Ok, I've gotten some interest in holding another Subsim meeting in Galveston. We had a successful meeting here in 2004 (http://www.subsim.com/meet2004_event.htm), we had 30 people show up from the US and Europe, we had a special guest (Kelly Asay, President of Tesseraction Games, producer of Enigma: Rising Tide), we were given a great presentation by Capt. Zeb Alford, commanding officer of the USS Shark and USS Sam Houston, we spent the night aboard a WWII submarine, toured a dreadnought battleship, got to help Sharky shop for shoes, got blasted out of our bunks by the Dutch Gang, and we did a lot of fun stuff. Including the first ever look at Silent Hunter III in all its glory in a closed door session. Plus, we just had a ton of fun getting to know each other in person.

So, I'm interesting in finding out how many people we can get for another meeting, Oct 9-12. If we can get enough firm committments, I will begin preparations in July.

This meeting will include some of the stuff we did the last time and some new stuff:

2008 Meeting Prelim Agenda (http://www.subsim.com/meet2008.htm)

There will be special guests with a closed door session of an upcoming subsim, you won't want to miss that. ;) Details to come.

Let's see how many people we can sign up. You Europeans & Canadians should be here in droves, with our weak dollar and cheap travel, you have no excuse not to attend this one. :arrgh!:

Send me your City and I'll add it to the map.

2008 SUBSIM Meet World Map (http://www.subsim.com/2008_subsim_meet.htm)

Come on, amigo. I will provide transportation from the airports to your hotel (I'll be the guy with the lighthouse shirt, ya know), and help you manage on the ground. Plus make sure you know it's ok to pass on the right in Texas, how to avoid scorpions, and show you where Santa Anna gave up Texas to Sam Houston.

You can count me in Neal. :yep:

How do we go about confirming this with you ?

I want to reserve a spot.:)

Hey Neal...

I'll be in Australia shortly before that...meaning I'd be travelling 13452km (8359m straight line) to get there.

Doing the maths: two flights to LAX, one to Dallas, one to Houston, car to Galveston arriving 28 hours later. I think it's doable. Last time I was in TX I drove from Dallas to Galveston, should have taken the puddle jumper.

Anyone else gonna travel further?

I don't think I'll go... I'm just not a social ralley person.

EDIT:

It's nothing personal, it's just that I feel strange when I go to these things.

Got approval from the Wifie..yea..just need to know exactly when etc so I can request time off in advance and book airline tickets etc.Not sure if you are familiar with a couple of buddies of mine that live down in those parts.Argon,Shadowfax, and Tootall...well all got togther in Reno about 10 years ago now..all naval nutz like us they live in Texas.

If Sailor Steve can get there you can bunk with me ,I'll flip for the car and the room with double queens if you can get your air squared away I'll hook up w ya there.I can stay as long as we are there I just need to know as much of the details so I can plot the course now. :arrgh!:

P.S. I promise not to try to convert anyone there I give my word....all fun and naval chat only.

I'll go out through Brisbane (AU home town) on Qantas and will probably divert from LAX to my US home, where I'll do a quick change and then continue direct to Houston.

Side issue: Neal in the agenda you have the on board sleepover on Friday night listed as #1. Is Sat night a sleepover as well or is it "get your own room".

Jimmy Walker's on the Kema side of the Kema draw bridge down Clear Lake way.

The wife says I can come just checking flight prices. How much advance booking to stay at the Subsim ranch?

So it would be arriving on the 9th October and leaving on the 13th or the 14th?

My place can hold 8 guys comfortably. Once we officially set the meeting, I'll take reservations.

If you book a double and share a room at a Holiday Inn hotel (http://www.hotels-rates.com/hotelavail.aspx?hotelid=80233&rooms=1&subaffiliateid=&am=10&ad=9&nights=2&adults=2&children=0&avail=Get+Hotel+Rates%21#visited=true&cityID=9021), you can stay for $60 a night. Nice place, too. Scroll down for pics.

Same here, room with a (http://www.bestwesterntexas.com/hotels/best-western-pearland-inn/) buddy and get a room for $45.

And Motel 6 offers a room with two large beds for $20 a night. (http://www.motel6.com/ms/select-stay.do):o Pretty close to free.

Yeah, I would say arrival on Oct 8 is best for International flyers, gives you some time to rest up. We can sleep over on the sub and DE either Friday or Saturday, I don't think people will want to sleep there two nights in a row.

I am strongly considering renting a 12 passenger van for International members, this will save a lot of $$ on car rentals.
http://www.budget.com/budgetWeb/images/common/fleet/fleet_dom_e350van.jpg
For a comfortable 12-person van (http://www.budget.com/budgetWeb/html/en/cars/specialty.html), the costs for 4 days would be a mere $45 total per person. :yep: I know some Texas and other US guests will drive in, so this will allow us some capacity, plus my car holds 5~7 people. So, you Brits, Germans, Dutch, and other Euros, I'll try to cover you so all you have to do is get on the plane. You can return home and tell your friends you had a Texan chauffeur.

Edit: this would be even better! 15 person van, nice! (http://www.cappsvanrental.com/r3_rates.php?)$33 per person for the whole meeting time.

Yeah, if you ever wanted to vacation in the US, this would be a great way to kick it off, mate. Come on the 8th, attend the meeting and all the events from the 9-12, then go to another city or road trip.

Will be trying again for this one, with maybe a little better planning on my part.

Yo! Right in the first post

I will provide transportation from the airports to your hotel (I'll be the guy with the lighthouse shirt, ya know), and help you manage on the ground.

I live 13 minutes from Hobby.

Intercontinental is about 45 minutes, but no worries, I will make a swing by there too. I am definitely interested in the monster van option, it will also help keep us together and minimize the number of people who will find it hard to follow the leader in the car caravan.

A chance to visit back home.....

A chance to visit my most favorite ship ever.....

A chance to eat at Guidos.....

Oh Yea...a chance to meet with a bunch of really kewl people....

I'm liking this idea more and more, I'd easy drive the monster van :)

Looking at ticket prices from Aberdeen to Houston Bush International I'm looking at £350 which I could afford and I suppose I wouldn't need a huge amount of spending money. Main thing is the wife has said I can come if I want.

Tulsa is about an 8.5 hour drive away. I could probably make the drive. It would be nice to check out the Cavalla and compare her condition to the Batfish. I'll put the dates on my calendar as tentative, but I don't foresee any reasons not to be there at this time.

OT: Also, if some of you guys are realy into paintball, there's Oklahoma D-Day, which is a HUGE paintball battle held every year in early June - this year it's June 9 - 15, but the big battle will be on Saturday the 14th. The "battlefield" is about an hour NE of Tulsa. You can visit the website here...

I might actually show up for this one. Probably stop in AZ on the way back or so.

Maybe i could change the plans and make you go to Washington State? Possibly tour a Trident sub or something. I'm sure that would be easy to arrange, except you would need to be a US citizen to board and have a background check done on you. Maybe that is a bad plan then.

Last time I went (been mulitple times), they fired a torpedo plug for me (quite loud actually! No wonder you can hear a transient launch some distance away!). I also drove the Trident simulator.

We have all the Seawolfs out here too. Might be able to arrange a Seawolf tour. The Seawolfs don't have nukes on board, so the background check might be less strict.

PS. I forgot - no cameras allowed either (for obvious reasons).

Are you coming? :)I don't know! I planned to change jobs this year because I am bored out of my mind. Every time I try and say I need a challenge, they just get out their checkbook and give me more money. It is an effective strategy on their part because it ultimately shuts me up for a while, but in the end.... you know what I mean! :D

So, if i am still working where I am, 90% chance! If not, then probably 10% chance.

I'm on the fence!

couple of questions would be...

1) How kid friendly will this be...I see the sub allows anyone to stay on board over 5...
2) they recommend taking watches during the stay on the sub....for what? :o
3) the trip to the shooting range...will someone be handing out firearms and perhaps unlimited ammo?
4) sunday at the ranch...will there be horse back riding, roping then branding?
also We could have a Guitar Hero tournament for the right to the next piece of chicken!

Will do. Btw, we have a reenacting event on the USS Batfish the weekend of May 23-25, if you want to put an enlisted uniform together and help out. We have a Yahoo Group titled 'batfishgroup', if you want to get more info and be in the loop year round.

Neal, I might be able to go. Texas is kind of far but it would be great to attend. I have to see with what monsters of steam I will be working with though. So I can not say for sure just yet if it is a definite go. Are we allowed to go through the fire rooms and engine rooms on the Texas Neal? If not I would need a bunch of you to distract the people so I can sneak down there. Yes, the engine rooms are open to the public. Plus we can schedule a special hard hat tour. At the 2004 meeting, after I left the group at the Texas to get the Bar-B-Que started, they corralled a docent and were given access to areas of the ship normally off limits to the public.

Hey Neal, I'm interested in going! Most Definately!

Please email me a list of costs that I will need to come up with once we reach there. I plan on spending Thursday and Friday night in a hotel, so I have that cost figured, but anything else such as food, tours, transportation, etc.

We're driving our own car from Kansas City, MO but would like to carpool when available in that 15 passenger van.

My dad and I (who's coming with me) would like to spend the night Saturday night aboard the submarine, (dibs on the captain's cabin  ).

Do you need any depsosits or any down payments for anything that we can do here with our credit card?

Thanks,
Chad

hi Chad,

Once we reach the minimum number of people interested in attending, I will break down the costs associated with the meet, including the bus rental, admission to the BB Texas, museums, and sleepover aboard the submarine. That should be around April-May, when the Meet is officially announced. Thanks, look forward to seeing you.

I'd like to put in a tentative "count me in." I would need to finalize some things with both my jobs and it depends on the cost. Like so many others I would be driving down (from central Missouri). In order to be a real experience you will never forget I recomend that the men staying on the submarine overnight learn how to fart, belch, cough, watch a movie and then stay up all night playing poker.

Just like on a real boat ...

I got lost in the bilges!!! :rotfl:

That is a distinct possibility for me. I'm only a few hundred miles away from Houston/Galveston. I've seen both the Cavalla and the Texas and the DE that's "anchored" next to Cavalla. I have a huge amount of photos from all three. The sub is really interesting. Very different from U505 in Chicago.

Ok, we definitely have enough interest. Next step, I will research the costs, put together a sign-up sheet, and start taking reservations.

Any members who attended the 2004 Texas meeting will have first shot at staying at my place. If we do not fill up, I will open the slots for new attendees.

Unless anyone has strong objections, I will designate the Motel 6 near Hobby airport (http://www.motel6.com/reservations/motel_detail.aspx?num=1086&VID=&NOA=&aYr=&aMo=&aDa=&dYr=&dMo=&dDa=&CP=&TA=&BTR=)as the official lodging place for the meeting. This is the least expensive motel, but it's still acceptable (I stay at them frequently). This will allow cash-strapped travelers a nice clean place to stay without costing too much. Edit: it will also allow us to pick up everyone in one stop, instead of going around 5 motels to pick up people.

A room is $40 a night for one person, or you can buddy up with two large beds for $44 a night (which is $22 a person). You will need it for Oct 9 and 10, possibly Oct 12.

After we get closer to the date I will put up a buddy sheet, but you are encouraged to seek out other members you think you may want to split a room with at any time.

cheers
Neal

Ok Laddies. Three from Idaho. I don't think my daughter will be much of a travel partner UNLESS some of you have some sons that are good looking that she can flirt with. My wife likes the paintball war and the museums AND I'll bring my blue book about the Japanese side told by the Japanese Naval Officers back in 1947. My grandpa gave it to me back in 1973 after a friend of his passed away. Verrrrrry Interrrresssting stuff! By the way, anybody happen to put a bug in UBI's ear about making a WW 1 Subsim game? It would be interesting? With all you modders out there to fix up their mistakes, it would make a very good game. God bless you Leovampire. By the way, would they mind if I brought along my M-1 Garand? haven't used it in such a long time. Standard 150 grain load 30-06. I have 3 or 4 clips. I have to talk to my wife about it. I also have a 1916 broomhandle Mauser pistol, without the wooden stock, a Russian SKS, and a Russian 1942 Moisin-Nagant. Very long, very heavy, shoots sweet. No scope just iron sights. I wanted to get the semi-auto russian carbine but when I got to the store, they were out. the 1942 has a 2 foot pig sticker, not a blade but round and comes to a flat point. Just don't know how to get all that hardware on a plane.

I don't know how old your daughter is but I'll be 20 years old when we go :D

You should bring her along anyways, it'll be something she'll never forget (even if she wants too lol )

I have a 30' Winnebago but I ain't bringing it. The gas it would use to go from
Atlanta to Houston would buy 3 airline tickets and 14 nights stay at Motel 6.
Since I was there in 2004, I can stay at Neal's house or maybe at the motel 6.
$40. a night isn't bad for just 2 or 3 nights. Everything sounds good to me
except staying on the sub (I'll use the DE like last time) (don't like Klaxtons in
the middle of the night) and I am way too old for Paintball games (strictly an
Armchair Admiral). I will definately be there barring any unforseen occurrences....

Jimbuna, she was raised on The Sims games, and fansites, so seeing this message board with all the different signatures, and not knowing the difference between a deck gun and anti-aircraft guns confuse her.

I tried to explain how ballast tanks work, and she got confused when I said compressed air.

Ironically, she's in College Calculus and I'm still in just College Algebra and she's 2 years younger than me!

at present there is no Ms. Stevens, but that's always subject to change without notice. But, you raise a good point, what we can do is, after I post the signup form so we can start signing up people and getting a list of attendees, I will contact you and the other wives who are coming and discuss some alternate events that you may be interested in. Once we draw closer to the Oct date, we can set up something and work out the details, i.e., who will manage the group, where and when, ect.

I was a ping jocky when I was in during the Cold War when Russia was still full of Commies. Used to chase the alpha class fast attacks and the new typhoon class around. We always played with the whiskey class diesel subs that were so NOISY! Noisy torpedo doors, garbage disposals and the acoustics! You could hear them 90 miles away just listening on passive sonar and all this on an AN/SQS-26 CX sonar in a fast frigate moving at 10 knots in the middle of the North Atlantic.:arrgh!:

Pointless asking you for a sub then http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/6282/uowyaydh5wc2.gif

Hey, just because your old doesn't mean I don't love you guys. Your like the Uncles that I never had.

Steve, if I can call you that, my dad is 2 years older than you, he reached the big 50 and i let him know it.

@Pit
In my twenty years of experience, I'm not quite as foolish as I was when I was 16.

@Elder-Pirate
I hope you can make it, if not then maybe you can get your nap in :|\\

@jimbuna
No alarm here. I imagine your in your mid-30's, not too old but, well, older than me :D

I actually believe I was born in the wrong generation. If I was a generation one or two that are behind me, I think things would be different for me.

And I think you misunderstood: in two years I'll be 60.

Best thing about us old guys Sailor Steve, is that we remember the Good Ol' Days
When Ships were made of wood and men of steel..........
When the mighty skipper would yell
"Take Her Down"
"Take her Deep""
"F__K the Pressure, Make It 15 Feet"

Hell, I'm 28, and age ain't nothin but a number!

I'll see about bringing my dad down for at least one of the days. He's in his 60's and a diesel boat vet (qual'd on the Angler (SS-240), made his way up to an ET1 on the Skate (SSN-578)).

He came down with me for the Cavalla torpedo load last February. I bet he'd have a blast with all of you.

I know cappy70..

I dread getting older, but can't do anything about it.

Luckily, once I graduate from college, I believe my job will be relatively stress-free if I'm lucky. I'm going to be a history or science teacher. I can do math but do not like it.

Any other teachers/professors aboard?

The best part is, on sunday, we could watch a football game @ Neal's house! The football thread would be broadcasting live from the world headquarters.

Watchin' the Vikes, oops, I mean Texans, oops, I mean Raiders:oops: ;) .

So which jersey will it be? Raiders or Texans?

No Steve, I seldom get drunk or inebriated to the extent I forget where I am or what I'm doing.
Besides, I'll have Kpt. Lehmann to look after http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/3060/gigglebigtb9.gif

I was a snipe on a nuclear carrier and it'd be interesting to see the ancestry of my old pit (if I can sneak my way down to the Texas' bowels), and meet some of the people here on this board. Working on getting the details straight, but pencil in two from the Syracuse, NY area.
