Beautiful pic, nice to see them together. But did they forget the lesson we learned on Dec 7, 1941.

Looks like two LHD's in the background as well.... and those are no lightweighters on tonnage. Would make Scapa Flow into a historical slideshow if a Uboat turned up!!!!

All we've got in Sydney is one destroyer, one submarine, and several frigates.

Although my dad once visited a Russkie sub there.

Good question but I don't believe so because there are some key differences between then and now:

That is not some far flung territorial base, it is our front yard.
We're a lot better at detecting approaching enemy fleets than we were in 1941.
We're a lot better at killing them once they are detected.
None of our enemies possesses half the navy the IJN could field at the start of the war.
The carriers are in fact much better placed to protect against torpedo attack than they were on battleship row.

The most serious threat to them in that location would be a cruise missile or a MIRV aimed at the base.Neither of which is very likely the MIRV could only result from a Russian ICBM attack and the cruise missile would have to be submarine launched.

Well thinking about it a surprise submarine launched cruise missile attack is relatively feasible.Of course doing so would be serious act of war and incur a reaction that most nations could not sustain.

Probably parked 'em that way so they can say "look what we have to do because of sequestration".

Ah they wont get rid of them they will just cut down the crew size and say to the people that get cut "thank you for your service to the US Navy we know that many of you have dedicated 10 or and some of you nearly 20 years of your life to the Navy but you are not eligible for retirement pensions now have a nice day and life and enjoy your 90 day temp card."

A directive from the Obama Administration . For routine inspections. That's why they're parked in there together.
That was the original story. Fabricated, apparently.
Here, allegedly is the real story:
