I torpedoed a couple ships in the side last night and about half of them blew up and the other half took a second torpedo.

However, I put a few headfirst almost zero angle on bow shots under a small tanker and it barely phased it. 2 torpedoes, 1 exploding 1 m under the nose and 1 exploding 1 m under the center and the ship barely sank a bit into the water. And it's not just that tanker, destroyers, cap ships, everything. I dont even bother with under the keel unless I have no other choice since all it does is make the ships sag a bit into the water. Heck, it doesnt even blow off the propellers half the time for an under the tail shot.

The under keel shots are far less effective than in the side shots and I think thats backwards.

What do you folks see?

Hello

I am playing GW as well. Initially I was frustrated with the damage model but now I can't live without it. I think it's brilliant. Usually keel shots depend on the weather (and see) condition. I tend to set the depth to 0.5m under keel, but so far I've managed to sink (with a single under-keel shot) only destroyers. Usually if I want a single torpedo kill I aim for the 'special' areas of the ships. Have a look at this it might help you http://www.communitymanuals.com/shiii/index.php?title=Ship_Weak_Spots

Well, look at that....all the important stuff was in the back of the ship! I was shooting up the nose and there is nothing there. What a bother.

I'm going to download the ship damage recognition guide

:D

I'm glad the manual helped you. It takes a bit of practice to aim for the 'correct' areas on the ships but soon enough you will have them sinking one after the other. Don't forget that these shots usually work under ideal conditions, so if you fire with a large/small AOB or in heavy seas there is a chance that you will need more than one torpedo to sink the ship.

Good Luck and Good Shooting

NYGM 2.2 reintroduced the keel shot zones but still not to the level they were in vanilla SH3.

I really enjoy the damage mod used in TGW as well. Yesterday while playing the single mission I put 7 eels into the HMS Illustrious over a period of 5 hours in between evading the 4 tincans. A fun filled day.

I got to as close as i could somewhere under 3000 meters " i had a destroyer sniffing around behind me,so i was watching both him and the carrier at the same time so i didnt notice the exact distance from target" and scored 4 hits. I then dived to 100 meters for 3 hours evading DC`s came back up to periscope level and observed she had a severe starboard list but continued to move at 5-6 knots.

I then put in 2 more eels and dived to 100 meters again evading more DC`s after another 2 hours i went back to periscope level and she had a more pronounced list with no forward movement. I had traveled to the port side so i charged the stern tube and with the 7`th eel she broke into and went down. woohoo i dove back to 100 meters when the 4 tincans that had been on the starboard side came roaring toward me and gave me a good thump`in for another hour, then left huffin out blacksmoke all mad. I had to watch the show with the external cam, man it was outstanding.

I should say, i have played this single mission for at least 10 times and everytime the outcome has been different, this was the first time i hit the carrier with more than 2 eels. It has been my experience with just 2 hits she keeps on rolling along and increases speed until i just see a dot of smoke in the far distance.

I gave the revenge a good 5 eel working over in loch ewe last night. All 4 tubes to pepper the midsection, one more in the bow for good measure and one in the tail on the way out. All shots ~=90 degrees at about 5 m depth.

Too bad she didnt sink but that is due to the harbor sinking bug rather than my efforts.

Nice tough ship though.

Try to hit those tough ships in critical areas like the amunition storage room or the boiler room. That way you can have them blown up with one shot and you get the kill as well :D
