View Full Version : [REL] Love post-process filters but tired of that grainy effect?

I sometimes used to turn post-rocessing off because i got so fed up with that annoying grainy effect! Everything else in post-process filters looks brilliant with colors being more vivid, etc.

So after messing around the data folder a bit, i'm releasing this little mod :D
Tired of it? well, get rid of it :arrgh!:!

This mod simply allow you to leave every post-processing filters running while turning the grainy effect off. After all we're playing a game, not watching an ol' movie...:smug:

Use JSGME.

I have to go out for a few hours, but ill defiantly load this up when i get back. I love PPF, but HATE the grainy effect. i honestly didnt think it was so easily modded. Learn something new every day :88)

Damn lol... :-?
Looks like i've been maybe reinventing the wheel :damn: didn't came across this one
I'm not sure, I have not tested it... Don't want to create an account etc. in order to download it :ping:

At least, mine do the job ;)

did you find any increase in FPS by losing the grains?

Sweet!

I'll give it a shot. Thanks.

I'd turned off PPF for the same reason, UGLY STATIC! like watching ant races on late night NO channel TV.

Using this it's never looked better, dark is REAL DARK! and the colors are brilliant :up:

Excellent :)

thanks to you guys for the feedbacks :up:

Glad to know you apreciate it. Yes, keeping PPF without grain effect has never made SH4 look that good, PPF really makes it way better, especially underwater.

As for the FPS, no gain. Actually i tricked the game to render a "transparent" noise, so the filter, in effect, is not really turned off...

How about editing X:\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter 4 Wolves of the Pacific\Data\Filters\Templates\Noise.fxclass instead? Wouldn't it be easier? :roll:

So is there any point in getting this mod if you don't use post-processing filter?

kapitan_zur_see
05-13-07, 07:15 AM
MaxT, editing shaders directly are way more complicated.
To fredbass, There's no point in getting that mod if you want to turn post-process filters off in-game, that does already get rid of the grainy effect (but also all others...)
this mod is to turn specifically off the old movie like grainy effect while keeping all the others PPF on (colors rendition, contrast, etc.). Give it a try, PPF doesn't only implies grain effect.

It looks so much better without that "noise" texture. 200% improvement if you ask me, more crisp and deep colors.

BRAVO!!!

Man, what a difference :know:

Indeed ;)

I'm currently working on the bubbles wich are released by your sub when underwater, they're too big i think! I'd rather like a trail of much more bubbles but far smaller. But so far, no succes...

Anyway, many thanks to you guys for your comments, it's really encouraging :up:

The last three pics I uploaded to my XFire profile (http://www.xfire.com/screenshots/xanderf/) are all in-game shots on a Balao with this mod in place.

Click on the picture to get it to display in the frame, then you can click on the frame to get a larger view in a popup, and click on that once to get a full-size (1280x1024) view.

Funny they didn't made an option to turn off grain effect only... it looks so useless lol

Is there talk of making this a separate graphics option in a new patch? I would agree wit hthe majority here that it's not my favorite option, but the PPE really imporve the contrasts. Without it, the game just looks like the brightness is cranked up really high.

If we could turn off the noise so that we aren't using processing power for it, that would be fabulous!

I would not say it is useless as I like the PPF grainy BUT, I like what you did BETTER:up::up::up::up: The graphics are so much richer. I do not know why the developers decided to hide what the graphics could be behind the grainy look. I guess to create a feel to the game to which it does. But what you got going here is awesome. The whole picture has changed for the better.

Awhile ago I edited the shader to remove the grainy effect. For anyone interested in how its done, edit Data\Shaders\Filters\CompoundFilterPS.fx and replace

// noise
float4 noise=tex2D(customTex0,In.Tex0*float2(NoiseTileX,N oiseTileY)+rand.xy)-0.5;
C=C+noise*NoiseIntensity;

with

// noise
// float4 noise=tex2D(customTex0,In.Tex0*float2(NoiseTileX,N oiseTileY)+rand.xy)-0.5;
// C=C+noise*NoiseIntensity;

Exactly what I've said earlier (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=532453&postcount=10). Why bother with the texture changes :roll: Oh well, as long as we get the same result :|\\

Hmmm....that would actually mean we could just REDUCE the intensity of it rather than eliminate it entirely? That might not be a bad idea, it's not a TERRIBLE effect, although it is rather overdone. 'Course, I like it completely missing, too. Hmmm....

Yes, this editing of the shader file is the better way, because the noise.dds texture could be used possibly also as input parameter for other shader effects and a change of the texture, changed then also the output of these effects.

I have momentarily no SHIV installed but however I believe the noise.dds texture is also used as input param for the clouds shader.:hmm:

In the shaders file. I am not shure because I do not use that effect in game.

I have used this mod and ROW with post processing on and not noticed any problems. I don't use post processing any more, but it was OK when I did. Best thing I can suggest is to try it and see what happens. If you use JSGME you can always yank it if it doesn't work correctly.

I think, more interesting use external universal PE programs... e.g. SweetFX.
