View Full Version : No offence intended, but can a death scene be modded?

Hi.

I hope I don't cause any offence here, but as much as we all seem to play these games, with a suspension of belief and immersion, one area that it doesn't really hook you in is in the fear of 'dying'

In another game I like (Ghost Recon Adv Warfighter) when you get shot, you hear yourself groan, and fall to the ground and see what you would probably see, before the world goes all black.

Last night I was playing and got totally creamed by a destroyer, and lost depth control / flooding.

Whilst my ship sank and damage reports were coming in, of course the inside of the ship didn't fill up with water or have crew screaming or looking terrified, but just as the ship should have imploded, the view swapped to the outside (still not imploding) and then panned up to the surface.

Is it possible / wanted, for you to actually see water flooding in , hear the screams etc.., or a brief flash of the ship imploding, before going all dark and silent for a few secs, before ending the career...

In a way, to me, it would serve as a reminder and a reinforcement of the respect we should have for all submariners, and the danger they face...

Just my $0.02... again I don't want to upset anyone.

I agree, as long as it is done tastefully. I've mentioned in other threads how some appropriate music playing as the sub reaches crush depth would be a nice touch.

I did have one idea for this, but I'm not too sure if it would work.

Does anyone know if the 'end game' screen format could be replaced and display a GIF file instead of the background image? (presumably a Targa or BMP at the moment). If this were possible, I imagine the 'death' screen could be replaced with a GIF file, which, as I'm sure you know, can support animation, so it would be possible to have an 'image' file with an animation on it - say a sub going down or whatever.

How I came up with this idea was by thinking that the F1 command shortcuts page could be replaced with another screen, to effectively allow you to portray another section of the submarine, even if it was only a 2D animated GIF. Losing the shortcuts screen in game wouldn't make a great deal of difference once you actually knew the shortcuts.

I'm going to see if this will work, I'm guessing not, but worth a shot...

Even just the interior going dark, followed by crush noises, would be better.

Hey, that's a great idea. I think that would be far better ... more fitting yet still tasteful.

The part that ugs me about the current setup is when the helmsman keeps shouting out the depth as it goes to the external camera. A couple of times, he keeps yelling it when I'm surfacing as I die, so the camera pans up to the sky and he announces we've surfaced just as the screen pops up saying we all died.

Yeah that bugs me too.

Good idea, maybe it can be modded in?

I'de figure just taking out the switch to external cam, and replacing the music trigger with crush noises, as well as freezeing the sub at it's current depth would be all that's needed.
