Default Another option to run old subsims (DOS) under XP

Once every few weeks, someone asks about running AOD (DOS) or SH1 (DOS) under XP. The options available are DOSBOX or using the XP DOS subsystem for SH1 with VDMS sound.

Myself, I am using the above approaches. But for those who were unable to get a good result, there is now another option to try.

Microsoft has just made Virtual PC 2004 a free download. Thus, you can create a true DOS emulation running under XP. However, you will need an installable copy of DOS.

Also, it only works with XP professional.

Ah since someone decided to sticky my post, then I should update it with the fact the Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 is now out of beta and available as a free download:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...c/default.mspx

Also, I see that the DOSBOX 0.7 has recently been released. Although I still use DOSBOX 0.63 for AOD, there is also a DOSBOX 0.65 which works with AOD. However, I think 0.63 does a better job of minimizing and then returning to full screen than later versions.

Although I prefer AOD (DOS), I was able to get CAOD (Windows) working under VirtualPC running Win98 SE where I could not get it to run directly under Windows XP with sound support.
