Confessions Of A U.S. Navy Submarine Officer

Quote:
We have all seen Hunt For The Red October, Crimson Tide and other submarine films, but what is life really like aboard the world’s most advanced and silent submarines? One of our go-to submariners, who told us the story of an epic maritime beer run, takes us into this shadowy world, one with a language all its own, and gives us an inside look at life below the waves.

I thought SSN's were named for cities and SSBN's were named for states? Here they go confusing things even more.

They are also named for persons, from Adm. Hyman Rickover, to Lewis and Clark and Will Rogers [ all decommed ] to Senator John Warner and Pres. Jimmy Carter [ both still at sea ].

Confessions Of A U.S. Navy Submarine Officer

I don't like this man ... he cries and complains about everything. Lt Rogoway is not your gung ho everyday submarine sailor. I bet he only made one patrol and probably didn't even qualify due to this quote:
Quote:
My first captain hated me and I thought he was a ****ing ******* so I spent a lot of time on the midnight to 0600 watch. That meant I was generally asleep or busy during lunch and dinner. When you eat powdered eggs or leftovers for every meal something resembling real food becomes a dream.

After the meal you go on watch. That means you might not get to the bathroom for six hours so you better have some good bladder control.
His use of cuss words sounds more like an enlisted man and I would never trust him as the OOD that's for sure.

Before the Los Angeles Class they were named for fish, with that class SSNs were named for cities. When the Virginia's came out they picked up the state names. As for SSBNs, they were named for people and then picked up states with the Ohios.

So I'm gonna take it you never served on a submarine? Some Captains are indeed *******s. We made it a point on my boat to break the Mormon officer we got. He started drinking and swearing like the rest of us and was a fine officer regardless of his vocabulary. I really don't care if an officer swears, or anyone for that matter. All I care about is can I depend on him when the **** hits the fan.

Not absolutely convinced this guy was an officer, but I suppose he could have been. His thoughts about life aboard and ashore, to me, seem more the enlisted bent than an officer.

None of the officers I served with used the vernacular he uses, though it is entirely possible this generation's officers may think/write the way he does. I separated in '91.

The accommodations he describes are those of the enlisted man. No officer had only the bed pan for storage. Each also had a locker and desk in a two-man stateroom. This was LA class.

That being said, unless he is a well studied imposter, he was obviously a nuke and dead on about Down Periscope and AIP.
