View Full Version : Loch Ewe in '42 - piece of cake

After reading a thread about some kaluens preferring deep water to harbors in GWX, I decided to attempt a raid into Loch Ewe during an early December morning with a light fog in a IXB .

Getting close to harbor entrance, I was relieved to only find a couple armed trawlers and a torpedo boat. I managed to evade all three until a third armed trawler appeared at the entrance. I tried evasive maneuvers, but the trawler detected my presence and began pinging me. I braced for a DC attack, but the trawler just ran circles around me, pinging incessantly. Then an aircraft showed up, made a bombing run and looked like it had me nailed, but dropped its load well away - perhaps trying to avoid the trawler.

Once inside Loch Ewe it was pretty much a piece of cake with lots of parked ships. The only damage was to the flak gun when my conning tower appeared when I was too shallow. The trawlers just hung around, guarding whatever ship was close by. After sinking 4 ships my torps were exhausted. I may head out to the closest milk cow to get a fresh load of fish and go back to clean up! :arrgh!: :yep:

This tanker won't be heading out anytime soon.

Two armed trawlers that tailed me all the way in.

Bogue aircraft carrier ... there was an anti-torpedo net along its starboard side.

Torpedo boat doing 360s while I raided the harbor. Defenses were light.

I suggest harbors to have more defenses after the sinkin of the Royal Oak by Prien, so harbor raidin will be more harder to get in and out. Just my opinion.

Sorry, but how did you get past the gun-bunkers?? I tried in a Type VII (same security - three trawlers and two torpedo boats) and the moment I showed my scope I was shelled (seems the last trawler has underwater x-ray vision) and it took me a while to locate the source - all along the embankment were bun batteries in bunkers (basic patched vanilla, no mods)

I think the difficulty settings play a major role here, i think the difficulty is to low in her game, hell even in nightime its difficult to raid lock ewe in 100%.

:hmm:

Well that will have to change in 1.04

:rotfl:

Shouldnt be a cakewalk but its all part of the fun to try and get in without being really impossible

Not just your opinion. Prien's raid on Scapa Flow was the only successful harbor raid on a British naval base, period. It was never done again.

Bugger!not had the nerve to do a proper RN harbour raid and now it looks like I won't get the chance when GWX1.04 comes along:damn: I better give it a go while I still can;)

Yeah but then Prien couldnt reload a save if he got it wrong

How did you find out all the harbours have been deleted for v1.04 ? :o :hmm:

1.03 is harder than 1.0

That tanker and the armed trawlers looks almost the same as when I visited the harbour in 1940. :rotfl:

Presently roaming round Scapa having fun in a type 7, Dec 39 running GWX.:D
Did this before and it was a doddle getting in but no targets.
This time though driven into a subnet, been hounded twice now by 3 destroyers that seem to know exactly where I am and are doing an overlapping circle wherever I go, I have minor damage to my flack mounting which is amazing the pounding I've been getting.
Currently trying desperately to throw them off after putting 2 fish into a revenge class, she's listing heavily and about to go down (I hope!) and a destroyer with my stern shot. :yep:
I'm trying desperately to reload but have to keep going silent to avoid the destroyers. I tried parking it on the bottom next to the sunken DD which still has upperworks showing but it doesn't work so I'm going for open water. Its daylight now, I've got about 40% on battery and the Co2 meters rising. I daren't surface even if I get away from the DD's in daylight so I'm going to be sweating some if I can hold on for darkness, thats if I live long enough.
I want to reload go beyond the listing BB towards the docks, there's a troopship waiting for me next to another moored DD.
NO save games reloaded although plenty if required.......... I would be banjaxed by now without external view and direction indicator though at 70 odd % realism.
BTW I've only ever fired a salvo of 4 torps before on 2 occasions, both times 2 go bang about half way to the target, I was set at 6 meters firing at the Revenge this time in Scapa so maybe I could have hit bottom but doubt it. Previously was against a Dido in open water though, again 2 went off en route, the Dido lit the afterburner and ran ahead of the other 2 after the explosions. I was in late 39 both times and was running impact triggers.......... baffled:damn: .

All this talk about 1.0, 1.3, 1.4; the easiest raiding is in the stock game. Of course there aren't any ships there, but hey, you can't please everybody.

Still in Scapa......... and alive!:D
One of 3 DD's left steaming back out to its station wherever that was, the other 2 kept coming albeit without any depth chages, one had blown its own racks off, the other hadn't but I'm presuming it ran out of ammo if thats possible?..
I got clipped by one on a pass and it curved away straight up the beach, to get a shot on the troopship I had to get harbour side as the open sea side, its port side, was protected by nets.
The remaining DD followed and by some deft maneouvring he managed to end up backed into the harbour wall which he proceeded to go astern along until he hit the dock behind stern on  thats where he remained.
I put 2 fish into the transport, then a third for good measure before she sank.
Dilemma time, 2 inboard fish left - one forward, one aft. A DD straight in front of me moored just round the corner a large tanker - an easy shot once in position, a meduim tanker - not so easy or 2 small freighters?. Mmmm...... then again there's a BB listing 3000 yards away and its on my way out. I put 2 holes on the port side, perhaps 2 more this time on the starboard?........ decisions decisions...........
No contest personally, had to be the BB...........:yep:
Put 2 more fish into her before heading out into the open water, I've got 2 reloads outside but its 0900 ish, 35% on battery with a quarter of the Co2 meter used up.
The weathers iffy so visibility isnt great but I've had 2 Ansons fly over a couple of times so parking in the middle, reloading and recharging isn't impossible although better in the dark. Seriously doubt I can stay surfaced long in daylight, I'm going to see if the BB sinks, had to save - work in the morning - and then decide.
If she stays afloat  I'll probably throw caution to the wind and go for a recharge of batteries and air, submerge and wait for dark to reload and let her have the lot  , hopefully after 6 torps and holes either side she will finally sink:smug: .
Whatever happens after that I've got to get past the 3 DD'S in the outer harbour/approaches and get to my patrol area or lose renown going back early so to speak.
Did I mention I stopped here on the way to the North Atlantic? .
