Question about emblems....i've got an emblem i'd like to use, i've put it into the emblems folder but when I select it in the game, its only displayed as a large white box :S

Whats wrong?

What format is the file and is it square? Does it show up OK when you look at it in the specials screen?

The file must be in .TGA format
The file must be square, i.e; 200px by 200px

The only other question is are you using any mods like GWX. The first version of GWX had a problem with emblems but this was fixed in the first patch. 1.02. Use 1.03 though cos that fixes some other bits and pieces and adds some enhancements as well.

I use Photoshop and also use GIMP. Both handle TGA format without any problems. You need your editor to be able to handle layers so you can clean up the backgrounds and get good transparency results.

Heres something I wipped up in 10 minutes :)

The Triple Horn of Odin is a stylized emblem of the Norse God Odin. This symbol consists of three interlocked drinking horns, and is commonly worn or displayed as a sign of commitment to the Asatru (http://altreligion.about.com/od/asatru/index.htm) faith.


The horns figure in the mythological stories of Odin and are recalled in traditional Norse toasting rituals. Most satories involve the God's quest for the Odhroerir, a magical mead brewed from the blood of the wise god Kvasir. The tales vary, but typically, Odin uses his wits and magic to procure the the brew over three days; the three horns reflect the three draughts of the magical mead.

If I could get a somewhat detailed method of how to actually apply it and how to turn a windows picture into a .tga I would.

So recapping - I need to know exactly how to apply it and how to convert one

OK, lets assume you have a file in a folder somewhere. I'll use Photoshop as an example but most of the actual commands are irrelevant.


What I do is open the original file in PS.
Use the marquee tool to copy the section of the image (if there are bit's you don't want) or the whole image.
Open a new file with a transparent background, give it a name and make sure the dimensions are square e.g.; 200px by 200px. I use the longest value from the original, so if it is 300 x 280, I make it 300 x 300.
Past the copied image into the new file.
Use the tools you have to clean up or enhance the image. If it has a background I use the Ps magic wand tool to mark the background, create a new layer by cutting it then deleting the new layer cos I want the image to be transparent around the border of the image not with any backgorund colour.
Save the new image as a .TGA with the name you want to see in the list if emblems, somewhere and then make sure that you only load it into SHIII after saving while in port and rolling back SH3Commander settings.
Copy the file to C:\ProgramFiles\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Emble ms\SubEmblems\ or what ever drive/directory structure you have SHIII in.
Start SHIII and either start a new career or open a saved one. When you get to the office screen, click on the desk that let's you configure your sub.
Select Specials then Emblems and your custom emblem should be there as an image. Double click on the image and you should now have a lovely new emblem to look at with your external camera.Hope this covers everything. PM me if you need more info.

After moving my emblem into my emblem folder (without rolling back SH3 commander,whoops?) I went to look for it in game only to find that I had only one emblem to choose from, the default 7th flotilla emblem? Would this be caused by not being at my home port etc (although I'm pretty sure I'm in Kiel..)? Or is it caused by not rolling back SH3 commander first?

IIRC you need at least 1500 renown available, to be able to see custom emblems otherwise you only get the one for the flotilla you are in. If you finish theexams you should always start a career with enough. All you gotta do is sink more ships!:D

Heh, just upgraded my hydrophone and didnt have the required renown. Makes me mad as on my first patrol I saw the HMS King George V all by herself (may have been the Aston) in a firce storm. Before I could get to a good firing position she spotted my conning tower in the trough of a wave and fired a round at me before going full throttle and leaving at 20+ knots. Will always be remembered as the one that got away :(

I was wondering if anyone who had spent time producing a nice coning tower emblem, found that it had been stolen, and was being used by another player. Or perhaps something like this could never hapen here.

I've spent time producing hundreds of emblems just so that others can steal them and enjoy them.:D

I think people here are relatively self policing when it comes to the body of work that has been produced. When someone has picked up that a mod or piece of work has been plagarised it usually comes out in the wash and gets sorted one way or another. As long as credit is given to the person who did the work, then it should be fine for someone to use as long as that work has been put into the public domain for use.

The emblem Steed has a shot of on page 14 of this thread is one of mine and I'm more than happy for him to be using it and showing it off to everyone. He even credited me which is even nicer.

Would I get upset if someone didn't credit me for my work? :hmm: Not really unless they were actually claiming it as their work. I have to admit to using source graphics which I didn't do as part of my compositions (the one Steed shows is a good example). The sub comes from another emblem wich was on an actual sub, the eagle comes from a photo of an actual german insignia I took and the torpedo was captured from in game and resized trimmed etc. I had the shield from some free heraldry graphics I DL'd a few years back. The placement of the elements and the colouring is my own but I don't really lay claim to doing anything special that I'd bother about copyrighting and if fact I don't think I'd be upset if someone further modified my work to suit their needs.

That's part of modding as far as I'm concerned. You modify existing bodies of work and give them to the community. What happens once you do is very much beyond your control and therefore you shouldn't get too upset by anything that happens to it once it's out there.

If you're using it for your system alone, and not claiming it as yours in a public forum like this one, there's really no harm. If you MUST publicly display it, that's a different story.

That redhead I posted isn't mine; my wife actually found the file and sent it to me, and I'm still trying to track down the source. Thus, I didn't make it available as a .tga for others to use, and didn't claim it as "my work." Once I do find the artists/source, I'll make sure to give due credit here.

The trick is, remember ALWAYS where you find files/artwork, esp. on the 'net, and ALWAYS cite sources wherever possible and/or give credit where it is due. Remember, for personal use, there are some allowances in copyright law.

You can. You need to find druck_radio2.tga, 7, 9 etc depending on the type of sub you can then cut and past any image of the same dimensions over the poster on the radioroom wall in that file.

There is already a very fine mod with quite a lot of scantilly clad models which I think is still hanging around.

I've just finished a Custom Emblems pack of about 280 images including historic german heraldry for most of the top scoring UBoat aces of WWII as well as some that I think just look good. As far as I am aware none of them were actually used on a uboat during the war so it's not an attempt to do anything historical, just some nice graphics to have some fun with.

I'm in the process of attempting to upload it to UBRS without much luck. So now I've uploaded to Filefront. I will add it at UBRS when I can get the technology working properly.

The archive runs to about 4.27Mb and all you need to do is drop them into your Ubisoft/SilentHunterIII/data/Emblems/SubEmblems folder. They will then be available once you have enough renown to get custom emblems on your sub. Enjoy.

Both samples are excellent. However, if I was using a sub skin which was not black for the purpose of concealment, those would be excellent for a sub with a summer or winter skin. However, my IXB has a black skin, so I think a white outline or gray outline of a devil's head may be more appropriate. What do you think?

Just the outline of the Devil's head, dull colour, perhaps gray so that it cannot be seen that well by the enemy. On a black background so that it will fit on the black conning tower.

Should be easy using Photo Shop (or e.g. Gimp under Unix). You got good selection tools to just select the white background and can delete it, which would produce transparent space.

Has anyone come up with a way to put anything on the bulkhead behind the sonar/hydrophone guy? No reason the RO should have all the fun, and that bulkhead is SCREAMING for something on it. I've no idea which texture it is; but I do believe you may be right about it being a multiple-use texture. After all, it is, in essence, a grey wall, and I imagine if I looked hard enough, I'd find lots of those aboard.

I've found this site: http://www.uboataces.com/ref-insignia.shtmlwhich appears to have all of the recorded emblems used by Uboats in WWII.

If there is enough interest within the next 3 days, I'll start working on colourising all of these to release as a pack. Some of them are a bit difficult to make out so I'll do my best with what I can. I won't make any guarantees on when the pack will be ready as I work fairly long hours and have a wife and kids to consider.

To make it easier on everybody, I'll do them in stages and release them as I go. If anyone want's to help out with this or has information on the colours used let me know via PM.

Just in case, Ichso, if the image itself is not sqare, you can make it sqare by adding more canvas to top and bottom of the image, so the entire file (background included) is square. ;)
For example if the flag (image) is 100x150 you put it on a 160x160 background, that way the file will be square. :up:

I just wasn't sure how SH3 handles not-square emblems, didn't test it either ;) Just in case, Ichso, if the image itself is not sqare, you can make it sqare by adding more canvas to top and bottom of the image, so the entire file (background included) is square. ;)
For example if the flag (image) is 100x150 you put it on a 160x160 background, that way the file will be square. :up:
CapZap Spot on CapZap. What I normally do is open the source image in an editor, select all then copy and then create a new transparent square image with the longest side of the original as the value for all sides. e.g; If your orginal was 500x300px make the new one 500x500px.

You can then paste the copied original into the new image file. It should then fit perfectly with transparent panels either side of the image you are working with. I then usually rescale the whole lot to around 200x200px or 300x300px depending on the detail level of the image and save it as a .TGA file. Put that in your subemblems directory, load up SHIII and you should be able to select the new image.

SH3 requires the image to be square otherwise it won't work as an emblem.

Could anybody explain me,why there are two different conning tower emblems for U-48 in GWX (black cat in different versions) and some U-boats do not have an emblem at all,for example U-51.

Also,what U-Boats had those "non-number related" conning tower emblems like AdlerKopf,Sweine,Swastika and so on?

@StanT The emblems in GWX are based on an earlier pack by EvilJester76 IIRC. He did a lot but not all of the emblems. This thread links to a site with the complete image selection. Some boats had more than one emblem both at the same time and at different times during the war. Some boats kept the same emblem throughout the war. Some had no emblem at all.

It depended on the crew and the skipper and what stage of the war. IIRC pre war all uboats just had the number painted on the conning tower and just before the outbreak these were painted over. The first emblems did not really start to appear until end of 1939 after the Scapa raid by Prien.

You need PaintShop or PhotoShop, there is a free program called Gimp but I am not sure if you can do them with this one. You can turn pictures or create your own and save them as 80x80 or 90x90 as a TGA format and pop them in to the Sub Emblems Folder.

Saint Paint Studio (if you can find the free version) is a nice and easy to use piece of kit ;)

I've just finished "Beowulf" and I was wanting to make an awesome shield for my conning tower featuring none other than Grendel himself. Though, I can't seem to find the correct resolution for the file. Any hints?

What is it you are trying to find? Do you have a source image you want to work with? The files just have to be square say 300 x 300 px and in .TGA format. The game will resize them automatically to fit the object on the conning tower.

The resolution you use can be anything as long as it's square.
