Apparently he has said that his suggestion is what the community at large wants, in that if such a move stops kids from carrying breadknives, and similar, for protection, then it might prevent a stabbing. Which might be true, but what they ought to be doing is trying to create a state of affairs where people don't actually feel the need to carry such things in the first place.

Well, technical it is racist because it discriminates based on race.

However, weather or not it is racist or not isn't a issue.
The term "racism" is full of negative connotations that do not always apply to it.
Racism is not always a bad thing in it's self.
The issue is weather it is moral or not. (and perhaps weather it is effective or not).

It's one of those moral issues that asks us to chose between a small evil and a
greater evil.
Or to put it another way, should we give up the liberty of being able to walk
around with out the police searching us because of the colour of our skin in order to
gain the security of not being stabbed/mugged/etc.?

Giving up a liberty to purchase a safety eh?.....:hmm:
I wonder if anyone has a nice quote about that....

That said; I haven't made up my mind on this issue yet.

Some ethnicities and/or nationalities and/or social groups are over-represented in certain fields of crime statistics. That is not racism, that is not a big issue of public uproar, that is simply a statistical fact that is being proven black on white every year in the yearly police statistics. And since we have that kind of report in Germany every year, I am sure that the British police has something like that, too. what use has that report if no consequences are allowed to be drawn from it? PC should not have anything to do with it. If it is olike that in reality - of course, nowadays that is something different in Europe's brave new world.

I am glad a black police officer has said this should be done. I would go far as to say step it up 100% on all kids and give the police hand held metal detectors, first step if there caught with a knife is to sit down and find out why they have a knife on them. I know there is a good 80% probability they will say it's for my protection but never the less we must get to the bottom of this and find the proper solution to this problem.
