Default why...........?

Just had a another sesion with SH4 still not up to much on it im at the moment playing a career mode game, just to see whats what ect.

Now then just a question the people that are on you submarine to start with are they deaf and blind? or were they recruited from the funny farm? the reason i ask is because today i managed to sink 4 enemy ships (3 cargo 1 life boat) without a problem yet i come to intercept my next victim which it was a radio report so i headed down to the location and began a search.

Bright day its about 1300 slight swell no rain no nothing, im in the chart room plotting a search pattern and then i hear the sound of scraping metal i didnt even have a crew member shout oi theres a ship coming no they just stared at the thing and let it ram me which it subsequently sank me :@

Is this normal can they not see a 7,000 tonne cargo ship 30 feet away ?

Ask your sonarman to report the closest contact,he should pick him up..you should get a visual before you start plotting in a room that has no windows.

And use your periscope to look around, never focus on one target, and get a good idea of the tactical situation, this was clearly your own fault.. allways attack submerged.

Make a routine 360 degrees sweep with the periscope before you attack a target.

In fact your crewmembers gain experience over time in a campaign and its a very important asset..i just spend 5150 renown on 1 crewmember cause he is a sonarspecialist,he will also give the rest of my crew an experience boost..more valuable then radar or weapon upgrades.

You will learn these things over time, also listen cause you will hear a ship coming in too close, use a crashdive to get under him..the sound grows stronger over some time so you can get away before you hear the definate stumping of screws..the best room to listen is the sonarstation you can also follow contacts here if you want to manualy, its fun.

Good luck on your next patrol!

I assume you are on the surface. There is no excuse, as you will find out at your
General Court-Martial.

Yeah i guess i will and yes was on the surface bear in mind guys i come from another sim where batteries well what are they i have a 50,000hp nuclear reactor and can out run most ships and my crew are second to none, i can sink a ship 80 miles away and never have to surface.

This is a whole new ball game i did do SH3 for a while long time ago so this is seeming really hard i cant just track locate and send a fish in 5 minuets here dam what advice could you give me to become competant skipper in these submarines il be starting again in the astatic fleet in the S class this time.

First of all you must understand that your crews eyes and ears are their only sensors you have, sonar is primitive and requires a good operator...in many respects he is the most important man onboard..

Your second most important instrument is the periscope, they are your eyes.
Then comes the deck watch, they are there to spot any contact and report them to the captain or watch officer.

Also the SD is very important..it will give you time to crashdive.Watch who says what,SO is sonar SD is (air)radar...

If you have a contact try to establish what kind it is as soon as you can, aircraft are especially dangerous.

Take your time for an attack, never rush things..

There is so much to learn in this game to become succesfull..you can find alot of tutorails on this forum and i could write forever..

I spend alot of time reading the official Navy submarine manuals of that period, that gave me alot of ideas to implement in my tactics.

Also i have been into subsims since 1986,that helps alot i must say:rotfl:

I think I'm missing something here....your deck watch abso-freakin-lutely should have called out "ship spotted" if they were on deck & if they were not too fatigued from staying at battle stations too long.

If they didn't or if it seemed they didn't you either missed it when they did, the crew was asleep from exhaustion due to forgetting to relieve them from battle stations (as aforementioned), a possible temporary glitch, they weren't posted on deck (left at damage control etc.)

I run all over the place at full 8K+ time compression on the surface & I always get taken out automatically by the watch/radar/sonar. If I get into a bind (which I have) it's always been my own fault

Probably the most important quality is patience. First try to establish the targets course, then speed. You might need several readings to get it correct. Then try to get in front of the target at between 500 and 1500 meters, perpendicular to the target's course.
If you do this, you have a good shot.
Convoys are basically the same, except you have to do this while you are evading the escorts.
This is not easy, and after May, 1943 almost impossible. Which is why the BDU called off the Atlantic submarine campaign at that time.
U-boat losses late in the war were almost 100%.
Many of the super-mods play this way. Not so, the vanilla game. To learn the game, it is best to start with SHIII, in 1939 and become proficient at attacking. Then the SH4 U-boat addon. The American fleet boats are a bit different, but with the above experience they are easy to learn, and a bit easier (to play) as the Empire of Japan had poor radar, and the ASW air coverage was poor.
Tracking and targeting are basic trigonometry, and/or basic vector physics.

What are the best boats to use in the start id immagine the S class only having 4 tubes being utterly obsolete yet the gar class are modern with loads of tubes.

The big diffrence i have is that i am used to commanding 18,000 tonnes of delta IV's we never surface always aim to run away and hide and when we need to come out and fight everything is there for us to use the information is updated there and then targets are located 30 to 50 miles away and shot at from distance as you can appreciate the modern marvels of tech help you do this.

Its more i now have to regress and work backwards i now cant fire a shot at a ship behind me with the forward tubes at 15 miles away and guide it to the contact.

in our systems we can pick up locate track and enguage in 10 minuets so its going to take an hour maybe here the diffrences are very apparent.

I like the system it will teach myself how to go back to the drawing board with tactics for the nuclear submarines i now need to work out how to engauge the best angles in which to engauge how to work all the rest of it out and what boat i should use as a first timer and where from so help advice much needed much appreciated too.

You need to update to ver. 1.4. If you have the Uboat ver or Silent Hunter Gold you should be updated to 1.5. Can you see the version number on your load up screen.

This shouldn't happen. Once in awhile you may get shot at from a ship that you're crew doesn't spot if you're using higher time compression, but
this is a bug.

If you missed the crews first report of ship spotted, you will not hear them say it again either.

WWII Sub's are by far very different from playing "Modern" sub's.

I've had many situations of seeing this in the text window:
"We're under attack. Ship Damaged sir. We have flooding sir. Ship Spotted". In that order. But after getting some quality deck crew and giving them some medals, they spot a fly in pitch dark at 8 miles away. I don't really know which scenario annoys me more .

But I agree that your little experience beats it all. Even an sleeping deck crew would wake up when hearing a huge ship comming their way. But look on the bright side. If the ship hadn't decided to ram you, you would have passed it completely. At least you've found it, sort of.
