Self sealing fuel tanks made the plane heavier, so Japanese constructors decided to not mount them on most planes. The agility of Mitsubishi Zero came with a price for their pilots. For the other hand i.e. the Grumman company made their planes more resistant and they could withstand more damage and offered better protection for pilots.
