It's OK Jim, I'll be in the pub with you I think. You can watch football there as well.;)

Good man....I knew we could depend on our Aussie cousins to maintain the tradition......Now I've gotta work on Kpt and privateer http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/5158/winkbigid2.gif
Great! You guys can spend a lot of money to fly halfway 'round the world just so you can go somplace new to get drunk and not remember where you are.
:rotfl:

No Steve, I seldom get drunk or inebriated to the extent I forget where I am or what I'm doing.
Besides, I'll have Kpt. Lehmann to look after http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/3060/gigglebigtb9.gif

Or maybe he'll be looking after me http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/621/thinkbigsw1.gif

Not really....I should imagine Neal will post some approximates for car hire, visits etc. soon.
I take enough for food and drink plus any pressies you may want to purchase.

All together $1000 should cover it more than easily.....depending on your appetite and consumption levels http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/thumbsup.gif

The meeting dates are OCT 9-12 so I'm planning on flying out on 8th and back on 13th, Btitish Airways, Heathrow to Houston direct, about £505. This cuts out the need for a US changeover and also knocks nearly 4 hours off the travel time.

If you've any more queries, don't hesitate to PM me

Not even one mile from my home lies the river Tyne, there is a bi-annual (I believe) visit from the Tall Ships event to the river.
Competitors come from all over the world. I was wondering if Elissa has ever competed in this round the world race event.
I'm afraid I can't find a link to a list of competitors at present, but here are two local links with some pictures:

By the way... is anyone thinking of making plans to meet up and make arrangement for the trip there together? I do dislike traveling alone :p

Assuming I end up where I think I'll end up next [academic] year, I'd certainly be up for going with anyone planning on traveling from/through Toronto, Buffalo or Detroit :hmm:

Well I have just talked to my Better Half and October 9-12 is somewhat booked for this event. Thanks for the invite Neal, because me and my old lady has been looking for a reason to visit Galveston and this will be the best event that I can think of to 'fill the bill'.

I will have to see IF my finances will allow me to be there, but if at all possible I will TRY to be there even if it is only for 1 day.

Hello Neal (and all the other people),

Unfortunatly Angel and I cannot come to this meeting because of a very special reason:

Somewhere around this years meeting we are going to have our first baby!!! :o
So I guess that would be the first Subsim baby right

So since we cannot attend to this years meeting (damn first meeting ever that I will miss. Been to all of them sofar), it will mean that all you guys will have to come to Holland again next year  .

Cheers,
BlueBeard and Angel (Menno and Jolanda)

Hello Neal,

Great to hear that a new meeting is being planned :) I am not sure if Jolanda and I can attend, because we are going to get married in August and that will mean we have a lot of saving cash to do. I will check the current rates for the flight, and when we can come I would like to reserve a spot in your house if still possible.

I will let you know if we can make it :) And if not we can always organise a meeting in Holland again :)

Cheers,
BlueBeard

hi Menno! Oh man, congrats x 10 to you and Jolanda. That is great news, I'm very happy for you guys :yep: Yes, if you are able to attend, the Master Suite is all yours. If not, we will see you in 2009, my daughter will be studying in Italy and I'm making a trip over.

cheers
Neal

Alright fellows, ya'll have intruiged me. I'll be there.

It's going to be one long drive from Texas Tech Univ. in Lubbock, but I'll survive.

On that note. Shiner, Texas is on the way; so the day before everything kicks off I'll be at the brewery. Any and all should make it out there if possible. http://www.shiner.com/

As for lodging, a buddy of mine has a 35' sailboat down there, so I'll be staying there, it sleeps 8, but 4 spots are taken already (did ya'll really think I'd drive to Houston by myself?) So in theory we could put 4 more on it. I'll call him today and see if I can firm up that number and see if we can get any of ya'll on the Texas Tech Party Boat. Only thing is we'd prefer the college aged, dumb, wild, crazy, go two-stepping and bring the girls home with us, sort of crew (Yes, this is a legal use of the term "crew.") Knowing how to sail would also be a plus. You'll also need a well thought out pirate name. As well as splitting the cost of groceries (beer & cigarettes) with us.

It's been said that a picture is worth a thousand words: This was last weekend.

http://img380.imageshack.us/img380/8366/n6383557061481146817copdm6.jpg

If any of ya'll think you can keep up with us, we'd be glad to have you.

(Note: This picture captured pretty much the whole weekend in one shot, it also is one of the many reasons I won't goto Mexico anytime soon.)

The meeting is a go. More details coming, but the dates and general plan of action is set.

If you need to use the Subsim shuttle, these are the hotels we will be picking up and dropping off at:

Pearland area hotels
Motel 6 (http://www.motel6.com/ms/check-availability.do?property=1086&numberOfAdults=&arrivalDate=&departureDate=&corporatePlusNumber=&travelAgentNumber=) - Lowest Price
Howard Johnson (http://hotelsinsider.travelhero.com/index.cfm/id/143516/aid/1620/city/HOUSTON/index.html) - Closest with low price
Hampton Inn (http://hamptoninn.hilton.com/en/hp/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=HOUPLHX&WT.srch=1) Closest, moderate price
Best Western (http://www.hotels-rates.com/hotels_reservations/property/662/)
Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites (http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/hi/1/en/hotelsearchresults?_requestid=634842)

Don't pick a motel way off on the north side of Houston unless you are getting your own rental car :)

I have all the time already reserved....I was wanting to hitchhike down:) being the adventerous type but the wife thinks I'm crazy....So I'm thinking I will fly, rent a car,and hotel etc...unless I can find a hot air balloon pilot who wants to float to Texas at that particular time of year....:hmm:

I see on the night of the 11th..is a scheduled sleepover on the sub or DD...I'd like to request now that I be part of that if enough spots are available..if not I can do a hotel just need to now sometime in advance.

Yes indeed, the same and slighly heavier only. ;)

Hence the Zorki user name. The join date is the same as sailor steve, so I guess we all created new account here at the same time.

Ok, we definitely have enough interest. Next step, I will research the costs, put together a sign-up sheet, and start taking reservations.

Any members who attended the 2004 Texas meeting will have first shot at staying at my place. If we do not fill up, I will open the slots for new attendees.

Unless anyone has strong objections, I will designate the Motel 6 near Hobby airport (http://www.motel6.com/reservations/motel_detail.aspx?num=1086&VID=&NOA=&aYr=&aMo=&aDa=&dYr=&dMo=&dDa=&CP=&TA=&BTR=)as the official lodging place for the meeting. This is the least expensive motel, but it's still acceptable (I stay at them frequently). This will allow cash-strapped travelers a nice clean place to stay without costing too much. Edit: it will also allow us to pick up everyone in one stop, instead of going around 5 motels to pick up people.

A room is $40 a night for one person, or you can buddy up with two large beds for $44 a night (which is $22 a person). You will need it for Oct 9 and 10, possibly Oct 12.

After we get closer to the date I will put up a buddy sheet, but you are encouraged to seek out other members you think you may want to split a room with at any time.

cheers
Neal

Currently @ $45:hmm: ~$48

I am now officially bummed...after saving all of the hard earned $$$, sweating the increasing gas prices...and all that stuff...

My company just informed me that I will be in travel status starting 10/7 and ending 11/22 with no rest inbetween. Seems like there is some training that has to be done and since I am the trainer...

I will be thinking of all of you though...

Would someone please climb to the top of the Texas and snap a pic for me? I was so looking forward to the hardhat tour...not to mention the hanging out on the desk of the sub with you guys...(I am somewhat claustrophobic and the last time I went into the sub I almost lost it...)

Reg. tour on BB is OK for me.
Shooting Range: I will be there watching & taking pics, not to shoot
(unless you have BAR, Thompson, MP44 or PPSH) (M1 would do also)
Museum is OK ($5 as I am a senior)
Sailing ship is Ok also (haven't seen too many of them)
DE sleepover is good to go (sub is too claustrophobic for me)
Meals are all good (meat & potatoes man)

JIM

PS. NO Paintball (too old for physical violence, 1s & 0s work just fine for me)

I am working here in houston at the US Coast Guard Vessel Traffic center and also as the Search and Rescue Director for Texas and LA.

The VTS works like an air trafic controller for all of Houston, Texas City m, and Galveston, and the SAR desk directed operations for helo and 6 ships in the Texas LA area.

If the organizer of this event would like, Contact me and I can arrange tours of either of these places in Houston or of any Coast Guard cutters or rescue stations, (yes, including the Air station) in Houston or Galveston for this event.

As a matter a fact,, I just noticed,, I live right around the corner from you Neal,, I live on Wheatstalk In Pearland,, about 1 mile from you

Canada: I did not include "where are you coming from" on the first version of the registration form. I've added since. But come on, we need some reps from our favorite neighbor from the north :)

Deadline on registration: not a firm deadline but I need to know who wants in on the hardhat tour and the submarine sleepover 1 month in advance, so let's say the cut off is Sept 10.

Both those vidyos left off the most important word: Oal. Yew know, the stuff that makes Texas what it is; the stuff you pull up out of the ground? It's pernounced "oal".

Ever now and then Ah used to run into folks who'd try to be Texan by talkin like a Georgian. Ah'd have to tell um: They say "Geoagia", we say "Georrrrgia". In Texas we have "R"s. Texans don't talk lahk southerners a'tall - Texans talk like Huckleberry Hound!

Change the "ing" to an "ang" when it is found within a word. Texans with a heavy accent don't "sing." They "sang." They don't have "things." They have "thangs." They don't eat "wings." They eat "wangs."

Airport: Houston Hobby (HOU) is closest, but some flights only land at Houston Bush International (IAH). If you can get Hobby, do it.

Will someone be available to pick me up? Yes, someone will be by both airports at 6pm THURSDAY Oct 9 to pick up arrivals and take to the gathering/or you motel. BE SURE YOU BOOK A ROOM IN ONE OF THE SELECTED MOTELS.

Pearland area hotels
Motel 6 (http://www.motel6.com/ms/check-availability.do?property=1086&numberOfAdults=&arrivalDate=&departureDate=&corporatePlusNumber=&travelAgentNumber=) - Lowest Price
Howard Johnson (http://hotelsinsider.travelhero.com/index.cfm/id/143516/aid/1620/city/HOUSTON/index.html) - Closest with low price
Hampton Inn (http://hamptoninn.hilton.com/en/hp/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=HOUPLHX&WT.srch=1) Closest, moderate price
Best Western (http://www.hotels-rates.com/hotels_reservations/property/662/)
Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites (http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/hi/1/en/hotelsearchresults?_requestid=634842)
We won't shuttle people to the far side of Houston, pick the wrong motel and you are on your own :hmm:
If you need shuttle service, be sure to book your flight to arrive around 4~6pm Houston time Oct 9, Thursday.

will we sleep shipboard that night? Nope, you need to find a room at one of the above motels for Thursday and Friday.

can we spend 1 night on each ship? You spend Sat night aboard either the sub or DE, your choice. Read the meeting page. (http://www.subsim.com/meet2008.htm)

Hey Neal...

I'll be in Australia shortly before that...meaning I'd be travelling 13452km (8359m straight line) to get there.

Doing the maths: two flights to LAX, one to Dallas, one to Houston, car to Galveston arriving 28 hours later. I think it's doable. Last time I was in TX I drove from Dallas to Galveston, should have taken the puddle jumper.

Anyone else gonna travel further?

LOL, you drove from Dallas to Galveston after flying all that way? Wow, that is a beatdown.

Too bad, I can't make it this time.
For me, it is taxes, not Texas.
We had a VAT tax increase from 16 to 19 % in 2007. Because of some delay, the construction of my new home could not be finished by the end of 2006. That means, plus 3 % on the total construction costs which is about the purchase price for a small car. So far, I refused payments. That makes the building constructor unhappy. I have to wait and see how this turns out.

Gents,
I had hoped to come to the meeting in October but I will have to take a rain check. For those that may know me I was stationed on the USS Texas for almost 6 yrs and I just got out the Navy.

I have returned to all the joys of civilian life and to spending time with my family and I just will not have the time to attend. Things are going well though for me, I have found a great job working in the field that I love (IT) and I have some free time again.

Don't get me wrong, I miss being on the boat at times. Doing all the cool things we do and most of all my friends. But it was time for me to move anyway so I did.

But now I do have time to spend with my family and time to spend doing some submarine gaming which I plan on doing more often.

So, Neal I thank you very much for the chance to go but I will not be able to this time around. I would also like to thank Neal for being such a great guy and for being awesome to me and my family when the USS Texas was being Comissioned in Gavelston.

Again thanks

21 people dead and counting...
No power to Galveston for at least a month...
Thousands without shelter or at least significant damage to their homes...
Boats scattered all over the place...
Businesses disrupted for unknown periods of time...
Oil production facilities damaged or closed until further notice...

BB Texas is "closed until further notice" but I think the park will be open before the meeting Oct 10. I am checking with the marketing director now.

I have jiggered the calendar of events a little, the BB Texas tour will be on the morning of Oct 10 (unless they cancel) with shooting practice in the afternoon.

The Lone Star Flight museum and Elyssa tours are set for Oct 11, Sat.

The Subsim paintball war is still set for 10am Oct 12, Sun. We have 12 members who will fight it out for the title of Subsim Assassin. Or maybe Subsim Combat Leader. Something.

The Subsim paintball war is still set for 10am Oct 12, Sun. We have 12 members who will fight it out for the title of Subsim Assassin. Or maybe Subsim Combat Leader. Something.

Thanks
Neal

Well, the Flight Museum may be off the schedule too :(

Update on the Cavalla/Seawolf Park portion of the meeting. The CHF have set aside Oct 11 as a field day for us to climb all over the sub and clean, repair, and in general, help get Cavalla shipshape. If you want to help, please bring a set of old clothes and gloves. Of course, the clothes will also be useful the next day in the paintball war!

Also, donations are being accpeted for this event. You will get a special t-shirt, (http://www.subsim.com/Ike_Recovery.pdf) I suggest not working in it. Wear it proudly at special occasions. If you were thinking of making a donation during the meeting or tipping the host, this would be a far better cause!

http://www.subsim.com/Ike_Recovery.pdf (http://www.subsim.com/Ike_Recovery.pdf)

When you print out the form to mail it in, please be sure to mark the name with SUBSIM so the Foundation will know we are helping as a group.

Name: Bobby Riggens, SUBSIM member

I posted a few months back asking if any Brits were interested in travelling over to the meeting together. Sadly, there were no replies and I'm well aware that anyone flying from the UK will already have booked their flight and finalised their travel arrangements (as have I).

So....purely out of curiosity.......are any Brits attending this year ?

Whaa?! Kratos' not leaving? Has he been this long home by himself before? :hmm:

September 23, 2008 - What a difference a couple of days can make, especially when the US Navy is on your side. Sailors from Amphibious Construction Battalion 2 and the USS Nassau spent two days helping us clean out the museum. My advice for anyone when the Seabees show up is to get to out of the way because things are going to happen fast. These folks were awesome and pulled over 300 cubic yards of debris out of the museum. Words will never adequately convey what these men and women did for us. A ‘thank you’ seems so inconsequential. Their efforts will forever be remembered by the museum. Go Navy!
As is normally the case in many disasters, many folks come together to make a difference. Our friends from the Collings Foundation have helped tremendously with equipment and qualified folks. They took charge of corrosion-proofing our aircraft today as our mechanics kept an eye on the scooping out of the shop and searched for their personal tools. The BP plant in Texas City and Evergreen Industrial provided a tanker of fresh water to flush our airplanes. They were a lifesaver as Galveston’s water supply could not support our needs after the storm. The folks at Corrosion X also donated some product to help us protect our airplanes from melting away. Numerous other folks and companies have jumped in as well. I am simply too tired to list them all without leaving someone out. I cannot say thank you enough to everyone who has helped us after the storm. You mean more to us than you realize.
As for the airplanes, the Commemorative Air Force has graciously accepted our wayward B-17 and B-25 at their headquarters in Midland, TX. The SBD is at Ellington while the T-6 remains at Houston Southwest. The DC-3, F8F and Stearman are at Hobby airport in Houston while the Hellcat and Corsair are at the Friedkin Ranch in south Texas. The P-47 is in Sherman. TX. Dan Friedkin contacted us to offer hangar space and volunteered to fly the Hellcat out. I can’t thank them enough as they single handedly saved five aircraft with hangar space.
The Texas Aviation Hall of Fame was devastated by the storm. We were able to find a lot of artifacts including the Lady Be Good and Hornet exhibits. The Hornet is a little rough, but it is still intact. Unfortunately, many items were lost. Many of our volunteers and staff searched the numerous piles of debris and recovered more than I thought possible. Hopefully we can restore many of these items.
We are making progress and appreciate our many friends for their support during this time. We are doing our best with the limited supply of equipment and restricted access to Galveston. The city simply could not support humans after the storm, but our city officials and all involved with restoring essentials are dong a great job. I guess complaining that I haven’t been able to access the web since the storm will not go over too well with some folks. The amount of devastation is impressive and some people will return to nothing.
Hang in there with us. We’ll be back.

Rick just called to say Hampton cannot honor his reservation...
I called and they say they are closed until Dec 1, and only Centerpoint energy people are there now.

I will go by there tomorrow and speak to the GM, see if anything can be worked out.

Otherwise, I suggest everyone check their hotel reservations tomorrow. If you need to find another hotel, search on www.hotel.com (http://www.hotel.com/) for Pearland, TX

Yeah we did have a reservation and no they didn't call. I've called them and they are closed until Dec 1 so no way we can stay there. They mentioned either the La Quinta or the Marriott in Pearland but calling both of them turned out to be fruitless as they are both fully booked for that week.

I've booked us a room at the Marriott near the Houston Medical Centre (about 10 miles north of Pearland according to their reservations office). This was the closest we could get to Pearland.

If anyone finds something available nearer, then let us know!

I just called and now the Scottish Inn & Suites on 11130 Telephone Rd (the one StDev is staying at) and the one you found are now showing full.

You can call central reservations number at 800-251-1962 and use option #2 to make a reservation, then ask about

Red Carpet Inn on 6161 Gulf Fwy
Houston, TX 77023

they have rooms available now.

We're not going to be able to make the cattle roundup this time, the mosquitoes are extremely bad now, two weeks after Ike dumped a million bls of water across the Gulf Coast. They aren't bad in Pearland/Houston, because the city sprays, but out in the country you have to bath in repellent to go outside. Trust me.

Are they worse than Minnesota mosquitoes? Because that would be bad!!

We could make a gameshow of how long you can stay outside after twilight only wearing a swimming suit. $100 for every minute you can hack it out side.:o

On a side note, I did an experiment one time when i was in high school. Mosquitoes are attracted to CO2, so by my window a put a cointainer of baking soda and added some water and closed the window quickly. Within mnutes, there were hundreds of mosquitoes buzzing around the window!:o

so, yes MN has mosquitoes.:o

Thursday from 5PM until 9PM, meet and greet at Rancho Subsim (Neal's house).
Directions to Rancho Subsim (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=5108+Woodville+Ln,+Pearland,+TX+77584&sll=31.968599,-99.901813&sspn=25.595132,39.375&ie=UTF8&z=17&iwloc=addr)
You can click the Street View to see the neighborhood. Print this out and bring it with you if you are driving in.

The agenda is set for Friday and Sunday. (http://www.subsim.com/meet2008.htm)

Bring a personal water bottle with you, this is a storm ravaged area :) so everyone should pack some water.

Friday, be at Neal's house by 0730, we will leave for San Jacinto Battleground park (30 minutes away) and assemble there at 0815 for the BB Texas tour. You can choose to attend the Hard Hat tour or simply take the general tour. I have spoken to most of the guys who are local and some of you have offered to help transport people. Thursday evening we can go over the options.

Saturday, we are scheduled to visit the USS Cavalla at Seawolf Park, and pitch in with some help there Sat morning.

The Lone Star Flight Museum updated their status yesterday (http://www.lsfm.org/index.html) and it looks as though they will not be ready by Oct 11. Their phone number is no longer working, so I have e-mailed them.

So, once we have the meet and greet here Thursday evening, we can discuss our agenda for Sat. I think we should decide as a group what we can do for the Saturday afternoon.

Some pictures of Cavalla and Seawolf Park: http://supertzar.net/gsp/default.aspx?aid=21

Information from the BB Texas people about the hard hat tour:

Mr. Stevens,

On behalf of Stan Adams and myself, allow me to welcome you aboard the TEXAS and let you know how pleased we will be to guide your Hard Hat Tour on Friday, October 10. Stan and I will be your lead tour guides, and we will also have at least two other volunteers assisting us. We are all members of the First Texas Volunteers (FTV), the only volunteer group authorized by Texas Parks and Wildlife to serve aboard the ship.

Just want to provide a few tips to make your group’s visit more enjoyable. You probably have already received some or all of this information from Barbara Graf, but it bears repeating. Share this information as you feel appropriate:

Please plan to arrive on time (we are expecting the group to start at 0830) so we have sufficient time to access all of the spaces on the itinerary
Wear sturdy lace-up shoes
Bring a flashlight. All of the spaces we visit are usually lit, but Hurricane Ike may have created some issues. Also – there will be some dark corners you might want to peek into.
Bring gloves and a camera if you wish. If possible, use belt clips or shoulder straps (or big pockets) to keep your hands free for climbing.
We will navigate 34 ladders on the tour – individuals with mobility challenges must be aware of this.
People fearful of heights or confined spaces may also be challenged.

Our first concern is for your safety – and our second is to ensure y’all have a wonderful time and leave with a new – or renewed appreciation for the Battleship TEXAS and her place in history.
Stan and Barbie will be out of pocket this weekend, but feel free to call me or direct any questions you may have my way.
Again, we look forward to meeting you all next week. Travel safe.
Thank you!

Cool. I've shot those. Mine is a 1903 Springfield, the famous WWI 'Ought-three', and not a replica. Well, I guess it could be called that, after all. It was manufactured by Remington, on license, in September 1942. Shoots good old .30-06, as well it should, being the gun that ammunition was designed for in the first place.

Greetings Kaluens, from Nashville TN!

Took a stroll in downtown Nashville, was interesting. Ate at Joes crabshack was quite yummy.

U 765 has been averaging 30mpg at flank speed. Was stopped by allied patrol in Virginia :o (a Sgt. from some small county sheriffs office) I showed him my former NY polizei papers and he let me go with a warning. " I clocked you at 80mph 1 mph less than reckless, but Ill let you go with a verbal warning. Slow it down for us. Have a nice day." phew... avoided depth charging. I doubt Ill make the whole trip without something.... :hmm:

How do I improve the image? Better webcam?

Clean the lens! :)

Entirely depends on the megapixel of your webcam but:

Click Messenger and select "My Webcam." Click Messenger again, and this time, select Preferences.
Click Webcam, then at the top, click Camera Settings. You can also use the slider under “Broadcast my webcam with” to choose your balance between faster-speed transmission vs. higher-quality image.
When you’re done, click Apply, then OK at the bottom of the window.

Note: Accessing Preferences without first clicking “My webcam” will gray out the camera settings & selection button.

Hope it helps.

P.S See your other Webcam thread for website streaming help.

Edit - You're currently streaming @ 3.5 frames/s and using about 45 kbits/s, so you can afford to increase the allowance.
