Hi there to you all!

I'm playing with GWX for some days now... and today happened this:

I was sailing in Biscay bay when i spotted 2 merchants... after a while even a DD came up. At 8000 m the DD started chasing me.
After some fighting/fleeing it finished its depth charges but continued chasing me even if i reached 180 m of depth and kept them for some hours...
The DD didn't "ping" me at all and i was sailing with my "rig for silent running" on.
I changed direction 4-5 times but nothing. reached 200 m... nothing: he was always above me... so i gave up. really annoying.
So: no chance of escaping in my opinion, unless you have the sonar buoy? (it was 1941 so wasn't possible yet).

Another thing:
How do you manage a convoy of 2 ships and 1 DD, 11k away in clear weather at noon with calm winds and sea? If i dive cannot reach them, if i go nearer they spot me. Just wait for the night to attack?
Any help would be gratly appreciated.

This is where your hydrophones come in handy.

What I will do is plot a course running just outside of their view and parallel to their course.I will then run on the surface at flank speed to get ahead of them. All the while making a quick dive to periscope depth and checking the hydrophones to get a position to make sure I am still on course.

After I get to what I think is a good position ahead I will turn and head onto an intercept course and dive to periscope depth and go silent and wait for them. This has worked for me 95% of the time.

Try reducing your speed to 1kt when silent running
That usually helps you get away

It is over for the arcadish destroyers. It is time for the big boys that GWX has provided. One has to remember that not all u-boats could evade the warships not matter what they did. Welcome to reality!

1kts is correct....it helped me escaping a DD, who kept on chasing me long after the convoy continued it's course.
You can try 2kts, and if you're using the stealth-meter, you can see whether it's safe to do so.
It wasn't, in my case. :p

I went to 245m, and manned the hydrophone myself.
I kept on changing our course, to keep him at our stern (=smallest profile, while still sneaking away, allthough it's on a very low speed).
When I heard him dumping depthcharges - and revving up his engines - I increased speed to 3kts, made a hook to L or R, and went back to 1kts...eventually changing depth by 20-40m as well.
After 3hrs - all in realtime - I had managed to loose him.

Excellent man! I hope others read this because there has been some complaints of the destroyers being too good. Hog wash in my view. Furthermore, the hooks you made to the right or left, you can ask the engineer to do this for you. I seems some have forgotten these buttons because evading was so easy before. Nice post dude:up:

The arcade destroyers are gone! Thanks for the reality check GWX!

They are tough. I got the crap beat out of me last night by three destroyers, but in reality I should have looked for easier prey, snuck away. The neat thing about the mission is that I was playing to that point at 256TC ( before coming upon a convoy ) and came across my first airplane, awsome.

Destroyers are evil. Airplanes are even worse.

I don't even consider fighting it out with destroyers or airplanes now when I encounter them during patrols. When an enemy plane is spotted, I just dive and hope it hasn't spotted me.

Furthermore, the hooks you made to the right or left, you can ask the engineer to do this for you. I seems some have forgotten these buttons because evading was so easy before. The knuckle-L and -R buttons work great, yes.
But NEVER use them in a situation like described above.

I did all my evasives manually - clicking on the bearing-dials...L-hook=270/R-hook=90.
And since I was on the hydrophone as well, I could easily adjust our course the same way, to keep him on our stern. He goes from 310 to 320, so I go from 130 to 140, stuff like that.
It's pretty basic navigation, but just more micro-management....which is good, otherwise those 3hrs would have been a bit boring. LOL.
Been shouting numbers at my crew for hours, poor guys.:damn::ahoy::ahoy: :ahoy:

Example, knuckle-left on surface: boat makes a sharp 90 turn to port, accelerates to Ahead Flank, and goes to 25m depth.
Otherwise, it will maintain current depth.
So there's why you don't wanna try that. :D
From the SH3-manual...not sure if GWX has changed this.
I never use the buttons anyway, I think.:hmm:

Definitely would plan for a night intercept...:yep: By calm weather I don't even try anymore during the day...

Tangled with some planes today SE of Iceland shot down an Anson then came along 2 beufighters and took out my flack crew and my AA guns am not playing with those guy anymore, changed my options so when a plane is spotted I crash dive from now on.

Remember you can run with decks awash - which helps you get a bit closer, and if you want to make a long range attack, use the old steam powered torpedoes - they have a range of 12.5km on slow - just make sure the track will not pass too close to any other escort/ship or when they see the wake they will all evade before the torpedo hits.

Single mission in real time. Spotted a large convoy lightly escourted (One D) The D was at the front with the convoy in columes. I do not like depth charges so I decided to take on the D by stealth and then the unprotected convoy (GWX). I surfaced and took a reverse course of the convoy. When I was about two thousand metters ahead of the convoy I turned to 90 degrees to my port and went silent at periscope depth With scope down . When the D was about 1000 M away I kept my bow at 0 and waited for him to cross my bow at about 700 M. When the AOB was at 0 I lanched tube one and then tube 2. Tub two was without a solution. Both fish hit and she sunk like a brick. Great fireworks in GWX. I then finished off three merchants and a troop carier. I was so happy that I did not know that two BIG D's were on my a--. Me and my crew ended up drinking a lot of water. Moral is never get to happy.

We dive in pride and rise in honor. May we never be forgotten.
