TypeXXI GWX

What's the file-name for a XXI-pinup mod?

I want to convert my typeVII-pinup to a XXI.
The typeVII is called druck_radio_7.tga

*bump*
The old pinup doesn't load, when I start in a typeXXI?
Do I have to rename it to druck_radio_typeXXI.tga or something?

Also, does anyone know custom-skins for this incredible Uboat?
I only found Fubar's XXI, but that one still leaves lots of spots untouched (the XXI looks very unfinished, in SH3)...radar&radio-antennae, schnorkel, periscopes, the 2 flak-gunner positions, everything has the same dull grey colour.

And why do the dials in the control-room have no backlight? Certainly with redlight on, they're hard to read.
It works ok at the attack-scope in the tower:

Do a windows search for druck_radio and see what comes up, it might be as simple as druck_radio_type21.tga.:hmm: Or if you're unlucky, these files are packed in the relevent .dat file.

The XXI was never really finished, so there is a lot left wanting.

As far as skins go, IIRC Fubar is the only person I know of that has skinned this boat(edit - maybe Venatore aswell). The XXI is a PITA because it can only be skinned by unpacking/repacking the dat file. It's a lot of work for a small gain.(considering the amount of time you actually get to use this boat)

I can't check files at the moment but I'm sure that if you investigate the Type21 dat file you should find what you need. If you are thinking about skining the 21 then you should know that there is no separate conning tower dat, it's all one model/graphics file.(which is why the 21 is the only tower to 'show' damage when hit.)

Guess I'm unlucky...I tried your suggestion, but could only find the original GWX-pinup, and my own (which doesn't show ingame, in a XXI).
So it has to be in some .dat-file, because it's a different pinup than the original GWX-one.

I was thinking of trying to do some skinning for this one myself, but as I have no experience in SH3-skins, I doubt that this is a good idea, as it seems to be so hard for this type of Uboat.

I know there is one other XXI-skin, on UBRS, but the download-central times out on me right now (it's called typeXXI_modern, or something like that...it will probably be an all-black skin).

http://files.filefront.com/Skinning_.../fileinfo.html

That's a pdf which will give you the basics of skinning, including file examples and tools required. You'll be able to tell if you will be able to skin from that. Don't be frightened by them, once you know where each bit is, it really quite easy to skin a boat.

If you still want to try, just give a shout and i'll be glad to help. I might even be able to unpack/repack the Type 21 dat file for you or tell you how, also, if you are happy working with graphics files, I could send you the tga file for the XXI and then I could pack it for you.

:hmm:I've never used the 21 before and it's been ages since I looked at the files for it, time for re-education.

Thx for that link...I might give it a try.

Btw, UBRS worked now...I downloaded a skin called modern_type21skin.

preview:

Compared to Fubar's work (which has only tga's that go into the textures-folder), this one has a couple of .dat-files, that go into the library- and submarine-folders...it's JSGME-ready, though!

This is actually the 1st time ever, that I climbed into a XXI!...and I have SH3 since release, lol.
I used SH3Commander, to get one in the 11th-flotilla at Bergen...I expected to get it in April '44, but it only showed up, after I selected July in SH3C (?).
So we departed on July the 2nd (my birthday is the 1st of July...nice present, haha), which hopefully gives me around 10months of combat-time.

OMG, this thing has loads and loads of torpedoes...and all advanced equipment is already installed! It's really the latest of the latest stuff.

The downside is, that upon leaving the Norwegian fjords, there's already 3 taskforces being reported outside...
Normally, I avoid any confrontations with these enemies, but now I'm drawn to them like to a magnet LOL.
Just watched my boat zipping by the F12-cam, submerged, at full speed

One advice, if you're going to start in this Uboat: use SH3Commander, to change the # of days spend in base between patrols.
I picked 1 day, because this career will already be short enough.
...if things work out like I'm planning.

It's something else, if you finally make it to the XXI during a long career, though.

This skin is great.
It even has a decent view from inside the flak-turrets.

I know the coloursheme is hardly historical (compared to Fubart's Dunkelgrau51), but taking this boat out to war is pretty fictional anyway...so I go with this beautifull matt-black:

@GWX-devs: I was able to clock a submerged topspeed of 21kts (!), using the Schnorkel...
Allthough I read, that it could travel submerged at nearly 18kts for a short period of time.
And one other thing: the RDF-loop isn't raised together with the radar-antenna (see image)...at least, not on that game-load. The 1st time I loaded this boat, it was working, but while using Fubar's skin.
Could it be due to this custom-skin, which was made by changing some .dat-files?

Certainly is! I'm actually surprised the Radar is working too.

Right...:hmm:

But it shouldn't affect the working of radar and/or radio, correct?

Btw, I have a screenie to prove that topspeed, if you don't believe me.

Paajtor - I like the look of that skin - where did you get it from (i.e care to share )?

danlisa - would you consider extending that offer of help to a poor old man like me as well?

It's on Uboot.RealSimulation.com (UBRS).
Click on UBRS DLC, and scroll down to SH3 Skins...it's on page3, called ModernType21 Skin.zip.
DLC registration is separate from UBRS.
The skin is JSGME-ready.

A few notes:
- tower-emblems don't work with this skin
- custom pinups either, not on this Uboat-type anyway
- RDF-loop doesn't raise

A tip: use Fubar's Elite Uboat Crew Uniforms for this skin...really gives the final tough.

I cancelled my SH4-preorder back then (see sig lol), but I'm keeping an eye on it, for when it gets to a state that suits me.

The XXI is a great Uboat...beats me why I never tried it before, in the past 3 years.
It's submerged top-speed of course is absolutely beautifull...and it also means, that I can reach any depth within a minute or so.
Went to 240m yesterday (max=275m) without any problems.
And it's incredibly quiet, even when not running silent.
It can dive in less than 25secs - which is nice - but surfacing takes a long time...the watchcrew appears on station very soon, but it can take up to 10mins, before the forw.diving planes finally retract.
Oh, and reloading torpedoes.....wow, now that's what I call combat-ready! 20mins or less!

But I noticed one odd thing: I can't select the speed in small increments (like +/- 1kt) while using the schnorkel...it always reverts back to a general speed-order (like ahead1/3, or ahead standard).
Allthough the good thing is, that selecting depth in small increments works well...nice, if you want to keep the schnorkel from closing-off in higher seas.

I don't know how much attention the XXI got from the GWX-devs - allthough I know they spend some time on it - but I realize it came in a very rough state upon release of SH3.
A shame, imo...it's a great boat to play "what if" scenario's towards the end of the war.
