People keep talking it up so much on the forum its sounding like just all hype. So it just makes the game harder? That's it? Any part of increased realism work in the player's favor? Its just been kind of annoying, everytime someome mentions some thread somebody chimes in with 'just wait till GWX, it won't be like that anymore'.

But I haven't heard any specific info on the features GWX will offer. How will it make SHIII more fun to play?

It's called "marketing" :D The details have been kept secret until now...
No kidding it's out soon, just have a go, read the doc and give it a try. If you don't like it, then go back to some other version of your choice.
Until now all supermods (RuB, IuB, NYGM, GW 1.1...) have gone towards giving more reality and immersion, not more "fun".
Some people like the "real thing", others play just for the fun, important is that you find what suits you.

Latest news can be found here.....

Also have trawl though the mods section, there is plenty of info regarding GWX.

Naturally, due to recent happenings, the GWX dev's are a little 'cagey' with specifics. However, as a beta tester, I can assure you that GWX is indeed fun to play, after you have adapted your 'style'.

Well, the idea of doing patrols in unique places definitely sounds interesting. And it also appears that they added a lot more 'activity' in other parts of the world- I heard that in stock SHIII anything in the eastern hemisphere is pretty much dead but from the sounds of it they've livened things up in GWX.

Dramamine is for wussies and non-quals! Be a man and tie a garbage back to your belt loop "in case of emergency".

On manuevering watch out of Charleston, SC, we used to break out the cigars (before they banned smoking) and sardines while we were rocking and rolling on the surface, just for the added "atmosphere". It was often just enough to make the Nubs hurl.

I admit though, I was seasick once. I was a Nub (Non Useful Body) and it was my first underway. We were on the way out from Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Valejo, Ca. and it was unusually rough. I was "cranking", washing pots and pans in the galley, and watching that food and grease slosh back and forth, back and forth in the deep sink, the smell of the aux. diesel exhaust getting sucked down the bridge hatch, the nervousness on my first underway, ...next thing you know I was "praying to the stainless Gods"!

Alternatively, you can stick scopolamine patches behind your ears. As a sailing skipper I saw it worked well on many beginners. Also so some using plastic armbands with acupuncture pressure point inside... Guess after all these years have seen just about everything... :D Thks to my genetic inheritage, have always been imune until now after 1000s of miles. I must say the only thing I hate is having to do some work on the diesel engine while at sea. Usually have to come often outside for a bit of fresh air...;)

Personally, I don´t care much whether there is traffic in the Black Sea or Loch Ness - hopefully GWX will add to both realism and immersion, but I must admit all I´ve heard so far looks pretty hyped - especially all those "GWX will fix it" statements - "Your girl-friend is dating your best friend?" "No problem, GWX will fix it!" Let´s wait and see... Cheers, AS

GWX is just brilliant. Especially the little things and the tiny details. I mean the way ships move and follow the waves is just fantastic. It's enough to make you sea sick, and trust me I have been in dramamine for the last month :yep: :yep:

There are new campaigns, new theater of operations, great looking subs, a lot of very well made ships and a damage model that rocks:up:

I cannot say anything more as the kpt will have my head and heart for brunch but I totally believe that GWX is the best thing in the SH3 world at the moment.

Sounds promising, no doubt about that. The reason why I´m a bit sceptical is that we´ve seen a LOT of "GWX is GREAT and fixes ANYTHING" whereas I´ve seen very little examples which might serve to confirm the hype. So I take it that there are new ships and new harbours, and the ships and subs move more realistically and follow the waves. Does that mean that you´ll never be able to hit any ships when they are more than 300m away? I´m looking forward to seeing a realistic damage model. So what about those graphical enhancements? Will there be a new U-Boat interior? Added compartments (would that technically be possible anyway???) etc. etc. I guess I´ve just to do what submariners do most of the time: sit and wait. Cheers, AS

Fair enough. All I will say about GWX in general is that the beta testers spreading all the "hype" have seen and experienced what they are talking about... be it the new ship damage models, new ASW/Sensors package, new torpedo characteristics or what have you... Sure the graphics and sound are great... but they also serve to mask and hide MOUNTAINS of coding. (In GWX there are new, historically correct player flotillas, player U-boat bases, and two new entire operational theaters... all integrated in such a way that no existing functionality is lost... and a million lines of campaign code to compliment these changes.)

Regarding adding new compartments... It is certainly possible. However, intuitively... I am concerned that if one day we did that... that adding them would kill frame rates. The 3D models for additional compartments DO infact exist... Getting it done RIGHT would likely be an entire project on its own... with questionable "return value"... and would likely also be for only one U-boat type. (VIIC)

The thing is ... we have agreed not to say anything, but you still feel like you have to say SOMETHING. That is why there are lots of GWX IS GREAT! statements, since thats pretty much what can be said without pissing off the devs.

*Amazing damage model (the best yet, hands down)

*Great looking ships

*Lots of ... err ... new stuff, like the Moltenort U-Boat Memorial in Kiel (Shown in
the Trailer)
http://img465.imageshack.us/img465/1912/uboatemeorialfromwateroh9.jpg
The U-boat Memorial, located at the "Moltenorter Schanze" in Heikendorf near the
city of Kiel, is dedicated to the memory of the submariners of the German Navies
who did not return from sea. It is a place of silence and remembrance, but also a place
of reminder. Here, the names of more than 35,000 submariners killed in two world
wars are engraved on bronze plates. Submariners who lost their lives on U-boats
during peacetime are also remembered.

*New Theatres of operations

*And tons more!

I have no connection to the GW Dev team, and I would never have praised this mod if I didn`t think it was great. (I wouldn`t have said it sucked if it did either, then I would just have said nothing, but thats just my upbringing)

Oh well, thats my two cents, gents.

Thanks a lot for your replies. I´m certainly looking forward to seeing GWX and I´m sure it must have been a LOT of work, I do appreciate your work.
Maybe I´m just getting impatient now...

I´m surprised you confirm that the interior model CAN BE EXTENDED!!! So why is it that no-one has done it before? I know there´s been a debate going on with some people saying they don´t need it and others stating they would love it for immersion.

I´m for one would sell my car to get a fully accessable Type VIIc U-Boat. I would also love to be able to walk through all compartments (as, ironically, you can do in Medal of Honour..., but not in SH3) and I would love to walk along the deck, too.

The framerate cannot really be an issue - SH3 is about 2 years old now and the hardware has improved since then. There´s DirectX 10 knocking on the door and GeForce 8xxx series are about to pave the way into the next generation --- so there´s no reason to be afraid of low framerates in SH3. Those who are unable or unwillig to buy new hardware don´t need to install such a mod.

My two cents.

Cheers, AS

AS,

No one can deny that GW 1.1a was kick butt mod. This mod got me back into Silent Hunter and I have not stopped playing since. I purchased a Saitek X52 at $110.00 for IL2. Used it for about two months until GW 1.1 was loaded on my machine. Now the stick collects dust along with IL2. With that said, I would suspect that GWX will kick a whole 'latta butt.

Or do they "share slots" and replace one another as the conflict unfolds?

You have more flotillas without the loss of any of the others

I think it has to do also with the way the games are played. In a flight sim, you usually can pack a whole mission from starting the engine to parking back on the dispersal in max 1 1/2 hour. The pace of a subsim is very different, you can spend sometimes 4 or 5 hours in an empty ocean, or tracking fishing boats or coasties until you can identify, or realise at the last moment the ship is neutral... Which in turn implies you have to spend a lot more game time to have the same quantity of useful action.
I personnally like to make breaks and do something else in between patrols to avoid a feeling of "too much", then when I need my fix I'm on the bridge for at least 10 days at 4/5 hrs a day (or rather night...;)) - I play usually max TC 128 and all action phases at TC 1.

Sure, you can install the GWX over your GW1.1a, but prepare to have alot of CTD´s and other problems. So, uninstall, re-install, patch to 1.4b and then install the GWX.

So GWX is bad according to Kyster...:rotfl: these quotes are from GWX betatesters!

And Neal, I would never use such language! :smug:

I'm having a thrill of my life playing with GWX 1.1a  can't have scratched more than the surface of it as I'm starting on 8th patrol in Type IIA, but so cool and great 1.1a is, I can only look forward to what the dev-team has been cooking for us :ping:

I find it very heartwarming to see the same kind of generosity here in the subsim world as in the online simracing where I've spend the last 8 (?) years.

:hmm: can't believe it's almost ten years since I last were on a subpatrol in Silent Hunter??

So GWX stands for "Gonna Wait till Xmas" or what? Problem is I´m not really enjoying my current campaign any longer because I´m so impatiently waiting for GWX which means (another) re-install... Can anyone please make up some unreliable rumours on when it´s supposed to be released? :lol:Just for the fun of it?;)

Psst. Don't tell anyone! i've heard GWX has already been released to a select number of people and they don't want anyone else to have so they are keeping it to themselves.

Why can't you all agree on waiting 24 hours so that I can download it first. I should be the first one, since I've never played TGW....:rotfl:

let me guess, uninstall SHII with 1.4v and GW1.1a and reinstall the whole thing and at last the GWX?

or just install GWX....

I dont use other mods, beside 1.4b and regular GW1.1a

any new ships in GWX? would be nice :D

Sure, you can install the GWX over your GW1.1a, but prepare to have alot of CTD´s and other problems. So, uninstall, re-install, patch to 1.4b and then install the GWX.
Umm, Dowly, you should know that installing over anything other than stock SH3 with v1.4b patch will not be possible... ;)

Ha, I first got SHIII on December 24th last year so it's kind of appropriate to be playing a brand new SHIII on that date...hope it's released before then though! :yep:Let's say...next friday!:yep:
