Is it really true that members that donates >30$ will get the Almanac 2008 for FREE ?

:hmm: And where did this rumor come from?

I also read something about that, I think it was in the sticky anouncement of the almanac, but I can't find it anymore.

Well, the almanac + delivery is 30-35$ IIRC, so might be true. Who knows.

Thank you for this exciting development. I am a newcomer to SH3 and was considering downloading GWX 1.04. I will now wait for your release on 9th December.
A couple of questions:
* What size is the file?
* Now that it has been reviewed and compressed, is it smaller than the 700mb> that was GWX 1.04?
* Is it therfore possible to obtain it on CD (could someone burn me a copy for a commercial consideration) rather than labouriously download it?
Await your advice.
Thanks.

That is true, the announcement post is still listed in the General Topics forum. Any GWX donation of $30 or more during the Dec 9 - 15th release window will score the newly released, action packed 2008 Submarine Almanac (http://www.subsim.com/almanac08/). The book that caused Tom Clancy to remark, "It's not fair." So, get in on the initial release of GWX 2.0, get a great submarine book to read, and support Subsim, all in one motion.

Also, an anonymous skipper has pledged $50 to Subsim, he will sponsor 5 guys who want to get in on the initial download donation of GWX 2.0. So, if you are a little short of $$ but would love to be sinking Tommie and the Yanks on Day 1, post your name here. First five will be added to the List.

cheers and thanks for the support--the GW gang have gone a long way toward replenishing the Subsim coffers

Very gracious herr Kaleun. If OneLifeCrisis has not already donated, I nominate him in my place due to his contrubution in time through his GUI mod. Otherwise, I would enjoy playing GWX early.

I don't care if this gets me banned.

BLODDY BASTARDS!!!

This is why no one attends the Grey Wolfs Den anymore. You'we all been working on GWX 2.0. I remember when the Kapt. sent me a PM one year ago and told me I'd be on the GWX Beta team. I couldn't believe my eyes. It seems like a long past memory. I have betrayed the Kapt. trust and went into shadows. I left the SubSim community, as I can't keep an interest for very long (and Danlisa was beeting me in my unofficial "who's gonna post more" contest).

I'm glad you guys have made such progress and I'm sorry I haven't spent more of my time with you as I remember you all as a very friendly and warm bunch (let us not forget funny).

Lost have been the days since my eyes last saw SH3. I still have GWX Beta installed and I remember my seasickness post. Ah! those were the days. Looks like life has other plans for us afterall.

I wish you all my best and I do hope that with the final and stable version done, the group will not fall apart and that the bonds you have created will not dissapear. Such an action would be a shame for the entire SubSim community.

I wish you and all other Kaleuns a peacefull ride and calm seas (with no DDs and fat convoys).

I salute to you all.

In the meantime, feel free to hit Vista with a hammer... a time or ten.

Okay, here is what we've got for Windows Vista matters:

Installing under Windows Vista

Perform the following steps if you are installing GWX in a Windows VistaŽ environment, assuming

you have already executed Steps 1 and 2 in the
Basic Installation procedure:

1. Unistall
Silent Hunter III

2. Delete the residual
Silent Hunter III installation folder and all contents

3. Delete (or at least rename) your “MyDocuments\SH3” save game folder
4. Delete the “C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\SilentHunterIII”
folder and all its contents, if it exists.
5. Reinstall

Silent Hunter III. The GWX Team recommends you install it outside of the “\Program

Files” folder
6. Right-click the 1.4b patch “.exe” file and select “Run as administrator”
7. Install the patch
8. Verify you installed the patch correctly by running the game.
9. If the game fails to run, download and install the StarForce Vista update from the StarForce
developers’ site:

http://www.star-force.com/support/sfdrvup.zip.

10. You can now run optional tools like
SH3 Commander, JSGME, SH3Gen, etc. provided you run

them as an “Administrator” after you have installed them.
The GWX team recommends reading up on the Microsoft Vista “User Account Control” and “File
Virtualization” features for greater familiarity with Windows Vista system security issues that may
affect Silent Hunter III.

I don't use Vista myself, however we do have members that can help you get sorted if you have problems.

The manual will be released a few days prior to the GWX 2.0 launch date. It will give you a little time to make any necessary preparatory adjustments.

If you continue to have problems. Just stay in touch via the Silent Hunter III forum here. We'll get you running.

You can get the patch from here mate http://www.silent-hunteriii.com/uk/updates.php just make sure you use the correct one depending on what sort of game you own. Read the instructions and if you have any problems give us a shout

Good news!! I can't wait for this, and I will probably donate and get it early (if the wife lets me). One question, how is it going to work for the ones that have 1.04 installed? Is there a patch to get it to 2.0 or must we uninstall and reinstall everything again?

As it was mentioned before once the game is ready for downloading a full set of analytical instructions will be provided. Nevertheless having a CLEAN patched (1.4v) copy of SH3 is not going to hurt you ;)

GWX 2.0 will not be a patch. It is a full new game so be prepared for many new and wonderful things

1 question: Will this new GWX slow my computer? I play SH3 with low details, but It runs well.

1 answer: If you can play SH3 and you meet the recomended specifications of the game (1GB RAM, 128MB Graphics) then you should be OK. If you have less that 1GB of RAM you can still play it but you might see some reduction in frame rates.

Neal, if you'd be so kind to allow me to get the early release of 2.0, I'll gladly throw 10.00 subsim's way on the 12th of Dec.

Sadly, Johnnie Law came to the conclusion I may of had one too many "Barley Pops" recently, and it cost me dearly to check out of my Counties finest .001 star hotel, so I'm a bit short currently. But I sure would like to get a look at this Jewel as soon as possible!

Harry:cry:

It will fit on either two CD's or one DVD. (I recommend DVD... compressed GWX 2.0 raw files equal out to roughly 970mb. IIRC... subject to change without notice.)

IIRC, Subsim used to offer a mods DVD/disk for donations... but it would need to be updated if that is still an option.

A great idea, and to show my support I have just sent off $25 to support SubSim. With the Canadian dollar near parity with the U.S dollar, it only cost me a few extra pennies to make my donation in U.S. currency. Christmas is coming early this year, thanks to the GWX team and SubSim. Even though I am out of work at the moment and money's tight in my household, I was still able to scrape a few dollars from our budget for such a satisfactory product.

I have reached October 41, Are the changes in GWX 2.0 enough to make it worth while starting a completely new career in 39. I'm stuck in the position of being not being close enough to the start of the war to make it an easy decision to start again, and not too far into the war to make it completely out of the question. I have a new IXC which I am very reluctant to give up :-?

Damm this cruel world's sphericity!

Sphericity....now there's a sexy word.

Apparently this is the sphericity of the world where Ψ is sphericity and a, b refers to semi
major and semi minor axes.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/math/f/2/6/f268c95b6388dc2002a77bc7224c190d.png

If the world had a sphericity of zero then we would have the GWX manual by now.
On the down side the earth would be 2 dimensional and there would be no gravity.

I suppose what I am trying to say is that I can't wait for the manual and that I love the GWX team.

Quick question as I am getting things ready for 2.0. I had the previous version, which I uninstalled. Then I installed SH3, and patched and that's ready to go. Do I need to uninstall SH3 Commander as well, and then reinstall once I have GWX 2.0 installed, or does the install I currently have of Commander will do? Thanks!

Jimbuna
12-06-07, 09:57 AM
Commander is a standalone programme.....but for 100% certainty and by way of an example, I took no chances and am running GWX 2.0 with a fresh Commander install. :arrgh!:

Hey guys,

I have been too busy lately to read the threads thoroughly and I wasn't able to read the manual yet. My question is: have the AI subs from Privateer (those able to submerge) get into the final release of GWX 2.0?

Thank you and sorry for my ignorance. :)

Sorry to ask this question (MAYBE IS STUPID)
IS GWX 1.04 different from GWX 2.0?????

Madox58
12-06-07, 06:09 PM
GWX 1.04 was code name of GWX 2.0

TarJak
12-06-07, 06:11 PM
No question is stupid unless it is not asked. GWX1.04 has been renamed to GWX2.0 because instead of being a simple patch to GWX1.0n, it is a full version release due to the extent of changes from GWX 1.03.

This will mean you need a clean patched SHIII install and you will not be able to install it over GWX1.0n.

Has the donation period for GWX 2.0 begun, and if so where would I find it ?
Everyone seems so excited about it, I thought I might give it a try.
Thanks

If the skins are contained within a .dat file, then no they are not compatible... though they may function if you don't mind losing GWX improvements like the "conning tower of death" fix... 3D model improvements etc.

If the textures are extracted from the .dat file and placed in the SilentHunterIII/data/Textures/TNormal/tex folder, the engine will read them with no problems.

I just d/led the manual, I gotta say it scares the living hell out of me, mostly because right now I am tired of readnig manuals(Read a to of flight sim manuals that drove me nuts) and it scares the living jesus out of me.

Would you say that it's vitally necessary to read the entire manual to be able to be decent at GWX2.0?

There is some vitally important info regarding installation & mods etc.

However, unless you want to read it while on long patrols, I would just use it as a gameplay reference if you have a question/query about any aspect of GWX.

You know, like the usual questions you see popping up around here?
Why do the Escorts keep spotting me?
Why do I keep dying?
Why is 1939 hard for me?
What is this death that keeps raining on me from the sky?

LOL, if it has been asked, it's in the manual.;)

Why now the contacts dosent have their colors (You know, a warship haved a red line, friendly ships were blue, etc, etc) in GWX???? (In reality, thats the only thing that I miss...)

Well, in our opinion, it makes the game too easy.

During testing, we tried putting them back in but whenever I got a hydrophone contact of an enemy warship, I just turned away from it.

Having them coloured removes the need to identify the vessel, just like the real kaleuns had to. We've even removed the directional tails of contacts now and made the hydrophone lines dashed, so that you don't exactly know where the contact is.

There might be an unofficial mod made available after release which adds the coloured contacts & tails back into the game.

The contacts are grey ? Remember - GWX is one of the best big expansions
because authors brings to us as much REALISM as they can.
REALISM of u-boot battlefield during WWII ! Do you think that u-boot captain

Although I started playing SH3 a few weeks ago, I did start with GWX rather than stock, so I'm used to having no colours for the contacts. However I don't feel ready yet to progress to, what is essentially, no update mode, with GWX 2.0.

It would be nice to keep current with the game version and have 2.0 though.

So I guess I'm unclear on what is mentioned here - "hydrophone lines dashed". I think means contact locations will be shown without 100% accuracy. But will those indications be updated as they move?

Apologies if I should have read this somewhere. Once again the manual is fantastically put together and is a massive work in itself. The 1.3 version would be a very interesting read for someone who doesn't even have SH3! So far, I've only skimmed the 2.0 version, mostly, reading some parts in detail.

This post is in no way questioning why 2.0 was developed this way - the GWX team are beyond any questioning when you consider the commitment they've made on so many levels. I'd merely like to be clear on this item so I know if I'm ready to enjoy their latest and last gem.

Yes - you got the right - too much aggressive and now i'm sorry for that.:-?
Just lost patience - we waited for new GWX expansion for very long time
and now when this is detected by sonar there are posts with doubts and questions : why this, why that...
I take GWX like a ...word of oracle. This is new core and there will be new
hundreds of mods around this core - like always and i don't worry about that.

So I guess I'm unclear on what is mentioned here - "hydrophone lines dashed". I think means contact locations will be shown without 100% accuracy. But will those indications be updated as they move?

There is still enough information displayed on the screen for you to play as you see fit.:yep:

What we have done is, remove the direction tails of the contacts but this is only at higer zoom levels, when you zoom in, you will be able to see the direction of travel.

The Hydrophone lines are dashed/broken so that they do not give a 100% accurate distance reading anymore, however, they do still give 100% accurate bearing and are continually updated.

If you try to put yourself in the hydrophone operators seat for a moment, could you hear a contact over your headphones and instantly say, hmm, that is a Small Merchant and it's exactly 2324m away?;) We just tried to remove some of the accuracy from the game, just like RL.

The bottom line of this change is that casual players will still be able to play how they want but the more hardcore players will see the added realism. We have always strived to keep GWX playable for all levels of interest.

Sometimes a thank you dosen't seem to say it all but personally I would like to Thank you to all of the GWX Dev members & especially to Neal Stevens as had it not been for his creation of Subsim.com, GWX may never have came into reality

There is still enough information displayed on the screen for you to play as you see fit.:yep:

This has probably already been answered, but I'll ask anyways.. Can you use your current career with 2.0, or is it best to start over? I know when i loaded up 1.2 (i'm still running that), i used the original one from SH3 (stock) and it worked fine.

Just curious.. can't wait.. how about you release it early

We are releasing it one week early to donators.

Today I am finishing up the uploads to Subsim.com and then we will DL it to check for data corruption.

Sorry mate, the schedule is there for more than one reason.

The manual mentions new skin packs, does this mean that the previous skin packs for capital ships, destroyers, escorts and merchants are no longer required.

The skins that are contained in the final GWX 2.0 download are superior to the ones currently available as separate packs.

This was part of the reason why we decided to release a full new version rather than a update installer.
