I just wanted to formely introduce myself to you all as I have just recently signed up.
Just to be brief here,I have played SHIII since its release and would consider myself at an intermediate level of knowledge concerning uboat warfare in general, but what I AM new to,is SHIII modding :-? .I am probably the only English wolf in here also hehe.
I have installed a few basic mods quite recently but nothing quite dramatic yet, basically they are a few visual tweaks like improved smoke, new emblems etc.I probably wont be installing anything too complex just yet as I am in the middle of a campaign at the moment, and dont want the potential to ruin it.
Any guidance as to the recommended mods I should get at this point that will improve my campaign without causing problems would be massively appreciated.I also appreciate the list of mods is quite large, but a few important ones would be great
Well, guess I had better get back to my HUGE voyage towards the port of spain :nope:
Goodbye for now.

Welcome to Subsim.
You are not the only English Wolf here.
Have a read of this : http://rapidshare.com/files/74399658/GWX_Manual_V2.04.pdf
Sorry it's not the most current version of the manual for GWX 2.1, I can't seem to find a mirror for it at the moment, however, this is version 2.04 and will give you a decent idea about what GWX is.
Edit - here's the latest copy - http://rapidshare.com/files/135518270/Manual_V2.1.pdf.html

Wellcome Paul!
Don't forget install all the mods in port. Try the "big" mods (NGYM, GWX, WAC,...) Next, you can try other compatible goodies (new ships, new skins, visual mods) on top.
Yes welcome Paul, basically what Coronas is saying is jump off the deep end!

Welcome aboard. Paul.
There are quite a few English Kaleuns amongst us.
As far as Mods are concerned, the best advice is to go for GWX2.1, or another of the supermods a.s.a.p. but if you want to complete your current campaign and still enhance the experience, you can do quite a bit with JSGME and "smaller" mods - provided you remember to install them between missions ( i.e. when you're in port ) and, if you use SH3 Commander, you ensure that you've rolled it back.
To be totally safe, the no-go areas are those mods which actually alter the scripted campaign(s) or the actual "guts" of the game. If you're in base and have rolled back SH3 Commander, you can safely install "eye-candy" mods and sound and music mods.
Perhaps the best way to explain it is that it's fairly safe to change files whiuch are essentially generic and not part of the actual gameplay. So you can use sub-skins, water-stream, torpedo damage, lifeboats, etc. plus any of the sound and music mods you like. Of course, you're looking at the versions for stock SH3 1.4b. Such has been the impact of GWX 2.1 and other supermods that the older mods for the stock game can be hard to find. There's a list of mods on this site. It's a great place to start.
I'd suggest:
a good music mod - there are a few to choose from
loading your gramophone with good tracks - Jimbuna's collections rock.
A good text message mod - depends on how many radio messages you like to receive
Torpedo Damage Final- big holes in ships!
Any number of Racerboys mods for SH3 1.4b
Sobers 3-d waves - a personal favourite.
Any of Fubar's sub skins, or any other skin you fancy.
A uniform mod ( there were 2 I recall )
Any interface mod which gives you load-screens etc.
They all add to the immersion. Then, when you get to the supermod of your choice - Oh boy! A whole new experience. Enjoy!

Hello dude and welcome aboard!
Also If you need SH3 Commander click on my Filefront download link and look under JScones Work for the files.
One is an EXE file which is the installer and the other is a zip file which you use to extract directly into the SH3 commander folder as a patch.
Third file is the SH3 Patrol Log editor program as a addon to SH3 Commander. This addon gives you the option to edit you logs as a Captain would in his shiplog book.
Also I have abunch of skins for you to test if you find one you like by clicking on the big sig below.
Happy hunting dude.

I dont know where to start :o
Many thanks to the friendly welcomes from you all,I have a positive feeling this is going to be a good place to hang out in once in a while.
I have a strong inclination to leave most of the mods until I have finished my campaign,in other words until I am sunk/destroyed etc.
I shall give you a rough list of my currently installed mods I have at the moment, which have been installed for a while now.
*dials mod (removes black background from the engineer reports)
*high res moon
*navigation map (applies a sort of paper texture to the navigation map)
*wake mod (changes the wake texture)
*officer icon mod (removes portrait and instead provides an image of the station the officer normally occupies) ,I dont really like this one much, and would prefer more realistic portraits
*red night map ,that one is yours Gairith, and I like it.
*improved smoke (by Church),again a great improvement over the lame default smoke
*Moosemeasure's map tool ,basically allows accurate measuring at a given scale. This is an important point I think,as I dont know if any of you suffer terrible performance issues at close scales on the map?.Other than that,my system is powerful enough.
*periscope and UZO mod , this one removes the silly border from around the PS and UZO ,and leaves you with a nice black empty space, just as if your eyeball was pressed right upto the eyepiece
*Emblems mod , again,Church did these, and I like some of em,personal fav is the shark,I love sharks, and like to emulate them as much as possible,ie,silent, and hit hard!
*gramophone mod , adds a few era specific titles, like the classic tipperary LOL,perfect for when I have just sunk one of my own ships LOL.Having said that,it is rare I use the GP,unless I am bored and waiting for the bloody weather to clear!.
*Flag mod , improved flag textures, including the very important Bismarck deck swastikas,an absence of which seems totally ludicrous to me,unless you are German in Germany of course,as openly displaying them can cause quite an upset I believe.
*sound environment mod , adds new sounds to the wind, the deck gun (includes a nice shell being loaded and a final "los" , very immersive for DG battles! :arrgh!: ,and also the PS raise and lower sound is improved, again, sounds great I think.
*VII texture mod , adds a ripple texture to the hull.I have not had the chance to see this mod working as I am in a IXC at the moment.
*uniform mod , basically adds an eagle/swas to the pocket of all officers (nice little touch) , and improves the rain gear somewhat with the addition of...gloves! haha.:rotfl:
And there you have it.
Before I go,can anyone post me a link to where I might find a good instrument mod?,I have seen a few images in here of much improved dials, and would like them,I also noticed an EXCELLENT Alberich mod the other day too, which I am very interested in as I just installed it to my vessel the other day, actually seeing it would be nice.
Right, many thanks, and see you all soon!

You might want to give a shot to Thomsen's Sound Pack V3, and the V3.1 and V3.2 updates. Sound is what really gives imersion to this game. It's about 400mb download and over 10.000 sound files, also adding some sounds that the original game don't have, for some events. To download it, just click at my signature!
Oh, by the way, welcome aboard. This will be the best and most friendly community you'll ever be part of!

Thanks for that Mr.Thomsen.
You say the files are about 400MB?.That will take approx 10 years on a dial up connection,no? :damn:
I will give it a try though,as I DO use download accelerator,so I may be able to resume the dl if it fails half way through.
You know,I built this damn system of mine, with some nice hardware I might add,why the hell did I have to include a modem! :damn:
*wish I had broadband, after all this time, and i'm still dialling up* :nope:
Anyhow,thanks mate.

And then the bum never even thanked me.

Welcome aboard! Yes, North England has a great mix of anglo-viking ancestry. And a great passion for cameraderie, adventure and to die fighting... a perfect mix for the intrepid U-boat captain!
We hope your stay here is a long and pleasurable one. There's a great community here and loads of mods to try out. We use GWX, as it covers a lot of things, but there's still a few extra bits-n-bobs we add it to spice it up even further. In any case, SH3 is a great game and there are a lot of really excellent mods available to let you customise the game the way you want it.
Once again, welcome! :yep:

Jeez, are you really still using dial-up?
LoL... I thought that those conections didn't even existed anymore, specially in england, a fine country.
Here in Brazil, a third-class country, I have a 12 (yes, twelve) megabits per second conection and I only pay like 30 dollars per month for it...
Are you seeing what I meant about this community? Everybody here cares for its brothers, it's all a big family.

I cant emphasize enough how great you lot are,no bull****,no politics,no nonesense, just plain old naval butchery!
Thanks all for the much needed comeraderie also,a VERY rare thing to find in England and the UK in general these days,so its even more of a pleasure to hang out with folk from far off lands.
Mr Thomsen, dont be fooled my friend,England is no longer the fine power she once was, with tits like Brown and his boyfriends all licking each other's a**e,I would even eat s**t for the chance to come and visit countries like yours,at least you would probably get more respect and better thought of
No wonder a lot of the diehard ex-Nazi's sought refuge in some S.American countries.
