It's been taken off Yahoo IM for the moment, I pointed Neal to some Webcam Streaming Freeware so he could host it on the SS servers for all to see, so he's probably tackling that at the moment.:|\\

Looking here http://www.weather.com/outlook/travel/businesstraveler/local/77030 I'd say no jacket required. It looks like it will be warm enough without it.

Dr Phil, am I over packing or will that be enough?

And will we be building the rumored R/C submarine test pond in Neal's yard?:hmm:

We spent about 4 hours today touring the battleship USS Texas. The special "hardhat" tour Neal arranged took us places the public doesn't get to see.

It was great meeting everyone there! I had a lot of fun, and my wife did too!

I cant divulge any discussions from the subsim meeting which revolved around any Silent Hunter Related mods, or any new releases of submarine simulations be them real or fictional.

I cannot confirm nor deny the development of SH5 or any upcoming release... real, or fictional.

Sorry... I'll say no more on the matter.

Enjoyed meeting everyone!!

Today we met bright and early at Seawolf Park to volunteer for clean-up duty post-Hurricane Ike.

During the storm surge, a shipping container full of vintage naval equipment floated away and broke apart about one-half mile down shore.

Got home a little over an hour ago. Had a great time, but had to leave to take care of some work after the developer discussion. Can't get over what a great time given how much we didn't get to do. Can't wait to make a trip back to continue assisting in getting the Cavalla back in condition and to scream around Texas Texas with Neal on our motorcycles. Neal and I had also spoken about doing a little Dangerous Waters multiplayer on the next trip, so if we do anyone interested in joining us hone up your skilz because once I train Neal and the Houston area guys up we will be kicking some major butt!

Hi all! This is the first chance I've had to post since we got here. Yesterday we went to Seawolf Park, looked at Cavalla and Stewart, and spent the morning cleaning up stuff. A big shipping container holding all the collected ship parts and accessories had blown about half a mile down the road and ended up a twisted wreck. Two of our younger members climbed inside and passed muddy pieces out to us. The rest combed the beach for whatever we could recover. We found quite a bit, and they seemed pretty happy with our work.

We went to lunch, and I was lucky enough to be seated next to Captain Zeb Alford, who was XO of the Cavalla during the period when she was converted to be one of the first experimental attack subs. He had a lot of good stories to tell.

Those of you logged onto the webcam got to watch - last night we had a question-and-answer session with Dan (Elanaiba). He asked specific questions about how we'd like to see things implemented in the future, and what we'd like to see. It was fun. Dan's a great guy.

I'll post a full report from my point of view when I get home.

I am 41 ... what were you expecting a bunch o' pimply faced teenagers? :rotfl:

All joking aside we have an excellent mix of folks here. I only wished more of you could have come. The texas HH Tour was fantastic. The ship really is in pretty decent shape for her age. And the tour guides were quite knowledgable but at the same time humble enough to learn from some of there more esteemed tourees (of which I am NOT one most of the tech stuff just wizzed over my head).

Anyways BBQ today, which will be fun, not only to I get to pick the brains of my colleagues but stuff my face with Texas BBQ as well.

Oh I have to post this my fav pic of the Texas Trip....left to right (SailorSteve, NealStevens, Undersealncpl)

MANY MANY MANY Thanks for having us. I knew I would enjoy myself but had only hoped I would find you and the rest of the guys to be up to the image I had built in my mind. In fact everyone surpassed my expectations by far. I feel humbled to be part of two of the greatest internet communities in existence. Subsim and the OctopusOverlords (http://www.octopusoverlords.com) which is a forum formed by refugees from the fall of GoneGold a few years back. I have often feared the end of submarine simulation was on the horizon, but with a community like this I can't imagine how that could happen.

How about a bunch of pictures identifying all the perpetrators? Sure would be great for those of us who missed it to see what everyone looks like!

Wish I could have been there to talk about SH5. SH4 is just at the playability takeoff point and Ubi's business model demands they get another infusion of cash by shooting it down, while yet again reinventing the wheel. It is SO hard for me to see any good coming of that. They're insisting on pushing a rope and wondering why they don't get good results. It's time to break the mold of kiddie popcorn FPS games and make a new business model that actually works with simulations of quality.

Hint: simulations are played for years. FPS and RPG games are played for weeks until the kid beats the game and then discards it. The business model that doesn't reflect that reality is destined to fail. Customers are left unhappy and the game company realizes a small fraction of the revenue the game is capable of producing. All of us lose.

Don't reinvent, refine! Don't reinvent the game, reinvent the business model! Simulations are not video games. They can't be produced like them. They can't be sold like them. Well they can, but everybody loses when they are.

@Privateer! LOL mate love the captions.

Just got into San Francisco. Gonna be stateside for another couple of days on business, but will have some time to visit USS Pampinito and the Jerimiah O'Brien whilst I'm here. Want to get the gen on some targets!:arrgh!:

http://www.maritime.org/pamphome.htm
http://www.ssjeremiahobrien.org/

then a 12 hour flight back home.:dead:

Got to say it was truly a memorable trip if nothing else for the infamous limo hijaking and the Lehmann proof door. A corker of a visit Neal and yes I will check out an itinerary for an Aussie Subsim meet for a couple of years from now.

Want to give everyone some time to save up for the trip.

RR, I think you can calm down as long as you haven't seen anything official from UBI yet.

What did you do to fill the 10 hours??? Holy mackeral, is there enough magazines out there to cover 10 hours? It is a cool tattoo! I like the Newcastle emblem as a tattoo. The 10 hours was just the Atlanic portion of the flight.

I flew from Newcastle @09:10 to Heathrow, then Heathrow to Houston arriving @17:30 Texan time (including the 6 hours time difference = 14h 20m. (TarJak coming from Aussie had an extra 3 or 4 hours travel time).

Then more or less the same return.

The inflight entertainment was first class....I watched a couple of films (Hancock and the latest Indiana Jones) a few episodes of Friends, played a few albums from the selection on offer and the latest BBC World News.

You'd be suprised how quickly the flight goes over if you don't fall into the trap of constantly watching the GPRS (position, distance, time etc.) in the seat ahead of you.

First time to the USA for me and well worth the effort.

I met a lot of people I was desperate to meet, made a boat load of friends and cemented a few already existing relationships.

On behalf of the 4 Grey Wolves who attended I am more than happy to say that the warmth, friendship and hospitality afforded to us was second to none.

I'm looking forward to seeing Pegasus when done....I contemplated having the green laughing swordfish on a forearm but decided it was a little OTT and took a few badges over for Neal and co instead LOL

Here's the fotball one from the left bicep.

Just a lot of history between our two countries and I would like to visit all the places in the books I read on the subject specifically concerning WW2. I would like to view my Uncles name in the book contained in West Minister Abby. The UK is rich in history and in comparison to the US, we are just babes in the woods.

Myself, I'm actually wondering if we can have a meet somewhere on the US East Coast or Midwest for 2010. I mean, there's just so many boats and other historical ships to choose from here, a meeting somewhere in this region could probably land us on several different ones even just in the course of one weekend. I have suggested that (New England) before, myself. "Old Ironsides", the battleship Massachusetts, and my old boat would make a great set of tours. All we need is for someone in the area to volunteer to set up a meet.

Could be a 'spring' meet, in between this year's Houston & next year's in Denmark.

Too bad Sonalysts aren't active in the game business anymore, otherwise we could twist their arms to sponsor a meet.

Do you mean the Tribal class HMCS Haida in Hamilton here in Canada? That's less than a half-hour drive from me (and about a 50-minute drive from Buffalo, not counting the border crossing). I'm thinking I'll visit that pretty soon.
Buffalo itself has a pretty good collection - Gato-class USS Croaker, as well as a Fletcher and a Cleveland class CL.

Personally, of course, I'd rather have an excuse to travel a little further afield and see the subs I wouldn't normally be able to just drop by and visit :)

I was talking to Neal about an Aussie meet in 2010. Need to check out some venues for activities but we should be able to sort something out. I know it's a long way to come but with two years notice and if you plan to spend some time around the meet checking out some of the other down under delights, I'm sure we might be able to tempt a few of you out of the colder northern climes to pay us a visit.

Nope, no surviving River-class boats that I know of. There's only a Tribal and a Flower in Canada (the latter being on the East Coast), and I'd be certainly surprised if the Americans kept any. I don't think either of the Rivers that served with the USN survived.

And yep, the 'internet people' from this sort of a circle are almost always a lot more fun to meet in person than one might expect!

Greetings Kaluens,

U765 has finally returned to home port, and after 4000 miles of driving she and her crew are ready for some much needed rest and refit.

Possibly later this evening I will post my pics.

It was great meeting everyone finally.... Kudos to Neal for managing the whole thing.
Anyways will be posting soon... Don't worry Sailor Steve I will leave all photos of the Texas with no description and you will have to ID them! :arrgh!: (which I have no doubt that you will be able to do quite successfully)

Pleased to hear your safely berthed Mike....best wishes to Cathy http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/thumbsup.gif

Ok able to do this earlier than I thought I will try my best not to post to many similar pics to what has already been posted. (no guarantees!)

I will start off the BB Texas shots. I tried to take shots of the gauges and gadgets for the tech folks out there and less of the touristy stuff.

As I said before I will not label ALL the photos but will number them so Sailor Steve can have fun try to guess what shots are where, etc.

Oh yeah, and put me down for Copenhagen!

Okay, here we go!

1. 3" mount on the starboard side, right beside #3 14" turret.

2. Stack of shells on display. Can't tell the location or size from the picture, but I'm guessing 14" or else people would be picking them up and carrying them around.

3. In the covered 5" gun room. Those are 5" shells they're looking at.

4. Who knows? A corridor is a corridor. Of course we can all see the sign that says 'Cafeteria', so that's one thing there.

5. Ship's machine and fabrication shop. On a ship that big they have the ability to make new parts when needed.

6. I could be misremebering, but I think that's the ladder that took us down to the Handling Room level. You can't see it, but just to the left as you climb down is the original ladder, which is just rungs welded onto the bulkhead.

7. Handling Room. That's where the shells and powder are loaded into hoists to be carried up to the turret. We're looking at the access ladder that leads up to the next level, where everything is transferred to yet another hoist for safety from an explosion in the turret.

8. UnderseaLcpl and some old sailor in the powder room. The powder bags were stacked in the cradles James is stepping in.

9. Our Guide demonstrating the powder bags. Full of powder they weighed 105...125...a lot!

10. Our Guide showing us the powder safety doors between the powder handling room and the main handling room. The powder bag is placed into the cradle and the door closed. The bell is rung, indicating that it is safe to open the door on the other side.

11. The safety door control lever.

12. The other side of the safety door, in the main handling room.

13. One of the shell rooms. You can see the shells stacked vertically, nose down, and the hoist for moving the 1250-pound shells.

14. The shell hoist. You can see how someone might slip and drop the shell before the chain was attached, causing the dimples we saw in the 1/2" steel deck.

And that's the magazine, shell and handling rooms.:sunny:

1. A very bad profile of me in the steering room.

2. UnderseaLcpl (James) shows how a marine does it.

3. They expect me to steer this thing all by myself?

4. The Terrible Trio pretends they're actually doing something.

5. Steering room switches and plug-in stuff. Hey, I don't know everything!

6. Just what it says. When you speak into a sound-powered phone, the sound waves actually generate a current that carries to the listener. Kind of an advanced tin-can-and-string system.

7. HEY! There's no seven!:dead: Yeah, I saw the note at the bottom, but I had to act offended anyway.

8. Our Guide explaining the steering room, as his Follower and Dano1 listen. The Follower is just that - she goes last, makes sure that nobody gets lost, and keeps the guide on schedule. Those guys tend to start talking about their subject and never stop...kind of like me.

9. James looks at some switches somewhere. "They're bakelite, so don't touch them - they're very easy to break!"

10. Crew bunks. They're everywhere, and where they aren't there still are hooks where they used to be. The ship was designed for a crew of about 800, and during World War Two she carried 1800. No extra space at all on that old tub!

11. The brig. Yes, the doors on the right that look like big lockers are actually the cell doors. Our guide told us that in that brig the inmates were given bread, water and a bucket. That's it. You don't want to go there, except as a tourist.

12. A corridor that goes nowhere. Storage, I would guess.

1. The little door I described in my thread. Coming out James was the only one who even tried swinging through it 'Das Boot' style. He actually managed to do it.

2. The very steep ladder down to the #2 Boiler Room.

3. Boiler inspection ports. The starboard half of the Boiler Room is completely restored, while the port half is in its old rusty state.

4. The boiler room gets very hot, so of course there's a drinking fountain. Most of the working spaces we saw didn't have one; at least one that I noticed.

5. More switches and junction boxes.

6. Boiler control valves. The black hoses are the fuel oil lines leading into the heaters.

7. The unrestored half of the Boiler Room.

8. Heat guages. They left off a zero for easy reading - the red line is three thousand degrees. The small guage is the pressure guage, and its red line is 400 pounds per square inch.

9. Engine telegraph in the boiler room. As I said in my thread, the bridge tells the boiler room what speed to set, the boiler crew sets the pressure and then tells the engine room what revolutions to set.

10. Close-up of the engine telegraph.

1. Obviously another pressure guage.

2. Oh, cool! Radio Room stuff!

3. Honest-to-goodness teletype machine. Rather than waste time with a telegraph key, you type your message on the typewriter, and it punches holes in a roll of paper tape. You then run the tape back through the machine and it prints out on a sheet of paper. When it's perfect you then insert the paper tape into the transmitter. It reads it and sends it in Morse code, at about 120 words per minute. A machine on the recieving end prints it out for you.

4. Yet another ladder leading down to yet another dark but important place.

5. I give up. I have no idea what that is. Some kind of control box, obviously.

6. Golden Rivet admiring more ancient guages, this time in Central Control.

7. Our Guide explaining Central Control, and how all fire control solutions are plotted there.

8. The switchboard that controls electrical power throughout the ship. We were told not to touch them, partly because they are old and brittle and easy to break, and partly because for some as-yet unknown reason power comes on sometimes to different switches. Nobody knows for sure where it's coming from, but sometimes any given switch will be live, and can give a nasty shock to anyone who touches it.

9. Access ladder from Central Control to the Damage Control Center.

10. Electrical guages.

11. Knot meter ('Pitometer'). Funny that it goes so high - the ship's absolute maximum speed was 21 knots, and by World War Two she was lucky to make 15.

12. Ship's draft (obviously). The current draft is 23 feet. The minimum allowable draft is 17 feet - any less and the ship might capsize. Maximum is 40 feet - any more and water is coming in the lower gunports.

13. A handwritten note that's been there for 45 years! Apparently that compartment was hot enough that sailors liked to dry their clothes there.

14. Designed by Rube Goldberg. It's too close to tell, but it looks like the direction-transfer gears from the second steering wheel in the Damage Control Center.

1. Just another hatch. For anybody who doesn't know, a hatch always leads up through the overhead (ceiling) or down through the deck. If it goes sideways through a bulkhead (wall) it's a door. It may be a watertight steel door, but it's still a door. That alway bugged me watching JAG - whenever someone wanted to have a private meeting they would always say "Shut the hatch." Had me throwing popcorn at the TV screen.

2. Looking up from the starboard side of #2 14" turret. In the middle left is a quad-40mm AA gun. Above on the right is the back end of the turret, sitting atop its raised barbette. The cylindrical object barely visible behind the turret is the armored conning tower, where the ship is controlled from during sea combat. Above and behind that is the bridge, and up on the tripod is the main Fire Control Center, where the guns are aimed from.

3. 3" anti-torpedo boat gun. It's about the same size as the 8.8cm gun on a Type VII u-boat, but sits higher so the gunners can be seated while they work.

4. 3" gun from behind. You can see the gunners' seats. On the left is the training seat, with wheels to turn the gun right and left. On the right is the elevating seat, which wheels to raise the gun up and down. All done by hand.

5. Elevating operator's gunsight.

6. Same gun, from a little further back.

7. Looking down from the starboard aft bridge wing, at a 3" gun and a quad-40mm AA gun.

8. Looking forward from the starboard bridge wing. To the left can be seen the #2 turret, with #1 turret barely visible below it. To the right is another quad-40mm mount, and in the background is the San Jacinto battle monument, important because that battle created the independant Republic of Texas.

9. Rangefinder mount. From this position the Secondary Fire Control Officer would give orders to the 5" and 3" gun captains for longer range firing.

10. Looking aft from the port bridge wing. To the left is the funnel (smokestack). To the right is the port boat crane. Behind the stack is the main ventilator housing, for getting air into the boiler and engine rooms. Behind that is #3 turret, and behind that is the aft fire control position.

11. Looking forward from the port bridge wing. To the right is a quad-40mm mount, and next to it the port secondary rangefinder mount. Below is a 3" gun, another quad-40mm mount and a single 20mm mount. To the right can be seen the armored conning tower and both forward turrets.

12. The rear of the bridge, with some actual combat helmets and flak vests.

13. Steve and Rip trying hard to look like they belong on the bridge of a 94-year-old battleship.

14. Looking down from the bridge over the forward turrets at the front end...what's that called again? Oh yeah, the pointy part.

15. Straight-forward view of the bow, with the San Jacinto monument in the distance.

Of course I had a stroke when the range safety put me at a firing point with a 25 yard target. Being the lazy ex lawman I am, all my training courses of fire (both NYPD and INS) were 7yds 15yds 25yds. With the max rounds at the 7yd line.

After about 300 rounds of .45, I spent about an hour cleaning my gun at Neals BUT since I ran out of Q-tips it required an additional 40 minutes more when I returned home. :o

Thank god for Chads dad Kyle, he was the one who spotted the stop rods slot in the slide rod. My Kimbers a new gun to me I had only broken it down once b4. It looks like a standard 1911 commander (with some shmancy coloring and other assorted accoutrements) but internally there are definitely some differences.

Overall it was a fun day with a minimal amount of sweating required. Unfortunately team GWX was too "Shell Shocked" to attend. :rotfl:

Ha! For all my teasing you about it, you still shot better than me at 25 yards!!

Overall it was a fun day with a minimal amount of sweating required. Unfortunately team GWX was too "Shell Shocked" to attend. :rotfl:

"Shell shocked" is the right word....we were devastated when we found out we couldn't use our 37mm twins or even our single 20mm http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/8739/shootingsmilie2fw8.gif

....and where were the low flying Hudsons we were promised overflew at that time of day http://imgcash2.imageshack.us/img134/9742/angry8se2.gif

Nice shots BTW Mike (every pun intended) http://www.thecomicforums.com/forum2//style_emoticons/default/suicide_anim.gif http://imgcash3.imageshack.us/img412/4774/thumbsuplargeon1.gif
