View Full Version : Is this possible to mod? smoke idea

Hi Kaleuns,
I was wondering if someone from the moding gurus here on subsim could take on this problem- one of the few last annoying things in sh3. It's about the ships smoke- it comes straight aft regardless of weather conditions like wind direction and strength. So I thought perhaps the smoke direction could be combined with the wind params, to result in smoke coming not only in the one direction, but for ex. backboards or steerboards. It would also greatly increase the realism because you couldn't guess the ship's course and speed on his smoke trail over the horizon.

I notice a lot of that stuff for tweaking smoke in the mini tweaker.

How come I never noticed that?

What's neat, however, is that the smoke is dependant on the ship, not physics. So if the ship's listing heavily to port, for example, the smoke goes sideways instead of up. Interesting:p.

I think this is because the smoke particles are fixed on the top of the funnel. If the ship's listing to port, the funnel goes in the same direction  and that's why the smoke makes a little "turn". But the general smoke direction is all the time backwards.
I'm not strong at all at repacking dat's and so on, I can only make some small changes in .cfg's, so I can't solve this problem myself. But perhaps if someone could "separate" the smoke from the ship's physics it would be at least possible to make random smoke direction settings via sh3 commander, like thermolayers or malfunction mod? Even though it wouldn't be a perfect solution it would be better than the "vanilla smoke". :yep:

The flags also blow straight aft, never with the wind.
