View Full Version : Queston about stock ships

Hi guys,
Just been thinking...
Over the years I've read how many of the stock ships aren't at all realistic, or modelled badly, wrong damage etc. etc.
Well, given the amount of excellent modder's ships being released would it be an idea to disable those odd few stock ships that aren't very good?
For example, I've heard many criticisms of the C3 cargo, often being described as having the 'wrong shape, too tall etc. etc.' When you see it in a convoy compared to the excellent ships in the 'Community Ships' mod and the equally excellent ships by Iambecomelife, it really does stand out as a bit of a white elephant!
Given how many great ships are now available with more on the way (again IABL's superb merchant mod springs to mind), would we really miss the odd stock one for added realism? :hmm: Or would (could) they need to be replaced with a similar vessel because of the scripting (convoys, routes etc.) ?
Just a thought.
I was wondering what others views are on this?
Cheers all!

PS - Damn, just realised I typed the subject as 'Queston' instead of 'Question' and its too late to change it.... I can usually spell fine, honest!

lol ok
Yes you can replace any ship you want
PROVIDING
It is of the same type and speed ( you can replace types but thats a sh1t load of work
Ok so the NKC3 does MaxSpeed=16.5 so you will need a ship that can go that speed or faster
Anyless and you usually get a CTD ( not always ) when the ship is close to you and trying to go that speed
Make a back of your campaign files
Open the Campaign.RND and SCR in Notepad
And use the replace function
Class=C3Cargo replace with ( lets say ) with Class=KF
The NKF is from the community ships mod and MaxSpeed=22
All you have to do then is make sure all countries that have the C3 also have the KF

The C3 may look primitive compared to newer models, but its the only C3 we have right now.
...the excellent ships in the 'Community Ships'...
Funny thing that. Jim collected those from different sources, most of them excellent models. But the 'NKC4' not only has the wrong displacement, but doesn't look anything like a real C4.

Thanks for the replies guys,
ok Steve, ONE ship in the bunch isn't quite right  but the rest, when compared to stock are so much better.
By the way, do they have to shoot you now for showing that photograph with the warning attached :p, some of those veterans can still hold a grudge!
Thanks BBW, in the absence of a replacement for the C3 I may play around with this and see what results I get (no doubt resulting in a re-install :o).
As I said though, just an idea.
Cheers!

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a325/SailorSteve/C4.jpgthis is probably a converted Army transport...converted from the hull of a C-4...if you look the shape of the hull, you will notice the similarity of the one in the upper picture (same bow/stern shape)

I completely agree. My only point is that things aren't always perfect. I only wish they were.

You could well be right. I took it from one of many pictures of C-4s at NavSource. They only have one picture of a cargo version, as only one was aquired by the navy. I can't find any other pictures of non-troopship C-4s. Anyway, here is Marine Fiddler:

You're 100% right about some of the stock ships - one of the interesting things about the game has been the variations in stock merchant quality. They range from excellent (Tramp Steamer, Victory Cargo, Small Tanker) to adequate (T-3) to awkward (C-3). My guess is that the cruder-looking ships may have been rushed b/c of a lack of development time.
I would like to try remodeling several of the ships for sure - especially the T-2 tanker, C-2, C-3, and the Liberty Ship. I made a half-hearted try at the C-2 that did not go very well - maybe in a couple of months I'll get it done. :ping:

FYI guys I have almost finished a replacement model for the T-2 tanker. Let me know if you want to beta test (will be released before the MFM).
Thanks

Now THAT's got me all excited! I remember when the stock T-2 model was the only medium tanker we had. First several of us complained that it was an American designation that shouldn't be applied to all ships of that size, and somebody changed it to 'Medium Tanker' in the game. Then I complained that it was an America-specific ship, and hardly generic (though I must admit when you're looking through the periscope one big oiler looks pretty much like another).
I've had T-and-C-type ship lists completed for some time now, just waiting for something like this to come along.
