Default Steam or Non-Steam?

Hello fellow skippers,

I've been playing SH5 for a year now, using all sorts of fantastic mods. I've read that some of the more "beneficial" mods require the modification of the .exe file itself though, something not possible with the Steam version. The problem is that I bought my copy on Steam.

Now, I'd like to ask you one simple question: do you think that the modifications and improvement that come with the modifiable exe file warrant the purchase of a boxed copy?

I might be willing to spend those money if it is really a game-changer.

And I apologize in case this topic is a tired one.

Thank you

Highly recommended changing to a dvd.

You can select the German Language version through the custom install.

YES! BUY IT!

First, TDW's patcher is (pardon the expression) a complete game-changer. Currently at v162, most versions either add some new capability or fix a hard-coded bug. So you can see that the patcher offers a huge number of changes. As they say "Don't leave Kiel without if!"

Second, you can get a publisher"s version of the game, either download or DVD, from many places online for just $10. That's the cost of two extra large double mocha caramel lattes from your favorite caffeine dealer. At that price, it's hardly a question.

Ok, you convinced me.

I found a gold version on Gamersgate and on ubi.shop itself. I would prefer the latter, as I already have an account. Would it be ok?

Anything that isn't the Steam version should be fine. All are the same, AFAIK.

It's done, I bought a DVD version on amazon.co.uk. Thanks for the advice.

Now I can't wait!

I have a doubt though: is it possible to play without the DVD or does it have to stay in the drive at all time?

BigWalleye is right. Getting the game anywhere except Steam should work out. I got my copy from Amazon Digital. Steam's problem is that it is not mod friendly. There are plenty of threads regarding SH 3-5 and the problems of modding with Steam copies. My personal gripe with Steam is that its stability is "epileptic" and is a bit of a memory hog. I know the Sonalysts simulations do not like Steam at all. Save yourself the grief and get it elsewhere.

I have +500 games on steam and I have never had any problems. To be honest having a game up-to-date automatically is a big plus for me.

I also almost always mod my games and except for Silent Hunter 5 I've never had any problems. Yeah, sometimes it happens that a steam game requires a different procedure to mod but only in case of Silent Hunter 5 steam has shown me the middle finger.

I suppose it's because the vanilla SH5 is in the absolutely worst conditions.
