On behalf of the entire GWX Mod Team, I am pleased to announce our 'Gold' release...

GWX version 3.0!!!

The primary objective of this release has been to consolidate all official GWX files and fixes released to date for SH3.

Before today, for a full and correct GWX installation, you had to first download GWX 2.0, then download GWX 2.1, and finally download the fixes released by bigboywooly on top of it all.

Now before getting all upset that we haven't jam-packed it with tons of new features... we have added a few. (Watching you all speculate over the last weeks... its been hard to keep silent.)

Features:

First and foremost... something I consider to be a MAJOR breakthrough in SH3 environmental work. The environmental files for the GWX 16 kilometer atmosphere mod have been overhauled with the critical assistance of Subsim forum member "Onelifecrisis." Most of you are familiar with his previous releases adjusting the Sh3 environmental files, and his user interface modifications. OLC was the first that I am aware of to definitively remove the obnoxious horizon defect in currently available 16 km environments... In GWX 3.0 we have blended elements of our own work that we wanted to retain... with his awesome work.

In my opinion, we've gotten the best of both worlds.

HOWEVER! What you may not be aware of is that he has effectively REMOVED THE POLYGON effect from the waves present in ALL other environmental mods for SH3 currently available...

Before OLC's work:

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f117/KptLehmann/polygonal.jpg

... and AFTER OLC's modification with GWX 3.0! REDUCED POLYGON EFFECT with certain light angles... giving us water that is far closer to SH4 than any other arrangement currently available for SH3.

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f117/KptLehmann/NewWater4.jpg
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f117/KptLehmann/NewWater2.jpg

Additionally, (with the control-room only) when you dive or ascend, the interior angle view changes to match the angle of ascent or decent! Special thanks to Anvart and Vickers03.

I hope you will understand that our crew is very tired... and being Christmas Eve... it is time for family, friends, and a bit of quiet peace.

Please be patient with us as we upload the GWX 3.0 files to more locations and media types for further availability over the coming days. We know the website must be updated. ;) Just give us a few days to do what we know we need to do.

Guys, please do not expect rapid or consistent user support on Christmas Day.

GWX 3.0 TOTALLY replaces all previous GWX builds which are no longer supported.

GWX 3.0 MUST be installed over a fresh-clean installation of SH3 patched to version 1.4b.

GWX 3.0 MAY NOT be installed over previous versions of GWX.

Merry Christmas Grey Wolves!!!

SH3 Commander Users NOTE! It will be a bit before we are able to release updated SH3 Commander Cfg files to make GWX fully compatible with that program. In the meantime you may use the Cfg files from GWX 2.1 available below. HOWEVER, PLEASE ENSURE that you run SH3 Commander WITHOUT the 'Sabotage and Malfunctions' option enabled.

You can use the 2.1 cfgs for SH3commander for now but dont enable malfunctions and sabotage
There may be a need for new cfgs as a dat chaged that uses those functions

Will keep you going in the meantime

Well, I've downloaded, haven't installed yet. My thanks to the GWX team for the hard work, and the excellent timing (at least I got one xmas present I wanted this year.)

I'm also downloading the torrent, and will leave it up to seed for at least the next week or so. Unless I can figure out how to seed the files I have already (don't know if they're the "same" as the torrented files.)

BZ to all the GW leadership and all hands who worked on this outstanding project. Now I am awaiting the SH3 Commander updates as stated on page 47 of the manual. I dare not (or am I wrong) start this up until then? If I wish to use SH3 Commander that is. I have 3.1 ready to go with all grammophone records loaded, full load of fuel, torps, food, Beck's to celebrate our first "kill", water, and all hands eager and waiting to give those Brit's a bloody nose. I just wish that the photo of one Penolope Grey is real and possible made for use in the crew galley or perhaps as a good luck photo in the tropedo room. Karl say's he is conflicted over either using Sara Silverman or Penolope's..... While the XO feels Sara should be in the radio room and Penelope overlooking him from above his "rack" for those long nights sailing to op areas.

I as captain is just upset as I bet that damm thing is a real Cuban and cannot stop thinking of a possible port call after the Brits surrender, and keeping that bottle of fine French Champagne I liberated for the occassion out of harms way and the crews hands.

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and more thanks to all the GWX team and leadership for this wonderful Christmas present!

I do have mixed feelings, though - I've been enjoying GWX 2.1 so much I hate to leave my current career, but the promise of GWX 3.0 is just too much! It was an easy download, and from what I see above, an easy install, so here goes.

Thanks again, and "God rest ye weary Gentlemen (and ladies)"!

You guys rule! Thanks for the SH3 commander answer (and thanks to BBWooly too!)

Question about the SH3 Commander files and the newer Winzip. whenever I try and unzip them using file/folder structure it just creates a new folder in my SH3 commander/cfg folder (called GWX_2.1_Cfg_4_SH3Cmdr3.0) instead of installing the files where they should be. How do you install the files (without having to manually unzip each file into each folder?). When I click "Extract" I have the "All files/folders in current folder" button selected and "open Explorer window" and "overwrite exsisting files" checked as well as the SH3 Commander\Cfg folder highlighted.

Damn this new Winzip.... you would think I was a n00b with this crap....I must be missing something simple here.

thanks!

Kpt. Lehmann
12-25-08, 03:51 PM
Faamecanic,

I recommend DL'ing and installing 7zip. It seems much easier to use IMHO.

Here is their home-page. (Free download)

Faamecanic

Thanks Kpt. I have always used WINZIP because it was easy.... just goes to show that when change happens to "help" the user it always mucks things up (every new release of MS Office has me cursing "Daddy" Gates for "helping").

EDIT: I must be having a BAD blonde moment ..... 7zip does the same thing. The Readme says to unzip the entire archieve to the SH3 Commander\Cfg folder. I do that and all it does is create the above folder (GWX_2.1_Cfg_4_SH3Cmdr3.0) in the Cfg folder. I guess I will just have to manually extract the files.... what a PITA.

Fantastic! I really had the impression that GWX for SH3 was dead and work was only done on the new GWX for SH4. I'm glad I was mistaken.

Thanks a lot again. This mod is absolutely the best thing ever to happen to a simulation game. You're GREAT :up:

Merry Christmas and have some nice holidays and a happy new year. You've earned it.

As We correct the files for Commander,
I'll look at makeing the placement of the files easier.
Maybe a small installer much like the installer for GWX 3?

Then you'd need no program to decompress the files.
And you'd just select where you want the files to be placed.
Suggestions?

As We correct the files for Commander,
I'll look at makeing the placement of the files easier.
Maybe a small installer much like the installer for GWX 3?

Then you'd need no program to decompress the files.
And you'd just select where you want the files to be placed.
Suggestions?

Very cool mate. Truly the 'extra mile.'

Long time no see, Woof1701!

Merry Christmas to you too, mate!:sunny:

Each build of the installer takes just over an hour.
Then testing it adds another hour or so.

Then adjustments to the code, build again, test, etc.

I went to the greatest lenghts to insure this installer was as flawless
as I could get it in the time allowed.

To see that everyone is happy with it at this point
makes my Christmas Day!!

Yes, just follow the download links on the first post and you will be able to DL the manual by itself. Look at "Appendix E" for the change log.

However, be advised that though earlier versions of GWX may remain available for download, only version 3.0 will be actively supported by the GWX Mod Team as it totally replaces our previous works.

I had a problem downloading v3.0, and I was wondering if anyone knows what I did wrong. I had an original v1.4 unmodded version installed, (although I had done a couple of missions) and I downloaded the bins, uninstalled the game, re-installed and patched to 1.4, and then tried to run the .exe and got the following message:the gwx 3[1]-7bin could not be located Please insert the disk and try again. or something to that effect. I downloaded all of the bins into the file that populated when I began to save the download, and this bin file 3-7 is saved into that file. I am running nt. Will I have to uninstall everything, re-install the game and 1.4 patch and start again? I know very little about either computers or modding, and if someone could help I would greatly appreciated it.

Yeah bin 7 is named as the rest, I just downloaded them all, should I maybe try to re-download it? I did do that and recognized the file was there and asked me if I wanted to save the new file anyway. I did not download the MD5 program is that my problem?

If you download the md5 and hashchecker programs it will compare all 7 bins and exe against the hashs of the origianal for corruption

Try delete both bin 7s you have and re d\l then run the hash checker

Just one quick question, any time frame for the SH3 Commander cfg? And is the "Sabbotage and Malfunction" option the only thing that needs to disabled for compatibility??

Yes, the "Sabbotage and Malfunction" option is the only thing that needs to disabled for compatibility.

Mikhayl's mod only changes the zon files for the Player Subs.

As I go through the Commander files,
I'll watch for anything that may affect this mod.
But since it's an added zone?
it should not affect anything.

And haveing a look?
There are no random or sabotage settings that affect the zon file.

What a pity!!
As the zon file is a critical file?

A question about the hydrophones-in the past all other ambient noises have been cut out when you went to the hydrophone station. After this install however I can hear them all (crew coughing, wind blowing, waves lapping), making it very hard to hear any other ships on the 'phones, even at moderate ranges. Is this a feature of 3.0, or a bug, or a quirk of my system? I haven't run SH3 on this particular machine (Vista 32 bit) until now.

I also get a weird visual bug when I dip just below the surface and peer up at a ship-I'll see a lot of bubbles wafting into the sky...

Just as a quick aside, something weird is happening here....

...every time I get stuck in with a new patrol (I keep coming back to it over weeks and months sometimes) some clever so-and-so goes and releases a new and more flashy must have mod requiring me to re-learn how to install this game and all of its components. :D

My crew always seem to have it easy; we never get past '41 before a new ubermod appears.
As the captain of U-something-or-other, I find all this quite interesting, but ships don't sink themselves, you know! The crew are quite grateful for all this time in dock, though I rather think that even the local tarts are sick of the sight of them by now; they've fairly worn a path from the barracks to the 'velvet palace' that even a blind man could follow.

Still, at least they're not getting into any other trouble, not like last year... It was good we left on patrol the next day. The tale of the cork screw and the pound of warm brie is not one our chief engineer will live down any time soon. He claims to know nothing and when pressed on the issue, he skulks back to his diesels, muttering about a demonstration of oil pressure and gaskets. Suffice to say, there is at least one madam who's hospitality was sorely infringed upon, and marked by a desultory withdrawal to the boat, we have not been invited back.

Assuming my men have enough strength left with which to fight a war after their arduous tour of duty with the local girls, I shall be pleased to use whatever means our dedicated scientists have contrived, in order to stick it to ze englanders and deprive them of their breakfast tea, eh? Soon the channel will run brown with all of your sunken tea leaves, then what will you do Tommy?!

All the files needed in those areas are in the optional mods folder already.
Enable the optional mods with JSGME then Commander does not need
those files.

The flotilla is the Med skins for Aircraft
The U-boat is the playerVIIC/41

If We find this is a problem,
I can always redo things.

If you are using SH3Cmdr, then it is best to manually move the optional mods out of JSGME and directly into SH3Cmdr.

Move the skins mod to "\SH3 Commander\Flotilla\907\" and the VIIC/41 U-boat mod to "\SH3 Commander\U-boat\VIIC41". Just from the data folder on (ie "\SH3 Commander\Flotilla\907\data\etc").

Then you can simply forget about the mods and let SH3Cmdr worry about when to apply them - if you have the tools, you might as well get the best out of them. ;)

Hello GWX3-Team,

first: Thank you for your great job and the time you spent for it.

currently I try to adapt racerboys exhaust smoke mods to GWX3. because of that I had to analyse with S3D, which changes you applied to the .val files of the submarines.

during my analysis I found one oddity in NSS_Uboat9c.val:

37: FastParticleGenerator
BitmapParticles[0]
Creation/Rate = 2,522337E-42

For other Submarines, this value is set to 300 or 1000 or similar....

Did that happen by intention or accidently?

greetings,
h.sie

You're confusing two different problems. The problem shown in your screen is the old ship wake glitch - nothing to do with the environment, and not what KL was talking about when he said "polygon problem" (although his screenshot does confuse things somewhat because it actually shows both glitches).

Only one modder has ever claimed to have fixed the ship wake glitch, and when I tested that fix it didn't work for me... so there's no fix AFAIK.

Yeah, I know, but that first shot also shows the ship wake glitch - and none of the other shots do. Before = ship wake glitch, after = no ship wake glitch. I think that's why Bat thought my work was supposed to fix the ship wake glitch.

Well I was extremely pleased with the environments, OLC. Personally I think it looks at least as good as the SH4 stuff (except the sun things which are too stunning in SH4)
The Atlantic storms make me shiver, excellent!

but I have the same tiny sun now in SH3/GWX3.0 which I also got after installing your environmental mod over SH3/GWX2.1

Is that fixable or is it graphics card-dependant?

Oh and one for the team: I installed the old free camera for the bridge and conning tower mod which I like so much, it seems ok but I wondered how it will mess with GWX3.0, or should it be compatible-ish? (SB_Cameras_mod-SH3)

Yes that is correct OLC. It was my misinterpretation of the screenshots. It has been made clear. Only thing now is when I start a New Campaign (Sept 39) as 7th/13th Flotilla I keep getting "Base was changed to Kiel". I am sure there is a fix for this somewhere. If someone can guide me to the download it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks OLC & Kpt Lehmann for all your help.

I guess the reason you did not include the lifeboat mod with GWX is that it conflicts with Enhanced Damage Effects?

Could anyone explain what it exactly effects? Do I lose oil spills or is it something deeper and more significant.

I'm not sure I understand your question but I'll try to answer it.

The only way to alter the shape of the polygons themselves is to start changing wave shapes, like PT did in his water mod. But that affects sensors, physics... all sorts of things. For GWX3 I didn't alter the polygons at all, I just brightened the water so that the contrast between the bright polygons and the water colour "underneath" them is much less. The end result is that the polygons are technically still there but you can hardly see/notice them.

Greetings all.

I'm hoping someone out there can help me.

Let me start by saying I am brand new to SH3 so I am not familiar with all mods, mod organizers, etc so please keep any explanations simple. :88)

I have the SH3 disk with ver 1.4. Last week I installed the program and GWX 2.0 without any problem. Today I removed SH3 through Control Panel and all related files I could find. I have reinstalled SH3 from the disk and downloaded all GWX 3.0 files. When I attempt to install GWX I get an error ... 'Modifications installed via JSGME were found. Please disable all mods before continuing.'

I'm confused. I've deleted all files to attempt a fresh install. I wouldnt think there would be any mods present. I assume there are some files leftover but I don't know what they would be.

Any suggestions????

By the way, this SH community is very impressive. Reminds me of the days I was a hardcore Falcon 3.0 guy. I'll keep searching through the forums but I greatly appreciate any help.

Greetings headbang -
First thing that comes to mind is the SH3 folder in My Documents (XP) or Documents (Vista). Did you delete that one? :hmm:

Thanks for the reply. I think I have it taken care of. I found a Mods folder within the SH3 folder. I removed that and GWX seemed to install fine.

Thanks,
Headbang

and not what KL was talking about when he said "polygon problem"

hello olc, the last days i was trying to find from where these 'polygons' are altered but i finally... give up ! in fact , i think they are very....:damn:
so,can you tell me where are they located please?

bye
I'm not sure I understand your question but I'll try to answer it.

The only way to alter the shape of the polygons themselves is to start changing wave shapes, like PT did in his water mod. But that affects sensors, physics... all sorts of things. For GWX3 I didn't alter the polygons at all, I just brightened the water so that the contrast between the bright polygons and the water colour "underneath" them is much less. The end result is that the polygons are technically still there but you can hardly see/notice them.

yes ,i understand that you did that but i am asking where are located the relevant lines that adjusting these polygons and ,basicaly, i am more interesting in which lines adjust the COLOUR of these polygons ( i made a dozen of new waters but they ALWAYS there , i switced off all the reflections and there are still there , if only i knew where they hiding ...i will totaly switched them off)

bye

First I wish all of you happy holidays and congratulate you on you're new supermod edition.
The water textures are great!

BUT....
The polygons are still visible with GWX 3.Maybe not so often and clear as on the first photo in the first post (named before) ,but the are there.:damn:
Is it posible that on of the following mods triggers the polygons reapear:

ANZACMICKS DAMAGE IMMERSION
LifeBoats&Debris_v3B
Rowers_for_LifeBoats&Debris_v3B
GWX_ships_Buoyance&draught_mod

And secondly, something is wrong with the face/hands/shirts contrast at night on the tower watch crew.
The faces are almost black and the hands/shirts are to bright.

Loving GWX since 2.0

Cheers

P.S. If there are any wrong spelling, sorry for my english

Alright.

The water is coloured by two colour entries in the envcolor.dat files. They are called WaterLightColor and WaterDarkColor. The former determines the colour of the water when viewed at a shallow angle (camera looking toward the horizon) and the latter determines the colour of the water when viewed from a steep angle (camera pointing straight down at the water). The fresnel coefficient and coefficient multipliers in scene.dat will "bias" the colour e.g. a high fresnel value will mean you see more of the WaterDarkColor and less of the WaterLightColour. The scale of the water bumpmap in scene.dat will determine the size and shape of the water "ripples" (each of which tends to show the WaterLightColor on one side and the WaterDarkColor on the other side, at intermediate camera angles). Note that by "ripples" I am not talking about polygons. I'm getting to that.

Laid over the water is a reflection map. The sky reflection is a TGA stored in the skycolor.dat files and the ship/cloud/particle/etc reflections are added to that. Then the whole reflective layer is adjusted in brightness by various scene.dat settings (e.g. reflection bias) then distorted by the same bumpmap which gives the "ripples" mentioned above, then finally the reflective layer is "moulded" over the waves. The transparency of the reflective layer is determined by the angle of each water polygon and by the fresnel and normal settings in scene.dat. If the reflective layer is partially (or fully) transparent on a given polygon, then the LightWaterColor and DarkWaterColor will show through the reflective layer on that polygon. If both of those colours are much darker than the reflective layer, then you'll get the "polygon problem" which is where one polygon is very reflective (bright) and another polygon right next to it is not reflective (dark).

End of questions.
Or, more correctly, I suppose I should say: end of answers. Good luck.

ohhh,....that was too much for me !! i think i got the picture olc ....meaning that i will have to take it as it is and we have to live with these 'polygons' . very compicated for my knowledge but ,anyway, thank you for the info

I love it! I tried to download it at the local city library, and it tells me at least 2 hours for the first part, and at least 20 hours for the full one from BTS, and I'm limited to 1-hour sessions:damn: . So I come to the university library and it tells me 3 minutes for the first part, so I cancel it and download the whole thing in 20 minutes!

WOOHOO!

Now I have to take it home and load it up, and spend New Year's day playing!
