Those are the emblems I used in the last couple of years. I'm still using the same campaign as Heinz Ziepel (below), and the date is October 1943. 1944 and 1945 have yet to come, of course, so they're not yet decided.

I don't know if any size matters or what the size limit is if there is one. The T-Rex picture I posted is the actual size of the one I saved into my emblems folder. I've taken a look at all the emblems in that folder and they're all different sizes. I'd say just drop your picture into the folder and try it out on a test sub to see how it looks. It seems that the game resizes the image automatically to fit.

Here's my personal U-boat emblem. It was made to commemorate the patrol where I sank two destroyers that were hunting me after I raided a convoy and earned my boat the right to have an emblem.

Some of you have seen it already in another post. I wanted something unique and agressive, so I made it from scratch with pen and paper, scanned it, then touched it up using PSP X and making it into a .tga with background transparency (using a graphics tablet is murder).

I wanted it to be simple so it was easily recognized and also have the look of having been painted on by hand, by the proud crew in celebration of such a sucessful patrol.

It's currently being sported on the conning tower of my much beloved VIIB, U-47 (I really need to find a unique boat number, too.)

they were afftaid it would make me a target more so than i already am. the felt that by having the ability to identify a particular sub by its emblem, and thus giving the allies the ability to speculate that the skipper was an ace they might press their attacks more aggressively.

When I first started researching U-boats, I quickly came to the conclusion that with so many U-boats there would be so many stories with each and everyone of them.

So I came up with a crafty plan to pick one U-boat among the 1,153 U-boats that served during WWII.

My plan was to count the amount of letters in my first, middle, and last name and add the letters up per name;

From this I adopted my U-boat and from that day I researched everything about her, from the Korvettenkapitän [Heinrich Göllnitz] to the 47 individuals who perished on the 17th May 1943 [all hands lost].

It's my understanding that there weren't any preconditions & that the choice of emblem was up to the individual commander. For example a number of boats wore the Olympic rings as their captains graduated as part of Crew 36. Another example would be U-505. At one point in time the boat's emblem was a lion swinging a battleaxe. Her first commander's name was Loewe (Lion in English).

Before the war U-boats wore large painted numbers on their bridge superstructures. When war broke out these numbers were removed & the boats were not supposed to display any kind of emblem/insignia at all. This regulation was widely disregarded & according to my information, never enforced.

Check the Subsim download page. I think that Evil Jester76's historical emblem pack is still available. It definately has U-108's emblem & you can use it to add a few other emblems that weren't included in GWX (ie. U-65, U-68, etc.)

Excuse me, can someone tell me why my emblem which has a black BG (as you can see in my first post in this thread) comes out with the background transparent in the game? I mean if it's just masking out the black then why are the black lines inside the emblem still there?

It's not just masking out the black. The game does not mask any colours. The background and any other detail that needs to be transparent, needs to actually be part of the background. I would assume from your description that the background is actually a transparent layer but the black details that still show up are not.

it's a one layer drawing, I checked. (and I do mean the TGA I used in game not the JPEG I posted here so people could see it.)

Yep all .TGA's are single layer format, however they can contain transparency info if properly constructed from the start.

You'll need to copy and paste the parts of the image you want in an editor as a multi-layer file, then save again as a single layer .TGA. IIRC the steps you need to follow are posted in this thread in the post I linked to above.

Already found an easier way to fix my emblem. put a single pixel wide white stripe down the left side, now it displays perfectly, and the white line disappears. If it's stupid, but it works, it ain't stupid.

Selfmade from an uboat.net emblem, hence the GWX-one for U-66 was black. How can i move it to another place on the tower?

Only two ways of moving it. You would have to play with the emblem location in the turm files or put the image into a skin and not use the emblem.

The colour of the first pixel (1:1) will be shown as transparent on the emblem.tga.

If the first pixel is white - the whole white stripe will be transparent.
The computer recognizes the difference of one changed RGB value - invisible for the human eye.

The first pixel (upper left corner) of the TGA defines the colour to be shown transparent. In your case it is "white".

You should be able to solve your problem now.

Hi WP, the duck is a slightly edited emblem from the Swedish Airforce. Flight school unit at Ljungbyhed.
Save your pick as a .tga, 256x256 or any other square. 24 bit seems to work best. If I remember correctly the first pixel in the upper left corner sets the transparent back ground color. Put in SilentHunterIII\data\Emblems\SubEmblems.
