Default Crush Depth Needle

I recall in the past seeing a needle on the depth gague that went across the crush depth line for each class. Was this stock, was it a mod and will it ever be in FOTRSU? I have noticed no matter what class I use there is no needle there to show crush depth.

Well, on the real boats there was no red line. Some individual boats had lines, but each was different. Mostly, it was assumed that test depth, a real number, was generous and left lots of room to "experiment" with your life.....er.....and the lives of 70-odd shipmates. No captain knew what depth would kill him.

100_FalloftheRisingSun_Ultimate_v0.80_RC2_PublicBe ta_EN is now up in the Subsim downloads area. The engine sounds issue files, which, by the way, bore the date of March 2008 on its data files, are fixed.

You can download and install the update without starting a new career if you have been playing v0.80 already.

I was testing .8 out today and noticed that some merchants were cruising around with water over their main decks. I also had an issue where the event viewer popped up as normal to see the fish hit a ship but then I could never leave it. It was stuck on that scene. Had to leave the game and start over.

I did notice a huge decrease in the number of planes traveling to my patrol area but in one instance I was bombed and even though I made repairs and was ok the HISSING sound of leaks never went away.

I'm uninstalling everything again then trying again ... could be a fluke. I'll use the latest version instead of .8 RC1

ROBBIN- is there a file with a list of test depth for each class? What is going to kill me in one class won't in another but I have no way of knowing.

as robbin has indicated, no captain knew what depth would kill him.
during the war, as the captain drove his boat, he and the crew would take the boat as deep as they needed to go to evade the enemy. there was a manufacturer's suggested crush depth which was actually tested by the crew during their test period with the boat. as the crew experienced battle with the enemy and discovered a new, deeper depth that the boat could survive, they painted a line on the depth gauge to indicate the deepest they had dived and survived.
in the game we are playing, more than likely the reason we do not see a line indicating the crush depth is that the line is determined by a value in a CFG file and the value is probably greater than the maximum displayable value of the gauge.

the answer to your question is, Yes, the test/crush depth is different for each boat. the value is stored in the boat.SIM file. the maximum-indicated-depth for the depth gauge is set in the boat.CFG file. so, as you can see, you can have two different values.
so, if you want to have a setup like the WWII sub movies, set the value in the CFG to some value that will appear on your depth gauge (say 400). then set the value in the SIM file to something deeper.
btw, the value are in meters.

It happens in the Balao class boat right at 550 feet. It actually starts before that at about 520 feet but it is barely discernible. If you go to the Hydrophone station and turn the volume way up, you'll hear the beat in the background. When you dive to 549 to 550 feet, the "drum beat" suddenly pops out much louder. I made it to 590 feet before taking damage in the Balao.

I have found that the "drum beat" exactly coincides with the animation of the damage control man in the control room near the diving station, tightening the wrench, and after it starts repeating, I can discern a noise that sounds somewhat like a nut being tightened down screech-like metal against metal.

This time when I changed stations, the sound either went away, stayed the same, or reduced in volume significantly. It is definitely a looping sound effect and somehow attached to the damage control animation. It goes away completely after a save game, restart, and reload, but then if you are too deep, starts up again.

How does one edit the SIM file?

Silent3Ditor

There is "Crush" depth, and there is "Crash" depth. One is for your boats destruction, the other is for how deep your boat goes when you "Crash Dive"... I think... don't have my notes in front of me... Just be aware that there are similar terms in those files...

... and KaleunMarco ~WINS~ by a post length!...

He and his crew conducted several test dives to find and fix any leakage problems encountered with the assistance of the shipyards.

BTW, "Clear the Bridge" is a great read and a very good reference book for us sub-simmers.
