Sure. Your custom emblem needs to be in TGA file format and the image needs to be a perfect square (128x128, 500x500, and so on). Place the file in your installation folder titled \SilentHunterIII\data\Emblems\Sub Emblems. You should then be able to choose it from the in-game list

Apparently the Royal Navy use it as well. Once a RN ship has seen action in the face of the enemy, is allowed to fly the Jolly Roger while entering the harbour at the end of the patrol :know: :know:

Ok as some of you may know I'm new to SH3. I just started a career like two days ago. I'm currently using a Type IIA U-Boat. I was just wondering in the sim if you can like choose an emblem for your U-Boat.

You can of course choose one. The option is located in your office under the modify your sub function. There is an option to add an emblem. However you'll need to add some if you want one to be there to select. Mega mods include them as well as some independant mods focused on emblems (not really mods as much as an emblem pack). You can add one yourself of course too.

On my second patrol I encountered a lone polish merchant coasting along all fat and happy. I was quite a bit from my patrol zone, but I figured I may as well take my opportunities where I can find them, ran an Intercept and gave 'er all three torpedoes! (I'm in a TypeIIA.)

Continuing on to my patrol I spotted another good target! "Yay!" thought I, "Another kill!" :arrgh!:

That's where the trouble began. I had no torpedoes! :o Frantic, I demanded an answer from my weapons officer (Bubba)

"guh-huh-huh Torpedo 1 is in queue sir! Torpedo 2 is in queue sir! Torpedo 3 is in queue sir!)

Frantic, I dashed to the bow torpedo room. I had 2 petty officers (one of them a torpedo man, and 4 sailors in there, but the efficiency was non-existent. Frantic I filled the entire compartment with petty officers and put my Weapons officer in to over-see them... no noticeable effect.

Long story short, I reached my patrol zone (AN47), patrolled for 24 hours, and then went back to Kiel. They never reloaded the torpedoes, not even after I took away their grog... We missed no less than 3 lone merchants, because I had nothing to shoot them with, and I had to run most ignobly from 2 lone armed trawlers, for the same reason.

As soon as we got back to base, I got the chicken for my Conning tower, My boat is now U-15, Chicken of Shame, and let that be a lesson to them! :stare:

How do you change images into .TGA format?

I use Photoshop but any good image editor that allows you to save as .TGA format should do it. Open the original in the editor, resize it if necessary then save it as .TGA. If you want the background transparent you'll need to set that using the editor as well.

Nice. I'm working on a set of emblems based on German family crests. I've collected about 120 of the base images and am working through the .TGA conversions and some clean ups. Hope to have them posted somewhere in a week or so, but don't hold you breath that long as other things may get in the way.

It just gets resized. I guess the larger it is the more memory it will take. I've got some at around 450x450 px and they work the same as the smaller ones that came with the game.

I've just finished a Custom Emblems pack of about 280 images including historic german heraldry for most of the top scoring UBoat aces of WWII as well as some that I think just look good. As far as I am aware none of them were actually used on a uboat during the war so it's not an attempt to do anything historical, just some nice graphics to have some fun with.

I'm in the process of attempting to upload it to UBRS without much luck. So now I've uploaded to Filefront. I will add it at UBRS when I can get the technology working properly.

The archive runs to about 4.27Mb and all you need to do is drop them into your Ubisoft/SilentHunterIII/data/Emblems/SubEmblems folder. They will then be available once you have enough renown to get custom emblems on your sub. Enjoy.

Sailor Steven None of them are really historical but I don't really think that matters too much. To me it's a bit like wearing a wild looking tie and shirt with an Armani suit. (Not that I can afford one of those).
I quite like the manga cartoon theme and the nose art theme. I might even do up some of these genre packas as well if I can find time.

You need to get the image you want saved as a square say 200x200px .TGA file. The GIMP or Photoshop will let you take pretty much any image and save it in whatever image format you want.

then you have to stick it in the data\Emblems\SubEmblems. Once it's there and you have a sub in port and you have I think about >1900, you just select the emblem you want.

I'm on it and looking for the book. The local military bookshops don't seem to have it listed so I might have to buy it online from Amazon or somewhere.

The NFL pack was fairly quick and dirty as the .GIF files were already transparancies so just had to resize and mess with the bits that were meant to be white.

Somebody did a high-res set of emblems with all the ones available. I can't find it right now, but I'm pretty sure it's included in GW.

@Sailor Steve: I fixed the link. Thanks GW has a lot of emblems but not all. I use GW and there are a lot that are on this site but not in the set with GW. With the new Flotilla's in GWX I was planning to start with the Flotilla emblems that I can find and then move onto the individual boats.

@jimbuna Thanks for the offer and without committing you to any promises I'd appreciate any help I can get. When I did the heraldry pack it took about 30 hours to churn through about 280 emblems. I did have the advantage that in most cases I had colour original material to work from which saved a lot of time.

I use GIMP and Photoshop mostly although I've had problems with Gimp were it doesn't always convert to TGA properly so I use photoshop for the conversions and some of the editing. Photoshop PSD is easier for some of the layer work as well IMHO.

Sadly...no mention of colour or size :nope: But I reckon by looking at the coloure of those already available should give a fair indication of the colours to use.

U755...a sawfish on both sides of the tower, plus a simple white shield with the one-line inscription (black) "Es geht weiter" (It goes on).

Sorry for the delay in getting back here TarJak but I have done a little more research so here goes:
U321...that sir I believe is a baby lion cub.
U348...the coat of arms was a gift of the city of Soest...the key is the symbol of St.Peter, patron of the archbishopric of Cologne (former ruler of the area).
U409...I'm not certain mind, but in Sept 39 the British sub Spearfish was attacked and badly damaged by a German subchaser. The commander of the sub KL Eden, later took command of the destroyer Inconstant and sank U-409 and this is the emblem he took off a surviving crew member. My guess would be either 'exploding flak' or more probably 'a bandaged thumb'.
U421...Hmm...not much info out there!! It looks like a small log.

Gotta go pick the kids up but I'll research the last two shortly and get back to you :D

Last two from your list :cool:

U425...That sir is a 'boot'...only one survivor when this boat went down Mechanic's Mate (T) Herbert Lochner. He stated that because of the constant darkness in the Arctic, they called there boat 'U-Schabau' (Schnaps=whisky). The boats crew regarded the rugged hiking boot as a fitting symbol for the boats convoy activity.
U458...I believe that is a side profile view of the conning tower. The emblem for this boat was a white flying bird (dove like) whose wings were spread to look like the letter 'M' or an upside down 'W'.

Thanks Jimbuna. I've been going through the emblems from that site and looking at the size a low level of detail, I've decided that to get a quality result I'm going to have to buy the book you mentioned and see if I can scan higher res copies.

The res on these is just too low and the size is not adequate to get good enough starters.

I've got Church's emblems and they cover most of the II's VII's and IX's but usually only one variation so if you are after them DL that pack from terrapin's site.

Thanks Dave. I'll check it out and see if Santa left me enough money this year to sign up. To be honest US$45 is a bit rich for "special content" particularly as there is definately a limited and not growing supply. Not too bad if it is a one off payment though.

It doesn't matter what size you make the image, SHIII's engine resizes it to a standard emblem size on the side of the sub.

This is what to do if you want to post images


Instructions to take and post a Screenshot
1. Take screenshot by pressing CTRL+F11
2. Change the Screenshot to .jpg and resolution to 640x480
3. Go to www.imageshack.us (http://www.imageshack.us/) and host the image there
4. Copy the "Direct link to image" url
5. When you want to post it here, make it look like this:
"UrlOfTheImageYouCopied" whitout those " "

The picture in my sig is posted like that, and I also keep it on my own server, so it definitely should work for you too. Maybe the files are in improper format? That should not work for TGA, I suppose, so try to post JPG, PNG or whatever you can transform them. Also always add the 'http://' part in the address.

I've been having a go at emblems and have come up with two that are now in use in

my two careers.

The first one's predictable!

The next one I created in PSP 9.0. I tried to make this one historically credible

but admit I was influenced by that Jules Verne film "20,000 Leagues Beneath the

Sea" where the monster squid tries to pull the Nautilus under.

but it's causing problems because sometimes the background appears and sometimes

it doesn't, as can be seen by what follows. I've tried using the background eraser

in Paintshop Pro to set transparency and also black and grey as a background. The

To make sure the background is transparent use GIMP or Photoshop and select the background as a separate layer, make sure you set the default background layer to transparent and cut the image background layer out of the image. You should then just have a transparaent BG image. Alternately cut the image you want into a new transparent image and then save as a TGA.

Look at page 9 in your SH III manual titled "U-Boat options" this will let you install the allready listed 'U-Boat emblems' and if yours is not in there do this: First save it as a .tga then copy the .tga, go to Program files\ Ubisoft \ SH III \ Data \ Emblems \ SubEmblems and paste. Now when you skroll down the given emblems ( when in game at port ) yours will be there, click on it and it will be attached to your conning tower. :)

Now get out there and kick some A$$. :rotfl:

Your problem is a common fault with the earlier release of GWX :yep: ...To remedy 1) disable ALL mods from JSGME 2) download the Dec23rd mod (available from my sig) 3)enable Dec23rd mod using JSGME then the rest of the mods :up:

I had the same problem with photshop conversions. It was fixed with the Dec23 patch for GWX. Never happened before GWX on any of my emblems. All fixed onece I added the patch.

I noticed my emblem pack got uploaded to UBRS a while back. Hadn't been there for a while and the last time I looked (Mid November) it hadn't made it public.

@ Morts; Nice coat of arms. I'm thinking of doing a pack of German Coastal town's shields as emblems if anyone is interested. I waiting to get my PC out of drydock (It's having major upgrade surgery) so when I get it back I'll start putting together some more emblem packs.
