Theeeese is soo goood. The SH3 map is nicely scaled and very editable.. here we are.

Mission editor with a position of West15, North10.
Sextant(V1.0) is on the button
http://www.vanjast.com/SH3Pics/Sextant.jpg

and so are the map longitudes and latitudes..

http://www.vanjast.com/SH3Pics/15West10North_02.jpg

I just have to put the scale indicators on the map, maybe draw a nice sextant graphic.. and we're off to sea for testing
:) :) :)

Very nice. Now I only have to learn how to use a sextant and off I go ;)
Very good idea though. I really like the idea with the latitudes/longitudes in the map. Especially for the Pacific scenarios in GWX it could come in useful. Thanks

That is excellent work!

I'm certainly looking forward to using this - it will add that extra touch of realism to a fantastic sim!

----- Forgot to add. I'm using SH3 1.4b, GWX + 23rd Dec updates and SH3 Commander 2.7 - will this be compatible? Thanks

.. Now I only have to learn how to use a sextant and off I go .. Using a sextant is as easy-as-pie.. Using the North Pole star (polaris), whatever angle/position it is on the sextant is your latitude (north/south) position. SH3 does not seem to have any of the anomaly's like atmospheric refraction, etc... and the map has been flattened so that it's linear. Establishing longitude is a simple matter of comparing the SH3 local time and the Greenwich time -> 15 degrees earth rotation equals 1 hour. Star maps will be provided. This is a scanned, 'fitted' and very much reduced Northern Hemisphere map. The Mod one is big, but I'd encourage you all to buy this, as it's cheapy. http://www.vanjast.com/SH3Pics/NorthernHemisphere.jpg This list goes on so I think the Mod will probably be broken down to game files and educational docs.. :)

Almost forgot.. I think the developers might have put in a 'fish-eye' type of visual effect as the sextant scaling had to be adjusted. If you look carefully at the Sextant pic above you'll notice that the 0-10 degree range is larger than the 20-40 degree range then increases again up to 60 degrees. I made some quick missions with all the latitude positions and found the final (v1) sextant to be fairly accurate, considering the amount of sub roll that the game has on a flat sea. I think that one will have to average out the reading to get a decent reading... which is probably the way it was The Sextant (screen view on 1024x768) has a 60 degree range with the following conditions. 1) The conning tower (F4) view has to have the sea level on the very bottom pixel of your screen. If not the scale changes and readings will be inaccurate. 2) If viewing above 60 Degrees adjust your view to max vertical and Zero now becomes 60 Degs. It's a condition that I cannot change, and found to be the simplest/effective for implementing the mod... but at sea, you have all the time in the world to take a reading... :) :)

Is it just me or has this server missed the 'line-feeds' in the text ??

I don't have a clue yet, but what I'll do is ask the relevant NYGM & GWX modders if they want to include it in their next versions, or failing that, I'll provide the explicit details on where to insert the mod data - This'll require a bit of carefull editing on your part, which will be a mission, but if you're into this, it'll be no problem.

Van, to make it easier, why not make it compatible with the JSGME mod installer? Besides, those that might not want to keep it, can easlily take it out of SHIII with mod installer.

So how do we tell our latitude in the southern hemisphere?

Van, to make it easier, why not make it compatible with the JSGME mod installer? Besides, those that might not want to keep it, can easlily take it out of SHIII with mod installer. There might be a problem if any of the big mods also change the files that I've changed/edited. I'll check on this. Maybe the big mods can have an option for (un)installing this mod.

So how do we tell our latitude in the southern hemisphere? Same method (I'll be testing this side of the world soon). I've got a Southern Hemisphere star map similar to the Northern one. But here there is no South Pole star to work from. On this side of the world one has to know the elevations of the stars (the star map) and take readings on the zeniths (highest point).

As an example One of the 3 stars of Orion's belt lies virtually on the equator. This star could be used in a similar way as the North Pole star, when 'down south'. Once you have a reading your position will be (90 - reading) South You can choose other stars depending on what's easier to spot.

I'll also provide a sunrise(set) and moonrise(set) almanac for the time period. You can also get your readings from this.

Excellent work, Van!!

Here's a free DL of STAR CALC which can be set for any date and time between 1939-1945

http://www.relex.ru/~zalex/main.htm

It can be used as an emergency Nautical Almanac...just plug in your known or assumed Lat/Long and it will give you the altitudes and azimuths of all celestial bodies.

OMG, this is awesome vanjast. I have yet to learn the whole process of taking star sightings for real (only did fake ones in SHI by reading the coordinates under favourable weather conditions at night), but this is exactly the reason why I'm into simulations.
Thanks a lot for your work vanjast, can't wait!

The maps are done... Just some minor changes to the small one, and maybe a grid colour change. I'll try this out later.
