not that I know of, you should have the full balao complement, as the insides are those of a balao class.

try it without any other mod, and/or install last

Hey Keltos,

Have you finished with this one? I think now that we also have Dagon's U-class, someone could do something about a British/Australian campaign.

Hi ! yes and no, now that I've revamped some of my IJN subs with custom damage zones I'll do that to the Truant too, once I've finished my Type C2 that is,

I think a Brit campaign is a good idea

Hi: Anyone have an idea what could cause my bridge station not to work?

If I use the mast version I wind up in front of the gun on the deck when I click the bridge sation.

If I use no mast (1.62) I wind up in the air above the bridge.

I use the Generic mod enabler & have tried with just the mod & patch enabled but stiil have a problem.

I have sh4 uboat missions - steam version.

British mark VIII** torpedoes for the T-Class boat (03-25-2009):

The Mark VIII was the first burner-cycle torpedo in service in her Majesty's Submarine Service.

Speed: 40 kt
Range: 4,570 m
Propulsion: Steam
Explosive charge: 750 lbs. (340 kg) TNT

The Mark VIII** was the second burner-cycle torpedo in service. The principal World War II version was the Mark VIII** and this torpedo was used far more than any other British torpedo during the war. 3,732 were fired by September 1944, 56.4% of the total. This torpedo was still in use in British ships as late as 1983 and is probably still used today in other navies.

Speed: 45.5/41 kt
Range: 4570/6400 m
Propulsion: Burner-cycle, 322 hp
Explosive charge: Originally: 722 lbs. (327 kg) TNT Later: 805 lbs. (365 kg) Torpex

Love it

I have a picture of a british WW2 submarine periscope, so I know how the reticle looks like, and could do it. But I lack the time :damn: May be in the future :hmmm:

One interesting detail: Although the british torpedoes admitted angled shots, they were normally shot at zero GA (Straight from the bow) or at most with a fan shot, because their TDC was much more rudimentary (It had a position keeper but only to double check estimations, not updating torpedo GA constantly), so an optional torpedo mod that can't turn and will always go straight form the bow would be great.:yep:

Here's a very interesting reading on the subject:

I know, like in WWI for that matter, a bit like the early IJN system ?

so many things to read and do, and our IJN stuff that gets put aside everytime, but sometimes small breathers are required in a large mod effort.

have you read it?The excerpt from that book that deals with how the target solution was built is the web I linked to :DL

add that to the mod and try, I set the angle to 0 on both mark VIII and VIII**That should work, IIRC sergbuto did it long ago and it was fine

Interestingly, the fruit machine worked like the current SH4 TDC (Which is in turn hugely inferior to the real US thing): You made an input of AOB, bearing and speed based on estimations, and then started the "simulation". If the next time you raised the scope the target was on the same bearing as the Fruit Machine indicated, then the solution was probably correct.

Here is the view through HMS Safari's periscope (Note the protrusion on the upper part for the bearing repeater, like in the german periscopes. The reticle is in mils and looks exactly like the first one you did for the Jap subs based on the old film, keltos):

BTW since the british submarines fought from bases in India and Malaysia as well as later from US bases in Australia, I guess that adding the T-class to the campaign as another playable submarine should be easy and realistic.

both the Truant and the Zwaardvisch already are in campaign. they were from the start, I started a thread a loooong time ago requesting a dedicated campaign :" Reverse Monsun, British operations in the Pacific" to no avail....

I can't write campaign layers, and I feel this sub should have a Dutch/British campaign.

British torpedoes were excellent and the Royal Navy experienced none of the problems of malfunction which so plagued both the German and American navies.

Torpedo tubes were either internal, reloaded from within the pressure hull and located forward and/or aft; or external, located in the casings, either on the sides or forward and/or aft, and which would not be reloaded while in a patrol zone.

Several variations of torpedo tube combinations existed, even between boats of the same class. The standard torpedo was the 21in (533mm) MkVIII steam torpedo, 20ft (6.7m) long, with a warhead of approximately 661lb (300kg). They were capable of a speed of 30-35 knots on an average run of 8,000-10,000 yards.

If you had got the enemy course and speed right--you had your attack team to help you in computing it from your estimations--you knew what angle to aim ahead; that angle could then be set on the periscope. There was a bearing ring where the periscope passed through the pressure hull and you could read on it the bearing from dead ahead, on which the periscope was pointing. The actual sight was a graticule, or line down the centre of the periscope lens.

In WW2 the only fire control settings to be applied to a torpedo in the tube were gyro angle and possibly (but not in all boats) running depth. These settings were applied mechanically by hand from information passed over the intercom from the control room. Speed (high/low) was pre-set and a nominal depth (depending on the season and area of operation) was put on before loading.
During the attack estimated taget speed, course and range were fed into a mechanical angle solver ("fruit machine") which was also provided with the submarine's gyro heading. One of the solutions provided by this calculator was the Torpedo Track Angle, the gyro angle to be applied to the torpedoes. This angle was relative to the direction the bow would be facing when the fish was fired. Torpedo spread was achieved by maintaining a steady course (of the submarine) and varying the gyro angle and firing interval (time between firing) for each fish. The advantage of this was that the bow didn't necessarily have to be pointed towards the target.

The largest salvo in history was fired by Lieutenant (later Vice Admiral Sir) Arthur 'Baldy' Hezlet who, as Commanding officer of HMS Trenchant during WWII, sank the Japanese battle-cruiser Ashigara which he hit with five torpedoes out a salvo of eight from a range of four thousand yards!

I need intel on how they set the giros on the british torpedoes if any ?

it seems they did , then I shouldn't set the turn angle on the .sim to 0

but maybe less than the US's 135 degrees ?

Hitman
04-17-10, 02:08 AM
They could but didn't, because it was too troublesome. That's what you can gather from reading the account by Ben Bryant in the page I linked. NOt even for spreads, as they simply spaced the firing of the torpedoes.

Cool, gimme a few weeks to get it up to scratch and ill PM you a link to the 3ds & DDs files. i been meaning to finnished it off for ages and its about 75% there.... :)
Though you may want to add the finer details to the bridge your self.... but I really need to skin the conning tower and add the props, stern dive planes and cabling.
No doubt SHIV has a controller for the US fleet boats so you can animate the retractable bow dive planes

Hell I Might try and get it in to SHV also - but probably just as an AI unit.
(By the way, im only allowed to say it better than the current model you use as i made that too. Lamo.....)

yatta !!! thanks !

I added some on your first mesh but this one looks, well, perfect !

but I really need to skin the conning tower and add the props, stern dive planes and cabling.
ok

No doubt SHIV has a controller for the US fleet boats so you can animate the retractable bow dive planes

I have already done it for our Jyunsen B which also had retractable planes so I know how to do that :D

this one is gonna be so much better ! the first mesh's tub was too deep for SHIV's dummies

You also need to separate the turret from the tower mesh so we can add it to a new dedicated DG, like we do for the IJN and Narwhal (well like Peabody built for me ;) )

Hell I Might try and get it in to SHV also - but probably just as an AI unit.

Ask Peabody as he already made an AI one for our IJN campaign .

(By the way, im only allowed to say it better than the current model you use as i made that too. Lamo.....)

I liked the first model a lot !:salute: but prefer the new one:yep:

can you make two models ? one with the external tubes aft of the tower (8 +3) like this one and one with the forward external tubes (10 + 1) under the tower as seen in the picture here above.

I might then make the mod to have :

Class T model 2

I thought about it but its a lot of work, the T class group one had the fore tubes amid ships, no stern tube and a totally different bow design to boot, they remodeled it for the group 2 and 3 boats because of poor performace caused by the bow design. Plus the group one also had different conning tower.
The first model I have made is a group 3 boat, it took months just to get it where it is, and it would take months to make a group one boat - the bow is very tricky to model.
I couuld make a group 3 with 2 fore tube amid ships but then it is a fictional sub, not a historical one.

http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/4364/tmod1.jpg (http://img687.imageshack.us/i/tmod1.jpg/)

So the bow design was different on the group one boats (6+2+2 tubes, later one added to the stern)

I'm re-reading the Class T boat from which the above picture was taken.

A group 3 boat with 6+2 fore and 3 stern tubes will do then ;)

also from what I read they only had external torpedo tube doors on a few of them

do you have intel or a model for the DG ? tired of using a US one... I just read they used a maark XII gun.

commanders in the far east asked for more armor on it, eventually having a full turret covering the gun.

http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/8697/64139938.jpg (http://img208.imageshack.us/i/64139938.jpg/)

There were some common ids on different nodes

fixed that,

fixed the zon file too (all the calculations are in an excell file with the mod, they are based on the stock hit points of the mk 14 used as baseline)

mk VIII TNT
min 96,1
max 144,2
AP 80,1
max turn angle = 35

mk VIII TorPex
min 225
max 337,5
Ap 187,5
max turn angle = 35

mk 14 US torpex
min 180
max 270
AP 150
max turn angle = 135

This mod gives you both british torpedoes mark VIII TNT and mark VIII** Torpex and the US mk14 II torpex torpedoes that was missing from the game, while retaining the original mk14 too, it'll be available mid-1942.

I always thought they folded away like the planes on the US boats.

Exactly this ^^

so like US ones .?

you also need to make the rudder, bow planes (2 separate) and stern planes separate entities, like the tower and the gun turret as they are animated separately. Sorry if I sound bossy :salute:

From what I read in the T CLass book, there were no outer doors (:D) although they briefly experimented with those based on an unsubstanciated account of a Portuguese sub captain saying they gained 1.5 knots in speed with the outer doors installed.

Yes all animated parts must be seperate objects (.obj) I am aware of this.
As for the tube doors.
Only the group 1 T class had external tube doors, they were removed for the redesigned bows of groups 2 and 3.

Thats another problem moddling all the types.
Groups 2 and 3 were very similar in appearance, group two has a 'dip' on the forward decking like group 1 and most had the 'enclosed cab' type conning tower.

But between group 1 and 3, only the main hull was the same in apperance, the bow, deck, conning tower and tube arrangement were all completely different.
Also I have seen no less than 4 different conning tower types on various T class boats.

Looking at google images, it seems that some people mistake the Post war A class for the T class http://home.cogeco.ca/~gchalcraft/sm/images/DOLPHIN4.jpg :)
(The center sub is an A class)

A type 3 is fine by me. btw do you know, as it stated "installed in 1945", if the Snort was fitted to the Truant during or after WWII ?

Yeah but they had to removed the deck gun as having both gun and snort caused too much drag when submerged.
The Submarine Deck Gun was outdated and usless by 1945 anyway.

in the same line of thought, I need intel on the Mark 3 torpedo computer and the mark I torpedo computer.

Is the mark III post war only ? (I read they could set the gyro 70 degrees on the torpedoes with that one)

What are the capabilities of the Mark one, and dates in service.

Could they set the gyros on the torpedoes and how much when using the "fruit machine" ?

As seen here above in the previous post, the gun's tub is too short to my taste..

so I chacked against a good picture :

I used to guesstimate the depth of the "tubs" until I figured out how to merge models, I would merge a Gato Tower with the model and use that as a reference.

I can't wait to play around with this and the new model, absolutely stunning JU_88+Keltos!

New British 4 inch DG done Thanks to Peabody. The Class T now has her rightful gun with armored turret ! :)

also : while the game is lacking the .303 machine gun, Peabody implemented the .50 machine gun as AA gun, which is a lot closer to RL than a single 20 mm AA !

I modified the tower according to a RL picture, the original tub was too big.

now it needs some tweaking...

needs to be implemented :

Peabody's British 4 inch gun with armored turret

This looks great!

Have downloaded, but won't be able to play for a while.

Am I correct in thinking that British subs could only fire their torpedoes at a gyro angle of zero, so the boat had to be manouevred into the firing position? If that's true, I think that would be quite a challenge in the game!

Go to the Tower.sim Obj_Turret, I think your fire restrictions are wrong.

Try these on both Obj_Turrets:

Fire[1]
[0]
Trav_min=15
trav_max=345
elev min= -15
elev max= 90

From what I see in the picture, I don't think the aft gun can fire in that direction. I think the restrictions were set for a forward and aft AA guns and never changed. Both of your guns face aft.

- When will long awaited high-resolution T-class sub model be released? I count on standalone mod, too.

- Which torpedo tubes are reload-able in your mod? What about aft tubes?

Hi Keltos,

this is an amazing skin, must be a max render.

Hi,

My new paint job. This has gotta be one of the hardest boats to paint, the DDS file system an all.

I have been trying to get the hull to dazzle like the Keltos conning tower job. It might no be perfect, but there is a new luster in the moon light,. Should I camo the boat or not, mmm.

Thanks Keltos for the boat

Found a few pictures for you.

This next one is entitled "launch of an unidentified T class submarine"

This T-clas is the HMS Torbay (N79) which you can see on the conning tower the N79.

Perhaps you should PM him, Kelt, if you haven't already. I'm interested too.

I think I saw him post in GT a couple times. It's like a retirement home for modders. :O:
