Okayyyy... Where to begin.

As most of you are aware from the GWX developmental update sneak peak threads we've posted over the last few months... we have been working on our final release of the Grey Wolves Expansion for SH3.

Only until now, we had referred to it as the "Version 1.04 update."

About three months ago as we experienced a great deal of pain knowing what we could do, but weren't doing out of concern for the size of an 'update' myself and the senior GWX devs basically decided that since this would be our last organized release for SH3... that we would END THE PARTY WITH A BANG!

GWX 1.04 has basically been a thin cover for a final FULL-GENERAL release... GWX 2.0 will not be an 'update' but instead will totally replace all previous GWX material.

In so doing, we were able to reabsorb a lot of the file weight that was being generated by the original 1.04 update. We've been able to revisit large files previously modded by GWX and improve on them further still... without adding more to the total weight in some cases.

After undergoing roughly TEN evolutions from the alpha through beta states, I am happy to announce that development and testing of the GWX 2.0 mod files is COMPLETE and has yielded a stable mod.

Once these core files are placed in an installer by our programmer, the entire package will undergo a final round of testing to ensure it functions as planned.

Assuming all is well following the final installer tests, we hope to release GWX to Subsim.com on a donations only basis for one week on or about December 9th. All proceeds will go towards the upkeep and bandwidth charges for Subsim.com.

The one-week donations period is being established as a salute to Neal Stevens and out of respect for his efforts in running Subsim.com as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of submarine and naval simulations.
All proceeds will go to the upkeep and maintainance of Subsim.com. Subsim.com depends on the good will of its members for continued existence.
No donations will line the pockets of Grey Wolves team members or other mod contributors.
The Grey Wolves Expansion is and will remain freeware and will be made more readily available to the community at large following the one week donation period. Neal Stevens has been our benefactor on more than one occasion during the production of GWX. In my opinion, it is the least we can do.

Following the one-week donation-only download period, we hope to release GWX 2.0 to the general public on December 16th. (As it so happens, December 16th is the one year anniversary of the initial release of GWX 1.0)

Barring real life disasters and unforseen problems... that is our plan.

I can speak for all of the GWX devs and testing crew here... It has been a very long and difficult road... and we've overcome challenge after challenge. There are few here that know what I mean. Each of them has sacrificed something and/or dealt with personal crisis' during the long fight to see it through.

Every one of them has my heartfelt gratitude.

From the first day of work on the original TGW 1.0 a little over two years ago, to now... GWX 2.0 will be our fourth major release.

Words escape me on how huge this feels for all of us. I know it is hard for users to be patient... but the amount of work that went into it will show. There aren't words that can adequately express the dedication that the developers and testing crew for the GWX 2.0 effort have put into the journey we've shared.

I take this to mean that all previous versions of GWX will be obsolete & we'll just load SH-3,1.4 patch & GWX 2.0 ?

Dear Santa

I know i have been wishing for many things over the past years, from a hottub filled with female supermodels, to a real VIIC u-boat.. Since you have problems delivering such items, due to lack of interest in my personal well-beeing, i hereby declare that i never will believe in you again.

BTW: I dont know if you have heard about the gang called the "GWX-Crew"; i'll guess you have'nt, since you are still using that old sled to deliver the presents instead of a milchkuh. I regret to inform you that there is a new Santa in town; Santa Lehmann. He delivers joyfull experiences to all of the children in the conning tower, and you are just an old fart compared to him & rest of the GWX-dev's.
So, my final words to you, ex-Santa:

Drop dead.

Kind regards

The AI remains unchanged from GWX 1.0. It will stay the same. I feel very strongly that we have a good thing going there... so no need to rework it. I'd rather slit my wrists than re-tune all those sensors anyway.

In terms of system specs... If you can run GWX today, you should be able to run GWX 2.0. Load times will be a touch longer naturally as we've added lots more more stuff. However, once the mission/campaign loads performance should be the same. We've been very careful to maintain it as such.

(Believe it or not, the only high-res/oversized textures in GWX are for the player U-boat interiors as they always have been. Its amazing to me what can be done with with stock texture sizes and ship skins.)

Thanks very much for that update. You really made my day. Sitting here in the job and being bored to tears and now reading this excellent news is almost to good to be true :)

In addition I might add, that I very much support your idea to get the Mod on the road for a donation period for subsim.com. I also wouldn't mind if you and the crew would get the donation money. You've MOOOORRRREEE than earned it.

The best people to ask would be the creators of those mods. Please remember, GWX is an expansion for SH3 1.4b not SH3 1.4b + 20 mods.;)

Of course, if the creators are not around any longer, we (the community) will help if we can.

GWX will come bundled with a selection of offically sanctioned mods, as it did in 1.0.

Will the original SH3 mods work with the new GWX2.0?

What can I say on the subject?

Two things really:
1) The aforementioned release dates WILL be excuse for me to get reaquainted with a cigar

and

2) For all the "when is GWX 1.04 ready?" comments we've all been reading...

ARE YOU HAPPY NOW?!?

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

One last important point. Thanks to Kpt. Lehmann for inviting me onto the team. Truly it was the finest invite I have ever received in a very long time. It ranks above some wedding invatations I've had. Thanks very much for having me. Its been fantastic to be here for the "BIG ONE" believe me, you won't be disapointed with GWX 2:up:

Most SH3 mods wouldnt work with 1.03
Some mods will need to be redone for 2.0 as a lot of work has gon into the dat files

What a fantastic effort yet again from the GWX team. Many thanks to Kpt.Lehmann and the whole GWX-team for this great mod. A great tribute and effort to thier work. I'm looking forward to it.

GWX 2.0 will surely be the end of the road for SH-III. It then is up to Ubisoft to plan and develop SHIII-V after the finished the update of SH-IV.

But for now: thank you all!!!

I doubt that

Plus there are still plenty of modders churning out new stuff for SH3 every week

And of course the now legendary ( infamous ?? ) merchant fleet mod by Iambecome to look forward to also

What can I say, except this reminds me so much of when I grabbed the first GWX. Penny told me that the end was nigh, but I dont think I believed her, after all this time I wasn't sure it was safe to! LOL I cannot wait to get going on GWX 2.0

I'll be going back to 1939 with both my ficitonal U-boat commanders and I think I can feel the inspiration to write these stories coming back already!

I just can't wait. I'm really excited, really really excited. Buying this game after watching a random YouTube video was one of the best things I have ever done in my entire life. that and downloading the Grey Wolves.

If it is not a Wolf, and not actually Grey, then I don't wanna know! :D

It was a long road, on that road I met good people.

I never expected to ever be suddenly PMed by the Kpt. here on subsim and invited to be the one of the newest testers, I was still really new to subsim, and New to GWX 1.03, now that Ive seen it from the inside, I know how much work and Dedication has been put into this, by everyone and now by myself and how friendships have been tested on the inside constantly.

I doubt theres more then a handful modding crews in existance thats this Dedicated to makeing something as Authentic as possible as this, im sure theres others but I can BE SURE theres at least one and thats the GWX crew.

I must of spent at least 300 hours just testing GWX 2.0, as I was brought in when so called "1.04" testing began, and even then it was long road.

I hope everyone enjoys the content I have helped test

It was an honor to work with such Dedicated people.
Come hell or high water we get it done. :arrgh!:

I want to clarify something here and now before speculation gets out of hand... and have updated the first post to match. (In orange no less.)

Hellas1, the donation timeframe lasts only one week. After that it will be available to all for free as I stated in my posts mate.

The only thing that may make it tough to get for a few days is the demand on host sites. We will put download mirrors up as necessary to handle the load / internet traffic.

Last year when we released GWX 1.0, keeping GWX accessible was very tough due to very high demand.

Everybody will be able to download it free after the first week, as the Kpt. said in his previous post, we have no intentions to profit with the mod, all we want to do is give Neal a hand with the maintenance of this forum, so the ones willing to donate a few bucks to subsim will get an early download link.

Thanks very much to the GWX team for all of the time & effort.

I have no problems at all donating a few bucks....I run my own site too and it gets expensive!

Will there be a minimum 'suggested' donation or just whatever you feel like contributing?

Congratulations to all of those who worked so hard on this program.

i dont know what else to do besides salute you all and your unwaivering dedication to this project.

excellent work!

I look forward to taking my U-boat out on a final career with 2.0

once the career has ended, i will likely retire SH3 to the loftiest place on my shelf-o-games where it will hold the highest position.

Out of all the "games" i have seen come and go over many years i can think of NO OTHER that has had such wonderful support from such an amazing community. I can think of NO OTHER which i have learned so much from, nor can i think of any other game which has inspired me to read, research, draw and learn as much as i could about any other field of conflict than this one.

SH3 was destined to be an instant classic the moment it hit the shelves... but the mod community, the GWX team, and the members of this forum have served to make it what it is today...

Long live SH3...
Long live GWX...
Long live subsim!

Oh yeah, very classy move to make the first week of downloading donations-only to Subsim. Neal et al. have made the community's best site and deserve all of our support. And this is a great way to give back to Subsim.

Drop dead.

AHA!!! That explains why I found this under my tree last year!!

Santa obviously got our addresses mixed up, I had asked for a Panther Tank last year.

And he did it wrong anyway. It's no Typ VII but a pre-production Typ II ;)

It figures, I didn't get my Panther either. Guess that's what happens when you get old, screw up everything.

*LOL*. Well when you consider, that the old guy has been around for over 150 years now, you can expect him to be a bit forgetful and mix something up on occasion. Still waiting for my model railroad as well :D

I hope the Subsim community will not be selfish and just take, take and take and I hope they give something back to Subsim (donation).

For many of you it will be strange to say "well what shall I do now" ? you maybe like me and say "hey...how about I play the game" ! I still today have not started one campaign due to modding.

I have been away for a while because I was forced into doing other things than subsimming and I find this great, great news.

The scope of this project is immense, as must have been the time invested by the entire mod team. I'm sure that it will be an overwhelming experience.....

I also think it is a great idea to make the mod available first on a donation-only basis. After all this is Neal's place and without him none of us would be here.

I can only humbly thank and salute everyone who was involved in this project.

Thanks guys!

I think that this is well worth a donation to Subsim running costs. As such, I fully intend to send a donation for the early release of this mod. I know I am reasonably new here, but well, I think its worth it. And if you have not got the fiscal capacity to spare anything, then, the mod is still there for all. so its win win! An excellent idea and I intend to support subsim.com on behalf of the Grey Wolves team.

Just a proposal for coping with the server's traffic load:
what about sharing the file to emule? (once released to the public)
Since we are quite a lot should be easy enough for everybody to get good download speeds.....
if such decision is made count me in for 24/7 uploading (even though i can give only 30kb/s due to my connection/router)

and finally many many thanx to all the gwx developing team!

Thank you, I was playing Das Boot (on 486), SH I, II and III till now, but GWX 1.03 was like SH VI for me:up:

With GWX 2.0 it will be a long time before I`ll play another subsim. Thank you all realy, I found that GWX has everything I missed during playing subsims, especialy favoring extreme realism ower arcade like shooting. Realistic games don`t have market, and you modders give that to us.

I know what a sacrifice of your time can modding be, since I tried that on a racecar sim, but even after countles hours didn`t come even over beta testing:damn: And I tried a small mod, not even a 0,0001% of what GWX is.
I know that you want a perfect game, but never get to enjoy it, since you know how it`s made, and know almost all from testing. Thank you again in my name, and in the name of those who won`t bother to say that here, and belive me, there are a lot more of those.
I probably won`t even play 1.03 till 2.0 is out, since I discovered GWX only recently.

And what do you guys do........
No question now, took my brand new V11B and headed straight to Scapa to see if I can celebrate in style before whacking in a donation to get V2.
It gets better....... on leave from the week before XMas to the 7th of Jan, I'll tell the wife I'm sailing early, the 9th sounds a good day to start and I'll see her and the kids when I dock, probably round about the, well, 7th January........:rotfl:

To all concerned. Please read ALL of the following from the first post, very closely, to remove any confusion.

To all, on behalf of the entire GWX Dev team and crew... thank you for your kind words and encouragement. Your good words are sincerely appreciated.

We appear to remain on schedule.

Attention all crew, please report back to the flotilla offices for briefing no later than this Saturday.

Eagerly await the release of GWX 2.0 and can't begin to imagine the enormous amount of time and expertise it has taken to produce such an awesome achievement. I for one will be readily donating for the upkeap of subsim. I recently was one of the many who donated to download the latest Radiohead album from their official site, and I see this as no different except, I will gleen far more enjoyment from GWX 2.0 than I ever could from a CD, my donation shall reflect that. (I assume it is a donate what you feel is right sort of basis, just as the Radiohead CD was?)

I realise the GWX team receive no financial reward for their hard work, so I can only hope that the great appreciation and admiration of us humble Kaleuns is adequate recompense for the effort you have all put in.

Well JCWolf, you are certainly entitled to your opinion.

However, I strongly disagree that it is 'unfair.'

I'm sure many have donated before.

However, if you like you can consider it to be like a car-wash fundraiser for Subsim.com.

On the streets, if you donate to one car wash... and come to another one later... ya still gotta donate right?

Besides, in just one week GWX 2.0 becomes readily available to all for free as we have promised... which makes the whole debate pointless. We have all waited months to see it... one more week won't kill anyone.

Anyway, the decision is made. I'm sorry that you feel it is unfair.

Hi! Thank you so much for the hard work that has obviously gone into this update/replacement of the earlier works. Let's talk turkey- what, as a previous donater to Subsim.com, should I expect to donate for this? No complaint should be construed from this, by the way; I've paid tubs for games that never panned out, and am much more willing to pay for a product that has a track record, as opposed to so much crap I've paid for that never panned out. I truly love SH3, as it is presently presented, and is patched/ modded. I want to know what you, the people who actually did the work, and put in the time for this, expect a person to pay for it. Sorry if this is overly capitalistic; but a person should be properly recompensed, in the way they choose, for the time they have expended doing something others will certainly take advantage of. Time is the only thing you cannot get back. So what, in your opinion, is fair recompense for what will surely be yet another great leap forward in this game we all bought 2 or more years ago?

Hi Cruiser,

Bottom line... Whatever you feel comfortable with... is good by us.

Just speaking a bit from my heart here: I don't think that GWX could really 'happen' in some corporate office somewhere. Quite naturally companies have to balance what a customer wants with profitablility. I think too that a corporate environment would have sucked the life and passion right from the GWX team's sails had 'profit' been involved.

Also, as challenging as it has been to flow around and over every problem we encountered along the way... no-one on the GWX team was ever really alone. It is difficult to explain, but a real sense of family-crew evolved with our guys and gal.

We have been paid by the journey itself... Even in bad times, our guys "shared their chow" with each other. One cannot buy that spirit. No office can reproduce it. GWX and Subsim are allowed to have personality.

Jimbuna knows what I speak of. He's talked with me on one of my darkest days... and somehow, someday, I am going to meet that man and shake his hand.

For some people here, five dollars could mean the difference between eating dinner or not on any given day... and if that man or woman sends that five dollars to keep the Subsim ship afloat, in my eyes... its as good as a million dollars.

For those Captains out there fortunate enough to be in a position to do more... it is appreciated no less. I think that for those guys, life is very difficult in other ways... and the escape from reality that SH3/GWX offers may be very important to them... to simply get through a day full of tough decisions.

Again just speaking for myself, I've needed the escape to be able to live with myself. I'm taking a break from the streets for awhile since I've gone back to school to get my Paramedic rating, but most of the time while I was working on GW/GWX, I was an EMT with my city's ambulance service. Being an EMT has placed me in terrible places. I remember coming home at least once, after literally deciding who would live and who would die on a bad rescue call. Logging on to the GWX and Subsim forums, allowed me to keep the ghosts at bay. I remember all of their faces. They'll steal your sanity if you don't find a way to live with them. This place and GWX may be keeping me from going nuts.

SH3/GWX and Subsim have been important for many of the team in different ways.

For some of us it has been a journey back in time, that allows us to see and feel a bit of what those who experienced the war saw and felt... albeit in a very limited sense.

It has been a place where many who would have been enemies in the past by national division, can meet as friends and equals... no matter what madness is going on in the world.

In these ways, and with the community here... it is quite a bit more than "just a game." It is that too... but I hope I've managed to convey the thoughts of more than just myself here.

Looking at it in these ways... GWX and Subsim are priceless.

This community cannot be allowed to die. There are none like it... anywhere else.

Otherwise, I don't know how to answer your question. For me it is impossible.

I think you need to speak with Neal about that, but in reality you can wait a couple of weeks before you do donate. On the other hand if you really want to give something to Neal you can always donate now and on 6/12 ;)

As a general not to everyone: As Kpt and Neal said SubSim is quite expensive to maintain and run, and without it GWX/NYGM/WAC and all the other mods that bring the community together would not exist. The one week donation period is arranged so that it gives something back to Neal and the community. I've read a lot of posts about how people cannot afford to pay for GWX. Although I do respect this view I do feel it's a donation, therefore you can give whatever you fancy. If there is a penny you can afford then go ahead and give it, every little help SubSim can get counts. If on the other hand you cannot afford to give a single penny, then having GWX one week later should not be the bigger problem you're facing at the moment, as obviously Real Life problems must be (sadly and unfortunately) more important to you. Having said that I've never donated in the past in SubSim for a number of reasons and I do feel I should. I will donate when GWX is out not to get the game (I will have it by the time it will reach this stage) but to give something back to this site and this community that help me a lot.

Other than that I don't really think there is anything more to be said on the matter. Let's stop arguing about the donation period and GWX and let's enjoy the game we all like and the community spirit.

For me its a win, win situation. I will be traveling from Hobart to Brisbane during the release of GWX 2.0 with the car loaded with the wife, kids and a Alaskan Malamute as well as a trailer load of crap to move to our new home. I will donate prior to leaving this hillbilly backward six fingered banjo Island (Tasmania and never to return) and when I reset my game station up in my new location; GWX 2.0 will (hopefully) be here.

So I'm happy. :smug:

but I just donated 2 weecks ago, and it's also reasenable
that when I wash my car or pay for it, I will not do it again
in the next day ( Thought its not a good compare)...

I am for sure on the side of helping SS that gav us lots
in the past years and still gives, but I do notthink that
making what it's called a free Mod an exchange subject in order
to get donations or suport a Fair idea , in my opinion if this
happends makes the Modd a pay for product during that
periode of time ( 2 weeks)... Thought I understand the idea
I do not bellieve in the road to get that idea materialised in reality !

If it's a Free Mod it should be a free Mod !
Alternatively you could do a diferent version in CD with the
GWX logo and pack the all thing with some extra files and send it
to neal so that this way he could make it a donnator gift ! ( Just a sugestion and idea )

Man I just donnated 2 weeks ago and certanly I'm not swiming in money,

I think the options for everyone here are really quite simple.

If you would like GWX 2.0 a week prior it's full general release, the GWX Team are simply asking you to make a donation to SS whether it be large or small, to assist in it's upkeep.

If you feel unable to for whatever reason, simply wait the extra week for it's release.

Out of interest you might like to know, it was the Kpt. idea to have a period of one week. I had earlier suggested a 2 to 4 week period.

I also accept I run the risk of being accused of being in a priveledged position....I will be making my usual festive donation regardless.

The bottom line is.....Enjoy GWX at whatever point in time you get it :arrgh!:

i really cant see what all the fuss is, when i wanted pacific aces i had to dish out money, i wanted it so i paid. now for convenience, and because im too lazy to fight for a download on day of public release i will pay for gwx 2.0, i hasten to add that i only contributed to site upkeep about 6 weeks ago, but it serves my purpose to get gwx 2.0 early. so ill pay, plus i havent seen a minimum amount donation mentioned anywhere, so again i cant see what the fuss is , because i daresay neal would be happy with a couple of dollars\pounds , & hed be probebly be just as grateful for that ,as he would be if youd donated 10 or 20 dollars\pounds towards upkeep. because when running a site with webspace and download space every penny helps, i know from past experience that getting a good webspace provider isnt cheap.

anyway on 1st day of forum release ill let him have $10.00 dollars i think thats an amount i can easily afford ,plus the wife wont notice it :) .

oh and in the 2 years plus ive been lurking here, i dont think ive ever seen one of the gwx guys post asking for money or to make a profit, the impression ive alway had is that they do this for the sheer joy of doing it, and for the love of the game plus you guys who follow the mod. & this is just theyre way of ensuring that the forum and this comunity continue smoothly on. if you cant afford to donate, then 1 week really isnt an aweful long time to wait. i daresay within 3 days of the forum release there will be a dozen mirrors on filefront anyway ,from other forum members. so fussing over it inst really very logical.

That's exactly right. Until about a year ago, Pacific Aces and games sold through Chips and Bits (with a healthy 12% commission) kept the coffers full. For a while, PA brought in 2x more than the site cost to run. When the donations dropped below the cost of running the site, I paid the balance out of my pocket; was not a problem, Subsim was well in the black for two years. But Chips and Bits died, and Amazon only pays 6.5%, not much, so it's necessary for me to go to the Subsim members to help with the costs.

I do want to say, some of you have made very generous donations in the past, and I don't want to make you feel that you have to make another donation right away. The key is, with 20,000 people viewing this forum a month, that we spread the load. So, if you donated in 2007, please e-mail me the day before the GWX release and include 1. the date of your donation 2. your Paypal e-mail address and 3. your forum nickname.

Make sure the e-mail Subject is: Neal, my Subsim donation goes toward GWX 2.0 please

i cant donate... i have no credit card for paypal :dead:

Does the GWX team accept money order?:hmm:

Tis not for the GWX team
GWX is and will always be a freeware mod

The donations are to Subsim
To help Neal to continue paying to host this great site
Without whom there would be no GWX
Or anything else come to that

:ahoy:
my bad...:damn: :nope: Neal do you accept Money orders?

Sure, especially American Express type. If you plan to send a MO or cash, be sure to e-mail me the day of the release for the download info. I trust you, I'll hook you up right away.

Greetings to all Silent Hunter 3 fans :D

I know my post will look a little bit stupid but please understand that my English is not good as yours eather:oops: .
So i have a little question or let just say a favor to ask.
When the day of PUBLIC release will come, would it be possible to create a torrent file for a download.
Why do i ask
1 - A better and a save way to resive large file or files without bad hach data (sorry for that English)
2 - Less trafic for a official GWX web site (i belive you will upload the package when the time come)

Thanks in advance!
All the best! Dimitrius ;)

Thanks Neal, you have something in your PM...

For dose who are in the gain of twisting my intentions,
I will just say something and stop This talk of danating or not!

I bellieve that most of you are not aware of the real world
that for some people are not as easy as for others!

I am paying my site from my own pocket,
the reazon is dose people the guys that come in here
and the only thing that they can really get free is our Mods !

You can call me a Robin Hood, or a Martir or what ever,
But I bellieve that I am doing something right and good
when I spend hours on graphic work and Modding all by
myself without any help and team to support my decisions
or bad moments !

This way I can offer them some happiness, some cool moments
with a free Mod that Is my gift to all that have a bad life or are in
bad financial status, I decided to post Mods here and to begin Modding
first for the Fun and Joy and then with that idea on my head ,

Each mod I make Is a gift of happiness for someone that under normal
real life conditions have no way of bying or paying for a new game
every weeck or Mounth...

For you guys I work and keep Modding !

I want to clarify something here and now before speculation gets out of hand... and have updated the first post to match. (In orange no less.)

I do agree with the idea..and it's a honor and friendship idea no doubt !

Thought there are some amoung us that allready made a donation
and those will have to donate again ?!:hmm:

If someone allready donated and helped will have to wait like the rest
who didn't , and it looks a bit unfair to me !:hmm:

just mi 2 cents on this subject!

Good point, if you have donated to Subsim within the last year, please e-mail me the day before the GWX release and include 1. the date of your donation 2. your Paypal e-mail address and 3. your forum nickname.

Make sure the e-mail Subject is: Neal, my Subsim donation goes toward GWX 2.0 please

I will look you up in the donation roster and hook you up with the mod ASAP.

thanks
Neal

I too have been on campaign in the Pacific and heard rumor that the GWX Team was ready to release a new upgrade for SHIII. I have reviewed the thread and I must say GWX 2.0 looks outstanding. At least I have time to get in another patrol with my Gato class USS Dorado (SS-248) using the new 1.4 patch! Then I will take a leave of absence from the US Navy and head back to the Atlantic and start a new career as a Kaleun!

This awesome news will make me re-up my "sub"scription a little sooner that planned. So, I too will donate in order to do my part keeping the forum afloat and honor the amazing job accomplished for this mod. My thanks to the GWX Team for all the hard work and effort that went into this mod. Cheers!
