Default sank neautral.

off the coast of Gibraltar and came across a small convoy. got into position and fired. (1940 November) I miss read the flag dates and sank a neutral French.
its been months since I sailed last. just got carried away, I'm a bit rusty and was too hasty to grab - didn't double check and think for a moment. damn. 11.000 tones too. I'm buggered.

My sympathies.

It's at times like that that you really wouldn't mind if the torpedo had malfunctioned. Imagine the feeling of relief at looking at the flag after the torp had bounced-off?

You'll have to sink a bit of 'extra' tonnage to make up for the faux-pas...

There are several threads which explore the historical cases of sinking neutrals. For example: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=192729 and http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=211621.

It seems there is no "right" answer. It is easy to change the Basic.cfg file to may neutral sinkings to yield no (or even positive) renown points. Whether you want to score negative points as an incentive to be careful with your target ID, or score zero and not be penalized for an honest mistake, is up to you. Historically, there was apparently little consequence. But lying off New York sinking American-flag ships in 1940 would not have been good for a Kaleun's career (or his health).

Should have gone to Specsavers

Relax, Doenitz has found you more suitable employment... You've got to row for 11,000 km to atone for the error - one km for each tonne.

Sorry, I had to do this to brush-up on my uploading skills.

thank you all SO MUCH for your comforting words of support. I may adjust the file to allow for zero points when sinking a neutral...it was a genuine mistake, albeit a stupid one. we surfaced at distance and watched her go down, and MAAAN did she burn brightly at night!!

I doubt changing the basic.cfg file in mid-patrol would cause a problem, but I doubt it would erase any penalty you've already been assessed, which I think is already written into your saved game files. Might as well wait till you are back in port!

Good luck and good hunting!

Always save game before shooting. I do and it stops this sort of thing happening.

The myth of CTD/bugs while saving underwater or within 50km of anything interesting is just that...a myth. It's only happened to me once or twice in several thousand hours of game time and both times it was no more than a petty inconvenience and recoverable. YMMV.

Yes, for those who don't play DID.

So do I, when I feel like it...

Otherwise, why mention an adverse result?

DiD is always an option but it doesn't preclude the alternative.

I did a patrol in 39 where I cruised up the English coastline near scapa flow. Encountered a lone cargo ship at night and could only just make out the flag was red. Fired if an eel and hit forward of the boiler. As I was coming in closer to finish it off I realised it was the German Flag.

I high-tailed it out of threre and was lucky the ship didn't sink heh

While you're at it change the 'Friendly' tally from -10 to -1. There were some mistaken sinkings of friendly ships, and in every single case the kaleun was let off. Usually the merchant was in the wrong place or was disguised as an Allied ship.

cheers Steve.

the issue has resolved itself. there was a corrupt 'save game.' on reloading it CTD'd. I had to go back to the previous save. so no more minus renown - got off lightly there I think!
I will change the cfg files as advised. I think it makes the game more immersive or realistic - after all, Donitz didn't deduct 'experience' or 'skill' upon finding out his Captains had sunk a friendly by accident. thanks all

(...just not sure as to whether or not its permissible to change those cfg files mid patrol?)
