View Full Version : [TEC] Has anyone else created a fictional boat?

Hi!

Just thought if someone else has also created his own 100 % fictional boat to the game, i.e. boat without a history? I don't know how but few days ago I got idea it could be fun to play with a boat with no real life counterpart. So, after editing submarine roster a bit, USS Pointer (SS-215) was launched. (Yep, I borrowed the ID number from Growler.)

Before first patrol in May 1942 I was a little bit sceptic if I would like that fictional boat at all. However, after few days on patrol, I have to say it's quite fun to play that way. With Porpoise, Haddock, Gabilan or other "real life boats" I often found myself thinking RL history of the boat when playing. With my very limited skills I can't build a mod for a release, but my hint is free... Maybe someone would like to get Eel or Walrus to the game... :hmm2:

Yeah, I've sort of had that same problem; I've been reading US Submarine Operations in World War II by Theodore Roscoe, and I can't help but think of my ship's actual patrol history. So when I got a new boat (Gato), I decided to rename it to a pet name of mines, and started creating a little of my own history :arrgh!:

There have been a few fantasy boats that I know of.

There's this one :

and this one:

and the USS Futurama:

Oh, and about that Operation Petticoat:

The 'Akakazi' (Bungo Pete) patrol in 'Single Missions' in either TMO or RSRDC use the USS Nerka from 'Run Silent Run Deep' movie (CO: Clark Gable, XO: Burt Lancaster). It can be done; I just haven't figured out how.

I would like to change my sub's name/number since I always seem to get either the GATO or BALAO when I get a new sub. What files do I need to change to make this simple swap?

Hello Rodger Dodger!

I suppose you mean you always get trasfer to USS Gato or USS Balao. (Not that you are always transferred to Gato- or Balao-class boat...)

First thing I want to say is that I don't know how to change boat's name/ID number after transfer, i.e. in the middle of your career. What you can do is to limit the possibilities of transfer to the boats you would like to have, even so that there will be just one possibility per class. But as I said, this have to be done before you get your transfer.

To delete or add boats to roster, go:

Silent Hunter/Data/Roster/American/Submarine

and choose the type you want to edit. For example by opening SSBalao you should find a list like this:

[UnitClass]
ClassName=SSBalao
UnitType=200
AppearanceDate=19430101
DisappearanceDate=19750612
DisplayName=US Balao
[Texture 1]
TextureName=data/Submarine/NSS_Balao/NSS_Balao_T01.tga
LightmapTextureName=data/Submarine/NSS_Balao/NSS_Balao_O01.tga
StartDate=19380101
EndDate=19440504
Frequency=1
[Texture 2]
TextureName=data/Submarine/NSS_Balao/NSS_Balao_T02.tga
LightmapTextureName=data/Submarine/NSS_Balao/NSS_Balao_O01.tga
StartDate=19440505
EndDate=19990711
Frequency=1

[Unit 1]
Name=USS Tigerfish (SS-354)
DOC=19430101
DOD=19990711

You see unit 1 on the list, USS Tigerfish (SS-354), that's my creation (ID number taken from Eel which was launched but never completed in real life). Your unit list would be a bit different with stock game boats listed on. By notepad you can edit the list as you like.

Three important notes! Units on the list have to be numbered in a clear row as [Unit 1], [Unit 2], [Unit 3] and so on, without any flaws or "jump overs" - otherwise the game doesn't understand it right. Be also precise with DOC and DOD values (first and last dates you can have that specific boat). And if you are using any mods with roster folder, be sure you make changes in the right place. (I use to edit both original and mod files as I'm not 100 % sure about Vista.)

And that's it. Easy to do, harder to explain. If you run into problems or found errors in notes I gave, don't hesitate to report/ask help.

John Wayne in Operation Pacific :yeah:

That was the one where John Wayne figured out the faulty exploder/firing pin in the Mk14 torpedo by dropping the nose of the torpedo from a crane. Gee, we could have lost the war without that guy! :haha: Actually, the methodology wasn't so far off (it just wasn't John Wayne).

I have the film but lost intrest after first 20 minutes (silly start...) and didn't watch it to the end. But maybe it's getting better later. Have to take it on the list again.
How about RSRD movie, someone has seen it for sure? Haven't been able to get a copy, just thinking is it any better? :hmm2:

That's right. All would have been lost without the Duke. :salute:

Now I know where they get that silly Destroyer siren sound...

'Run Silent, Run Deep' is the best WWII submarine movie ever made. On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give it a 12! :yeah: No stupid love interest junk, just good, clean WWII action. One of Clark Gable's best.

I finally had to break down and buy the DVD since I wore out my VHS tape from watching it so much.

Did we get 'off thread' here, or what? :rock:

Back on track . . .

From SSGato.cfg:

[UnitClass]
ClassName=SSGato
UnitType=200
AppearanceDate=19411101
DisappearanceDate=19721015
DisplayName=US Gato

.
.

[Unit 1]
Name=USS Drum (SS-228)
DOC=19411101
DOD=19460216

Since the program seems to choose [Unit 1] when getting a new boat, I could just change the name to 'USS Nerka (SS-228)', right? Much apologies. Above, I said I always got the 'Gato', actually I usually get the 'Drum'. Could be because the 'Drum' is available two months earlier?

[Unit 4]
Name=USS Gato (SS-212)
DOC=19411231
DOD=19600401

This is from My Documents\SH4\data\cfg\playersettings.cfg : (presently I'm on a Sargo Class)

What would happen if I choose to get a new boat (re-writing this file), then stop the game and change the 'UnitName' , and start the game up again? Anybody try this?
