:arrgh!: I got Medal of Honor yesturday after sinking 24 merchants, 2 destroyers and a battleship. I am using TMO with Training wheels for SH4 1.4. After I ran out of ammo I started ramming fishing boats and sampan. It was fun.

Hi everyone,
first of all, thanks for this wonderful site and community, it helps beginners alot to understand the basics of SH and gain more knowledge about this game...
I'm totally new to SH and basically to any submarine simulating game, so the first thing i did was reading the manual... I noticed the manual had some flaws and then began to play the tutorial section of the game itself and reading some useful guides on this forum... I passed the first 3 training missions, but got stuck with the convoy attack, so here is my first question:
1. When the game starts, i am able to estimate the course of the convoy and manage to get closer, in fact, within range...
However, there are 3 destroyers and somehow, they always manage to know where i am... I am always at periscope dept, advancing 1/3 ahead... I know on the navigation map there's a double radius for each destroyer, but i don't know how to avoid it.... They simply use a sweeping pattern and as i am going very slow (1/3 ahead as mentioned) it is impossible to avoid them...
So my first question: how to get in an excellent firing position and passing the 'guarding' destroyers unnoticed untill you can fire at the merchant ships itself?
So the mission goes on... The destroyers spot me, they close in fast... I dive to 40m and try to shake them (changing course regularely, ...)... However, i never manage to shake them... I am able to outmanouver them a bit so the dept charges don't do any harm but that's it... They always stay close to me... so here is question 2:
2. How to escape destroyers? Dive deep and go on flank speed and change course regularely doesn't help for me... What do i do wrong then?
Hopefully i can at least manage a succesful attack on an armed convoy after the answers...
To end, i have 2 other questions:
3. Does the sonar work as good when you are 40m deep as if when you are at periscope dept?
4. When you launch a career, you have a crew... I noticed most of the crew has got a skill with a speciality... Can someone tell me how he decides which compartment gets which crew members? (according to specialities, ranks, efficiency, leadership, ...)
For example: Does the officer in a torpedo room also need some leadership to guide the others of his team?
And how to 'collect' a good damage control team? It rarely seems to have any effect...
Kind regards,
Vansteken
PS: I'm sorry if i've made some spelling mistakes, english is not my native tongue...

It looks like I made a real rookie mistake. After downloading SH-4 I noticed it crashed on tutorial startup, so I rechecked my system requirements.

128 MB video card...things have gone terribly wrong. Can anyone steer me in the direction of a moderately priced replacement for my terribly out of date 64MB Dell D-2400 video card. Is it an easy, out of the box install like memory or is it a trip into the shop? -Thanks in advance

Not even sure a Dell will accept just any card, sorry.
You can try going deep and coming up inside the convoy. Think it's better to aproach from about 45deg angle-on-bow either side and launch before being detected though. Fire at range and be well clear of the area before they realise you're around.
2. How to escape destroyers? Dive deep and go on flank speed and change course regularely doesn't help for me... What do i do wrong then?
Go deep and quiet. 40m is not deep, it's quite shallow in fact. Use flank speed to get out of the way of cans, stay silent otherwise.
3. Does the sonar work as good when you are 40m deep as if when you are at periscope dept?
Technically it should work better, though I doubt it makes a difference in the game.
Can't quite recall tbh. I'm sure the search function can turn up several threads that clarify this.
I'd like to know if it's possible to customize the settings in the campaigns (ie: ext view, events...). It seems the choice is restricted to pre-defined settings (easy, normal, hard, realist).
Is there a file to modify?
When you are In Port (in the office), click on the radio on the bookshelf (to the left) and adjust options as you want.

ahoy mate's I am trying to figure out a modding issue:
My SH4 Gold is installed on a Toshiba laptop, it has the right spex, and plays the stock game well. It is a 64 bit system running Windows 7.
I don't seem to have any problem whatsoever installing JSGME, and everything seems to work for the mods until I start the game...then it acts as if they were never there.
The mods I have tried are the GFO mod, and the Blackwolf+Titan Superfortress mods...Now in the past, on a different PC I could turn on the mod with JSGME, and go on the game to quick mission or war patrol, and select one of the boats for my selected mission, but they are never there!
I apreciate the help, I'm still playing my careers, it's just i like the occasional mayhem when I take the camera perspective from a jap ship which has the Titan's full broadside comming to bear at them...bright flash!...rain of pain baby!

Sometimes a picture is just a picture. You can, however, edit it for a customized desktop (That's your narrator and the Mrs. in a retro 40's shot) The same can be done to the pinup picture in the Sonar Room. There are a couple of threads and downloads on this subject.

AHHH! thanks for the info. All this time I thought that my SHIV was bugged.
Admittedly my old system is approaching abacus status (Vista Home Premium SP2, Athlon 64 2.4gig dual core, 2gig RAM, HD5670, X-Fi Fatal1ty) but normally SH4 runs flawlessly on it (doesn't even seem to make any difference if I run GameBooster prior to starting the sim or not). But about 20% of the time I get slide show frame rates in the sim (menus are normal); I can exit and restart to no effect; I can restart Vista with no improvement. A few hours, a day, two days later I start SH4 again and it runs fine. Task Manager shows nothing unusual, and other resource intensive games aren't affected.
So, what am I overlooking?

:damn: Can anyone tell me, does SH4 Wolves of the Pacific, right out of box, have a way to place a compass rose on the navigation map? I've noticed on some of youtube tutorials, they have one on screen to help navigation.
I'm brand new to computer games and SH4, and I'm struggling to figure out how to plot course and/or find bearings of enemy ships when reported.
Would like to get comfortable on using sonar and map and avoid sticking scope up only to get shot at! I'd like to be able to keep my crew alive thru one game. Many thanks!!!

First of all we have to know what game you are playing.
There is silent Hunter 4 V1.0 This must be patched to V1.4
You can do this at the UBI web site.
There is also Silent Hunter 4 Gold edition. This is patched to V1.5 and addes U Boats to the game.
You can tell what version you have by looking in the lower right corner of the load screen.
Somewhere there is a bearing tool mod, I'll see if I can find it.
I found it but need to know what screen resolution you are running.

Hello everyone, I have some questions...
First, torpedo colors: at every video i see the torpedoes are black with yellow nose ... are those mk 14?? because mines are grey with blue nose..
also, there are more torpedoes than mk 10 and 14? if i play a mission in 1941 with a porpoise, im equipped with mk 14, if i play a mission in 1945 with a balao i still got the mk 14... (1.4 version, no mods).:06:
2nd, I started my first campaign in 1941 with an S class, the missions took from a couple of days to about a couple of weeks the largest, when i retourned back to base the next missions started the next day or the next week, Everything was Ok. Later I created another campaign in 1941, but now with a Salmon class. This time i got one mission per month!! I finished a patrol in december 28, for example, and the next mission date was at January 24!!, I dont know why this happens... i'm missing battles like the coral sea and midway...
There is some way to change the missions rate to starting date next day after arriving at port?
Thanks and Good Hunting! :)

Try this thread for a bearing/range tool:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=174874
You can also use the plotting tools on the chart (click on the closed compass). However, those use true bearings. The mod from the link above has center follow your sub, and the 0 degrees correspond to the heading of the sub.

Hi, I'm new to the forum and just wanted to say thanks to everyone who has spent so much time developing it and the many mods that seem to be available.
Hello all.
After many years of collecting dust, I really felt for hitting the sea once again. Though, I´ve came across a problem that is well known on the I-net but none of the sollutions help me. I could of course not have found the right one...
Anywho;
- I installed SH4 on my freshly installed Windows 7 64-bit (from what I know, SH4 is compatible with Win 7).
- I ran it to see that it worked and it ran fine. Just went into the first menu in the game and then left.
- Then I installed Wolves of the pacific wich patches it to 1.5.
- From this point, I can no longer start the game. It says; "Cannot start the program since Intro.dll is missing on your computor..."
- After some googeling I first made sure that I had DirectX9 but mine was newer so it wouldn´t update this.
- After some more googeling I found a intro.dll file wich I put in "windows/system32". Still no improvement.
- Finally I tested to run some kind of SH4.intro.dll-program wich didn´t do sh*t, might as well be spyware from what I know...
So, now I´m out of ideas. Isn´t this compatibel on Win 7 64 bit? Should I put the intro.dll file somewhere else???
I´m sure the answer is easy or right under my nose but I have truly searched for an answer without luck...
Thanks in advance.

- Don't instal to program files
- Run it as admininistrator
Try the latter first, that should get around the issue of installing in program files. Otherwise try a reinstall to a different location.
Thanks Fireeftr, at least that can rule out any problem to X64.
Ok Arclight, I´ll reinstall in a new folder, thanks! Run as admin I dont think matter to me since I´ve turned off UAC, but perhaps that isn´t related (?). I´ll try that second hand...
I´ll report back
Got it wokring, thanks!!!

Goody, good practice in general for games. Something to do with NTFS permissions iirc.
Just found a nice site about US WWII torpedoes:

Heck, the whole site is good: http://www.hnsa.org/doc/index.htm

Hello,
I just bought SH4 and am having video problems. The game comes up and runs. I get into submarine school and start the bit on navigation. But soon into it everything goes fuzzy. I exit the program and now part of my desk top and other windows are fuzzy.
I ran that program which analyzes if your computer will run it. It tells me all is well except my video card. It tells me I have a GeForce 6150SW n Force 430. What's odd there is that it has 521.9MB rather than the 128MB of required video RAM. And also that it meets the other criteria.
Any suggestions?
thanks in advance
That RAM thing is odd, maybe there's a hardware problem on your graphic card (RAM especially or overheating?).
Anyway, first thing I would try is a graphic card driver update. If that doesn't work try a Direct-X update. If all that fails I would runs a hardware diagnosis tool to check the graphic card, there are some freeware tools available. And make sure you do NOT overclock the card.
I hope you can play SH4 soon

I used points accumilated to upgrade my boat with Bow and Stern deck guns, now how do I switch from one to the other? Additionally I keep receiving the message that I have too many officers so I can't obtain the crewmen I desire but there doesn't seem to be any way of swapping one for another I've read all the FAQs here and at UBISOFT now address these issues nor does the manual or Help reference F1 provide any guidance. I would appreciate it very much if someone could assist. Thank you. JC

The AI will fire one gun while you man the other. You choose which gun on the deck gun menu tab at the bottom. The second gun should be added.
"Too many officers" Ubisoft added a limit on how many officers and petty officers a sub can have. You can edit that. Go into your Silent Hunter directory, data, submarine, then you'll find the list of subs. From there find the ".upc" file (ex: NSS_Balao.upc). Open the file. scroll down to "MaxPettyOfficers= ". The space represents the number of petty officers. Change that to what you want. I changed it to 80 for me. Go to the next line, "MaxOfficer= ". Change that to the same number. Save it, it won't change in game until you get a new sub. You need to make the change for each sub. And remember, back up the original file before making changes.
Thank you fireftr18, unfortunately when I try to open the upc file it directs me either to the internet or select aprogram, the internet didn't help and not being that literate with computer programs I don't want to just select some program and hope it opens. Additionally the stern deck gun can be see from the external view but in loking at the personnel (F10) if only shows the bow mount and there isn't any other icons or symbols to shpw that the stern gun exists. Any help or guidance will be greatly appreciated short of taking the program out back and shooting it. You support and assistance is greatly appreciated.

Open each submarines upc and add the 2 officer lines and save it, there are different numbers for each boat so edit accordingly. This example was added by the Crew Rank Fix by fred8615, download it from here http://www.silenthuntermods.com/forum/index.php?topic=745.msg3300#msg3300 and have a read of it or use it. As for your deck gun issue i have no idea.

The change won't happen until you get your next sub.

I have had some very weird errors.
I hope this is the right place to post this.
I have installed RSRD, and I noticed that Truk appeared on my map, with all of the towns labelled even from the farthest zoom on my navigational charts.
I decided to check out what the harbors were like there.
So I zoomed in, but once I got to a certain zoom level over Truk, my game froze and the computer crashed.
Does anyone know what happened, and how I can fix this?
You will have a better chance of getting help by posting this in a new thread. Also, you should include your computer specs, and your full mod list.
Good luck.

Hi folks, I tried to search this issue with no luck. The radar scope keeps coming back on in high seas, is there a fix for this?
Thanks

I guess I'm not sure what you mean about the radar scope coming back on. Is it that you are turning it off for some reason? Please give a more detailed description of what you are doing and what it does.

Sure, the radar keeps turning back on after I've turned it off repeatedly when patrolling on the surface during bad weather (wind 15m/s). I assumed it's an automatic procedure just like when surfacing, but I just wanted to know if this can be fixed like to stay off. I remember the same issue in SH3 and the fix for it was to leave the radio station empty. Maybe it doesn't matter to leave it ON all the time, can the AI detect radar emissions? :hmm2:

So far as I know, there's no way to permanently keep the radar off in SH4, though it seems odd to me that it would come back on if you haven't dived and surfaced again. In my experience that is what would cause it to restart. Yes, the enemy can triangulate on your radar signal, and this will result in search planes being sent to look for you, of course. This isn't something I worry about too much, as the SD radar gives ample warning of their approach. Since I'm running TMO I have the ability to raise and lower the SD antenna mast, so I will dive to periscope depth and use the radar to monitor the aircraft's proximity to my boat. In most cases they never see it, and when they do I crash dive and set a depth below 200' to evade their attack. I have yet to be damaged by an aircraft while running TMO.

I've had a couple of screen freezes and crashes on this last cruise for no apparent reason. I suspect a background app may have fired up. Years ago I used to run an app called 'End It All' prior to playing which closed down most un-needed background apps. I'm running SH4 1.5 with TMO, RSRDC & OTC plus odds and ends on an HP Pavilion m6 (i5 2.5 GHz with 8GB memory) running on Windows 7.
Do any of you routinely use and recommend such a background app closer?
Thanks

I've used Game Booster 3, from IO bit. Rockin Robbins recommended it. I can't really say how it stacks up, as my game already ran pretty well. It allows deactivated processes to be easily restored when you want.

Hey everyone, newcomer here :)
I've been playing SHIV for a while, alongside with greywolves 3.0 on SHIII as well.
There are couple of things bothering me on SHIV:
1. For some reason, i can surface quite close to enemy shipping during the night as long as i face them with my bow obviously, and even launch attacks from quite reasonable distance, or position myself before diving. On the other side, if i intercepted the convoy that is heading directly towards me, and i choose to approach it from below, suddenly enemy destroyers can instantly sense me and charge in my direction and begin depth charging me quite soon.
This makes no sense, at first i thought they separate from Convoys to act like some sort of pickets, but when i approach from surface, they do not do so. How is it possible for them to detect me while running 1/3 silent below, and not standard speed on surface.
2. How do Japanese manage to cover every square mile of sea with aircraft ?
3. I'm aware that Pacific is called that way for a reason, but isn't it ever a little bit hostile ? At least a portion of waves i see in greywolves.
4. When i stay submerged during the daylight, i bring my telegraph to a stop to save battery. Yet the submarine maintains depth. Is that possible in real life ?

Welcome aboard P821 Heroj! Always glad to have someone new to push around! :arrgh!:
It sounds like you're playing stock. Is that true?
1. It all depends on your approach, weather, depth, competency level of the escorts. When you are waiting in ambush, is your periscope sticking above the water. You should wait below the thermal layer until the last minute, then go to periscope depth.
2. It's a stock thing. The super mods deal with that.
3. I don't understand the question.
4. I don't know.
Now go help Armistead with his oar. He keeps begging the new people to help him. Us older members ignore him.

Yes, I'm playing stock game. I was kind of satisfied the way game feels polished with all patches applied, however, there were still quite some annoyances once you get to play it more.
As for third question, what i meant to say is, the water is always calm :) I never see those big waves and the entire seabed around the sub moving violently.
Who is Armistead ? :)

4. When i stay submerged during the daylight, i bring my telegraph to a stop to save battery. Yet the submarine maintains depth. Is that possible in real life ?
Technically, it's possible if the sub is well trimmed and the engineers on aboard are constantly multi-tasking to make up for any shifts in the sub's balance. It also helps if the surrounding ocean has denser layers for the sub to rest on. It would be a lot of work for the crew as every movement forward and aft on the boat would have to be compensated for. Because of that it's not a tactic submarines used very often.
By the way, why are you remaining submerged stationary during the day? You can recharge as you go.
P821 Heroj
11-27-13, 09:05 AM
Because Japanese have aircraft EVERYWHERE. Not even shutting of radar helps, because i still get radar reports even if it is off, which is also confusing. That leaves me with constantly having to press "+" button because i keep being spammed with reports, and have to dive every second to avoid combat.
So as a solution i simply dive and move very slowly with surfacing now and then to replace air and get a speed boost, until the night.
I don't find that annoyance in SHIII, well, not since i got no radar on an U-boat, and since weather is usually so lame that you don't get to spot anything until it is right in your face :)
BTW, how do i recharge while submerged ?

You need to get off the lackluster stock game which gives the Japanese WAY too much air coverage and often the wrong places. At least get the Game Fixes Only mod (GFO)
In the actual war, encounters with Japanese aircraft were much rarer than in the stock game and radar becomes an asset and not an annoyance. :salute:
You can't recharge submerged. I was referring to charging on the surface.

It's been so long since I played stock that I don't remember if there is a large variance in the sea. You should get some rough seas and storms.

Hello back :)
Have installed GFO, and am satisfied with it.
Another question arises. Destroyers seem to be too gr8 spotters. They start charging me from 25.000 feet. I can barely see them from that distance, let alone them seeing me. Am i doing something wrong, or is that vanilla issue ? Lowering speed to 1/3 and shutting off radar doesn't seem to help me sneak in.
If you are saying that they can spot you at 25,000 ft. in the daytime, that is to be expected. That is only about 4 nautical miles. At night, you should be able to get closer. Different mods will affect this aspect of the game, though.
In any case, once they spot you, you can expect them to be aggressive.
Good luck, Captain! :salute:

Hello back :)

Most Japanese ASW vessels weren't equipped with radar detection gear prior to 1944. So use it to your advantage to stay out of visual range of the escorts and track them until you can gain an advantageous position ahead of the convoy and attack submerged, or at night.
Hi guys,
I've got two questions I was hoping you could answer.
1) I'm wondering how people play their campaign. Do you usually radio in to receive new objectives as soon as you finish them, or is it more common to just roam around wherever you like? Also, how often do the skippers here return to port and end patrol? Is it perhaps more tempting to just go back for refits and go hunt again, only to end patrol when the hull gets too damged?
It would be interesting to know your habits on this matter.
2) I can not fully understand how to set my torpedoes prior to mid 1943. It seems that when I set them to "contact influence", I get alot of prematures. However, set on "contact" they rarely explode at all. It would be golden for me to get this straight once and for all.
Thanks in advance, subsim rocks!

I usually set up a patrol in the best convoy routs in the area I was sent, or sometimes I patrol in another area closer to my homeport. This is your preference. I sometimes refit but in most cases I like to end the patrol so I can see what upgrades are available if any and award any medals to raise my crews ability.
Before mid to late 1943 the MK 14 torpedo had a lot of problems, the magnetic exploder would not work most of the time:down:. A contact hit would be better from an angle rather than straight on as this would cause the firing pin to deform and not explode.:wah:
I usually use MK 10 torpedoes until these problems were fixed than I switch to MK46's.
The MK10 was a slower and had a smaller warhead but usually detonates with better results because these were always set for contact hits.:)

For me, it depends on how things are going. If things are going well, then I usually stay and do what I can. If I spend a lot of time in an area, and don't get anything, I may radio my status and get new orders.

Harry708's answer to this pretty much sums it up. I normally just keep mine on contact and aim to hit at an angle. I normally just use Mk14's because in game, it's easier than switching around.
Thank you for your quick responses, very interesting and helpful!

That's not a easy question...
Main question is… what’s the price range, what’s the main usage of the rig (although I think I can guess that one), do you want one that’ll keep you going game wise for a long time.
Most pre-built PC’s will be outdated after 1 or 2 years and you’ll end up having to buy a new PC because it can’t handle the newer games and graphics.
What I used to do is set two price ranges and look for a pre-built PC in the top and middle of that range Then I take a look at both hardware specifications. Why is PC one cheaper then PC two?
Now the hard part starts… Can I do better than the best pre-built without too much extra costs if I buy a custom built.
Motherboard:
I’ll check different brand motherboards and compare them:
Chipset, what CPU can it handle (can I upgrade to a better one later (when they are cheaper)) and what kind of memory can it handle (can I add memory, or better yet, can I change to better/faster one’s later on).
While you’re looking at the spec’s don’t forget to check the BIOS version of the new mobo (go to the manuf’s site for that and check the upgrades, read about the different versions on the forums, one might be worse or better then the other) ask what BIOS version is on it when you buy it at your computer store and don’t let them tell you it has the latest version, you need proof!
A good salesman (computer nerd) will be able to tell you what version it has and when and if you want to upgrade or downgrade they should be able to do that for you (for a little extra).
CPU:
AMD or Intel? (check clock and bus speeds)
Memeory: (RAM)
2GG, 3GG, 4GG, 8GG whatever (always compare brands, check the clock and bus speeds too)!
GPU:
AMD or Nvidia (AMD is cheaper but run’s a bit hotter so you’ll need a good airflow inside).
PS_ Its always better to have excessive airflow, good for cooling when overclocking.
HDD:
What kind of harddisk do you want (I haven’t bought a new PC in a long time but I heard there’s a new type of HDD chip onboard which makes HDD (in its old form) obsolete and is much faster aswell.
One thing you have to remember which is very important.
The PC you buy (either pre-built or custom built) will only be as fast as its slowest component.
For example:
You could have the best mobo with a CPU monster and a great GPU but your RAM is crap, the rig will be crap.
You could have the best mobo with the best RAM and a great GPU but you CPU is crap, the rig will be crap.
You could have the best mobo with a CPU monster and the best RAM but a crap GPU… your system will be ok but game wise it will not be what you expect it to be and will not be able to play a game at its highest settings.
And to be honest, a ‘gamers rig’ isn’t a gamers rig if you can’t set everything to MAX.
Good luck and let us know what you've decided to buy.
HJ
If you don't want to spend a ton of money plus sell your soul for a 'gaming machine', for about $400.00, you can buy a desktop off the shelf with 8 Gigs of RAM, plus buy a Radeon graphics card to put in it, and SH4 will run fine using Large Address Aware on a Win 7 or Win 8 64 bit Premium operating system.
That's about what I have and I don't have any complaints.
Happy Hunting!

It is with win 7. I already tried a lot of things but all failed. I hope is driver related and not a hardware problem as i am in no position to buy computer parts. I am surprised to see this in SH4 as i played recently all 3 S.T.A.L.K.E.R games with mods and no BSOD and i know those 3 games can push to the limits most PC's. Another game that gave me headaches was BF4 and even now after so many updates i still got BSOD.
I will try a clean install this weekend an will see.

Hey guys!
Just changed from SH5 to SH4, after getting really annoyed by these persisting bugs. Now at the beginning I thought of this as a feature, but now I think its a bug. Normally the direction of a ships movement is shown by as small line protruding from the contact marker, right? Like on this picture:
http://abload.de/img/kartewvsn1.png
Now...these are missing! Makes it a bit difficult to intercept ships precisely...
Could this be because I'm using OM and OMEGU? Is it a feature of these mods? Or is there another reason? Only did training missions so far to learn the controls, but now I don't know if I should start a campaign.

I am. No problems so far.

Playing on a Win7 64bit. I got 4GB RAM, is there any way to get SH4 (as it is a 32bit-game) using more RAM? The little .exe-Patcher from NTcore I'm using for HoI3, Shogun 2 and other games doesn't work with SH4. :wah:

I'm trying to take screenshots and the file location it gives me is bogus, none of my epic screenshots have saved:/\\!!
I hit ctrl+f11 just in time to capture my kill of a Betty with a HE round from the 4"/50 and there is no photo to be found. I hit it right as the explosion mushroomed to it max size silhouetting the Betty inside and all the pieced breaking off:wah:
Look in whatever folder you have SH4.exe in; that's where mine are.
That's where the little message says it is saved. i did a search for all .bmp files, no dice.
Now what's weird is that all of the recon photos I take DO get saved in my Documents folder, but no screenies to be found anywhere.

You can find them in the main Silent Hunter IV folder
that's where i am looking, i also searched my entire computer for .bmp files and did not find them. It's just not saving them. is there a way to change the target folder? stock 1.5 BTW

Go to your silent hunter wolves folder where the main install and SH 4 exe etc are located and look for files that say SH4Img@0000 for smme reason they don't show up as a regular bmp. file. If you click on one of these they will open to the picture you took using ctrl / f11.:)
Found it in a weird location on my tower PC C: > Users > Me > AppData > VirtualStore > Program Files (X86) > Ubisoft > Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific.
Not C: > Program Files (X86) > Ubisoft > Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific.
My laptop, however, no trace of them anywhere and my laptop is the one I most want the screenshots from
I give up... I did a clean reinstall on my laptop and it still won't save a screenshot.
:k_confused:
Snarf,
If you do a re-install again may I offer a suggestion? Think about installing to a location other than Program Files or Program Files (x86).
Instead, make a folder off your C:\ or D:\ drive and call it 'My Programs' or 'Games_2'.... to avoid issues with Win 7, Vista, and even Win 8.
If you do, your screenshots should be easy to find in your Silent Hunter root folder where sh4.exe is located.
One thing, the library system used in operating systems like Win 7 for example may be trying to put all your photo's together...... that gets confusing. The OS is filing them in your My Pictures when in reality they existed in the game folder.
Try a search for "SH4Img*.bmp"
....... and that should locate all of your SH4 screenshots if you can't find them in the Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific folder where sh4.exe is.
Of all the operating systems since DOS, I am a big fan of Win 7.

My installation is C:\SH4
The installation then creates it's own SH4 Folder which is:
C:\Documents\My Documents\SH4\data\cfg\
In the cfg Folder are all your "Saved Games" and "Game Play Settings"
Mods are easy to get to C:\SH4\Mods.
unfortunately it's not a matter of finding them, I'm pretty well able to find anything on the computer IF it exists, the images just flat out do not exist. I may try the reinstall in a new location and see if that works
BTW, my laptop (with this issue) is Vista 64bit, my tower (which I can find my oddly located screenies) is Win 7 64bit
It sounds like your OS is blocking the game from saving in the normal location. You might try checking the folder properties of the folder you have SH4 in. I often had problems with Vista in that regard (though not with SH4).

Hello everyone.
I was wondering if anyone had a mod where music and news files were created that I can download for my game, because I'm tired of no music and news from the era. That's the one downside to the game, and I have to play music cds and some of the music doesn't match up to the time period in my when I move along in it. Thanks fro your help.

I attempted this in what I thought was the correct forum, but as a bilge Rat ended up in an SH3 forum. Some of you may be there, too.
Anyways, thought I would ask here since you all are in SH4.
I want to go into GAMEPLAY SETTINGS and change to "High", Realism 73. Then uncheck Manuel Targeting System, Realism 58. Apply changes.
Then I want to run an American Career with these settings. But when I do I discover that the GAMEPLAY SETTINGS are changed based on the following Difficulty settings:
Easy --------> Low
Normal ------> Medium
Hard --------> High
Very Hard ---> Realistic
Is there a way to play a Career with the Hard setting and not have to worry about Manuel Targeting System until later?
Thank-you
Post note: I was just promoted to Nub.

Career settings, always a source of confusion for new players because it isn't explained well. In your office in port, there is a radio on the bookshelves on the left of the screen. If you can't see it, move the cursor over and the screen will scroll over and you'll be able to see it. Click on it, and it'll open the career options dialogue. Have fun. :salute:

While i am submerged at periscope depth with raised periscope, will the crew inform me about any visual contacts when i am not in the periscope station for example when i am in navigation map or in crew management?
That's a good question, you could see and report back... lol
Although it seems like it should be farther, at approx 5 1/2 - 6+ miles on the surface I get notified of a "Visual Sighting" which is especially useful for picket craft like Sampans. I'm not sure if it is Stock behavior or an edit I made.
Happy Hunting!

IIRC this worked in SH I.While at navigation map with periscope up you had contact updates on map.
Yes, that's true, another nice feature... I do get contact updates with raised scope(s). I've tried to Mod my game as close to SHCE as I can get it.
I wish the Devs had spent some, or more time (at least 1 career) playing SH1 to get into the spirit of the action in the US Pacific theater, and features available in 'Silent Hunter'.
Of course budgets being what they are don't allow for activity like that : )

Is there a way to know if a X warship has hydrophones, active sonar, depth charges etc.?I encountered a Subchaser (corvette class) and i didn't know its ASW capabilities.
Sledgehammer427
09-19-14, 06:26 AM
Well if it's a sub chaser you should expect active sonar, hydrophones, and depth charges at the least.
98% of the time it's guesswork. You could encounter a q ship and not know it till he's got his guns pointed down your throat and you're 1000 yards away.
Always assume everything's dangerous until proven otherwise
nionios

I always thought that battleships, for example, don't have ASW capabilities. The Subchaser pinged on me and dropped DC's.OK, someone may confirm the active sonar and depth charges but what about passive sonar?

Is there a way to set the revs of the engine manually or i should just select certain knot speed?
You set the speed to a knots value on that dial, and the equivalent RPM results from that. You can't directly alter the RPM.
merc4ulfate

There is a plate in the command room with RPM and knot conversions.
I have seen Japanese Q-ships with not only big bore cannons but also Y launchers.

I finally installed Traveler's mod pack today. I'm not a novice at SH4, and I'm no expert either, but darn it if it feels like the enemy passive sonar is overkill.
Anyone have any tips on approaching a task force now? I used to get in front, go below thermal layer at silent, all engines stopped, then slowly rise to periscope depth to take my shots.
I tried this today and just sitting there pretending I was driftwood at 230', I got picked up and received a beating from 3 DDs.
I thought that TMO had some pretty sensitive enemy detection devices, but this blew my mind. I feel that I need a change of tactics to accomplish my original task. Not sure where to begin though, since what i'm doing seems to be the popular tactic here on the forums.
Edit: Now that I think of it, I maybe was spotted by two DDs while shadowing the TF to get ahead to a firing position. But at any rate, suggestions on how to tackle Traveler's mod?
HertogJan
01-04-15, 02:31 AM
I use TMO too and can't get my head round it either, therefore I use easier AI.
Most of the times you'll get picked up for some reason or another but what I do know is this, you need to keep your silhouette, in relation to any detroyer, as small as possible.

Traveler's mod adds a high altitude scouting plane. It's possible you were being watched and didn't know it. Once you're detected by the plane, it will stay out of sight, follow you, and continue to report your position.

I use TMO and RSRD and I do not seem to have an issue. For the most part I feel that issues can be tactics driven. Some of these mods make it more real so you have to be creative and think outside of the box.
230 feet is not deep enough. See that red line on the depth gauge?? Get there and below it if possible then as the first escorts go by rise up in the middle to end of the convoy. By the time you fire and get back down you can actually be fairly far away from your firing point by the time escorts arrive at the center point of that location.
After your first hits it wont matter if your heard so all head flank towards the least guarded area for a few minutes then stay deeper than deep and quiet and they will most likely not hear you.
Today I had my first task force attack with TMO and RSRDC and I have to admit I had to reload 10 times, because I also couldn't figure it out. It was an night attack in mirror smooth waters at a stationary task force screening the Tarakan or Balikpapan landing, which consisted of 8-10 DDs and a Sendai class (Naka) CL. MAybe it wasn't the smartest idea ever to attack a DD group but anyway.
After several attempts to infiltrate failed (was never killed, just scared them too early to score) I decided to attack from outside their formation. In the end, I went deep (75m) at 2kn to 2'500m away from my target and about 1'300 from the nearest DD. Then I launched my four bow torpedoes (Narwhal class) at the Naka class and various points in front of it and luckily, two torpedoes scored me 5'000t of Japanese warship.
So in the future I'll only try infiltration during rough seas on a moving convoy/target if I have to but otherwise attack from outside.

I was given the mission of photographing a harbor. I sunk all the ships I found in harbor, but could not photograph the harbor because there were no ships left to "lock" on to. Is there a way of getting around this limitation?
I thought the brass would get a better idea of what the harbor looked like after we sent all the ships to the shallow, but maybe I'm wrong?
Thanks

You gotta take pictures first. Maybe brass wants to know what the Japs' new camo looks like. Plus theycan't confirm what you sank if you didn't take a photo

Welcome back! SHIV IS an addiction! :subsim:
SHIV from Amazon could be either version 1.4 or 1.5... The "plain Jane" version is v1.4, but if you got the version with U Boat missions it will be v1.5.
When loading the program v1.5 loads with a silhouette of a U boat with the tag "U Boat Missions", and at the main menu screen in the lower RH corner "v1.5" is displayed.
IMO both versions are solid but have a few "undocumented features" that are discussed in SS, and workarounds written by a few dedicated souls in various threads. v1.5 is the target program for most of the mods.
As far as mods/patches/fixes/updates, SubSim is chock full of 'em with a number of threads generated by the gifted and prolific SubSim Kaleuns who picked up the ball after Ubisoft lost interest. Checking the Stickies in this thread is a good start.
