Default Medals and promotions

Do medals do anything other then look pretty?
Or do they actually raise morale or make your crew perform better in anyway?
If so, how can you tell?

And an other thing, how do you guys decide wich crewmembers you reward with a medal?

What about promotions?
How do you promote any of your crewmembers?
When in base i've got a ton of promotions all stacked up but when I want to drag them, I get a message that my crew hasnt earned any promotions.

So, how and when can you hand out promotions?
And, as with the medals, how do they effect your crew?

Default Promotions and Medals

I started a campaign long ago in 1942 right after PH bombing. I had a very green and inexperienced crew. I started the game with a 51% realism setting and now I have 12 patrols under my belt my crew is very expeirienced.

As you sink more tonnage, the crew will be made able for promotion. And as far as I can see, medals just hang there, when in port all of the moral, health, ect. are 100 percent and you have to do some pretty nasty things to kill any of your sailors.

As for who to award medals too, I always award to my crew leaders first. then if I see someone had been really badly injured I start with him for a purple heart ect. If my torpedo team made a critical kill, I'll reward them first on and on. But as for any long term effect on the game I haven't noticed any.

Have a good Patrol.

AaD-Marine
Posteddocument.write heres what stats effect what compartment.

Torpedoe Compartment-effected by Mechanic and Guns stats.

Engine compartment-effected by mechanic and electric stats.

Command compartment-effected by Mechanic, Electric, and Watchman stats.

Sensor compartment-effected by Electric and Watchmen stats.

Damage Control is effected by Mechanic, Electric, and Guns Stats.

Officers slots are located in the Command Room and give bonus to the entire vessel.

Leaders slots give bonus to the compartment

Damage Control appears to favor the engine Specialization Qualification. pro-tip for those who get damaged often, put a Engine specialist as your Damage Control leader.

I look at the 'experience' and 'efficiency' gained by my crew during the patrol..

The sailor / officer with the highest exp. gained, gets a medal.
The sailor / Officer with the highest eff. gained, gets a promotion

It looks like this:

[Name of person]
Experience: *** (+**) ****

Moral: ------
Fatigue: *** - ***
Health: *** - ***
Efficiency: *** / *** (+**)

The thing I look at is whats between the brackets. I go over all of my crew and look for the highest points gained.

When I see a sailor / officer hasn't gained any of those mentioned above within a patrol I send him on his way so to speak.

Have no idea if this is correct though, but that's what I do.

Unless I'm mistaken medals in SH3 made your crew members with the medal less prone to fatigure. Although they redid the crew interface considerably for SH4 and that may not be the way it is now.

I liked the system in SH3 because with enough medals it made crew management considerably easier. It also made crewmembers more efficient if you had casualties or need damage control.

Experience gained from patrols is also affected by your realism settings. The higher the realism, the more experience you gain and the more medals and so on. I don't think they changed that from SH3.

Default Medals

Is there a medal for best attempt at getting your spouse to understand the attraction of SHIV? I really need to work on getting this one....
I guess they could award it with bars if you did actually succeed in getting your spouse hooked too:rotfl:
