Onkel Neal

The folks at Ubisoft sent Subsim a bunch of Silent Hunter 4 t-shirts to give away. To reward the great work and sense of community exhibited here, we're having a SH4 Mod Celebration Contest.

What is your favorite mod? Which mod do you think adds the most play value to Silent Hunter 4? Nominate your favorite mod and the modmaker in this thread. After a few days, I will post a poll and the top 10 mod makers will win a SH4 t-shirt, designed by Penny Arcade (http://www.penny-arcade.com/). And I will also award a t-shirt at random to some of the players who nominate their favorite modmaker.

So, make a post here, nominate your favorite mod guru, and explain why you feel his work makes Silent Hunter 4 even better!

I have to vote for TM... Ducimus has done an exceedingly good job at revamping SH4. Some of the work has been done on his own, while he has spent a fair bit of effort incorporating other mods (and giving credit where credit is due, to his own credit). Between graphical improvements by the handful, tweaks intending to increase the realism level, CTD fixes, and tweaks meant to bring a bit more difficulty to the game, he has indeed helped bring sub simulation to a higher level with SH4.

I thought Ducimus, then Beery, but both aim at a certain audiance, Leovampire is the winner. His mod can be used in any other, enhences the immersion, makes this the best sim ever graphically spoken.
So

Living breathing ocean, by Leovampire:up:

There are of course numerous indivuduals who stand out and deserve a round of applause, but I have to pick one.

Overall I'd have to say that the TM mod by Ducimus really increased my enjoyment of this sim.

Thank you all so much for all the work you've put into making SH4 that much more enjoyable

Ducimus

I have to pick just one? That's just not right, cause i can't.

The top modding contributions that have made groundbreaking progress in SH4 are really:

- Captain Cox (ill bet you all use a TON of his original work)

- Leovampire (his work on the scene.dat is second to none, and is a giant leap forward for SH4)

- Oakgroove (awesome texture artist and his sub instrument mod is a big leap forward for Sh4)

- Anvart (simply because he got the periscope to work right, and if he hadnt stepped it, this immersion factor would be broken.. probably for about as long as Matresss style radar units in SH3 were broken.. in other words, for years!)

My vote is for one of them. I just can't figure out who. I'll edit my post later when i make up my mind.

As an aside, i dont think anyone should vote for me, at all. All i ever did was round up a bunch of mods, and intergrate them into a modpack. About the only original work ive ever done outside from tweaking a file here or there is

- Bungo pete,
- German Uboat mod
- a map contacts mod.

None of which is hardly groundbreaking in any way, unlike the modders i've already mentioned above. So don't vote for me. I don't deserve it.

EDIT:

As much as i love LeoVampires mod, and his mod IS arguably the greatest single mod made, im going to have to cast my vote for Captain Cox. For proof of his contributions, one need look no further then a sticky post:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=118341

He is the most prolific modder here, has contributed the most mods, all of them good pieces of work.

Time and effert to their mod's for everyone! And to chose between them all is a nightmare in it's self because their are too many to name who have turned this game into something more than it started off as.

How do you chose between guys who first started off with making the game at least half usable until the patches came out and between the guys who made things look nicer inside and out side of our sub's after the game was more functional from the patches.

Oakgrove for the awsome real life interior looks of the subs
Timetravler for mini tweeker
NVDrifter for some serious hex reading then making it compatable for mini tweeker
Krupp for his ship dimention fix's for the ships
Captain Cox with radio programs and buttons and uniforms
Kosh with new sounds and visual adjustments
Darkship with his chrono's
Jan Lynson for his kelp forests
kriller for his work on the docks and trees and more
Redwine for Die Slowly intrducing new explosion graffics
Jimimadrid for his control's work shinny border's and others

Do I have to go on with more examples?

Or how about all the people who initialy did stuff from the begining and then taught and explained to many of us how to read these files and make changes to them in the first place or explained how to compleat a mission when the book didn't explain?

I can't choose between any of them! For me anyone who makes the game we all enjoy better is a winner no matter if you use their MOD or not.

Pat yourself on the back guys your all winners in my eyes!!!

I thought of the wonderful work by all and then looked at the list of mods, the basis of what has been done individually, and I must vote for Captain Cox. Each individual mod of his is a building block for us. My #2 is, of course, Ducimus. I don't think either of them sleep. It takes me days just to understand and implement their brilliant work.

I agree with all of the above. Every one of these guys has done amazing things to bring realism, immersion and playability to SH4, without which, we would have all shelved this sim by now and gone back to SH3, which is by no means a BAD thing..

However, the modder maximus that takes my vote has to be Captain Cox. This man goes out of his way to help anyone who needs it, to the very best of his ability, has helped countless others with their mods, and has contributed greatly by himself.

My choices:

Beery's RFBfor its breadth and dedication to realism, Leo's Living Breathing Ocean for its sheer ingenuity, and well on its way to third Werner's Real Sinking Physics. (I'd give the last a solid recommendation, but it's still being 'tweaked').

Capt'n Cox is in a category of his own

To be honest i think the ammount of time and effort that ALL of the modders and tweakers of SH4 have put into this game deserves recognition, to try and choose any one mod and creator would imho be wrong as all the work is outstanding...

I'm just glad we have such a great bunch of guys dedicated in trying to make this game better in every way.

Ducimus for TM 1.4. But as TM is a community mod, I'd have to give a 'one off' vote to Leovampire for the living breathing ocean mod. This truly outstanding mod has added an unprecedented level of game immersion in my view. :D

Hmm, my favorite mod guru? Tought one, especially when here is a bunch of people who have done such a fantastic job improving the SH4 ultimate experience

But I too would like to put my vote on Captain Cox. Just look at his mods! CBS news and the number of those smaller mods. Not to mention the fact that he does a fine job updating his mods

My vote would be IMHO.....

For Mod assembly & integration creativity...
Ducimus for TM 1.4.

For single mod...Leovampire for the living breathing ocean mod.

For contribution to the SH4 community in terms of # of outstanding mods....Captain Cox.

All in all every mod maker deserves a serious thank you from the community and UBI soft for assisting their product to gain popularity & quality.

I'd like to give my humble vote to Beery for the Real Fleet Boat mod he's done for SHIV and in a way also for all he did for us for SHIII too.

During my time here at Subsim he's done so much for this community, overcame several ups and downs but returned to us with new mods every time.

Got to love that good spirit. Thanks skip!

My first vote go to TM. Since the begining of my play in SH4, it is the mod who match my view of the sim.

But since Ducimus doesn't want the reward, i vote for Leovampire and his brillant "Living Ocean" . Trully fantastic and it is Ver.1 !!

CaptainCox for his tremendous additions for the game.

In fact, you should give a T.Shirt for all modders here. All desearve our thanks.

Rockin Robbins
07-30-07, 09:23 AM
First, I have to recommend awarding three of the t-shirts to WernerSobe, Redwine and leovampire. A nasty confrontation between the Die Slowly and Realistic Sinking Physics mod looked possible....likely.....imminent even. Modders tend to be highly opinionated people, and with the exception of CaptainCox, a bit *****ly (being censored here for a completely innocuous word. OK let's try mispelling it: "prikly") sometimes. Welcome to the world of creative people! But as evidenced by posts #57, 58 and 59 in the [REL] Realistic Sinking Physics thread, these creative, highly opinionated, fiercely competitive guys will bury the hatchet at the drop of a hat if they can work together to make a better Silent Hunter IV. And they're not killing off one of the mods to combine into one. It's coopetition time, where exchange of information makes BOTH mods amazing. I say t-shirts all around to leovampire, Redwine and WernerSobe for that!

Second, but not last by any means, CaptainCox is just hovering above the crowd with his open, immediately responsive and incredibly prolific mod writing. When someone suggests a good tweak, CaptainCox often comes out the next morning with an update, always giving full credit to the suggester. When a modder hits the wall and needs help CaptainCox is there to help, sometimes not taking any credit for his work. I've bugged him to death at times about things that he knew were outmoded (he knew Oakgroove's interior was about to wipe out any improvements I was fishing for) and he never seemed irritated:lol:. So for productivity above and beyond the call of duty (above and beyond reason itself!), he deserves a t-shirt.

Finally, and totally irrelevent to the purpose of this thread, I suggest that we give greater emphasis and recognition to training. WernerSobe's video on sonar only attack setup and execution, and two videos on full manual techniques are just as important as any mod ever produced in achieving full enjoyment of SH4. I consider them a mod to my brain and their effect is amazing. I'm sure there is much more material out there that I am not aware of.

Captain Cox's graphical mods add so much more polish to the gane. I love the Silent Service loading screens, as well as the improved hats. Small things, I know, but to me they really give the game a much more finished feeling. He gets my nomination!

Hmmm tricky to choose one, so I won't I'll pick a top 10:

Captain Cox: All his mods are good quality.
Ducimus: TM.
Oakgroove: Great Dials.
Tater: campaign layers and just plain enthusiasm.
Beery: for RFB.
Anvart: for general troubleshooting and in depth stuff..
Kosh: stealth sub - sounds are important too
Redwine: for die slowely
Wernersobe: for realistic sinkings
mcoca: for his automated campaign editing tool...

I should add that graphics type mods add to the immersion but we shouldn't forget beery and tater who spend most their time trawling through masses of data fixing things, editing things, bringing things together...

this reflects my thoughts as well but i say ducimus should still be concidered because assmbly and testing his mod was as much work as most of the mods he included.

i would like to add a little known name that i think will soon be THE name we think of for modding sh4, Skywasjer, he has created a tool that is about to be released next week that revolutionalizes how we can mod sh4. no more mini tweaker or tweak files needed ever. have a look at this post to see what i am refering to:

Great! Now we have to cut those t-shirts into a couple dozen itty bitty pieces!

IMHO all the modders that support this game deserve a standing ovation:up: . Sh4 has turned into much more than what vanilla was because of the hard work of all these guys have put into it. Sometimes we forget that while we are enjoying the fruits of their labor, they most likely are working on something new, not enjoying the game w/ their spare time. BIG CUDOS TO ALL YOU MODDERS.

Now my vote:
MODDER: CAPTIAN COX Every time I log onto theses forums I look to see if there is anything new from him. I never leave port w/o his mods.
INDIVIDUAL MOD: LIVING BREATHIN OCEAN by LEOVAMPIRE Words cant describe what this mod does for the immersion factor of the game.
UTILITY: JONESOFT'S GENERIC MOD ENABLER Without this great utility, alot of us might not even be able to run all these mods without messing up our installation of the game.

WOW!!! I mean damn "Pick Just One?" I don't use just one mod so it would be stupid for me to try to pick "just one". :rotfl:

Well I have given this a lot of thought and here is that thought. :know:

There is a ONE that has made this game better by ALL accounts. Most every modder here has recommended his "mod" to the community. I am referring to the creator of JSGME, JScones I think it is. How would/could we put all of these wonderful mods into the game without JSGME.

I would have to say my opinion is a bit biased as I have not tried the larger mods like TM or RFB. I'm ok with vanilla version at the moment. With that said, I do have some texture mods and OAKGROOVES texture mod has really brought this together from me. Simply outstanding work!

It would be hard for me to vote for one of the "Super MODS" only because the work of several MODS make up the great work as a whole.

leovampire for the Living Breathing Ocean MOD.

So that anyone can win in the first place here is mine.

CaptainCox: for dedication to excelence and most willing to accomidate anyone's
request for new variations to his mod's and or add on's to them. And for willingness
to help anyone with their MOD problems that he is really good at.

Ducimus: for combining mod's and and making them all work together and
then making a whole new way to play the game's missions and
not giving in to people's complaints and problems but instead
working with it to make it better for all. And stop being so modest.
Berry was also in the running for this with me due to his dedication
to realizm and research for that because he took the SIMULATOR name
to heart for the dedicated die hard sim people out there.

JScones: For the creation of a utility that almost everyone uses and or
should use to preserve the original game files and lets us safly
test our MOD's without having to accuire new files to replace
what we screwed up big time! JSGME is the program of course

Darkship: Granted patch 1.3 made his stop watches all usless but do any of us have pictures posted that don't show his stop watches in one way or another before patch 1.3? I may be biased because he did make a special watch for me and when he saw in a pic I posted it didn't look right he revised it and sent me a new one that looked better and did his best to help me make the needles sit perfectly in the watch. I also want Jimimadrid because I use his Shinny Boarders controls and of course we all use green lamps.

God I am sorry to all the great MODER's out there but we have to pick just 4 and I don't know what to do without hurting someone else's feelings!? And I don't want people to stop doing the great work they have done and might be working on now that we don't know about.

Mcoca's automated campaign editor. I have a feeling you haven't even begun to see what this tool will do.

Timetraveller's minitweaker. Again, where would anyone be without it.

Nvdrifter and all the others who made tweak files. My head spins thinking about it.

It hasn't produced any mods yet, but I have my eye on skwasjer's S3D as being the best thing since sliced bread.

As for mod "product?" Way too hard to pick one. Captain Cox, Leovampire, Oakgroove, Beery, Ducimus, LukeFF, Kosh, Werner Sobe, Redwine, Jace11---too many to pick that really know their stuff.

<edit> I bolded the 10 that are most prolific authors, or did the biggest mods or tools. Honestly the last few could be interchangable with several people (listed above or not).

Yes, I know one can manually install, but would you really want to do that? My one vote goes to JSGME. :arrgh!:
My vote for the T-Shirt that goes to a non-modding person goes to you my friend for this great answer.

This isn't fair! Can't pick one, I pick "all of the above". They can make more T-shirts.

I wonder...would this conflict with the Brawny Sailor Big B.O. Stained t-shirt mod...v1.0?

Yes. The texture of the sweat would be an issue. Ducimus is working on a fix for this....involving Captain Cox' deodorant mod!

You guys kill me! OK - I am going to through out a couple of other names that I haven't seen:

Timetraveller and Nvdrifter.

Without the sh3/4 mini tweaker and the tweakfiles that have been created, many of us smaller modders wouldnt be able to do any modding at all. My understanding of things is limited - but thanks to these 2 - I can mod a number of things that wouldn't be otherwise accessible. These two folks really opened the door for some of us to change things, and in so doing, have really contributed alot to the success of other mods.

Things like RFB or TM that change the time your gun loads - even simple changes like that were made easy by these two guys. They deserve to be recognized.

Note - alot of other fine modders already listed - and I can't give you all a t-shirt - but I can say thanks again!

In the short run - There you have it! Few if any can narrow it down to one. With the two Super mods set aside. I do not think anyone just uses 1 mod. I can appreciate your desire to bestow some measure of recognition on someone for a "Job Well Done".

However, My feeling is that all the Modders are Artist and Craftsmen, their craft or art is way beyond my comprehension.
Some of the mods are obviously labors of love and some are done by folks, just because they know how. Still I can't see trying to make all these mods just for the Hal-i-but. So there must be some love there as well.

And what about you, Neal? I figure you got your shirts, but what about the recognition for a "Job Well Done". You deserve a big note of recognition. Where would we be without you? It must be a major pain in the task to keep this site up to the quality most take for granted, but have come to expect. Thank You.

I can not preceive the Modders as potato chips "Bet You Can't Pick Just One." No modder on this forum has denied me help when I screwed up their mod or couldn't get it to work right. Sometimes when I look at a mod, I feel like I did when I went to my first really good art museum. I am in awe because I am in the presence of masters. My thought "How The Hell Did They Do That?"

I am certain everyone here appreciates what you are trying to do. But unless you got alot of shirts man, I really do not see how "Just One" could be placed above the rest.

I have already stated my vote, but I wanted everyone to know that in my eyes there are No second best here, Only number 1s across the board. Do with this post as you wish. I have had my say.

PS Thanks for moving the make a donation button, please read my post in the make a donation thread and PM me an alternative. Thank You.

I think Ducimus and Beery each deserve a shirt for their all-in-one mod packs. Even if not all the content was their own, it takes a good amount of work to put them all together and testing the compatibility.

Anyway, for individual mods I'll nominate OakGroove. Pretty interiors!

Well I think all the modders that put in all those long hard hours giving up their time freely to make the game better for those of us who don't even know how to start, should win!

But of course it can't be like that :(

That said, I've got to vote for LeoVampire's LBO mod. On the surface, it's "simple" in that it doesn't change or "improve" the gameplay in any way shape or form.

But it is unbelievably complex in the amount of work it took to do that (I'm sure) and as far as suspension of disbelief, well the 1st time I ran it I was tripping over my jaw as it dragged the floor  Looking at those gorgeous waves, for the 1st time I feel like I'm really standing on the bridge of a Balao class boat and not sitting behind a keyboard.

I was a TC junkie before LBO, now it hurts to leave the bridge and go to TC.

Leo and LBO gets my vote

First, my thanks and respect to all the talented modders that have made the game so much fun to game with. A very tough request to make a choice from such a truely fine bunch of people who are the top of the line gamers and community members.

My vote goes to Ducimus for Trigger Maru...:yep:

Only 10 T shirts are up for grabs!!!

Give 'em to the modders that have constantly contributed towards the massive improvements and realism to make it all that more enjoyable for the subbie community as a whole. Don't forget the Geniuses that created mod installers, tweak programs and any other program to help make things easier for us.

Ooops, there are only 10 so I won't give my preferences as all these guys deserve one. :yep:

Does my choice earn a Tshirt as well

I vote for more t-shirts to give out to more deserving modders in the community :)

Looks like just about anyone who I would nominate has already been nominated! But I guess I do have to nominate a modder or two though.

1) Ducimus + all of the modders who contributed to TM ubermod.
2) Capt'n Cox for importing the imperial bearing mod to SH4. THE ONLY MOD THAT I COULD NOT PLAY WITHOUT! (oh yea and for all of his other quality mods :) ).

Edit: for those of us who are unlikely to win... is there anywhere where we can actually buy one of those sweet t-shirts?

AHhh, The old KISS ploy (Keep It Simple Stupid) request from Neal "don't complicate". I can live with that. It just so happens at the moment I am using mods, tweaks or tools from ten people. So in No paticular order.

10 it is Sir, as requested. Disclaimer: My list in NO way lessens my respect for Anyone who creates a mod, skin or tool that makes this game better. You are all A#1s in my book. I do not consider this list as voting twice. As usual I didn't understand the rules.

Simple, give ALL modders a shirt, then give them part of the royalties, because without them this game would have been DOA.

I have ( willingly) to go for Captain Cox, with Tedhealy coming a very close second. The Capn's work has been ground-breaking and universal.

P.S. Onkle Neal - Please don't select me for a tee-shirt - It's one of the ugliest things i've seen in a long time. Wear it? NEVER!

It is hard to pick just a handful out of all the hard working folks on this site. It almost seems counter productive. Anywho heres my two cents..

Ducimus-For all of his insight, tweaking, endless testing, tweaking, endless testing, tweaking, . . . . you get the idea, and then putting it all together for all of us to enjoy with a simple click of the JSGME button.

Captain Cox-For the sheer volume & quality of his work. He has even revolutionized the way mods are presented. It's a joy to open one of his threads the way everything is layed out so professionally.

Anvart-For all of his "Master Hex Work" Many times he has fixed things the devs would'nt or could'nt. Remember the triangle headed guy in SHIII? Now the Scopes & Hydrophones among others.

Oak_Groove-Where would any of us be without his wonderful & highly detailed interiors for SHIII & SHIV.

JScones-For his great software of course.

Too many others to name. They all deserve a shirt and a round of applause in my book.

I use mods from all these people. We have to cut at least two t-shirts in half. Or we can make the list even wider and just send the t-shirts in circles like the Saturn commercials. Include Neal Stevens because Subsim itself is the best mod of all!

So many people but i'll narrow it down to the mods I use.

Captain Cox - CBS Radio Mod

Ducimus - T-Maru (Although credit should be given to others as well)

Jscones - Generic mod enabler is a MUST have! (Plus he's an Aussie)

Anvart - He works miracles.

Leovampire - Added much needed immersion with his work.

Beery - While I'm not an RFB user, he deserves mention for work on both RFB and RUB

Sorry if I didn't list others. I've used a lot of Time Travelers stuff in SH3. Plus others work.

I think all modders deserve a thankyou, glad I don't have to choose a winner.
