I've just DL'd and installed the GWX 2.0 mod (excellent, thanks for all the effort). The addition of the Kiel canal is a bonus. I utilized the automatic plotted course to get through the canal but noted that TC drops to 1 at numerous points(and can't be increased for periods) making it as long if not longer, timewise, to go through the canal as opposed to going around via Norway etc. I'm not using high TC (16 max).
Am I missing something with regard to using the canal or is the TC dropping out unavoidable and babysitting my boat through the transit necessary?

I think u have to change TC settings in sh3comander to get as quickly as possible through the channel. As example TC for near land is 4 by default and ure almost any time in that condition using the channel. When i use the channel i save the game, quit, change to custom tc settings in sh3com and continue. When im through i do the same and restore tcs back to my standard settings

Use SH3commander to alter land proximity settings
GWX by default should be 128 anyway
If not using SH3commander you can alter the main.cfg in data\Cfg

It drops to 1 as either spotted an aircraft ( no watch officer means no verbal shout ) or very close to land

The trick with the Kiel out is to set the route before making any movement at all

If you're using SH3 Cmdr I'd suggest not increasing the land proximity TC by too much. I have it set to 64. You'll know that it's set too high if the game starts to lag.
