, and the marks we made on the history of the submarine simulation genre... are in the end, viewed as 'well done.'
Its time to end this letter now, and tend to the details of our demobilization... and its getting hard to see anyway...
... and so I'll save my last words for The Grey Wolves dev and crew...
With hand on a heavy heart...
I THANK YOU ALL!!!
~SALUTE!~

Thank you, for everything you guys have done. It is too bad you guys couldn't pull through and complete GWX4, but your reasons are well founded and understood. You have left a lasting impression on what it means to play a game in the Silent Hunter franchise. You can't go very far without seeing GWX on any forum or sub-fora in this community. Thank you for giving new life to Silent Hunter 3. Without GWX, SHIII would be nothing but a speck in my registry, a game I do not play.
As if I can't say it enough, Thanks again and good luck with whatever else is in store for you guys!

You guys and gal took an unpolished game and turned it into a real Sub Simulation.

GWX,
Too much joy has come from GWX to ever have an angry thought about your and your team. We have enjoyed each and every change that has come about in GWX. You and your team have given so much to us the fans, that there seems a lack of proper appreciation we can give back. A mere Thank You just doesn't sound like enough.....We all wish you the Best in the Future in whatever you decide to do. Just remember you will not be forgotten....:salute::salute::salute:

Your team was the best. You have, and will continue to give me many hours of enjoyment.
You have taken SHII from a simulation and made it "Our Game". Please do not lose your skills and abitity to do this.
I will miss you and your surprises.

Thank you for all you have done for the community. SALUTE :salute:
My consolation is that you guys will stay around here and be one of the most powerful assets with your experience and advice for the new generation of modders that will some day appear with SH5. People whose names we don't even know right now will appear sooner or later and take over, but unlike others before, they will not start with empty hands. They will have the GWX team as inspiration and example to follow, and hopefully your encouragement and expert advice.

We'll be happy do do what we can. Unfortunately it will be with a greatly reduced availability and capacity. A lot of our guys feel more than a little guilt about not being able to go farther. I'm just hoping that they can lay that feeling aside, enjoy being free of expectation and can simply enjoy themselves doing whatever feels good.
Hopefully too, the community here will aim their support to the Silent Hunter Devs for the SH5 project (we are ALL LUCKY to have them) ... and for those such as Lurker_HLB3 who continue to mod SH4... regardless of Atlantic/Pacific preferred theater. Lurker might have the personality of a fence-post... but he does good work.
(Cheers Lurker.;) All the best wishes.)

Snifff ...wips away a tear.... GWX > probably the best mod team for any game anyone has seen to date, lead by probably the most composed and level headed mod leader ever.
Thank you for everything (and not jus the GWX versions) ... thank you for your spirit & inspiration. I am sure your work will be motivating modders for years to come.
I really hope SH5 supplies most fo what we are all looking for and hope that the GWX team are not so burned out by their modding work that they are able to enjoy it when it's released)..... that way if it's good, they'll get some well eaned enjoyment .... and if it's not ...... No I am not going to go there ;)
Sad to hear/read this!:wah: POssibly your are right when saying that the release of SH5 will render your work obsolete, but (speaking for myself) in the other hand, many people may or/and haven't a PC that will run SH5 but can run SH4!
Sorry if I'm out of line here, but I was so looking forward to GWX4!

I agree with you 100% on this point alone and this point alone is enough to come to the decision to rest your modding tools for the moment. The moment I witnessed the engine room in SH5 I immediately wondered about Tomi99's engine room for SH4. All that work for possibly naught. But hey, SH5 will need a hand in making it great! The GWX team and all the modders here at SS make it great! So take a break, watch the new trailers come out for SH5 and start formulating your plans. :03:

Well not much I can say to ease the pain, sorry that you (the GWX team) had to go through all the work & toil only to toss it in, maybe some of the work done, if any completed, can be released and added to Lurker's OM mod, wouldn't be a total loss then .... Just a thought.
Chin up guys, SH5 is approaching and in the meantime you can rest and attend to RL issues without as much pressure, many thanks for your past work, especially GWX3, very much a "Job well done"!:yeah:

Kpt Lehman,
Thank you and the team for everything you've done with GWX3. For GWX4, it sounds like the team gave their last full measure for the rest of us. Even though they couldn't make it through to the end for very real reasons, thank you for trying to bring the magic of GWX to SH4.
That spirit and dedication to share your love of the war in the North Atlantic are one of the things that keep so many coming to these forums, and trying on their own to make these games better for others one small mod at a time. If I hadn't seen the three letters "GWX" in a google search a few years ago, I would never have found this community, and would never have gotten so much enjoyment out of SH3 and SH4. Best wishes to you and your team in the future.

to add to my earlyer post...
Its hard to believe its all over...
The mod team, thats taken a thrashing, but kept on going is kaput...
I thought The gray wolfs would never stop challenging the silent hunter engine, pushing ahead makeing a great mod that helped keep silent hunter 3 alive for the past five years... but sadly... as all great things, it has all came to an end...
I think the summer of 2009 will always be remembered as the summer that many famous people died... there was that one week were we lost a celeb a day... but I think that if I remember this summer for anything... it would have to be the End of the Grey Wolfs team...(and the end of the current Top Gear series also lol...)
Its sad to think that someday even subsim will come to an end... as all good things do...

A hearty Thank You to all the members of the GWX Team... You all have left a legacy on the video game world that ALL game developers should emulate... through listening to your community, and for the sheer love of the game you have endevored to make it simply the best! :yep: Bravo Gentlemen! Your hard work and attention to detail will sorely be missed - but you have inspired many! Best of luck to each of you in all your future plans - Long Live GWX!
So unexpected, and at the same time not so... But life is like this, the realm of "impermanence". :wah::wah:
I DO concur with everypoints mentionned in the posts abovel, and wish to thank Captain Lehmann and the whole of the GWX team ( and why not all the modders of this community who were, and are still working on the work laid by the GWX team ) and for the countless hours of happiness untill the early hours of the nights...
So yes, R.I.P. GWX, but that's not the end of it, and the "ripples" will be felt for still quite a while... ( And not everybody will be able to buy a new rig for SH5...I won't )
See it that way Cpt Lehmann, sometimes in life it's time to take a good break. Very few people here can ever imagine ( I include myself ) the level of involvement it must have asked from you and your team in your private lives and else...
So yes, take a chance, look a the bright side of it. Everyone needs a break. Rest from it for as long as needed...go on vacation if you can and when the time ( undoubtedly ) comes, you can always say :salute: I'm here, (because I doubt that you could ever stay UN-interrested with SH5 for very long ) Hehehe... ;)
So, thank you again, Captain Lehmann, good rest, and we'll see you in a while, I have no doubt.
From everybody here... :salute::salute::salute::salute::salute::salute::s alute::salute:

What to say, indeed it a real shame it had to end this way - but as the Kpt said there was no real aternative.
We faced an inevitable prospect of it either being - too late or too rushed. Nobody wanted either.
In many ways the bottom line was that GWX 4 was (in hidsight) a bridge too far.
The amount of work needed to re-write the campaign files and the reworking of imported units was a MONSTROUS task.
Another point is that nobody, (including ourselves) wants GWX4 to be competing with SHV in any way.... Im not saying it would or could just that - it is a potential confilct of intreast that would do no favors or justice to anybody.
We're deeply sorry to let down those who were looking forward to the mod
Still, I feel honoured to have been apart of GWX, and to have worked with such a cool bunch of people.
Thanks to all of you here for your understanding and your kind words, It really means a hell of a lot to the team.
I have no doubt that Ubi devs will do a cracking job with SHV, Its got me drooling already :DL
And when it ships in 2010, we can be sure that a tidal wave of talanted modding energy will be surging though these forums. (new and old alike)
There is still much to look forward to gentlemen.
thank you for everything. SH3/GWX3 for me has to much potential and gameplay fun / immersion that I don't feel very unhappy about that decision.
best wishes for the future for you all!

Even the staunchest GWX critic would be hard-pressed to deny the overwhelming impact that GWX has had on SH3. It would be more than fair to say that GWX set the benchmark for SH3 modding. It would be even fair to say that GWX set the benchmark for the modding of other games, as it is not that uncommon to read references to GWX ("I wish we had a GWX-type mod for <insert game here>") in other forums.
Certainly I have been a long time user of GWX and the earlier TGW (when it was just Lehmann and Marhkimov) and can say without doubt that SH3 would not be on my HDD today were it not for GWX.
Being on the GWX team introduced me to some great guys like BBW, Rubini and Ref. There was a time when I enjoyed opening my inbox to see it full with email from these guys.
Lehmann, you can "retire" with dignity and the knowledge that you have made many thousands of SH3 players happy. We did not always see eye-to-eye (heck, you frustrated the excrement out of me), but no-one can argue with the results.
And I'm sure not many people here are fully aware of the personal sacrifices that you made during your reign as GWX project manager, just to make them happy.
To you and the team--both past and present--thanks. :salute:

First we had RuB, then NYGM, then GWX. The evolution of mods for SH3 has been a great asset for this community and it is always a shame to see any mod team disbanded for one reason or another.
But in light of the SH5 announcement it is the only way to go. SH5 will have a new game engine so there wouldn't be much code that could be ported over anyway.
However, all the research that went into making these great mods is not lost, it will encourage future modders to pick up where the old ones left and on a new engine.
Progress never dies.

Dear Readers and GWX Friends!
So I'm new in this store, but she believes that a

Has won so many battles now going into retirement.
So I do not think so! ,
or a private person or a Jim,
no, these people are born for something, and often they did not know themselves.
You know sometimes it does not mean that you have become cult figures.
I am impressed how much has GWX friends when I see it.
I am a person who never gives up and I do not want repetition of what
Cap. Lehmann said
I am confident, maybe it means no more GWX4 but it is definitely a GWX5 or GWX6
It is important that it is with us, and perhaps in the bad time
Cep. Lehmann and the GWX supported.
Because he does it all for you and get no money for it.
To my commitment it will not fail, I am ready for any mission!

Also ich glaube nicht!! ,

Well as I now run Vista 64bit I cannot run SH3. Every week I would lurk here waiting for the GWX4 announcement. built with guilty feelings.
When I played a GWX modded SH3 (Till Dec 08) I was in awe....of how much time and effort must have gone into the mod that I could never appreciate.
I can only give the GWX team, past and present, my heartfelt thanks for the hours of fun you have all given me, whilst never really knowing just how much time, effort and family life you all gave up, reading the post has helped me just a little to appreciate how much that must have really been.

Oh the drama, the pathos, the tragedy! Somehow I've read all this before and guess who's back writing yet another farewell.....
I suggest everyone leave the light on because Kapt Lehmann has nine lives and has only used two or three. Somehow, when we least expect it I have this feeling there will be a large, spectacular release for SH5!
I learned from Ducimus that these farewells are great theater, but the people issuing the farewell are much more addicted than we are. Emergencies of life may temporarily detain them but they will be back with a vengeance!
So Kapt, I'll shoot you a salute but you'll excuse me if I hold the goodbye. Best wishes, sir!:salute:

And Tomi, the offer still stands. I told you I couldn't help out much back a few months ago because of RL issues, and this still is true today. I just don't have much time (I only am available every other week, and then still have other stuff too), but I'm still willing to give it a go, just at my own pace... this means no deadlines... and no guarantee it will be done. But we should still give it a try... And now that I no longer need to work on S3D it's easier for me...

Hello,
it´s a really sad message, but....very very thanx for your great work.

Well what can I say thats not already been said
Chance to log on here or anywhere has been limited for the last few months due to RL\family reasons and getting a chance today I log on to see this
I do feel a lil guilty having been away from the team for far too long and not being able to contribute to GWX4 for months
Salute to the GWX team for making a difficult decision which with all the work I had seen before departure couldnt have been easy and I feel for those who have toiled non stop
Lets hope something can be done with all the new work either in GWX3 or released for use in SH4
Has been an honour working with the team past and present
:salute:
Great to see you here BBW....saw you were on The Lair yesterday...you should have posted something for the guys.
You've been a big miss, nobody will ever say any other, but you weren't the sole reason mate, we all share a part of the responsibility for the eventual outcome.
I know I certainly felt it was an honour working with you and am confident those thoughts will be reciprocated amongst the guys.
Gotta go, Newcastle have just scored.
Don't be a stranger, your access is and always will remain valid....ya basum :DL:03:
Hey BBW! good to see you around - and you have no reason to feel guilty what so ever,

I just heard about this. The Subsim flag is flying at half-mast. For all the work and joy Grey Wolves brought, I salute you. :shucks:
To all thank you . Hope we all are in the light for knowing each ether
God, Did'nt know until the bad news I could be so much involved with GWX, Subsim, and with all of you modders that have dedicated so much of your time and life for such a great achievement as GWX... Thank you all GWX team..
I'm so down, I gave a leave to all my crew on board tonight...
mourning day, ordered Gross Amiral Donitz, flags midmast on all subs in Lorient pens for 3 days... And good so, because I don't know how I could have steered my sub after such beer drinking session that, if I am not careful, could have been duly reported in the KM archives...

You'll have to excuse me for not engaging in any form of an applause after such an eloquently written melodramatic epitaph; because I'm pretty sure that just as soon as a whole new generation of modders makes a breakthrough in SH5 in their own version of ye ole "pin point drop thread", you'll be back. Wouldn't it be a hoot if SH3/GWX turns out to be a better gameplay experience than SH5? Seeing the wild shots the devs took with U-Boat Missions, I know that we have a dev team that's not afraid to take some awfully scary chances in pursuit of excellence.
That's a two edged sword. While it opens the door to surprising super success, it does so on the edge of a very tall cliff which has no guard rail. Either the success or the failure will be spectacularly entertaining!
Dear GWX team, many many thanks for all that great work!!

...we are clearly no longer capable of executing our mission to develop GWX4. It is rather logical that parallel courses were eventually steered into in many ways......remember UBI's announcements for SH3 - only few of those things were realised at last.
However, many thanks for your efforts - GREAT JOB !
So long,

Don't forget your work was quite prominent in GWX Gold also.
I've no hesitation in thanking you on behalf of the team for the above and would end in wishing you all the best for the future http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/thumbsup.gif
Reality is a harsh master.
I'm only the more upset because the work I've seen you all do so far is absolutely top notch. I'm grateful to be able to enjoy it as-is, and won't complain about what hasn't come out. It's only sad to know you've put lots of work into it to see no end product. Been in that situation more times than I can count, and it always burns.
I haven't said "thanks" for GWX yet, so let me take that opportunity now. It's a beautiful example of what's possible when the right people are doing the right things for the right reasons.
Everyone knows real life takes priority. If you've chosen to prioritize real events in favor of games, you've always made the right choice.
I hope all is well, otherwise.

Well I've been lurking for a while, and this seems a good time to make a post.
I've only been using GWX for a relatively short time, but I can't imagine playing sh3 without it. It is easily the best, most complete mod I've seen for any game.
So to the team: Thanks for all you've given, and I wish you the best for the future.

Wow, didn't expect to see this when I decided to drop by the forums!
GWX team, thank you so very much for the hard work you put into your mods. GWX 3 was the most fun subsimming experience I ever had. I hope we haven't see the last of your work, but if we have, you have my sincerest gratitude.
This is a sad thing to read, but I understand you guys.
But I think that GWX4 would have been well received no matter what SH5 exactly offers. I was looking forward to pimping SH4 to the max with GWX4 and I'm not really considering SH5 a buy, yet.
But personal life comes first. I hope that your step back from modding gives you some of your time back that you have been missing lately :salute:

Thank you for all. With out you i would never loved SH3 to such an extent. All the best and who knows maybe we will meet again.
And if not the memory on Gwx will always remain.
Gwx 4 is not your it`s ubisoft loss with that the SH4 will gain new glory and with out it he is in the shadow of the Sh3 all thanks to you.
GOD bless you all!!!
I have nothing but praise and respect for the quality of your work and the willingness of the team to sacrifice so much of their time. Without you SH III would've been on shelves collecting dust a long, long time ago. It is the best mod I have ever seen and you can all be proud to be associated with it!
A big thanks to all of you!
I'm just reading this for the first time, and can't believe it! SH3 is still on my HD because of GWX and the work your team has done to perfect it. This is a real (but very understandable) disappointment. Real life can certainly suck sometimes, but what could we do?
I'm not giveing up the ship just yet. Take a well deserved break, regroup, get your real life affairs in order, and when SH5 arrives, mabey the boys will have a look at it. I'm pretty sure the out of the box project will need some adding too. Here's another thought. Mabey it's off the wall, but how about changing gears and giveing the Pacific Theater a shot? Am I desperately grasping at straws here? I guess I'm just going to miss the work the team has done for all of us here:cry: I really appreciate it guys. You're first class.

:salute:
Jaesen,
I think I may have you to thank for some of my first grey hairs so the feeling was at times mutual!
You know... it is always so much easier to remember difficulties... and harsh times... I've spent so much time stuck in those places for the days leading up to and following the closure of GWX4... just making myself sick.
Your post re-opened a grand series of memories for me...
*********************************
Most have no idea that when it was just me and Marhkimov... I got cold feet just prior to the release of TGW 1.0... and was afraid to release it. (I know its a stretch, but I frustrated Marhkimov too you see.:DL) Marhkimov gave me a rather swift kick in the pants and I subsequently released TGW. Following release, a bit ironically... Marhkimov got cold feet and left me standing there... but that's alright. His work was quite good and much of it remains in the final release of GWX.
I remember two angry Aussies chasing each other all over the GW forums poking each other in the eye for what might have been hours (or was it days?) ...determined to make me go bald... and I won't be more detailed... because for all the frustration involved at the time... I hope the two passionate artists in question can view it with the humor that I hold for the occasion now. That passion served the team and project well.
What I will remember best... and what I choose to take with me wherever I am... is the sense of teamwork and 'crew' shared by shipmates... that saw the pace of development firing on all cylinders for weeks on end! VOLUMES of messages, screenshots, and posts by all involved... as the build charged ahead at a dead run. It seemed as if no-one slept... and I certainly didn't. The location of GWX dev teamers and testing crewmen caused me to FEEL the world turning... one time zone would change from day to night... the next would awake... and the stream of messaging and data transference seemed to be endless... all at flank speed to hit the mark... to reach the finish line! It was surreal at times... an un-stoppable AVALANCHE of steady progress!!! Some days, all I could really do... was have a death-grip on the railing with one hand... and have my other hand keepin' me hat from flying off!
Thanks for the kind words Jaesen... and thinks for the time you spent working so hard with the team.:up::up:

Danke, Lehmann and the GWX crew for all your hard work and time (time, and yet more time) spent on it all!!!! You fixed SHIII as the best subsim in its day by a monumental margin as to be a proper paid add-on. I especially enjoyed your GWX Gold manual. A great read!
I have one question, please. Is it true that you have NO connection with Ubisoft with the development of SHV?? You see when I heard SHV was in dev, I had naturally expected that Ubi would've surely brought you into the fold of their ranks and that all the work done on GWX4 up to now had migrated naturally into the official development cycle..?
I hope that you got some sort of recognition or indeed anything from Ubisoft? Everybody knows that you helped boost Ubisoft's sales of SHIV as well as SHIII. I'm pretty sure that due to GWX's fame that a great many of us here bought SHIV with the expectation that GWX4 was surely going to be done at some point in the future. Again, more money for Ubisoft.
So if Ubi hasn't bothered to give you any recognition at all, then I'm not surprised the GWX engines have shut down with no fuel left in the tanks!
Good hunting and all the best in the future! :salute:

We have GWX dev team member Pablo to thank for our awesome manual. It is a historical document all on its own!
It is true that we have not had any official recognition by, or official connection to Ubisoft... apart from having been addicted to their Silent Hunter productions. Unofficially, I do however consider their lead game designer Dan Dimitrescu to be a long distance friend after having met him in Houston at the Subsim meet last year. (As does Jimbuna and a number of others on our team.)
It would be cool to see a nod to the Grey Wolves mod team in the credits to SHV... but I don't see how that could really ever happen. It may be that collectively Ubisoft and/or the Silent Hunter devs view us as having been obstacles to their efforts. In that light, why would they ever consider adding a mention in the credits?
At any rate, concerning my actual profession, I am doing almost exactly what I want to do... and a few short years from now... hopefully I'll be doing it in the air... which is exactly what I am aiming for. (My actual job will hopefully change slightly that is.:DL)
< Free advice to anyone listening: Never let your 'hobby' turn into 'work'... you'll end-up hating your hobby if you aren't careful. >
Heard the news a few days ago. Not been able to find the right words to express my gratitude for the work and attention to detail you all have put into the game.
You may say that the Grey Wolves project is finished. The work is over. But really you have inspired others. This has no time limit or sell by date.
I would not know where to start making a mod. Real life at the moment would only get in the way for me anyway. But you have taught me to question things. What if?........would it be possible? etc. And the modders have proven that nearly everything in the game is possible. We have new environments, sounds, ships, interiors, gameplay and more. Before I stumbled upon this forum, I bought the game (SH3) and accepted it for what it was. I didn't even know that a computer game could be modded.
I have read the heated arguements, the comments, not always positive and not always deserved. Sometimes it was hard to be a spectator. Like listening to the neighbours in the house next door fighting! I often thought 'Sh*t! It's just a game!' Forgive me, I was wrong. It was always more than that. The work, the hours, the research, the trial and error, the passion for the subject.........I was naive in thinking that it was just a 'game'. If I put so much energy into a project, I'd also shout and scream and let off steam to get my point across.
You have also taught me through the game more about the u-boat and the war, than I ever knew before.
You have given me a place to take time out from real life. You have given me a game of chess where I can blow up things:DL.
Thanks for everything and good luck to you all. Signing off:salute:

Its been a long time since i came here.
I just reloaded GWX 3 a few days ago, and found this post now.
It is a sad moment for me personally, because i can understand what it feels like when such a group ends their main project.
Thank you!
are the words i would like to give each one of the GWX crew members!
You made me like Uboats, wich i alwys viewed as invisible treacherous bastards.
You taught me the difference between a cruiser and a destroyer, and inspired me to read "German DDs of the 2nd World war".
To paint these ships, and to have a try at 3d modeling.
With GWX you created entrertainment, fun, but also inspired people like me to widen our horizon, learn, read, educate ourselves about this difficult subject of War and Weapons, Men and Lives.
GWX, to me, is just an awesome tip of an iceberg... it goes deeper than yall imagine.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
And please - what ever comes, just chill out and do not go away.
And my BEST wishes to you and your families!

I too wish to add my thanks and appreciation for the hard work and countless hours that the GWX team endured to provide SH3 excitement and the expectation of SH4 excitement.
I am currently playing SH3 with GWX 3.0 Gold as part of the Wolves At War game.

GWX, along with the neat tool of SH3 Commander, certainly has made my gaming experience so much richer. I appreciate that your decision to demoblilze the GWX 4.0 project team was not taken lightly and I respect and support your decision. In closing, my hat's off to the GWX team and I salute you!

Yes, thankyou so much for GWX as it is. It is possibly the best mod ever made for any game in my opinion, and the work that went into it is just incredible.
Even after SHV comes out, I can assure you GWX 3.0 will still be on my PC, and played with regularity.
Kudos to the entire team, thanks for making SH3 from a good game into the most excellent submarine simulator in the history of mankind.

awww Kpt Lehmann that was so heartbreaking your one for words have you ever thought of taking up a Dear aunt column in a newspaper or online even! :DL
Nah seriously GWX was (is) a great mod even though i started late in playing it, GWX 3 that is.
But for me i was personally blown away at what the GWX team did. Before that i was playing GW 1.1 or something which didn't stay on my hdd for to long as i went from game to game like i do. Recently i was tiring of SH4 thought what now oh I should try this GWX 3 out so i did and on my first patrol I came face to face with a British sub lurking outside lorient waiting to sink me i knew i was in for a hell of a ride. It so impressed me that i uploaded the mod to rapid share & Ive only done that to one other mod so yes gwx did a well done job.
GWX team probably did the right thing with SH5 in the making besides skipping SH4 gwx means maybe down the line SH5 GWX :hmmm: :)

Thank you for all the great work you did, I honestly think Ubi should hire you guys. Seriously.
SHIII was made unforgetable by you guys, and I send you my eternal gratitude.
I think, UBI Soft should be glad for all of your efforts too.
You kept many players playing the game - where the vanilla version would have been forgotton for some time, the GWX project kept so many people playing, looking for new releases and also kept them interested in the series as a whole.
So GWX practically was a great advertisement for upcoming SHs as well.
And if the Dev team watched this forum, I think they learned a lot about what this community is looking for in a sub simulation and took some if not many ideas from the GWX contents as well.
Many thanks to the GW team
SHIII_GW amazing mod was the main reason I learnt to play with manual targeting/ no map update 100% realism
I hope you will be back SH5

I wonder if, when the members of the GWX team have had enough fully deserved rest from modding, would any consider assisting in the TSWSM ?
We are specifically in need of more 3D modelling & texturing skills, and general unit conversion & damage modelling. This may seem a bit cheeky ...... but we have struggled with release dates all through the summer.
Will fully understand if the answer is no, but if you don't ask .....

Ah a sad day in modding history indeed when the GWX team is retired, but I have a feeling that the GWX team will return not to make SH4 a better subsim but perhaps to make SH5 a better subsim. Thank you Kapitan Lehmann and all of the GWX team for making SH3 the best subsim ever in terms of gameplay and realism. You are all truly dedicated to your craft (no pun intended) I hope that the GWX will in future, will rejoin to make another subsim as amazing as you did SH3. 21 Hand Salute for the GWX Team.

My original copy of SH3 was shelfware. I found Subsim when searching the web for a place to sell or trade it. Then I found the first "supermod". If you combine all of the other sims I've ever played and added up the hours, they would be less than half of the time I spent playing the GW mods.
Just wanted to offer my thanks for all the work the entire team did over the years. Myself and my kids got endless hours of enjoyment playing these mods. I even wrote and released Kids Mod (easy mode) for TGW1.1a way back in 2006 just for them, so they could play it.
The real value for me wasn't the time I spent with my kids playing a "war game". It was the lessons they learned about war while playing it. We really spent a lot of time talking about how terrible this war was. For me and probably many people, it was much more than just another simulator. It was a learning opportunity and a chance to to let the next generation know, don't ever let this happen again, it's up to you.
A special salute to you Kpt. Lehmann, for all your efforts and most importantly, for putting up with all the crap for so long. Don't know how you did it, but it really made the difference.

My friends,
Try not to be angry at us when considering all the things we 'could have done'... or 'should have done' during the development of GWX.
Angry? Rather I will eternally in debt with the GWX team for so many years of enjoyment thanks to your hard work!
In fact, I almost play exclusively at GWX 3.0 Gold...
SHIII+GWX 3.0 is a real thing.

Been playing SH3 since release, off and on over the years. Major lurker, first post here. Recently ( last 2 months) getting back into this, and the FIRST thing I did was find and enable the latest GWX - THEN started reading other posts and looking for other mods. My friends,
(This is going to hurt.)
~SALUTE!~

Kpt. Lehmann, and the whole GWX team: my heartfelt thanks for everything you've accomplished over those last years!
I remember very well modding dreadful SH2, switching to SH3, downloading, testing and combining different mods and not really being satisfied with it all and thinking of going bay to Aces of the Deep every time. But suddenly there was something there that changed it. Something I wouldn't have believed possible. Some people actually did what I thought to be too time-consuming and too hard to organize. A combined mod with practically everything that I was missing in stock SH3. And as if this wasn't enough it was developed further and new more interesting features were implemented every Christmas :)
So again: Thank you for the many glorious hours you let me spend in the GWX world instead of the real one and for all the grief you must've endured due to pressure and nagging from the community as well as people in your real lives, for the long hours of modding, testing, bitching, fighting and willing to make SH3 better than it was. It is really appreciated.
After the initial disappointment and letting this thread settle for a while I'm convinced that with SH5 on its way, it is all for the best this way. I believe it simply won't be worthwhile to put all this energy into this great project while all the work may be obsolete by early 2010. After all SH4 is just a vamped up SH3 with a few new features and SH5 will most likely become a completely new game where everything has to be started from scratch.
However I sincerely hope this has not been the last we ever heard of Kpt. Lehmann's GWX crew. If the past has told us anything since SH1 came around, it is that SH5 will surely need a lot of improvement and I can think of only one crew with one leader to accomplish that.
Best wishes to all of you. Get some well deserved rest, and a Christmas time for your real lives and hopefully till we meet again here! Thank you.
Just wanted to say thanks for the great mod. You made SHIII to what all the sizzle was about. The game engine itself is dated and the coding needs an overhaul so no sense flogging an old horse and it was a good idea for GWX to disband as you have done what you set out to do.
I will still play the game because of your work. I makes for an amazing experience that you don't soon forget. Well done guys!

An eloquent sign off.
My only regret is that I didn't take advantage of your great mod(s) earlier than I did. You can literally rest, assured that noone can think anything but the best of the work you and your team have done and that everyone wholeheartedly agrees with your reasoning.
My personal opinion is that you saved SH3 and that SH5 will have to use GWX as a baseplate from which to start. Anything less would be a gross mistake.
From a very grateful SHIII and SHIV player......thank you so much for your efforts. I can only hope that with the advent of SH5 the team can come together again at some point to do with that game what they do best.....improve it.:salute:

Hey guys it's been a while; SH5 brought me back here and I happened on this thread.
When you released GWX 1.0 the manual you guys made, came out a week before the official release. I was IMPRESSED and read it front to back in awe.
Then the mod came out and I rushed into grab it, the quality, execution and mood of the mod was unbelievable and I was left staring at the menu screen floored.
You guys did an amazing thing. It is the best mod I've seen for any game and it grew from the best game community I've ever had the pleasure of being apart of.
Thankyou.

Kpt. Lehmann,
I have this feeling that the Silent Hunter III GWX days was just a rehearsal for the eagerly awaited Silent Hunter V. Your passion and desire of the Silent Hunter franchise is embedded in your soul. Yes; the team for now has been disbanded, and yes for now your soul has been dragged North, South, East and West managing RL, expectations and time-lines for the Silent Hunter community, but Silent Hunter V will re-awaken and feed that beast inside you that is currently in hibernation mode.
It is destiny young jedi.
Kind Regards
Venatore ;)

THe GWX team, and GWX mod has kept me playing SHIII for many years. :salute:
What you and the team have done is MONUMENTAL in mods...and not just for SHIII but when compared to ALL mods that have been done over MANY genres (Counterstirke mod comes to mind). It is still my opinion that UBI should hire every one of you for SH5.
GWX kept me playing when SH4 was a flop (IMHO). I played SH4 for about 6 months and got so disgusted with it, I went back to GWX and never looked back.
UBI Romania will have a tough act to follow.... the expectations due to GWX are HIGH for SH5 (and it looks like it WILL be good). I just hope maybe they brought some of you on to help them out.
:salute: sir! Thank you and your team for all you have done!!!!! I am sad :wah::cry: but at the same time GREATFUL for the GWX team efforts... Enjoy your time off.... and get some well deserved game time in will ya?!

Thank you and your team for the hundreds of hours of enjoyment you've given us.
I'm still playing the GWX version of SH3 all these years later, with SH4 & the Uboat expansion gathering dust on the shelf.
If it's a measure of the esteem with which you are held, any joy that the official news of SH5 brought me has been lost by the news that you guys won't be there to work your magic on it in due course.
Your dedication and professionalism has been an inspiration. You are proof that all you do really need, is a few good men.

Just speaking for myself here... I have to say, that it really gets me in the heart to see so many members on this thread and others who have made their one and only post here at Subsim to say 'thanks.' I know for a fact that this is not lost on the rest of the GWX team... Thanks to all of you who have taken the time to pen your thoughts to us.

GWX isn't gone. I played it last nite till 3am. I couldn't sleep and didn't want to take anymore painkillers.
I fired up GWX and got so into my career I didn't feel any pain the rest of the nite.
If SILENT HUNTER V is only HALF as good as GWX , UBI will have a winner.

I've been away from Silent Hunter and games in general due to the aforementioned real life. I played early releases of the GWX mod and was impressed then. I've just re-installed SH3 and SH4 after updating to Windows 7 and I decided to check out the state of affairs mods wise for these two titles. When I came back onto the subsim forums (new user name, couldn't recall my old details!) I was again impressed at the solid community that exists around these sims, with mods such as GWX and RFB at the heart of things.
It is sad that the GWX dev team has had to call it a day but we all understand. The fact of the matter is that GWX is not dead, the mod will continue to be played and enjoyed for a long time to come and I for one am looking forward to installing version 3 and getting stuck in after a long time away.
Thanks for all your past efforts in creating a mod of such quality and all the best to each of you in whatever you get up to in the future.

I should be thanking you, old friend. You were with us during the first and hardest year. Much of your original soundwork remains unchanged in GWX for SH3 to this day.
Thank you for all the hard work you did for us... and though it may seem a small point of gratitude, please feel free to wear the GW/GWX dev sig anytime you wish if you choose to.

GWX is incredible, as are RFB, OM, NYGM and TM. So why not bury that particular war-axe and enjoy all these great supermods we have for what's basically a very mediocre game in its original form?
For my part, I'm just thanking the GWX crew for offering me one of the most intensive gaming experiences I've ever had. Pity that it had to stop, but hey, life goes on...

I might be late to the GWX mod but I can safely say after playing SH3 stock just for a couple of patrols that you guys improved dramatically on the original game. We are all lucky to have the results of your dedication and hard work to keep us interested until SH5's release and beyond.

The mod is like a classic book. It will always be around on the shelves and people will often go back to it time and time again....
have a merry.
I just read it today.
I want to tell you all two things.
At first I give you the biggest thanks I've never give in my life because you gave us the most wonderfull and the most serious present with the GWX series. The level of these mod was probably the greatest never seen before in any games.
And the second thing I want to tell you is that I'll play for years again before watching all of your wonderfull job and I'll discovered during a long time again the perfection of your incredible work.
Now you get right, simulator is not the real life and the real life wan't let us dream all the long we want...Since I discovered GWX I've probably lost 3 years of my life and it's not finished yet.
But I don't care, I'm subsimer now.
We became subsimers by you and your job, and we'll still mates because forever we are brothers in arm.
Thank you all and be happy.
God bless you all.

Even though you are now disbanded, I hope that the works you have completed in the past will still be available for future captains. Figuratively speaking, you took a blank canvas and produced a Rembrandt masterpiece. Go now...and rest. You've earned it.

I found out about this late... heck, I found out about GWX 4 at the same time as hearing that the GWX team was disbanding. In my not at all humble opinion, GWX has been the best thing for sub sims, vanilla SH leaves some jarring accuracy bugs and the alternative games are either arcade wall paper paste or require you to have attended real submarine training just to figure how to use the sonar.
GWX made you feel like you were the commander of a U-Boat, and clearly Ubisoft have realised this in what they are planning with SH5, the only regrets I have with the series is that they never took a leave out of Valve or Dice's book and hired you lot. I wish you all the best, and whilst I hope GWX5 isn't needed, if I hear that you are making it, then I will happily travel to mount doom and back for you guys.

I love the GWX Team. They gave me my dream of the U.S. Navy and now I'm trying to work my butt off to get into Annapolis to get my own submarine... Without these guys I would probably be a derelict student with no real goals in life. Ironic, as most parents saying video games make kids not want to do anything.
But, I can't be the only person who has the feeling that someones gonna "change" SH5 soon...

"They"? GWX had a few core members who were there the whole time, but a lot of talented people worked on the team at different stages. It wouldn't be that hard for someone to put a new and different team together. Well, it would, but that's what's really needed.
There are already brilliant supermods for SH4. All that would be required would be the people who could add that 'extra touch' - the harbors, the cool visual stuff, to be willing to do it. What's really needed is someone willing and able to coordinate it all. The talent has always been there. The hard part - the leadership - is all that's missing.

Participation by a GWX team would be great, but we've got a damned fine supermod in Lurker's Operation Monsun right now. I'm a week into a 1939 patrol in a Type IIC and it's as immersive and detailed as anything I've seen in SH3 yet.
Additional models, texture, realism and authenticity tweaks would always be welcome, but as far as the campaign goes, I defy anyone to beat the detail and scope Lurker has put into creating a 1939-1945 campaign for the U-bootwaffe. And now with conning tower emblems!

I completely agree - Op Monsun is fantastic to play. Lurker has done a wonderful job and kept abreast of the problems with continual updates. The only things I miss are the little things: proper harbor traffic, Kiel Canal stuff (actually WAC is better in that respect, having the historically correct bridges), the K-ships (blimps) and things like that.
The other big thing I miss is what SH3 Commander brings to the table. Those things require a good programmer, and the GWX team had one in Privateer. He was talking about making some of those things happen.

honestly? i bought SH4 only because i knew GWX team was going to mod it too, and still didn't touch the game (as all SH stock games s*ck) - only tried Op.Monsun mod to see that it lacks *that* feeling GWX 3.0 gave me.
It's a shame, a real loss, wish u good luck and tons of sunks, i was doubting to buy SH5 because of the DRM, and now i'm definitely not gonna even think abt it.
