I don't think anything, other than a lot of the "SubHunter" groups have been taken out of FotRS Ultimate - yet. When things come out, they will be available as an [boomingVoice]"Authorized Fall of the Rising Sun Ultimate Mod"[/boomingVoice]... ahem... sorry, running joke there... but they will be put into a mod for those that want them. Likewise with the SubHunters. There are several mods planned, from the original SubHunters that shorten your career, to MAD Hatters that will increase in frequency and efficiency as the war progresses, even to an ATO-style ASW that will include CVE with the SubHunters. Don't forget, there's side-launchers and hedge-hog style can throwers in this thing too... Go and be very careful - and quiet...

Wow - what a days work!

Java Sea - Feb 1942
Had been yo-yoing up and down all day to avoid an absolute shedload of air contacts, at about 6 in the evening I get a boatload of sound contacts on the hydrophone

I just got me a task force, and they are heading my way

I can see at least two escort carriers , two heavy cruisers and two light cruisers - plus the usual gaggle of destroyers

I am in about 90 feet of water, and the weather is perfectly calm - honestly the sea looks like a mirror

I hate doing attacks on escorted targets in shallow water, especially when the sea is this calm
But I cannot pass up this opportunity

Determine they are going at about 16 knots directly north

Looks like one of the carriers will go past my bow at about 3000 yards - I am happy about this
The only way I will survive this is with a long range shot

Just as I am getting ready to fire I take a quick scope check and see that the whole task force has tacked away from me

Dammit

After another minute or so I can see it looks as if they are now heading North West, away from me

It's a Hail Mary shot then
I guess that their speed after tacking will still be 16 knots
My shot on the escort carriers is now borked, but I still have an outside chance of hitting a heavy cruiser

Fire a longitudinal spread at the first CA
One torpedo about half a ship length ahead, fore turrets, aft turrets and the last half a ship length behind

As soon as the fish are off I head south and attempt to clear datum

Use the external camera to track the fish
(In a proper career save I do not use the external cam for things like this - but hey - I am playtesting this morning)

From this screenie it is not looking too bad

However - all 4 shots miss astern

Nevermind - it always was a long shot
Let's just try and get the boat away safely

Then to my utter surprise about 3 minutes later I hear two very loud explosions

I can only guess that there was another column of IJN ships farther away that I managed to get a lucky strike on

Looks like it was a shot of about 5300 yards

Man I have never been that lucky before

About 30 minutes later I can still see the masts poking above the surface as the sun sets
Seems heavy cruisers do not sink that well in 90 feet of water

And as a bonus - the shots were from so far away that the IJN destroyers really had no clue where to look
I heard some desultory depth charging for an hour or so - but none of it anywhere near the USS Pike

I am pretty pleased with myself
In all the years I have been playing SH4 I have probably only seen a dozen or so Task forces, and 9 times out of 10 have not been in a position to intercept.
That is probably only the third heavy cruiser I have managed to sink (in nearly 10 years!!)
Even if this sinking was a mostly down to luck - I do not care

The USS Pike is shaping up to be a lucky boat

This build is shaping up to be awesome - great work everyone

Now I have to go back and land my agent on the coast of Malaya - wish me luck

Task Forces!, so that's one is it, I was wondering what the hell one of those looked like and now I know.

When I drop on one of them and one of those sub hunter groups as well I've promised the lads a beer each for every one that we sink, and the Admirals paying for it.

@propbeanie, thanks for the links to the 2 files I wanted, its much appreciated.

June 42 heading from Midway to the Marshall Islands. About 500 miles out from Midway on the surface I receive a sonar contact followed by a radar contact about a minute later of a vessel heading my way. I go to the sonar station but cant pick it up..i was never able to pick it up at this station during my entire contact with it surfaced or submerged. I then went to periscope depth thinking its a friendly this close but it would be good practice to set up for. It was night and calm. Once the ship came into view I noticed that the reflection of the ship on the water was brighter than what I was used to seeing. It was a confirmed friendly heading to Midway I gather. I then surfaced and saw the ship about 2k away. I looked back a few minutes later and it was gone. It was a slow mover and shouldn't have gone that fast. I could not pick it up on radar or sonar. I then when to TC to get to the islands and I picked it up again on radar at that point.

Also while pulling out of midway on the surface from the bridge I noticed that the water on the outer edge of my field of vision appeared to have brighter sections than the rest of the water. I think I read that having been reported earlier.

Ah - great shot my Az

I missed what I was aiming for and hit something else entirely by mistake.

Still - I am told that good skipper's
are not only skillful, they are also lucky.

So I will take that - thanks very much

@Sniper450,
Sensors are bloody rubbish in this sim, but, RR has got some new sensor files for us that'll be available in the next version.
There are only 2 sensor men in one of the conning tower shifts of this new Balao sub I've been given, how would I go about getting a 3rd man in there to match up with the other 2.?

I've been playing around with the new sensors and they work very well, almost as good as the sensors in TMO.

Thanks for that Sniper. Looking into that area of the Campaign now. As for the graphics, there are some anomalies that I've found also, and there were issues off and on in the original FotRS. The card that you have, and the way you have it set up seems to matter. There's a post somewhere buried deep in this thread, or in the original FotRS thread about the difference between ATI and nVidia cards. Someone else is going to have to dredge that up...

In the meantime, as a heads-up for everyone, there is a chance for "friendly fire", and I have been sunk by a US airplane before. They showed such skill, hitting me in the conn as we were zigging, apparently when we should have been zagging... Also, slightly amusing, is the IJN doing it. I had crash dived for airplanes, and they called the local authorities apparently, who dispatched a DD my way, and this is what happened:

Now, that's about five and a half minutes of really bad video, mostly because of my smallest test bed's "stats" are like below Single A ball, no chance for the "biggies" with a dual-core and AGP video from like 1998... wait, when did this game come out, anyway?... Oh yeah, about 10 years later... So you'll only see about 12-15fps on "Low" setting, what with the 1/2 frame vid cap going on also, but it's still entertaining nonetheless... Be governed by what you see from max-peck and cdrsubron7 as to the quality of the game's graphics, not mine.

Anybody notice how CapnScurvy's optics just shine in these screeshots? The periscope shots are magnificent!

Aye aye, skipper; that they do, that they do... There's a little NCplane Test vid over there on toobyu with that vid from above, and you can see the NC on the horizon at over 15k. I forgot to notate what the range was when we saw the CL Katori, but it was something like 14.5k. Cool beans. Only problem though, is that the airplanes can see your boat from further away also. Those planes that attack in the video above were out at like 9200 when we picked them up on radar, and they changed direction bee-lined to my boat just shortly after that...
